Can I freehand? Nope. Did I watch the video anyway? Yep. I can’t even paint Space Marine eyes correctly😂there’s no hope
Yes! More cookies for Lucas! I literally don’t even paint anything and this is one of my favorite channels on you tube! Thanks for getting me through my hard thirty minutes of cardio without noticing!
Try it mate, painting is awesome!
What kind of cardio?
Same for me. Well, without the cardio.😂
Yesterday, I was proud to be able to paint parallel lines over a curved surface while respecting shadows and blends. It's not much, but it looked nice.
Then Lucas comes along and earns his cookie with yet another grand masterpiece
As someone who will free hand two banners this video is much appreciated. Thank you.
Some of those freehands, like the Knight's banner, are absolutely bonkers.
Step 1 : objects far away are small. Step 2: objects close by are big . Step 3 : a perfect replica of a masterpiece 😁😁😁👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
It's very interesting to see, how very different techniques can be. I love doing freehands, but i always start with rough shapes and slowly define them into what ever i want. And Lukas works almost completely the opposite way. Really fascinating to watch someone else do freehands in a completely different way to oneself.
As I studied illustration for 3 years and worked as a concept artist in the games industry for over 10 years, I know this video is not meant for a person like me, but you guys did a perfect job opening people up for this topic and you gave the right tools everyone needs to overcome the fear of trying freehands themselves.
Great perfect video!
The fastest I've ever seen one of your videos show up (26 seconds after upload).
With drawing your guides, highly recommend a soft and more rounded lead. In America, B is the soft range, 2B, 3B etc being softer lead. They draw a darker line with less pressure. So you're not having risk damaging anything to get the line and it also means it'll erase easier.
“atmospheric perspective” is the term 👍. Awesome vid!
Thanks for the knowledge. I've watched pretty much every freehand tutorial, and this one is top tier for its depth and breadth. Lukas deserves all the cookies.
The best freehand I have ever seen bar none
Check out Karol Rudyks art, it is truly amazing.
The first freehand you showed in your intro was really good, because it was hard to tell what was actually freehanded.
Awesome, I’ve been after a guide on exactly this! Thanks so much!
Another excellent video guys! Lucas provides some easy to follow instructions with great examples. Mustn’t forget the humorous interaction about Emil’s early freehand efforts, towards the end of the video. 😂😂😂
Thanks so much for leaving the credits to Genzoman!!! He is a chilean artist!
Got to see this live last weekend! Thank you for being awesome.
woooooooooooo amazing squiddy!!!
Muuuuuuuch higher quality video than usual. Kudos to you guys
That's sick!! Well done!
Awesome video as always!
Absolutely Amazing
Outstanding 👊
Sick! Great Freehand!
Great video as always guys, thanks! I wanted to contribute with a tip which makes freehands easy which is very beginner friendly that you did not mention in the video. Use transfer/trace paper or just put a graphite on the back of the motive that you want to transfer, and then transfer it to the banner by tracing with a pencil on the other side. It works superwell! you need to print the motive in the size that you want, after doing that, just put graphite on the back side of it, just rub it all over, then transfer it to a grey/white banner.
Loving this series
All I have to do to be humbled about my painting skills is look up a single painting tutorial on TH-cam.
Side note fan flipping tastic job Lucas! The art you create is beyond any description.
Now that was an amazing tutorial. Very inspirational- now need to get practicing
Great video!!!!!!! Great to see Lucas doing all that freehand, it came out looking real nice
Just wow!
Hawt dayummm that Emperor freehand is amazing!
Lucas Amazing work and great explanation
That is amazing, I cant wait to try my first shoulderpad.
Lucas you are brilliant. So so good.
I love all Squidmar Miniature videos👏👍🤙
Great video guys. I suck at freehand, but this video makes me want to keep trying.
Can you guys do a video tutorial on eyes next? They are so tiny, it’s a struggle
We've got one
@@SquidmarMiniatures really? I’ll have to check that out. The eyes I’m doing at the moment are a bit smaller than GW models. I’m sure your vid will help.
damn... wow.. Nice job Lucas!
Lucas is doing a great bobblehead impression in this one :D
That is amazing - i think your just showing off now 😁
You should do a video in how you overcome painting obstacles when you are left handed.
The Emps on the banner is impressive.
You deserve tones or cookies lukas, amazing job and amazing video guys 👏👏👏
I left some cookies in Lukas’ message requests inbox ;) great video as ever. Think I’ll go paint some diamond patterns on my harlequin now. I’ve put this off for 3 months now xD
Woo! I'm excited for this! Maybe I can freehand a Little Smiley face on my Emperor Children. Haha
I have never used grids in my life lol. I have always just drawn it as is and learnt that way. Even when I was a beginner many, may years ago. I have been drawing my entire life though at this point and I am 26. New to painting overall though
Lukas, you’re awesome
Perhaps it would be a good idea to put stamps in the video for each of the chapters. Thanks for the great content!
26:55 50 years!? not only is he the GOAT, but he’s also got amazing skin for his age
Two guys are boasting with their new tattoos! :D
But in serious, thank you for this video! It's really cool and useful for everyone! Cheers!
Superbly explained, thank you Lucas !! ~~ I have a question about the the wet palette, what's better, tap water or Deionized water ?
An awesome video with some really great tips. Now if only you could teach my hands not to shake 😅
what the fook, Lukas is like Michael Angelo or something, I'm amazed ;O
+1 for a Cookie Monster/Mona Lisa freehand on a warhammer mini somehow somewhere!!
To me feels very strange the way that Lukas has of painting the main figure: Instead of doing the simpler shapes all at the same time, and then add increasing level of detail to all of it until everything is completely done he focuses in specific parts until they are fully completed, and then move to the next part.
I have heard painters and illustrators argue against that kind of approach, what is your opinion on it?
The general shading bit is gold!
Thanks a lot :)
The biggest problem with working that way is keeping everything proportional and in perspective.
Lukas is a beast!
You can see he blocked out some major parts in dark brown first and then worked on each part. I doubt there is a "right" answer here, it's up to the individual and their results.
@@cbjewelz yes, I saw it. But still I expected the sketch to progress at the same pace in every part of it.
I saw that the approach of Lukas is similar to what many miniature paintings do with their minis: they focus in an area or color and keep working on it until it is done before moving on to other areas. I wonder if that is the reason why he approaches the sketch in a similar way
The headline at 10:10 says "we are to begin" ;)
I wish I had a quarter of your talent
Super easy, berely an inconvenience ... F*ck man, what a great work!
I wonder how's the mordheim board is going
Lucas is the man

When your Boss enters the room
Where did you guys got that Vallejo paint stands?
dig it
The one thing I really wanna know is if it's actually allowed in the Imperium to show a picture of the Emperor himself or put him on a banner.
Have you painted the mirrored background of the banner?
Great video guys. Proper painting stuff. Has something got mistranslated in English here? “Light pollution” is unwanted artificial light (e.g. especially at night so you can’t see the stars for example). The reduced contrast described here of far away objects is called “atmospheric perspective” and is caused by the atmosphere. Is this what you meant?
Yeah not everyone can do this, your a legit artist
Wish I had this last week when I was attempting to freehand a cool insignia for one of my minis, ended up looking more like a badger turd than anything else
Perfect time to try again
@@nukem8128 hell yeah, there’s a good chance of it actually looking decent now after watching this!
Hey guys! Just wanna mention that its called "atmospheric perspective", not light pollution when talking about art :)
That outro! LOL
Old mate Leonardo put 19 layers of glaze on some sections of the Mona Lisa.
Amazing video, BUT that right foot is kinda weird. The foot anatomically could not be farther in the foreground than the knee. Am I missing something? :-)

I came to better my freehanding, not be attacked from a lack-of-cookie rage!
👍
When are you gonna redo the rogue trader space Ork army videos😢
wonder how many hours Lucas spent on that banner.
Step 1, get good paints and a wet pallet, step 2, spend thousands of hours practicing and be an amazingly naturally talented artist. Easy.
Quality takes work
Why aren't you guys selling the beautiful Sanguinius as an STL? I would love to have that model with my Blood Angels 🤤🤤
We don't own any of the parts used in the kit, so unfortunately we're not allowed
Tbh. When it comes to freehanding. Especially when it comes to armored vehicles, personal armor and the like. Keep in mind that its the joe that drives that tank that painted it. Which means it can be butt ugly. My first freehands were just numbers and the names for tanks. nearly every tank has a name in small letters on it. Especially if you are shit at drawing like me it will take some practice and time. Lots of time.
Ima gonna say it again. Crooked handpainted numbers on a tank. Makes it come alive. Imo more so than the current clownpainting standards.
Doing these chapters, some timestamps would be highly appreciated 😃

Oh these sweet mark rober tunes in the background. Put a glitter b*** in there and call it a day. 😂🎉
First lesson: Draw two sticks to form a cross.
Second leason: Paint the Emperor of mankind.
(Seriously thought, a very insightful video)
w mark rober music
Love you guys, but as a classic photographer - Depth of Field, not FOCUS (it's something completely different). I know, I'm a pain in the ass.
I'm always happy to see Daniel Radcliffe and Bradley Cooper working together.
Wait, where's the emperor's eye brose?
Very good worka?!!?
Ultimate Guide - Goes from a simple cross to a replica of Genzoman's Emperor.
I got two freehands and nothing to grip
Does Lucas fly fish? I feel like he fly fishes. If he does cool.
Cheaters tip: I use a mechanical pencil to do fine lines on armor lines. Fast easy nonmetallic effects.
Not knocking you guys at all, but this is very much 'now draw the rest of the horse' haha
Is this a Hobbit hole on your hand Lucas?
Your banner is beautiful. As a beginning freehander your banner doesn't help me at all it intimidates me from even trying. How about some much easier to chew chapter badges and numbers for the shoulder pads or even ork chex ? something less detailed would be easier to try. thank you for the entertaining content.
Yes do that but hardly worth them showing that. They do it all the time in other videos and those involve almost none of the nuances of free hand painting they talk about. Icons/badges are more about practicing control and precision than understanding perspective and light.
As an alcoholic, I'm really good at freehand lightning bolts. That's about it. Stay off the hooch kids!
The real travesty is 65 bucks for four small paint brushes x.x
I assume you don't want to touch the Warhammer controversy currently going on, but if you are, what is the take? 🤔
And if you can’t freehand, there’s always transfers 😅😅
what if i can't even draw? where does someone like me start?
