I would like to see the rest of Votan in this style. They fight on alien worlds so justifying wacky light sources and color casts is easier. And you got a whole box right there. 😃 Developing a batch paint technique for this style would make a great video
I agree, of course there are several armies this would look very good on. AOS Soulblight / Vampires / Skeletons would look awesome. You've already started with the Votann and I think seeing that whole box being unified with the character model would look awesome!
I'd like to see someone attempt to compress this style. You spent a lot of time carefully layering and blending, which felt appropriate for the model in question, but trying to pull it off across a whole army, how could you use the same general concepts of the style but to a tabletop standard in a quicker amount of time......
You absolutely killed this, it’s super inspirational. The colored shadow / mother color looks like a great way to do some crazy frazetta styled armies. Maybe some of the Warcry kits? Untamed beasts
Got a full Van Saar gang turning up today, so watching vids for inspiration, this has been the most exciting by far! Totally going to try this once they're assembled! Thanks Ninjon
I feel a little silly saying this, but thank you for vocalizing your formula thinning your paint. I've known for a long time that paint needed to be thinned, but I could never figure out what I was aiming for. Now I have the foundation start from. So thank you for not just glossing over the basics.
Yes, a full start collecting box like this would be ace. Most models would work worth with this method but I think something like Eldar with both lots of smooth surfaces on the bikes/vehicles but nobbly bits on the dudes, so there would be a lot of balance of textures. Or if it's possible, custodes. Their start collecting box is wicked with a plethora of different textures and this shadow/NMM sharp highlights would work really well and perhaps be quite quick/streamlined.
That tune that kicks in around 5:50 is fantastic! Oh man, this mini turned out great! That color in the shadows has a very... non-earth atmospheric lighting effect going on
I would definitely love to see this painting style on a Tyranid Start Collecting Box, a Nighthaunt Faction or a Seraphon. You could do a lot with a mixture of vibrant colors in all of those. Plus, there’s only one tyranid video on this channel (would love to see more as a tyranid player).
Marko and Aleksandra are awesome. I'm glad you made this video, they deserve the recognition, they are changing the game. Forget your black and white zenithal underpainting and start using some pure magenta!
You guys pretty much saved my life .I'm a recovering addict, and one of our biggest enemies is idle time and boredom. I've been free of drugs for 12 years. But I was def getting board with life , with covid , racial issues and the world in general , I was loosing faith and def getting bored .Then there were minis .and a group of awesome folks to help me with my time. I actually use it as a kinda meditation. Anyway to keep it short , wanna thank you Jon, Miniac , Goobertown, Midwinter Minis, and rest of you know who you are .Thanks for saving me for me and my family.Stay safe , stay well and always remberrrrr toooo slay the grey, H a Ha !
You know what…. I think you’re onto something here. I’ve been mini painting for 20 years and to be honest I can see some fantastic styles in just what you have shown us. Keep it up good sir!
This was my favorite video you’ve done to date. So many amazing ideas and taking the time to talk to the wet palette and detailing tips was awesome, including the “going to take the time to show me blending the mid-tone with highlight” on the knee pit, err.. knee pad. Killer stuff, Ninjon!!!
The reason the gold really works, is because that's actually what the paintstyle is that you use as an inspiration. They use cold shadows and warm highlights to create an extra kind of contrast. You've made an amazing miniature, keep up the great work! As for the army: yeah, do it! Just pick a faction with a warmer color on their armor. The new LoV box is already in your possession, so using them would be really cool I think.
I absolutely would love to see the rest of the starter box painted this way. Maybe with how long it takes either per model or overall to see how feasible it is in a timely manner to get an army done in this style. It is lovely and I love the contrast of these 3 colors.
Yes, more Armypainting!!! I am serious. I think Idoneth Deepkin would be perfect. Light effects in water both real and "fantastic" seem really interesting.
This is why I prefer Jon's painting videos, rather than just saying " edge highlight that bit" he breaks it down in simple steps. Great and entertaining stuff.
Just went back to watch this again for inspiration for my Death Guard army. Love the other-worldly purples and think they will pair great with sickly green. As always, THANKS FOR THE INSPIRATION!
I'd definitely like to see rest of the box painted in this style, I've often really liked craftworld studio's painting style, think I never really gave it a try to painting it as them. this came out really well (if I remember correctly, I think they take a quite few more steps just in the priming/shadow colours, before all the layering stuff starts, so if you manage to do in this style quickly, I'll definitely try start painting at least a model and maybe a squad.
Astonishing paint job. Love the look and am inspired to try something like this out. In terms of what I’d like to see, I think I’d like to see more experiments with different starting colors, more so than a whole army done this way. I’m sure it’d look super sweet, but I’d learn more from the other stuff. Awesome video and plug for craft world
This is a bit of an odd one, but I'd love to see you do something like this with Grey Knights. I feel like there are way to many "Slap on some Drakenhof Nightshade and call it a day" GKs and seeing a more dynamic, yet still efficient paint scheme would be pretty cool. Plus, if you could pull it off on (basic) Silver Boys, I feel like it could be translated to pretty much any faction in armour.
Wow absolutely gorgeous. Had an army of Chaos when I was 12 in 2000 and looking to get back into the hobby. Just having a tough time choosing a SM chapter because I don’t like the colour schemes. This video is exactly what I needed, I’m sure I will butcher it compared to this masterpiece but you have inspired me! Now just need to choose a chapter 🤔
I decided on the chapter I would like to join in real life, if given the honor. After you paint up your first squad, the color feels less and less important.
HOLY SHIT! This is it, the style I have been looking for! I'm not a fan of excessive edge highlights, but my details begin to run together. By having a contrasting shade color that you leave on all the details and on all the deep edges, the shapes are well defined and easy to read. I will definitely be trying this out for the next while...
This is a spectacular video. Obviously the result is outstanding, but more than that, this is probably the best example I can immediately think of of a minipainting youtuber breaking down some advanced concepts and techniques in a very accessible way, demonstrating techniques clearly and talking about why the effect is working. It's made me want to try something like this and given me some confidence that I could potentially get a good result.
Thank you for this video! I took the time to try it on a mini today :) Not my favorite result but I definitly learned a lot through the process! Thank you :)
Fair point on the wet palette. I often go back and try to keep painting with paint that’s out of whack. It makes a huge difference to just remix your paints.
Everyone would love to see the rest of Votan in this style! One of the most entretainign videos I've seen in a long time. Thanks for making my day better!
Incredible outcome on that. The miniature has a really harmonic composition going on making it really easy in the eyes. I like the way you painted the armor and the face. Draws the eye exactly where you want to. Outstanding paintjob
My Favorite Learning Technique: "Jon Style". Why ask questions when you can make mistakes instead. I like the new music selection in the video. That's a good looking space dwarf.
The impression I get from that color scheme is that they are fighting/exploring/salvaging in a Underdark type environment, where they need those types of colors to be camouflaged against things with exotic sensory organs.
With everyone else on TH-cam painting squats right now this is by far the absolute best color scheme I have seen. Please finish the box these are amazing!
This is a very cool method. What I'd like to see is the same model, but different color schemes. What about an orange-red-yellow? Green-blue-yellow? Bust out that color wheel and see what comes up.
Great video, lovely paint job, really well done. Would love seeing this style on the AoS chaos warriors start collecting box. Would be fantastic on the Karkadrac or whatever the lizard thing is called.
5:05 Yes. That's what I've been doing for years. Even with a properly set up wet palette and regularly mixing the pigments, the qualities of the paint change over time.
when i see you paint and view the finished product it makes me want to throw all my paint stuff in a mud puddle and stomp on it...your work if phenomenal . even in 100 years i could never get this good.
I use this kind of thing with my orks. Literally every model has a base coat of purple to start their green skin. Your paint job has turned out wonderful as always
Would love to see a whole army done!! Love the older videos when you paint mass units! Finish the voltan army or maybe the new lumineth release? Or Tau they would look good in this style!
This video answered the secret behind one of the best paint schemes I’d seen in person. Looking at your finished product it was obvious that he started with a deep crimson base and painted up from there. Great vid!
First time I watched Ninjon, I instantly fell in love with his videos. I knew there was some sort of connection we both shared outside of Warhammer 40k and painting miniatures, but could never put a finger on it. At 1:42 I finally realized what that was after seeing his preferred bubbly beverage behind his left shoulder.
I'm glad you're figuring out how quickly building values with layers instead of glazes. Next stage: doing a glaze after this point to get perfect blends quickly.
Hey Jon! Awesome video. I'd love to see you tackle some small scale mini's such as adeptus titanicus or aronautica imperialis. See how you handle weathering & such on that scale!
Pleaaaseee make a full army of these guys !!! I liked the blend of colors in the base but I feel like bright red would be awesome ! Great video and Thank You for doing what you do !
I don't think you nailed exactly what you were looking at but I still think that paint job looks amazing like a hybrid between their paint scheme and your normal style. Awesome job dude!
You did an impressive paint job, the result is fabulous. It's really, really beautiful! I love this style with all these shades of colors. Congratulations to you, and thank you for your videos. Thanks, From France!
That's a pretty cool take on a synthwave colour scheme. Almost looks like an aquarel painting. Or a 3d page from a comic book :) Thanks for another fun vid, Ninjon!
Cutting down to a small selection of colours is amazing. I paint with only the core Kimera set. Even if you don't want to discard all your other paints you can pick projects to use with a limited palette.
I would like to see the rest of Votan in this style. They fight on alien worlds so justifying wacky light sources and color casts is easier. And you got a whole box right there. 😃
Developing a batch paint technique for this style would make a great video
Seconded. Would love to see them all done in this scheme, they'll look sweet.
Exactly, just finish the box.
Agreed! This is such a cool scheme!
This.... absolutely this
I agree, of course there are several armies this would look very good on. AOS Soulblight / Vampires / Skeletons would look awesome. You've already started with the Votann and I think seeing that whole box being unified with the character model would look awesome!
definitely would like to see an army painted that way. it looks so damn good
👀
I'd definitely be interested in seeing this extended over a full army, maybe an army of squats?
I think that necrons would be another good option, specially for showcasing non-methallic metal with those awesome shadows.
@@hectorvizsla87 I like your thinking
Same leagues of votann all the way !
I'd like to see someone attempt to compress this style. You spent a lot of time carefully layering and blending, which felt appropriate for the model in question, but trying to pull it off across a whole army, how could you use the same general concepts of the style but to a tabletop standard in a quicker amount of time......
yeeeees I want to see the whole army like this!!
My mind is blown. My color theory class (from honestly thirty years ago) just came rushing back, and this has re-opened my eyes. Well done, Jon.
I love the final look, like the model has this inner glow. Awesome.
You absolutely killed this, it’s super inspirational. The colored shadow / mother color looks like a great way to do some crazy frazetta styled armies. Maybe some of the Warcry kits? Untamed beasts
I absolutely love craftworlds work, it’s so unique, and this is an AWESOME depiction of it. Great job!!
Got a full Van Saar gang turning up today, so watching vids for inspiration, this has been the most exciting by far! Totally going to try this once they're assembled! Thanks Ninjon
One of your best, so many people don't infuse colors to add depth and contrast and more importantly let those colors tell a story. Well done!
I feel a little silly saying this, but thank you for vocalizing your formula thinning your paint. I've known for a long time that paint needed to be thinned, but I could never figure out what I was aiming for. Now I have the foundation start from. So thank you for not just glossing over the basics.

Man, I think ‘Nids would look fantastic in this style with the vibrant colors and serious contrasts. Lizardmen too!
Nighthaunt is my DREAM, I want to see him do EXACTLY that!
This looks freaking amazing. Ever time I come to this channel I'm blown away.
Really cool!
I think an eldar army (or squad or whatever) would look amazing with this technique.
Or maybe a Slaanesh daemons army.
Marko and Aleksandra are awesome. I'm glad you made this video, they deserve the recognition, they are changing the game. Forget your black and white zenithal underpainting and start using some pure magenta!

You dropping in that little Stalecracker at the end had me choking on my coffee man. That was brilliant😂
I thought I was the only one that caught the Stale Kracker reference. That paint job is pure money dude
The "unrealistic" paint scheme allows you to take shortcuts like you did with the sword, and still have it look fantastic. Great job, mate.
This was a great high quality painting tip video, and the title is not even click-bait, it probably will impact how I paint. Thanks!
You know what…. I think you’re onto something here. I’ve been mini painting for 20 years and to be honest I can see some fantastic styles in just what you have shown us.
Keep it up good sir!
What a legend for putting the sponsor at the end
That is one awesome dwarf. And yes I would like to see the whole Votann set in this style
paint the army!
love your work, and thanks for always sharing
Cheers from Canada
Hot damn! Those "80's synth" colours are so good for the neo-Squats... Awesome job as always!

Best painting vids on youtube man, for real. Please keep it up.
Definitely interested in seeing this done to a whole start collecting box, maybe death guard or khorne
I’m still waiting to see you do an army based on this technique!! ITS SO LOVELY!
Yes, more Armypainting!!! I am serious.
I think Idoneth Deepkin would be perfect. Light effects in water both real and "fantastic" seem really interesting.

This has got to be one of your best videos, super inspirational. This style would look amazing on a demon army.
By far the coolest Space Dwarf I've seen yet. Please consider doing the rest of this box in this style.
Absolutely yes to a video on a whole box set painted like this, I vote Tyranids!
Just went back to watch this again for inspiration for my Death Guard army. Love the other-worldly purples and think they will pair great with sickly green. As always, THANKS FOR THE INSPIRATION!

More knee pits sir! Awesome painting. Always fun to see some painting being done instead of just the final result.
Thank you from Ukraine for supporting our children Ninjon, my own Kyiv Infinity arrived yesterday, joining my Squidmar airbrush.

this is the best painting channel for miniatures of them all.
!

I like the new music selection in the video.
That's a good looking space dwarf.
It would be great to see the rest of that Votan box done in this scheme. The light looks subterranean, so perfect for the space dwarves
The impression I get from that color scheme is that they are fighting/exploring/salvaging in a Underdark type environment, where they need those types of colors to be camouflaged against things with exotic sensory organs.
“Fuck around and find out” I would buy that shirt John! 😂
Deffinately paint the full box in this style. Omg it would look awsome.
Imagine a whole army of League of Votann all painted to this quality/style. Looks absolutely stunning!!

Oh yeah, do a whole army like this, totally! I would LOVE to see how that turns out!
This is totally what I would do for thousand sons, so cool. That’s what painting is about. Colours. Use them all.
Even with the new Space Dorfs being as hideous as they are, your paint job really did some magic with the mini. Great job.
