How To Remove Broken Exhaust Manifold Bolts [LS HEADS and More]

- We show you how to remove broken exhaust manifold bolts the easy way. Using a couple of our GM LS heads, we quickly find one of the heads with two broken exhaust manifold bolts. This is not uncommon on these heads and many others as well. Typically, these bolts also break below the surface which means it's impossible to just use vice grips. Using our welder, we quickly weld a nut onto the broken stud and easily remove it.

Any way that works is the right way. 🙌
Hi Tim, your an excellent tech, you always produce a quality video ty, very impressive demonstration as always,
You did a nice job sir, slow and steady. I see a lot of people making the mistake of using an impact on and just snapping the bolts right off.
Thank you very much and thanks for watching.
Yip. I used an impact. Why I’m here.
what is the setting on the wire feed welder. Thanks.
When I have to do this I always put antiseize on the new bolts!
Absolutely correct! 💯
This might be a stupid question but of the stud is broken 3/8 in can i still weld without worrying about threads? If the build up from the weld touches the thread does it mess it up?
That's great, all I need now is a welder for mine 😢
There's no wrong way to do it. If you got it out, it's the right way.
Well if this isn’t just 2 weeks too late. Just dropped $11k refreshing a Cadillac front to back, including this
EXCELLENT idea, anyone can clearly see how easy it is to do. Much thanks!!
I don't understand why this procedure does not end up welding the bolt to the head itself
I normally get them like this but today nope drilling now
Worked perfectly. Rocking the nut after the weld is key. Thank you
Hi Tim, I am about to do this on my vortec heads. What are your welder settings?
I run it pretty hot when I'm doing this. I want to make sure I'm melting/welding the stud that is inside. Probably 125 Amps.
Pretty cool! Thanks!
Nice video but I wouldn't weld with nitrile gloves on 😅
what setting did you have your welder?
Damn get to the point
😂get clearance hole size tap hole turn down on leith.drill tap hole size harden put manifold back on incert into hole thatl has broken bolt now you have a drill jig manafold drill with hand drill clean out with tap😊
That was an excellent educational video, you are, my friend, a true professional in your field! Keep up the good work and I hope it goes as easy as you made it look!! Not likely tho......lol!!!
To all those that complained; I tried to complain at the broken studs and not a single one came out.
A person can buy an economical welder to have to perform this repair, a cheap one is all you need. Also, very good to have covered holes over. You can see welding BBs on the tape where it may have found its way into engine if doing engine repair in the vehicle. Overall great video.
Weld the washer to the tack weld on the broken stud before welding the nut on. Gives you a better bite on the stud
Sometimes you don't have choice, someone else already broke the bolts. But when your wanting to remove a exhaust manifold never take a wrench to it. Cut the heads off the bolts remove manifold and then start working the left over bolt out. heat, quench, wiggle over and over until they come free. I have never seen anyone able to wrench the bolts out without breaking at least one bolt.
Good video I started heating the remaining bolt heads to red hot then remove carefully like you did 90 ish% the bolt comes out without breaking used to cut them off then deal with the stud. The dip stick tube is a nother problem to remove heating the block around the tube base then carefully twist it back and forth you may have to heat it a couple of times to remove .I replaced the dipstick tube when I do the job hopefully this helps someone else doing this job 😊
Magnificent....I am having a problem with a 3.7 hummer.....going at it tomorrow again....thanks for the simple video.
Glad it helped. Thanks for watching.
Good job! What happened to the Chevy truck rebuild?
I knew you were going to Ace that. Everyone has taken the shortcut before.
What gauge wire and mig or flux?
I just use wire from harbor freight
That has to be so f*#$ing satisfying
It really is. Thanks for watching.
I've seen guys remove the welded nut while still hot to make removal even easier.
PB blast as soon as its loose. Not before welding. Then ease it out with oil😊
Dont let it cool so long and spray it with Croil
What about stock lt1 steel heads
Great!
Hells yeah TJ!!! LET'S GO!!🏁
Nice job brother. Got some I gotta remove tomorrow. God bless you.
Right on, let us know how it goes. You may want to check out this video too...

May be a dumb question, but I have a stick welder. Will it work?
Yes
@@markwohlgemuth2775 thanks, I have a Chevy Express that I'll be doing lifters on and I noticed a broke stud.
Tried this on my Ram 1500,only got one out of four out so far.
I’m not getting any play in loosening them, they’re really stuck.Heat and penetrant didn’t help.
I’ll keep at it
Spray them a few times with PB let it sit overnight then weld the nuts on the next day
I used an impact and snapped it off twice on my 2008 ford escape. I also blasted it all at once instead of welding incrementally.
Great video im going to try it this way. Luckily i have a quarter inch knub sticking out to work with. Im using my new harbor freight unlimited 200 mig welder on 110.
That should work great, with the nub. Let us know how it goes.
Man I was ripped of just for these? 😢
Plastic gloves 😮
