3:13 Hey Thomas, 🙋♂️ It is not right "to impose a fine" this time🙂... It is not fake. The exhaust is visible. I know they have started this trend of fake exhaust fashion, but in this very case that one is the final trim which is ok to be that way, though. Honestly. If the exhaust would have been invisible or rather oriented to the ground, then Autogefühl Police should 🚔 them.
I have to agree on the second row captain seats are weird positions, i am small guy when i test drive the 2020 GlS and seat back there is very sunk down and feel uncomfortable
9:50 Look from here. The reason for the delay, in this case, was because the voice assistant was still listening to you after your input command. Notice how the graphic above "How may I help you?" is kind of pulsating and reacting to your voice as you are talking, and how the upper left corner of the screen is highlighting as you are talking. That highlight would be a different colour depending on the ambient lighting. Pretty cool. But yes, the web connection can also cause a delay. Don't speak too fast, or else it would not understand or it will pick up more than you intend. Wait for the "do-do" sound that indicates the system has registered what you said and acting accordingly. Remember, this is not the new S-Class sedan, lol. Also, using a microphone makes it a little hard for the voice assistant to pick up your voice. Depends on the microphone, of course. Also, the degree of the Curve Mode can be adjusted. The GLS you are driving may be in its tamest setting, that may be why you do not feel its aggression as you did with the GLE, which probably had the setting to be more apparent. Just check that. Or maybe the aggression of Curve Mode for both cars are different even on the same degree of curve. I don't remember.
Interesting comparison with S class. Older style interior without the oversized screens of the new S much more cohesive. Thanks for the clear explanation of the inferior 2nd row comfort, and the tight packaging in the 3rd seat.
The last proper GLS they made was the 2019 one... Its huge and bold.... the subsequent ones look meek for their size. And their smaller engines combined with hybrid functionality (not yet perfected) erodes the purpose for which most buyers want a big powerful German SUV.
Hi Thomas. You mentioned in your review in the US that the door closing sound could have been better and here you say very solid - do you think there is a difference between the GLS model in US and EU? Kr Thomas from Denmark
I totally agree with you on the 2nd row seating. I have a GLS580. I love just about everything about it but two major complaints: no wireless CarPlay? WTH? what's the point of wireless charging if I have to connect the cable anyway??? and the recline angle of the 2nd row seats. it's just not enough to be comfortable.
👍 For this review. I am not a fan of MB but comparing with the S Class model, the new one, I do like the exterior and the interior design of the GLS. And that engine sound and power... I know, soon, it will be the last song of a swan, before EVs take the lead. It is a big car and I don't need such car, but as a comment, to me is a car that looks nicer than BMW X7. Personal opinion Keep it up with the good work!
Yay. Great to see the GLS on the German Autobahn. It is the first time I am seeing it there. Good job there, Thomas. What a beast. The GLS 580 or just the GLS 450? Yeah, a great question. I already answered it. I had the same question months ago. I have already compared this car to the new S-Class, and I went very in-depth a couple times as to why I would take the new S-Class over this GLS, but also the drawbacks of the new S-Class that the GLS does not have. Just my opinion, of course. Obviously, l won't be cross-shopping both of these cars. It is either one or the other. Their main philosophies are different, but do have a similar goal...as far as human-centred comfort. Note: some of my thoughts of the new S-Class are still in pencil, because I have not driven it. But most of those pencil thoughts are having to do with the ergonomics and comfort in motion. Now we are just talking about the engines of the GLS. Of course, this is based on my lifestyle and driving profile. For me, I feel as though the GLS 580 engine is too powerful, relatively speaking. Even though I think it is more comfortable, in terms of power use, than the GLS 450 and the way it builds power is so nice, I would rather get the GLS 450. The GLS 450 has such a nice balance to it, and I love it. Same deal with the W222 S-Class. The S500 was so balanced. With the GLE, I would definitely take the GLE 450 over the GLE 580, but with the GLS 450 vs the GLS 580, it is more internally arguable. The highlight of the 580 engine is that it is now in the new S-Class. Looks like I got my wish. An S580 gives me joy just thinking about it. Hopefully I get to drive it one day, but it will be quite a long time. The S500 is closer. About the E-active Body Control. Another internal argument there. Personally, I would get it. However, I can see a lot of people who don't really "need" it going ahead and equipping it. It is their money, so I am not going to dictate what they should do with it. I just recommend they try it out first, and see if they want it. I really do love the E-active Body Control, and I will mostly be using "Curve Mode." That mode mixed with the GLS 450 is perfect. That balanced feeling is there. For me, the GLS 450 is slap-dab in the middle with a perfect balance. The GLS 580 leans more towards a more enthusiastic feel in relation to the GLS 450 and the GLS 63. Note: I have sadly not driven the GLS 63. But if someone has, please tell me in-depth about the beast. Now that you mention about the animal skin and the GLS 580, yeah it does seem to further justify me getting the GLS 450. I did not know that animal skin issue was the case with the GLS. It has been a while since I have checked the details and specifications of this GLS. Oh well.
Well I am surrounded by these ultra lux European Cars. The engine choice is more bragging rights, like you said internal decision. 99% of the time driving is 0 to 45 and on about 11 seconds. I also live in a hot climate, so 2 wheel drive is perfect and you only need more power if doing highway or mountain driving, which here there is no hills for thousands of miles away.
Just an explanation point, in curve mode the ride is exactly the same as in comfort, however, the handling is improved significantly. In sport+ the curve mode is active but the suspension is stiffer and it lowers to the lowest level. Handling in sport+ is exactly the same as the AMG 63 which is amazing and surprisingly not rough at all. The E active system is the best part of the GLS and what separates from all the competition.
Been watching your insightful videos on all luxury German, I’ve been on a never ending order list for a gle 53 for over 7 months and counting, what’s your thoughts on SETTLING for a 21’ very lightly used ( no wait list ) gle 580 ? Can’t find much comparisons between the new 53 VS 580?
Nice car - big, expensive! If you want 'big', you could think about a less pricey Transporter T6 Multivan Highline? At 17:53 the van in front was going fast too! Thank you for the review Autogefuhl.
I ordered my 580 in July its not slated for production until December. Thats a terribly long wait. Can't wait for this cursed year to be over. I did order the E active suspension. I agree that for highway driving its a bit of overkill, but throw it on a curvy road at higher speed and the reasoning behind it becomes instantly obvious.
To understand the heated center console, you must understand the "Detroit Lean" driving style. Put your left hand on the top center of the steering wheel, recline the seat, and tilt your body to the mid section of the vehicle. Surprise! your right forearm is now heated. I understand this is not the preferred German driving position, but it does exist and we buy GL/S M.B.'s Cheers! Mr. P
I love your detailed commentary. Your English is almost perfect. But you have a very German style of speaking and sentence structure, plus use of some expressions in a German rather than English format. It would be helpful if you spoke more slowly and more clearly. Then we could enjoy every wonderful one of your observations.
If you take a look at our driving parts of the reviews, you see that we of course have clip-on microphones. However there are several good reasons to use the handheld microphone very often, we do that intentionally. See more details here: th-cam.com/video/q8mbwezd_VY/w-d-xo.html
Why would anyone pay 20,000 Euros more with options included to buy the same car as the GLE? Thomas, you journalists have the opportunity to provide feedback to the manufacturers. You don`t have a stretched E-Class for the S-Class. Let them know it.
yes but unreliable. We sold our beautiful X7 (better in almost every way) because the smart tech was incredibly unreliable. Auto cruise not picking up traffic, auto park trying to crash you into parked cars. Not good enough on a €100k+ car. The GLS was shockingly cheaper materials inside and made the X7 seem like a Bentley but... so far it works. And that comes above everything.
This might be the last generation of internal combustion SUVs that Mercedes would make given the upcoming legislation in many countries. Enjoy it while you can I guess. Older drivers should like this strangely over the S class since it’s easier for us old farts to get in and out of. Which is slightly ironic since soccer moms who want to have an air of youthful wealth like driving these also.
They don't even sell Teslas close to where I live, and charging point infrastructure is piss poor anyway. Why would I buy that? I would rather buy this GLS...or any other car.

hm.. both in the GLS and GLE in the curve mode it always felt somehow different and not as plush as in comfort
Thanks Thomas, great review as always
If we compare Mercedes GLS 580 to BMW X7 M50I, GLS has a little bit more space in the trunk, but X7 is more fun to drive with almost same comfort ?
Doesn’t the rear lights looks similar to the ones of some Citroen models?? 🤔
What a phenomenal piece of engineering, and a phenomenal review. Cheers autogefuehl
Such a complete and professional review. The interior and instruments are so much nicer than the new S class.

GLS has better interior than new S-class
It depends how you define 'better'.
I mean ergonomically much better (AC ect.)
This car is beautiful but I still can’t decide wether I like the gls or x7 more and also audi shall make an flagship full-size SUV
I agree. Same about the GLS vs the X7. They are so close.

PS: Great video review both in USA and Germany. A very fine vehicle!
And I am angry with VW/Audi group because I can no longer get a diesel in the USA and was looking forward to the new inline-6 diesel!

With the amg line exterior the car looks much nicer.
Every time you say: "Drive me to Berlin"
The AI should answer: "No, now you drive me to Berlin!"
No! You drive me to Poland!

Why are you only doing English reviews but no German anymore
That front grill is ugly! the classic version is much better!
after seeing the new E class and s class steering wheel, this steering wheel looks dated
Looks very van-ish.
X7 is the best

Has many underpinnings shared with the GLE which is extremely unreliable. Mercedes can’t fix many of the new MBUX issues.
Go into great detail about the issues with MBUX and the new GLE reliability.
x7 still the king
all the way is 63
What would the next GLS to test, AMG or Maybach❓

buy a volvo xc90 much nicer🙂
