Meet the updated Mercedes big daddy SUV - the GLS!
Mercedes has given its largest SUV a mid-life facelift, and Mat’s got his hands on this behemoth to find out what’s changed and whether it can compete with the likes of the BMW X7 and Range Rover!
When it comes to the exterior design… Well, not a whole lot has changed! Around the rear, you’ll find some of the most obvious fake exhausts in the business, while there’s also some updated lights and a new bumper. Along the side, the only changes are new alloy designs, and upfront, the most notable difference is the huge grille - which is definitely an improvement on the old model!
Step inside and the similarities to the previous gen continue, but thankfully it’s still a pretty luxurious place to sit. There’s a huge digital dial screen (with lots of customisation available) coupled with a big infotainment screen in the centre of the dash. There’s a fair bit of storage throughout the cabin, and the seats are super comfortable. What’s more, bar a few small areas, pretty much everything is coated in soft-touch materials.
There are four engines to choose from with the new GLS. At the start of the range, you can pick a 3-litre straight-six turbo petrol or diesel, and these deliver 380hp and 370hp respectively. At the top-of-the-range is the AMG GLS 63, which is packing a 4-litre twin-turbo V8 that can put down 612hp. All cars come with a 9-speed automatic gearbox and four-wheel drive.
So it sounds pretty impressive, but there’s one issue - the starting price is around £108,000! So is it worth it?! You’ll need to stick with Mat and see for yourself!

When is the Mercedes e63 coming?
You should start reviewing cars again … It’s a shame we only see drag races
I agree but drag races isn't that bad
There weren’t many new cars releasing at the end of the year, I suppose. Hopefully Matt gets some interesting ones to review, coz plenty new interesting cars were revealed this month
Shame? That bad?
You hush, I'm sure there's still plenty of the Doug Demuro catalog you haven't gotten thru
i don't think he stopped reviewing cars, there were just not enough new cars to review
Both the panel gaps, condensation and the fact the touch pad is identical to my A35's is pretty unacceptable at £125k!
Yeah that's what gets me with these top end SUVs. Most buyers probably haven't set foot inside an A Class so they think it's some premium GLS-only equipment in there.
The panel gaps are ridiculous.
Had exactly the same issue with my rear light clusters in my GLE so all had to be changed under warranty. Not great when spending 80k on a car!
The best or nothing……..???
Mercedes penal gaps are huge
Jokes were made about Mercedes build quality in the 2000s, the company has a trap of falling into a "quantity over quality" mindset
Those panel gaps/alignments are unacceptable for a car even half that price
funny thing is that cars that are half the price are still damn expensive AND they don't have this gaps (maybe except of Tesla and other American brands). But this is kinda obvious it was made for USA market
I have a 2021 GLS, first thing I did after watching this video is check for the gaps and there aren’t any in my car
Cant think of a sillier feature on a car than panel alignment. Its such a non issue... Can probably be fixed at the dealer for no cost too. Probably some springs or bolts slightly misadjusted. You guys have no clue how much money and time is needed to make sure every single little gap on a car is perfectly adjusted. Of course they wont adapt factories and spend workforce time on such a silly issue.
Plus, most of these press cars are always the first units from the chain and always have small imperfections. For some big markets maybe they try and mend it, but not for a smallish one like the uk. Merc will not exactly sell millions of these in the UK.
@@AI-qd4vb for an over 100k car, there should be no panel gaps like that. That shows the inconsistency in the manufacturing of their cars. For the ones who actually buy these cars, it matter a whole lot, because it's a huge sign of quality and care for their products. in this case, mercedes doesnt show anywhere near 100k worth of care and quality.
@@AI-qd4vb Good thing to know that it comes from misadjusted springs and bolts, not contorted or bent chasis.

Brake light misalignment in GLS seem so rare.😅
This is a demo car, must have been preproduction or hit at some point, there is a whole team that look over every car that leaves the factory. They would NOT have missed that. Could also be someone closed the boot on something and bent the hinges... The misalligned trim on the doors is because its removable. And its not seated correctly, this happens when people pull on it to close and open the door sometimes. Its easy to line back up :)
This is the first Time i've seen a Mercedes-Benz that has a Misalignment. At least for those produced in Germany. No idea about the ones produced in the USA and elsewhere.
As Matt mentioned, maybe it had an Accident, wouldn't be uncommon at all for a Press Car since not every Car Journalist is actually a good Driver.

@ALFOONUS I've had 5 cars from 3 brands with LED headlights and never noticed condensation in the lights... I really don't think it is normal since that was accross 3 Nissans, a Kia and a Hyundai... also why is it normal? the headlight assemblies should be sealed or made in such a way the lense and beam aren't interfered with to the point isn't condensation in lights a MOT fail? Should point out, I'm not having a go, unlike you did to the other person, these are genuine questions I am curious about since you seam to know the answer.
Matt, thank you so much for picking up the quality control issues with the GLS!!! I had a 2022 model after owning a BMW X7 and was shocked by how poor quality the Merc was for relatively similar money. I sold the £90k model for the executive model at £100k.. My kids climbed into the third row and two bits of trim fell off. I knew it was time to get rid.
I noticed they've improved the options, leather colours etc, but wonder if those horrible "worse than Dacia" buttons still exist around the gear shifter? Honestly, growing up I thought Mercedes were the king of quality. I'm afraid to say BMW are miles ahead.
Panel alignment is one of the biggest issues I have with high end cars. It is as if all those cars have some kind of wonky panels somehow. Exhausts too, charge 150K for a car, at least make the exhausts and panels symmetrical and properly aligned. You see that sometimes on 1 million supercars even.
Mercedes decided to go down the route with cost cutting everywhere. Not only when it comes to materials and rigidity but also assembly precision appearently. The interior design in the GLS, there is no ”S-class” about it. Such a shame!
The crazy thing is all the german car manufacturers are doing the same... They only care how to maximise profit. I hope they can change direction before everyone just laughs when they hear German and quality in the same sentence 😂
@@n9Fingers German brands have gotten to cocky, eventually Chinese manufacturers are gonna pass the Germans...

Tesla-esque panel gaps! Quite shocking QC for a car of that price.
"Teslaesque" panel gaps? Maybe the Teslas made in USA but the Teslas coming out of Shanghai do not exhibit such defects. You seem to think "bland" does not mean quality. The interior materials in the Tesla feel and perform very nicely. Scandinavian designs are also stark but can be very nice. I also wear a Grand Seiko watch. It could be considered "plain" or bland but it is very high-end in quality and finish and accuracy etc. Don't be sucked into Mercedes reputation. The Tesla is at least equal in quality and certainly performs better. My last few cars? Audi Q7, Mercedes E300 estate, Mercedes C350 Coupe, and Audi TTS, Mini John Cooper Works. These are just a few. (I'm fortunate to be able to experience cars often for my wife and I) The Tesla is at worst the equal to those cars and generally much better in most every way. It is sometimes said: "simplicity is a mark of sophistication". For example no driver instruments is much better. People drive cars according to their surroundings not a few gauges. Also 1 pedal driving (with regen) is substantially better than 2 pedal driving with my ICE car. Propulsion by electric motor in my estimation is a better power plant for moving a car than a gas engine. While the C43 has more top end power the slugishness in most normal speeds is frustrating compared with the torque from the dual motor electric. My Tesla just turned 29,000 miles. Zero issues with only filling the windshield washer fluid and the fit and finish very impressive. But my Tesla comes out of the Shanghai facility which apparently is superior to the US built equivalents. The electric cars coming out of China are on oar with German ICE cars. I just ordered an MG Cyberster (have a search and check it out) 2 seat Roadster dual motor electric with 544hp. Incredible performance and quality too. Delivery mid summer.
