We had the book "Henry's magic eye" or something at my primary school library, which everyone loved for the secret pop out 3D images, which I never once saw. I also thought 3D movies were overhyped because they just looked messy and not even 3D. I got a 3DS when I was 12 or so, and played with the 3D off because it didn't really do a lot for me. Turns out I had amblyopia, but instead of realising I was missing out, I just assumed all 3D products were a bit shit lol

If it makes you feel any better, most of them are a bit shit, even for people with perfectly functioning eyes. I know a lot of people who have absolutely nothing wrong with them who can never see the images in hidden eye images, and the 3ds 3D effect is pretty shallow even when working correctly

Back in early 2011 I was in army and I listened a ton of radio because of this. A popular rock station in my country ran a campaign where the hosts played the release titles and it felt really bizarre to me at the time. It felt odd that Nintendo would market their device so heavily on a station that mostly men between the ages 30-50 would listen to.
I wonder if Nintendo changed their marketing because they were worried that parents would refuse to buy 3DS for their children?

As someone who is very nearsighted, I loved using the 3D on games it worked with. I didn't notice much if any eye strain from it. But not long after I got my first 3Ds my eyes got bad enough to where the range away from my eyes I generally held my 3DS was getting blurry from my nearsightedness getting worse. The head tracking in the new 3DS helped a LOT.
And no I don't think the 3DS made my eyes any worse. I'm genetically predisposed to nearsightedness and both my parents have it, my mom's eyes are even worse than mine. The rate they got worse didn't change when I started using the 3DS and leveled out well before I stopped using the console, as I imagine would be expected as I had finished growing.

I swear I was so used to the 3D effect that I'd turn it on in any game I could and would get upset with games that just didn't have it enabled because of framerate issues (I'm looking at you, Pokemon Y). It was just so cool and made the games feel much more alive to me, though it is also true that with some of them it was hard to play with 3D on for a long period of time (2+ hours).
An example of that would be Dead or Alive Dimensions, where the 3D effect would make the separation between the characters on the screen and the background elements SO deep that it'd start giving actual dizziness looking at it for that long, so I would either turn it down to a minimal level or turn it off completely. The fact that you had to look at the screen straight and any angle would mess it up kinda sucked but wasn't too bad to deal with. Still wish I had the chance to trade my old 3DS for a new one back then lol.
    With that said, great video!

I'm only 2min and 30s in, and I need to pause to say that I'd like to see an alternate reality where Sony didn't sabotaged the Vita themselves because they decided that all of their investments had to go to the PS4, it would be a very different market by now if they had kept supporting the studios developping exclusively handheld games mostly since the PsP. The PS4 wouldn't have been as huge of a success but with continuous support the Vita would have crushed it Capcom would have had to change their mind (no Monster Hunter on Vita is also a very "game changing" side of the story), they'd definitely have released a Vita 2 and I'm curious to know how it would have changed Nintendo's and Microsoft's plans and consoles. Maybe the hugely successful hybrid console of the market would be a Sony one, and knowing their way to embrace technology, it would have been a powerhouse compared with the Switch.

One thing I noticed with my 3DS, is that if you turn on the 3D, there is this little red light inside the camera (though I may remember wrong), and it really felt like the 3D effect followed your eyes to a small extent. I assume the face tracking (if there is any, as it really felt like there was) is there to be able to show you the clearest image possible.

One thing I want to mention at 13:00 is the newer 3ds models actually had a wider viewing angle for the 3d, and are much more comfortable experiences. I don't know exactly how they worked, but they basically used the camera to track your head's position to shift the "fence" in your analogy so that the effect didn't warp or break down until you got to some pretty extreme angles.

The difference: I got glasses to handle an astigmatism. I still had 20/15 vision even with the fuzz, but especially staring at a computer monitor for 8 hours at a go would be *really* taxing. Glasses fixed that, and let me enjoy the 3D in the 3DS as well.

saw your jon bois inspired video about the fraudulent researcher, and I'm glad your other videos are just as high quality even if they arent in the same style. but I gotta say, the transition to the title card - starting from a macro shot of a monitor's pixel grid and going into a really wacky, dithered mess until it becomes the title card - was absolutely gorgeous. maybe I feel as such because that mess of dithering in the middle of the transition is directly pandering to my love of the ditherpunk aesthetic (think of a GIFs lossy image quality used with artistic intent rather than a compromise for the sake of file size) but I love it a lot. If you're interested in trying out a new aesthetic for a new video, I recommend playing Critters For Sale to get a good feel for that kind of style. It's a cheap, mildly unsettling game due to its heavy usage of image morphing and that one image modification program that can take an image of a person and stamp a smile on them to create an intentional feeling of uncanniness which is made more uncanny by the ditherpunk style, but the humor within the game also makes it incredibly entertaining and accessible for cowardly idiots like me who can't stand jumpscare-slut horror games but love the unsettling psychological nature of them.
TL;DR: title card transition make my brain go brrrr good job consider doing it more
edit: if you *are* interested in making something within the ditherpunk style, I used Davinci Resolve as a video editor and purchased a plugin for Resolve known as Retro Dither, which makes the process of creating dithered gorgeousness as easy as moving sliders and clicking buttons. I used it to create a background video for a chart I made on Clone Hero and in my opinion, it kicks a lot of ass lmao. I believe Retro Dither is also available for Premiere and After Effects, but not Vegas - which I believe is the software you use. that said, I'm sure doing a web search for "dither plugin for Sony Vegas" will pop at least some results.

I'm 20 and my weak eye(my left eye) is still a problem from time to time, not that bad considering my right eye is just fine(well right eye has gotten slightly weaker but not too much).

Even as a nine year old I was baffled. My best guess is that it had to do with long proven falsities related to seizures, but that's stretching it considering the average elementary schooler doesn't know what epilepsy is, nor was that the main concern in any media coverage at the time.

The "New" 3DS XL is my favorite nintendo console for a multitude of reasons. One of them being the 3d itself. I think it adds so much to games that utilize it properly. I just finished Kirby Tripple Deluxe and that games uses the 3d just how I feel it should. It makes the game pop just a bit more than it would if it was off. It adds a depth to it the game lacks without the 3d. I will say the "New" 3DS makes seing the 3d easier to me. I really wish nintendo and othet company's really went all out with the 3d on the conole and used it to its best advantage. Imagine if companies and especially Nintendo had kept trying harder with the 3d effect to really get it down in games. Games on the 3DS dont look right unless they are in 3d to me. Sadly there are some games like Pokemon Sun and Moon that dont even have the ability to use the 3d and that really sucks.

I remember LG made a 3D phone with the same idea, with parallax and the dual camera system. I'm glad I waited until the 3DS XL to get mine (they had dropped the price and had good games out). My dad also had one of those Panasonic TVs with the flicker thing, but I'm so glad 3D TVs now use the polarized glasses as the flickering causes headaches. • @angelorf
    @angelorf 2 ปีที่แล้ว +24

You're missing one important point. In real world vision the distance of an object determines both the difference in angle between the eyes, but also the amount of focus. For objects which are closer the eyes are angled more toward each other, and the lenses of the eyes are more round to get the picture in focus. With a 3DS these two systems have to be decoupled, because your focus is based on the distance to the screen, but the angle between the eyes is determined by the 3D images being shown. When your brain learns to decouple these two systems they might work less well in the real world, meaning that your focus is not in tune with the distance to objects. This might lead to blurred vision or perhaps even to the need of glasses. These problems are even bigger for systems like the 3DS, because at close range the effects of focus and looking direction are more pronounced. I haven't done empirical research, though. I'm not sure at which age these systems are considered fully formed or whether its possible for the brain to decouple these systems. Nevertheless I think it's a big oversight not to mention the relation between focus and vergence.

Ive always loved being able to view 3D images on 2D material. I even have a lenticular poster on my wall of some vampire bint.
As for the controversy, I remember it being a huge thing at the time. Didnt stop me buying one though, coz TV generally talks nonsense. They love that whole "panic the masses" stuff.

Then they released the 'New' models, and the 3D became a truly outstanding feature that should always be turned on.

Hey there, I heard the LEGO City Undercover Police Station Ambience used in the section around 19 minutes in. Just noticed it wasn't in the music credits, probably a mix up?

I remember picking up my 3DS a few days before the official price drop date. Walmart lowered the price a few days early, so I got the discount and the free games.

11:34 Slight correction/detail: most games render in 240x400 even in 2d mode, so each pixel rendered will be displayed as two pixels on the screen

I remember back in 2011, I was living in London and was signed up to the Nintendo Club. I got an invite to the launch party for the 3DS and Plan B was playing live. Haha, good times!
