I love all of the implied lore in the game. The whole thing, despite its space western vibe, is set in a ultra-capitalist hellscape where a few megacorporations are basically feudal lords fighting over planets and sucking them dry of all resources. The biggest questions that Borderlands invites you to ask is WHY the planet is covered in trash and bandits, why guns are ubiquitous but water is scarce, why talented mercenaries are hunting for treasure instead of working for someone. All of this becomes more explicit in later games but it was all there from the beginning.

You can call Roland a 'human fighter' but I played him like a cleric. I went down his support tree and getting similar skills. I could shoot my friends to heal them, my turret had a healing aura if you stood close, and my turret would launch out packages that gave ammo and grenades to myself and friends. Yeah, it made it slower, but once I got the mod that increased everyone's magazine size by 78% (yes, friends included) and regenerated everyone's ammo, we never ran out of bullets and could shoot with reckless abandon.
Edit to add stupid funny story from the first time we played: after one of the first few quests, you get a class mod and we all had a good laugh at the name of the achievement. 'There are some who call me...Tim' achievement was a nice laugh for us all, not because of the Monty Python reference, but due to my name being Tim and us all now being Tim apparently.
Edit 2 for further stupidity: I drove my friends crazy when we got to certain towns as I'd hunt down my 'favorite' npc and make him repeat "Welcome to hell" over and over because apparently, they could hear the NPC speak when I did this.

Borderlands was easily the foundation of the way a "Looter Shooter" should be made. Basically on par with the tone Halo Combat Evolved set for FPS's. You gotta love the OG's :D

    The balancing of BL1

The vibe I get from Borderlands 1 is this Wild West post - gold rush journey that few games really explore. Its not the apocalypse, its not some golden age. Its just hardcore recession. Borderlands 2 picks up on that backstory a little bit in the caustic caverns where Tannis tells you about why there are so many psychos on Pandora in the first place and I really like how that side quest in BL2 recontextualized BL1 for me. Its just people left behind after the corporations couldn't squeeze out any more valuables out of it.
Its a somewhat timeless feeling in the setting of the world. Very beautiful, very simple yet effective. Storywise there really isn't much to say. Collect pieces of a MacGuffin , have a master mind steal the key item from you after doing the dirty work for them and now you chase them for revenge and then to get the promised loot. Its not much and clearly it didn't need it either given what it sparked later down the road in its own franchise.
Its worth playing, especially on PC with some mods that alter some of the quality of life experience.

In my personal revisit of the entirety of the game series in order, I gained a newfound appreciation for BL1. Though I’m mostly doing one-and-done playthroughs in this revisit, there’s a part of me that while I’m currently playing 2 wants to go back and do a new run of 1. You can very obviously tell in the DLCs for 1 that they found their footing for the direction they wanted to go for 2, but the base game itself is a wholly unique experience unbound by very much. It gives that same feeling I get of wandering New Vegas with nothing but the Mr. New Vegas serenading me with oldies from time well past, only it’s Claptrap telling me there’s new missions at the New Haven Bounty Board. It’s a tad simpler there, like coming home from a long day at work

I came to Borderlands VERY late, it was after 2015 when I started playing it. I had started the game before that but I just didn't 'get' it. I couldn't parse what was going on, didn't understand the idea of "playthrough 2" and more.
So I left it in the drawer and played other things. Eventually I decided to try the game again, finally beat Sledge and started to click with what was going on.
Now I've played 1, 2, 3 and pre-sequel. Each game has ridiculous levels of depth and re-playability (just check Joltzdude's videos to see that) and I have a blast whenever I load them up.

My friend had me play through this game years after we had played through a majority of 2 and Pre-Sequel and it was special. The best moment was when he got the Pestilent Defiler at level 19. It was the only weapon he used for the rest of the game. He fully invested into Plaguebearer Lilith and the entire game from that point on was him giving every enemy we came across "The Sick".

I'm glad I wasn't the only one when it came to the Legendaries in this game. The first I got was at like Level 7 or something ridiculous, it was a Fire Sniper Rifle that has X4 burn on it, somehow it remained the best weapon I had up until like Level 20. It truly felt Legendary.
I think I picked it up like a year after it came out. Just browsing the pre-owned section in my local video store. And yeah, I became addicted to Borederlands as a franchise and the looter shooter genre ever since.

The Lance Hideout (where you go after Krom) is probably one of the greatest places to farm loot. Multiple Badasses and red chests made it pretty fun for me before I got the Secret Armory of General Knoxx.
Quick edit: So I paused the video about nine minutes through because I gotta say that the Roland playthrough I had was insane on my old 360. I had a ton of ammo regeneration, but honestly? I didn't know jack about builds. I just got whatever looked good to me, skill wise. A perk that gives me 2.5% ammo regeneration while my turret is active? Uh yeah, sign me the hell up please. A purple rarity Torgue Steel Shotgun that does more damage than the legendary rocket launcher that I have? Sure, why not. My "grail gun" (to quote Zach Hazard) was the Atlas Gorgon, a Legendary Atlas revolver that shifted between each element either per shot or per reload, I don't remember, but that was the one legendary that I had never been able to get. By the end of it all, I had a heap of ammo regen from perks and my Support Gunner COM, and was regenerating ammo faster than I was using it.

BL1 nails that "Mad Max meets Trigun" vibe better than the later games.
3:54 That right there is a hybrid of a burger and a Dagwood. In fact, that's more Dagwood than most Dagwoods! And yes, the Dagwood sammich is named after the classic comic strip character (who was notorious for making comically huge sammiches with lots of layers just like Shaggy and Scooby).
4:55 That was "The Middle of Nowhere," right? That one nook tucked away in a cranny in Rust Commons East.
6:09 Trackballs are better. Change my mind. Gotta be the symmetrical kind for gaming, though.
8:41 Tina perceives Roland as a Lawful Good Paladin.
8:50 Plaguebearer build w/Maliwan Plague (wrongly called "Crux" in-game).
10:12 All throughout playthru-1, and throughout most of playthru-2, any piece of gear could potentially last nine levels before it was outmoded because of the way certain manufacturer's goods occur on specific level tiers. For example, S&S goes from Lv.13 to 22, then 31, 40, et cetera. That level tier brand system becomes void around Lv.47-50 or so. Then anything can be of any level regardless of manufacturer.
10:44 Like Dahl, a lot of S&S weapons are well-balanced. Their main weakness is slow reload, which makes sense because bigger mags are heavier. Apart from that, their machine guns will have slow fire rate with even-numbered body types, but will do just fine with odd-numbered body types. The one you have there has body2 (fire rate of 4.9).
    Note:
11:10 I've always wished "safari rifles" were a regular weapon type. They'd be a sub-category of "sniper rifles" that always had iron sights and no scope, which is in keeping with how safari hunting was actually done. This was to keep peripheral vision open, allowing for an intuitive and adaptive style of hunting. Plus, it's just satisfying to score long-Sh0ts with Ir0n sights. Mordy, Zer0, Sir Hammerlock, and "Twainwright" Jakobs would all back me up on that. A consistent feature with "safari rifles" should be that they deal "massive damage" per Sh0t (and maybe also have ultra-high crit bonus). There's also such a thing as a "payload rifle" which in-game would be an explody sniper rifle (like the Torgue Cobra). IRL, it's more like a direct-fire grenade launcher. Imagine a cross between a safari rifle and a payload rifle!
    14:52 Mad Max AND Trigun!
17:24 OG BL1 (or "Oscar Golf Bravo Lima One" as Axton would say) when it first came out in 2009. Being 29 at the time (same age as James Rolfe), I'd grown up on the Mad Max original trilogy.

Yeeeessss. I am so excited for you to be talking about the other BL games. I just started playing 1, 2, 3, and the pre-sequel after playing tales from the borderlands which was my introduction to this world and I cannot stop thinking about them. They are so much fun and now these games mean so much to me after ignoring them for years, but now playing them as an adult I think I can appreciate them more now then when I was a kid. I can really understand these characters and just feel like a badass being them in this awesome world. It definitely is distinct from 2 and the other follow-ups. In some ways, it's actually better. Mechanically it's not as good, and it's a bit too brown and grey visually, but it's also not a technicolour explosion of the sequels, and all that colour and visual effects can be a bit much. In a way, it's a bit refreshing to come back to it after playing the rest.
Don't forget about the drop-in/out co-op. The video didn't really emphasize how neat that was as an option (even if I personally didn't use it too much). It's something that became more popular after this game came out too.
Lilith was my favourite to play, especially with the double anarchy (I still want them to bring that line of SMGs bag. Ultra close range bullet hose!

BL1 was the first game I got on steam, and will almost certainly be my favorite game of all time. I've completet the main story -DLC in one sitting multipletimes, I just love the atmosphere. I know about 50-75% of the quest by heart, but I dosent take away even a slither of the fun I have completing them. I could only drag myself through Diablo 3' story once, and then exclusively playing adventure/season. And while the story was awsome, It's quests and characters just never captured like BL did.

The 1st feels so janky and ridiculous, so much that its not fun.
We got to the Mine Gate key and we got to level 13, did all the side quests we could find, and our weapons were very weak. It was not an enjoyable experience. Plus the intro cutscene didnt play, maybe because its the One X version we got? We honestly skipped it, we are going to start the Pre-Sequel then do 2.

Gunplay is great in both, the style is beautiful in its own way, and the feel of the world just... works.
The only thing I didn't like about 1 were the Eridian enemies towards the end. So. Damn. Annoying. Otherwise - both of those games are masterpieces, that can be enjoyed both solo and in co-op.

Borderlands 1 and Saint Row 2 had that brand of humor that their sequels lost... The world is craAAaaAAazy, but the characters in it react normally to it, and THAT sells the humor ! as you said, Pandora is BLEAK ! It's not friday night as usual or a living breathing shooting gallery, it's a devastated world filled with an abandonned criminal workforce and the people forced to live alongside these guys.
I think of it as the Warhammer Orks, sure, their attitude and antics are hilarious, but in-universe, when a green boyz enters the room, someone's gonna die, no question. Or the naked gun series, or Monty Pythons : if you want to SELL wacky humor, you cannot, under any circumstances, wink at the camera ! The wackiest it gets, the more deadpan you have to respond in-universe. And these various games that try to follow suit are constantly winking at how funny their own jokes are... That's why I never made it past the second boss in B2, That's why I never touched Saint Row 3.
Also, my gun was the Brutal Masher as Mordecai, ammo-regenerating, tight-spread, enhanced-crit shotgun revolver i looted at lv 36 and only at 62-63 did I find it starting to lack DPS ;7
