Kellam Noita Puukko. Fun fact: Noita means witch in finnish. Btw, here (Sweden) we use sort of icepicks/iceawls (isdubbar) hanging at the neck in case of walking no thin ice and falling in. They come in pairs and are truly a lifesaver.

A friend of mine carries a neck knife slipped securely under her sports bra when she goes jogging. She's never needed it but gives her an added feeling of security when she's not using it to snip errant threads.

Hey DCA, I'm an average sized guy and dont like a ton of bulk in my pockets, as such, I find that I am almost always drawn toward what many manufacturers dub a "mini" or the like. Seems to me that these "mini" versions are actually a more pocket friendly daily carry whereas thier counterparts are, in reality, oversized. Could you guys possibly make a video focused solely on comparing the many minis to eachother? Thanks for the hard work and great content.

    • @c62west
      @c62west 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

That's a great idea for a video. I'm plus-sized but prefer minis. I cary mini fixed-blade knives in my pocket as pocket knives. The MKM Mikro 1 and 2 are great knives, if you're up to sharpening M390. The LT Wright Buckeye is a great mini in D2. The Bark River City Knife in Elmax is another favorite. Tops' Mini Tanimboca Puukko is TRULY a mini neck knife. It's in 1095 steel. The Benchmade Hidden Canyon Hunter is available in at least 2 great steels. Mine is S30V. It's blade is 2.8 inches. It's small enough that it's comfortable on a belt in its leather sheath, but you may enjoy it inside a pocket. The handle and sheath are relatively thin.

Re: "the point of neck knives"
Don't forget there are knife GALS out here like me! Women's clothing notoriously has small pockets, fake pockets, or no pockets. Neck carry is my primary method because I can wear anything I want, and my blade is always close at hand. I don't have to plan my outfits around my knife. *Also want to note I'm a back country girl who's into hunting, fishing, foraging, and bushcraft, so I'm not out here doing my nails or whatever you boys think we do with our knives. A lot of times I get caught up in a task and realize I should've already had my blade out. A neck knife is easier to get to than something hip mounted that may have a clasp of some kind to fumble with.
Neck knives are versatile, lightweight, and, above all, easy to access from a variety of positions. Pocket knives are great, when you have pockets, but even then, I almost always have my neck knife, just in case!

    • @Swearengen1980

No one had pockets or anywhere to put knives until the 1800s. That was the purpose of the neck knife, so you nailed it.

All the best with the move, Mr. Andersen. It's good to see you gentlemen back. On neck knives, I'll add that wearing it under the shirt isn't just for "tactical" purposes. I often carry a necker, so that if all goes awry with my main folder or fixed blade, I still have a knife on my person.

I used a neck knife when doing household hazardous waste collections. We wore Tyvek coveralls to keep ourselves clean and trying to unzip one and get down to a pocket was not easy. But unzipping a bit and getting a neck knife was easy. I did though go from a fixed blade to a folder in a kydex sheath because I once thought I had the point in the sheath and didn't, so I ended up stabbing myself. In the end, the goto was a Spyderco Endura with a ZDP blade because a lot of cardboard and things would get cut.

Thanks for doing this series, DCA, I look forward to it every Saturday.
I’ve got a DPX Gear frame-lock knife that has two washers on one side and a single washer on the other. I’ve owned a lot of folders and have never seen this before and was wondering what the point of multiple washers on a single side is in a design. Is this more common than I think? Does it have something to do with it being a frame-lock? I’m left-handed and this is my only frame-lock because lefty frame-locks are rarer than unicorns it seems.
Keep the great videos coming and extra thanks for not having ads in them! I up vote every knifecenter video for that much appreciated feature alone.

From what I have read on food safe kitchen knives:
ANSI/NSF 51-1997 defines food equipment materials.
Basically to meet the standard the knife must have 12-15% Chromium and be properly hardened/tempered, or better yet have 16%+ Chromium which meets the criteria even with an improper heat treat.
Also, while not part of the standard, its suggested to stay away from Cobalt which is potentially cancerous [eg VG-10].
Smoother surface the better, with mirror polish being ideal - no hammering or forgescale etc.
For handle materials its best to stay away from porous materials like micarta and unsealed wood that could potentially harbor bacteria in hard to wash places. Also, avoid non food safe metals on the handle like copper, brass, bronze and non stainless steel. Make sure all other materials are food contact safe like hardware and adhesives.

The Buck 112 slim is my pocket knife. Set the angle to 15° and it’s a crazy slicer. I broke down a large cardboard box and it was still super sharp. Won’t hold an edge like “supersteels” but comes back to razor sharp very easily. Lightweight in the pocket and the clip isn’t all that bad, although a bit overdone. Great knife for under $30. Go and grab one.

In the winter time I like to carry fixed blades outside of the clothes around the neck OR like a shoulder bag. It reduces the tendency to get the knife in the way if what you are doing when preparing a fire. It is almost like having a gun in a shoulder holster outside of you clothes. Very practical! Also, I use normal sheaths so the knives are tip down, much safer to re-sheath.

Like you said with bulky clothes like bibs for hunting or fishing, it’s much easier to access, and same with waders when it’s practically impossible to reach your pockets. I'm a paraplegic. A neck knife is just a super handy thing if you don't have easy pocket access.
That said, in the front pouch of my tactical man purse usually has a PM2, M4 Bailout, Manix, or Shaman.
There's also a cheapo lockback that is a "hand out" knife from when I was "gift" when I joined the NRA before they, well this is the wrong place to deep dive that.

it’s nice having a small fixed blade and they are super cheap and usually I have to tie a string to the sheath for static carry anyway and neck knives are already so similar. I’ve never carried one on my neck. i like large fixed blades to be thin similar to a kitchen knife with about a six inch blade but I like my smaller fixed blades to be for hard use and for wood carving. if i’m jogging i will put my wharncliffe dragonfly 2 inside my waistband using the mini deep carry pocket clip and it is light enough that it doesn’t bounce around at all.

My question is one I can't find much information about online.
Q: How much blade play is an acceptable amount of blade play? Is it bad to have any at all? Is it unsafe, or just something inconsequential that knife fans like to complain about?

A word of caution about the Buck 112 Slim for kids:
I recognize the clip as being the same one they use for the Budgie. I love the knife itself, but that clip is a disaster waiting to happen. The edge sticking out makes it easy to find your pocket, but it’ll also scratch the hell out of your car’s paint if you brush up against it. It’s the ONLY knife I own which does this. It will literally cut the top layer of cardboard if you have to squeeze by some boxes. (I work in package delivery and had to stop carrying the Budgie for this reason. 🚚 📦)

Just a comment on that tiny lost screw on your Benchmade…my favorite daily pocket knife is a small Enzo folder I bought some years ago. Not long after getting it one of the tiny little Torx screws attaching the pocket clip fell out and was lost. I searched (online, phone calls, knife shops, screw manufacturers) everywhere for months to find a replacement. Finally contacted Enzo in Finland to get it. Oh yeah, was sure to use a little Loctite and it has not come out again. This knife has 2 different lengths if these little buggers, so I ordered 4 or 5 extras of each. Be prepared, right? That was a few years back, I have no recollection where I put them, and if I need another, I really doubt I will ever find that little 1 inch square baggie of little teeny screws again, lol. In my case, it didn’t affect the knife or scales, but rendered the pocket clip all floppy and useless. Glad your missing screw, nothing personal, lol, doesn’t affect the knife. My advice, try Benchmade directly, or forget about it, don’t waste a lotta time looking elsewhere.
Love your knife videos and info. Thanks!

I have been using knives since my Scout days decades ago, and cannot remember ever wanting to cut cardboard, apart from my daughters' school project. I get the same response from everyone I asked. - a hard blade (preferably D2 or harder)
    - more or less casually looking, so customers won't be intimidated
    - about $100
I'm currently using a Böker Plus Jive, which is almost a match, but the detent is a good amount too strong for easy opening (and it's also a framelock)
I'm hoping you could help me find one

After I strop a knife, I drag the edge through the wood of the handle of my strop, this way any particles that are on the edge get embedded into the wood and I don’t end up ingesting anything.

Hey DCA, I’ve recently started a new job as a painter and been looking for a new work knife. 2-3 inch blade length, washers not bearings, sheepsfoot or wharncliff, has to be slim and light with high fidget factor, and preferably USA made. Budget less than $100, but willing to go a lil higher for better materials. Also if there’s anything out there I can use to open paint cans with is a perk (obviously I could use any blade tip to open a paintcan if I wanted to destroy the tip of my knife which I don’t want to do).

As a police officer the use of a neck knife is very nice. In my department we wear outer carry vests, so I wear a neck knife over my polo and under my vest, it’s easily accessible to take out of the sheath thru the openings by the arm.

Greetings DCA and crew, I’m a market gardener. Day to day I cut twine, irrigation tubing, landscape fabric and of course veggies. My knife gets wet, muddy and gritty. My son gifted me a Spyderco chaparral LW a few years ago, and I use it constantly, but I’m looking for something a bit longer, a bit less expensive, and with less emotional attachment. I love the “sliceyness” of a full flat grind, and leaf, drop point, sheepsfoot or wharncliff shaped blades. I’m also looking for a knife with similar qualities that I can gift to my new interns; preferably in the under $30 price range. Thanks!!!

    • @arrowheadguys7637
      @arrowheadguys7637 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

You might consider a fixed blade, easier to keep clean in dirty conditions and readily accessible from a sheath at the waistline

    • @kirstenclemente7033
      @kirstenclemente7033 2 ปีที่แล้ว

@@arrowheadguys7637 I know you’re right, and I use a simple, cheap Victorinox harvest knife and sheath when I’ll be spending dedicated time harvesting. However, we open our farm to the public a few days a week, and I prefer a more discrete option. Plus, I want to introduce my interns to the satisfaction of having a knife when they need it, and I’d like to give them their own folder to keep.

Hey there DCA! I recently purchased a Civivi Conspirator, and I love most aspects about it. However, I chose the wooden handle, which I find to be dangerously slippery! While flipping it open, I’ve had it fly out of my hands a few times. Any suggestions on ways to customize it to add grip so that my knife fidgeting doesn’t result in injury? Thanks for everything that you do, and cheers to Thomas and Seth as well.

Huh, interesting problem. I wonder what others have done. If it were a fixed blade you could put ranger bands/bicycle inner tube, or wrap it with jute twine, paracord, etc. But folder...hmmm... only thing I can think of is maybe cutting strips of grip tape or looking into something firearm related that improves grip, maybe from Hogue or HandleItGrips? I dunno how pretty it'll be or how much that matters to you, but I think it would work. 🤷‍♂️ Maybe they, or another commenter, will have a better solution for you. I gave it a shot 🙃😆

Hello DCA, I am looking for a small fixed blade EDC with serrations, but I don't want a blade that is half plain edge and half serrations on the main edge, as typically done, because a full plain edge has more versatility and meets my needs better, however, I would like serrations available. Do you know of any 3.5 in or under blades that are plain edge on the main side, but serrated on the back side?

You mentioned the Spyderco Ark for jogging. Actually, that's not possible. The constant rubbing/pounding of the knife and sheath would cause a major distraction, not to mention skin irritation. As a long time runner, I have aways looked for the best knife to run with. I have been running with a Native 5 the last few years. I am always on the lookout for alternatives.
It must be STAINLESS, less than 2.45 oz. Have a clip for pocket and deploy easily. Thumb studs snag on running shorts. Thumb holes work but ovals and odd shaped holes are difficult to deploy after many miles when you loose fine motor skills in you hand. What have you got?

Hello, quick question: what's the best gentleman's folder for parting an apple or orange behind the desk? So: with the fruit in the hand and not on a plate or cutting board? I thought a sheepsfoot, hornblade with a flipping tip. However... Find one for a reasonable price. I found some; but not under $400-$500. And that's already pricy, for let's face it, just a flipping out folding knife. My Buck I have now, classic 110, served me well for 17 years, but now the juices of the fruits are winning the fight from the steel. Rust is gaining. I'm not eating rust, so I'm looking for a new knife.
To make the search even more difficult, I'm really a South paw. So opening and closing a Benchmade will be best, but in the lawyers office I work: all non wooden handle knifes are considered tactical and fall out of place.
Last time I opened my para2: the secretaries almost started running. My Buck isn't that must smaller: but the appearance is much, much less creapy, so I seems. Can you help out?

Neck knives: Because we didn't have pockets, belts, or belt loops. Larger knives were tucked into a sash, but historically neck knives were used for kitchen and small tasks, always within reach because there was no other practical way to carry it. That trend carried on for centuries, right up through Colonial America, Mountain men, etc. until more or less modern clothing was invented. It was a matter of practicality, as simple as that. Personally I use an ESEE Izula 2 as a neck knife. Primarily for when I'm on a walk or working in the yard in gym clothes and don't want a pocket knife weighing down the shorts.

Hi DCA and Knifecenter team. I have recently gotten a new job as an outdoor instructor teaching all things outdoors which includes knife skills such as fine carving, bushcraft, and feather sticking to name a few. I have used a falknieven s1 pro for the past few years and have been getting asked for some cheaper alternatives to my s1 pro. I have been recommending condor and mora knives but is there something else you would recommend under 100$? Ideally scandi or convex grind and no steel preferences

Both good alternatives! Cold Steel probably has some good options, the SRK and the small SRK come to mind, but not Scandi, Brisa, TOPS, Esee, L.T. Wright, Reel Steel, and Ruike all make some solid options.

DCA, Love the content, and could use your help. I am looking for a EDR (Every Day Running) knife. I will go on runs from 5-10 miles in somewhat rural area, and am looking for a knife to take along for basic utility (openning protein pouches), and basic protection if needed (i.e. coyotes, or other rare wildlife run ins…). Criteria: No neck knives (they bang around too much), must have a clip of some sort, can be fixed or folder, prefer smaller, definitely light-weight, prefer cheaper (but willing to go up to $100), bonus points if they are sweat-proof (non-rusting). Thx in advance!

Gerber has some skeletonized fixed blades that would work well, and are cheap enough not to mind losing if it falls off while running. I keep one in my truck for opening salt bags when plowing or cutting weedeater line as a backup to my pocket knife.

I think DCA might recommend the Ka-Bar Dozier. It made it onto his "ultralight" video some time ago, so you know it is light enough. It also has a version with a coating on the blade to help with corrosion. To top it all off, it is quite affordable if you ever have to replace it.
