Another great budget option for a knife with a finger choil would be the Cold Steel Tuff Lite. It's not a very big blade, but the handle is comfortable and it's probably the cheapest option out there as well.

I work in a liquor store too and I use the HK/Hogue Micro Incursion OTF. I’ve tried a bunch of knives and lock types at work and found that an otf is the most convenient style of knife to use when cutting boxes and stocking shelves. It’s so small I don’t even need to put it up when grabbing bottles and it doesn’t scare non knife people.

It's over budget, but the Victorinox "winemaster" makes a much better tool for getting corks out of wine bottles, because it has a two-stage lever and not just a corkscrew on its own - which gives it the utility of a traditional "waiter's friend" tool. Personally, I would just buy a waiter's friend for about $10 and then buy a nice knife separately.

  • @Ajaxykins
    @Ajaxykins 2 ปีที่แล้ว

DCA's right on the toothy edge, but he didn't get too much in to the how part. My best recommendation on this is get a nice coarse stone (Baryonyx american mutt, Norton crystolon, Norton coarse/medium india would be my choices) and sharpen at a nice THIN primary bevel to get a burr on both sides. Then raise the angle a good bit and micro bevel with the same stone to remove the burr. The keys here are thin primary bevel for good geometry slicing things then when you de burr use edge-leading strokes with LIGHT pressure, and try to get the microbevel done in a few strokes per side alternating each stroke as to not make the microbevel too large.

A "tip" for a unique bird's beak paring knife and gift, if you're not afraid of doing a lot of filing/grinding and substantial modifications. Just take knife of appropriate length and a flat edge (basically, a mostly vanilla wharncliffe and sheepshoof profile will do,), as the general shape is already the same sans the gentle concave curve, so you just need to remove a bit of material. In some rather thin ones, making the edge concave by repetitive rough and aggressive sharpening is a common type of "irreparable" damage (to people who only use one style of blade and can't see how it could easily be turned into another and then taken better care). On a grinding wheel in particular, it doesn't take much time at all. Just mess around with some flat trash stock or some trashy knife imitations from the dollar store or some such first if you lack the practice. And then boom, it is a literal one of a kind custom knife, with the build quality and overall design of a professionally made knife that might already be liked by the giftee.

For the toothy edge question: some steels (seemingly those with larger carbide structures-but Google can help!) benefit from finishing the edge asymmetrically: put an edge on one side with a lower grit like 600, and finish the other side with higher grit, like 1500+. If I’m remembering correctly, steels like m390 benefitted a lot from this-other steels much less so. I don’t remember if S30 did or not. The edge is both toothy and smooth, allegedly resisting carbide tear-outs that can happen with a lower grit finish overall, while still benefiting from the microserrations the carbide and lower grit provide. It’s worth the experiment at least :)

Also, for the sgian-dubh gentleman. Something like that cold steel, you can easily turn it into a "plastic in leather" sheath (basically a modern take on wood core "leather" scabbards). The good classic looks with modern functionally. You can do something super basic that is just gluing leather very close to shape and making it meet at the back or to one side (this one does look better with some "fastening" (technically just for aesthetics, the glue is what is holding it together and it is the plastic that gives it shape and structure) which just requires the leather (duh), glue and a fresh utility knife/sharp knife; or go as elaborate as you wish/can. With just a little more skill and a few extra tools, you can easily modify the handle too. If one can get the scales off, replacing them with wood, horn or bone for a more traditional look is a no brainer.

Remember when I asked you if the Shirogorov vs the Chris Reeves were worth it? I have both now and I like the CR SIGNIFICANTLY more than the Shiro. When you first get the Ursus, it’s a little bit difficult to open it. You need a hold just so otherwise it will not open. I now have three CR’s. So I would definitely say it is worth it, maybe just don’t get one of the Bog Oak in lay, or anything else fancy if you plan to every day carry. The wood inlay are DELICATE….😩 cannot tell if I like the Sebenza or the Inkosi more. The later glides open but the former feels more sturdy despite needing to guide it open. Weird.

Was wondering what some of the best regionally traditional knives (ex. Inuit, Turkish, Scandinavian… etc) or historically traditional knives (medieval, indigenous… etc) are available now. Preferably under $100 and made in the region that made it popular, but one or the other or neither is fine. I love traditional knives and want to start collecting them. Thanks!

DCA I have a KniFAQ question for you. I'm looking for a good kukri. I want one that is somewhat traditional looking, but with modern looks, ergonomics and materials. Nothing tacticool or zombie killer-esque, no blade coatings etc but also don't want the cheap as dirt with notchy wood handles and garbage scabbard options either. Want one in the ~11-12" range. Not overly concerned with the price, but you can do budget and premiere options if you like. It has to be something you'd be comfortable thrashing, as I like to take as many knives when I go camping and pretend like I know what I'm doing with them to justify my collection.

Hey DCA, hope you and all the folks at Kinfecenter are doing well. Lately I've been carrying a rotation of a few moderately priced fixed blades as my edc(rotating between the Buck 119, Civivi Elementum fixed blade[g10 variant], and the Buck 113). I've been really liking the usefulness of them and they serve my needs quite well day to day. However my major complaint is they all ride a bit too high on my belt for my liking, so I've been running them hooked to a carabiner that is looped through the belt loop. While that drops them down where they are more comfortable, it looks pretty jank. So, my question is; Are there any good options for after market leather danglers you can add to leather sheaths? Thanks for your time if you answer this, all the best.

I will probably end up getting one for her, but wanted to see what other options were out there. requirements: flipper tab (can have other opening mechanisms too), 2.5-3in blade, liner lock, and ideally purple or lavender g10 scales, or natural g10 so I can dye them purple/lavender. is there a better knife than the elementum with these requirements? thanks a million!

Is the Kershaw Link still the cheapest way to get into the mid/upper tier powdered metal blades for US made ala 20cv? What brand/model would you consider least expensive overall "including US made and import" in obtaining a PM blade?

Check out the Barra by Rosecraft Blades. A new company launched recently at blade show. I think they have nice budget models.

    DCA, Thomas & Seth,
Looking for a tall, slim boot knife for police motorcycle boots. Its gotta be able to cut, pry and puncture; but mainly cut. These are over-the-calf boots that don’t leave much room for anything too girthy. Budget: under $500. Thanks and stay sharp.

Hi DCA! It is said that beauty is in the eye of the beholder. That being said what in your opinion are some of the more ugly knives that have some unexplainable charm to them? My pick is my Spyderco Yojimbo 2.

Im looking for a knife that is good for middle finger flipping and front flipping. Preferably the blade hole would be large and front flipper tall. Any lock type, but if it has a liner/frame lock, it also needs to have a rear flipper (to prevent closing on fingers when disengaging). Besides the cormorant and upcoming eutektik trinity, do any knives like this even exist? Thanks.

I'd like to ask a question about edge retention, I recently bought a razor tec 5" from cold steel and have been using it for many bushcraft and outdoors tasks but I notice the edge retention is rather low on the 4116 stainless steel ( not to say anything bad about the knife just curious and needed an example ) so I would like to know what defines a steels qualities namely edge retention. Thank you.

Hey david, since i noticed that sometimes you get video ideas from comments, I was wondering if you ever thought of making a "best/most iconic knife from every country" video, kinda similar to the best knife from every brand, i really like that format

Hey DCA, I'm looking for a knife to carry at my wedding in October. I'm having trouble narrowing it down. I am looking for something classy that will hide easily in a suit pocket (nothing large), preferably blue, but nice pakkawood could look nice with the blue suit. The budget is $100 to $200. A blue handled Ultratech caught my eye, but it's a little out of the budget and I prefer a folder. Any suggestions?

It's a small neck knife with a bottle opener integrated into the blade. 😅

Hello DCA and Thomas. I recently bought a Civivi Badlands Vagabond on your recommendation, and its fantastic. You always mention that bearings in the pivot need to be kept clean. What is a good method to use? I don't have tools to take the knife apart, would canned compressed air be a good option?

Take the plunge. Boker has a set of Wiha torx. Less than $20. You may need a heart gun or boiling water for screws with loctite. I got my set here.

Hey David, I’ve got one for ya. We spit roast whole lambs a few times each year and I’m looking for a knife that I can use to both chop through some bone and slice a bit until it’s totally deboned and I switch to my butcher knife. Basically I’d like a steel that won’t chip or dull much after chopping. I’ve been using a 6” cleaver sharpened to 25° but I’d like something a little more precise…thinner and not as stout. I’ve been eyeing shorter kukris… looking for suggestions under $200, kukri or not. Stainless would be nice. Thanks!
