    The opening sequence all done using silhouetted figures which, I would imagine, saved a SHITLOAD of animation time.

      I dont even think they animated this sequence, its just silhouetted live action. The rest of the film being rotoscoped, was probably very taxing on the animators since they had to make sure the lines didnt boil from frame to frame

    • @psyberplaylist4688

      Rotoscoped was way better then the other animated versions I think.
      The did some rotoscoped work in Heavy Metal as well, I love that type of animation fusion.

    Peter Jackson said in an interview this movie was his first exposure to Lord of the Rings. And of course the scene where the ringwraiths break into the prancing pony and attack the Hobbits... only to find out they got away was also taken from this version.
    For better or worse, this version did have at least some effect on how the trilogy was made.

    I think it was artistic for Peter Jackson to leave out Smeagol killing Deagol until the final film because we're supposed to think he's redeamable in Two Towers when really he isn't, so in Return of the King it works better to how us it then.

    • @SolusBatty
      @SolusBatty 8 ปีที่แล้ว +89

      +Snag Prophet You are right, and yet he was redeemable, the scene "go away and never come back" trumps his distant past, as Smeagol saw in Frodo a chance to be free of Golum. Unfortunately it was a fragile state of mind and Frodo's benevolant lies were the end of it.

    • @Snagprophet
      @Snagprophet 8 ปีที่แล้ว +24

      UchihaDualStorm It's kind of like having a really nice character and then you learn their backstory where they've murdered someone, it would ruin it if you knew their past before the reveal (although it's not really revealed to Frodo but it is to the audience).
      "and yet he was redeemable"
      He was, but I think in films a character becomes irredeemable if they do certain things within the context of the text. For instance, Darth Vader doesn't kill anyone in Return of the Jedi prior to the climax so we're supposed to warm to him, as we are to feel sorry for Smeagol in The Two Towers, however they show us in Return of the King that he killed someone and it sets the tone for the character as well as the darker theme for the film. We aren't supposed to like Gollum in Return of the King. If we were and if Gollum happened to be redeamed they would've done it the other way round, show him murdering someone for the ring in Two Towers then in Return of the King, show a flashback of him being really kind to someone which would then set the tone for the character being a good guy and would make us like him.

    • @SolusBatty
      @SolusBatty 8 ปีที่แล้ว +24

      ***** Im just back from a LotR marathon. I'll keep this short. You are correct about the presentation through the trilogy, however i was speaking from a perspective of someone who has seen the movies many times, not for the first. And i still find the Faramir Forbiden Pool scene heart wrenching, as i do believe him reedemable up till that point. To be eligible(!) for redemption you must first, for example, murder, so i dont think that makes him irredeemable.

      Brilliant concept, tricky to pull off right...and they totally failed harder than is easy to do. Like, when the 3 elf kings hold the rings up, they aren't even acting. It's not three lords majestically raising their hands, it's just three dudes handed some props and told "hey hold this in the air when I shout now"
      You could have invented a great animation assistance technique, if the first effort wasn't a legendary failure

    • @tense99
      @tense99 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      This does the first few chapters better than Jackson's film. Although it's very annotated, it captures the feeling much better. Frodos fireside chat with Gandalf from Shadows of the Past and the start of Frodos journey etc. Jackson's version of the first few chapters were a mixed bag. The rider being distracted by a bag of mushrooms so they could have a chase scene..ludicrous and it destroyed the pacing that Tolkien intended for that part of the story .

    As someone who watched Peter Jackson's films, I've got to say this looks awesome. Doesn't that intro make you think this is a world you want to spend some time in? To learn about? The introduction of the Nazgul alone is exciting.
    I think part of what I like about these old films is that there's less mucking around with dramatic pauses and slow mo effects. It gets straight to the point; things like combat or conversation is direct and to the point, and feels authentic for it. That's not to say I don't like a good superhero smack down now and then, but these old films also have something to them which I feel is lost in later movies.

      There don't seem to be comments complaining about it :)

Such as John Hurt as Aragorn, William Squire as Gandalf and having a stronger Frodo as well as Leonard Rosenman's score. I find the animation very dated and overall Bakshi's version of Middle-earth I find to be visually unappealing. Maybe if given a better budget he could have done more but alas.

    Bakshi's influence on Peter Jackson's version, especially in the beginning tableaus cannot be denied.
    Jackson even says in an interview that the first time he read The Lord of the Rings it was the paperback with Bakshi's Dark Riders from the movie, which is the very one I read for my first time.
    After the Prancing Pony, the movie runs out of money, and it shows, and is unwatchable.

      I think this film would have suffered less if it was just Fellowship, that part of the film is like 1 hour and 25 minutes long, already the length of an average animated film, fill the blanks like the shire or the journey to Lorien and you've a really good film based off Fellowship

    This in my opinion is one of the places where where Peter Jackson went wrong.
    In Jackson's LOTR they show sauron as a giant spiky suit of armor, there's no mystique or brooding intimidation. He just looks like the cover to Sabaton's Attero Dominatus.
    While here he's shrouded in darkness and all you can see is the power he wields through influencing others to kill.

It also has Sauron turning the nine kings of men into his Black Riders after he lost the One Ring rather than before. So no, this is not accurate to the lore. Amazon is actually probably going to be more accurate in this regard.

    While the intro here I would say is a bit more mysterious than Jackson’s, the unfortunately low budget and effects prevent me from actually taking the scene seriously. With Jackson you feel the scope and seriousness of everything happening, the grand armies, the life or death conflict, the horrible monsters and Sauron’s dominating presence all help to give the viewer the scope of the series epic ness as well as the threat Sauron poses and it feels as real as a movie can be. While it isn’t their fault their budget was so low when I watch this I just see people standing around in costumes and it doesn’t feel as real. Along with that, the dialogue for the intro doesn’t feel as well written or performed as well as Galadriel’s intro voice over to Jackson’s version of the film

    • @Godunow100
      @Godunow100 7 ปีที่แล้ว +88

      Their main purpose was to stop the flow of time and preserve things as they are. That's why Sauron (who at this time could assume beautiful physical form) convinced Elves to forge them with his help - as immortal beings they wanted their realms in Middle Earth to remain unchanged.
      Of course the rings from the start were part of Sauron plan to dominate Elves - after forging the One Ring he could control lesser rings and those who used them.

    • @Willickers
      @Willickers 7 ปีที่แล้ว +52

      The rings give their wielders power to achieve greatness, but also bend the wills of the non-elves to lust and greed. The elves who control the rings create realms of peace and beauty. Gandalf (who has an elf ring) can influence others to an uncanny degree. The dwarves with rings create untold wealth and skill but become reclusive misers. Humans carve out vast empires but become horrific warlords in the process. Elves and dwarves can sense the side effects and temper their use of the rings, but humans use the rings at every opportunity until they are completely dominated by Sauron.

    • @carnsolus
      @carnsolus 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      the rings would probably mess a non-immortal up regardless but the main negative effects the nine and the seven have were put there by sauron
      the three dont have negatives (aside from being controlled by the master ring) as sauron never possessed them

Doing the opening with shadows is the perfect setup, because LOTR does take place in a pre-modern world, a world where most things are dark and unknown. I've never heard of any "hipsters" hyping this animated version, but I know that there are some die-hard purists who defend the animated and live-action versions. The fact is, Bakshi did the best that he could at the time and with a pitiful budget. The live-action movies did the same, but with a bigger budget, director and scope. Both are great in their own right and for the time in which they were created. You can even credit the Rankin-Bass animated versions of "The Hobbit" and "The Return of the King" for book-ending the animated "Lord of the Rings" (because if you watch them all together, they do tell the basic story). As a kid growing up in the 70's and 80's, this is all we had outside of the books. And I'm thankful that it was made to generate my interest in Tolkien at an early age. Nowadays, young viewers are jaded and spoiled and THEY DON'T HAVE ONE CLUE what the world was like before the Internet and movie availability. They have access to everything. Back in the day, it was a damn privilege to see anything repeated on TV or to have access to a movie once it was out of theaters. These movies, whether live or animated, brought the world of Tolkien to life and for that, I'm grateful. But if anything, the Tolkien stories need to be told in a format like a long mini-series or a TV series. Only then will the purists be satisfied that everything can be included from the books.
