    i like that the orcs are scared by his battle cry. one thing i think the movies got wrong was that the regular orcs are far too brave and like... chaotic evil. they're supposed to be weak and twisted creatures that are cowardly but instead they have that "i'm evil and therefore dont give a shit about my own life or safety" thing that breaks immersion just a little.
    in the books, these men are described in a way that gives them a kind of low-magic quality. they are "mighty" and its not because they're super strong it's because of their will and their bearing. the orcs cannot easily withstand it because they are dark and mutilated beings. it's all about soul in Tolkien, rather than the material.

    What I like about this scene is how raw, ruthless and merciless it is. In the Jackson's movies, Boromir's death was depicted as the glorious last stand of a great warrior, while in Bakshi's it is presented as an execution in all its cruelty, a true punishment for his greed. You can see the despair permeate the whole sequence and how much it leaves you feeling cold and helpless at the end. No tragic or sad music to sell you the scene, the images speak for themselves and the silence enhance the feeling of unease and dread. As for the orcs, their vileness, savagery and cowardice are in full display here.

      @publiusthefederalist6843 ปีที่แล้ว +40

      The only thing is in the books it’s less of a punishment and more of a redemption, he basically throws his whole house, one of the most prestigious and ancient of all of Gondor, away to die for his hobbit friends, he can’t do anything for Frodo but he makes sure to help his friends. The theme of the book is choices, Boromir could have chosen to hide because “I’m too important to die for some hobbits” but ultimately chooses to do the right thing and abandoned the idea of “evil for good reasons “ (which is what he wanted the ring for)

      Jackson’s version hits to the heart of Tolkien, and is more true to the text. He failed his test, and succumbed to the ring but he died seeking redemption. And while he may have held reservations regarding the kingship of Aragorn, he also repented of that fault too. Jackson’s scene encompasses the redemption that comes with repentance after folly

      I was born in '02 and I think this is awesome.
      It may be because I was born in a communist country and america's 70s/80s hit us only in the later 90s, which ment that stuff like this, riding a harley with a leather jacket and black t-shirts with the moon and wolves was still considered cool, hip and trendy.
      Because of that I look at this and feel a sense of familiarity and nostalgia despite never seeing this movie or "heavy metal" before.
      The style of the movie also feels very unique and different which makes it far more enjoyable than Inception or fast and furious or whatever is cool now.
      Not to say that stuff that comes out today is bad, the revenant, John Wick, a star is born and alpha were great movies.
      It's just that you don't see stuff like this anymore, which is a shame I think.

    • @ULYSSES-31
      @ULYSSES-31 10 ปีที่แล้ว +113

      I wasn't talking about the actor; I was talking about the director: Jackson used far too much slow-mo to add drama to scenes that are all ready dramatic.
      Normal speed brings us closer to the actor's performance and what is happening to them in the moment whereas slow-mo feels more like a study in motion because it feels distant and un-natural.
      Ironically, the Boromir's death in the cartoon feels more 'real'.

    • @Whoa802
      @Whoa802 10 ปีที่แล้ว +165

      THOMAS CARNACKI Well, after he fell down, there wasn't any slow-motion used for his last words with Aragorn, so we do get to witness Bean's performance in a natural way. This death just felt completely flat and emotionless for me. Not only because of how little time we get to know the guy, but like a lot of the film, the lack of music and overall quietness just makes for a really dull film on an emotional level.

    • @ULYSSES-31
      @ULYSSES-31 10 ปีที่แล้ว +22

      alan smithee The wall-to-wall music overpowered the 'natural' emotion in Jackson's film. If a film needs to add constant music for emotion, it's lacking dramatically.

    • @Whoa802
      @Whoa802 10 ปีที่แล้ว +95

      THOMAS CARNACKI Well, how many great dramatic scenes can you think of that didn't have a dramatic score to go with it? While I do agree that a film shouldn't rely on constant sappy music for emotion, sometimes, you really do need a score to help punctuate the emotion of the scene. Imagine the ending of E.T. without Williams'amazing score, for example.

    The 3 things I like about how this scene depicts Boromir's death are how his battlecry scares the orcs back despite him being mortally wounded, as well as how he cries out for his brother as he collapses.
    The third is how Aragorn looks up and turns when he realizes Boromir is gone, the expression displays a feeling of helplesness at the death of his comrade and the current circumstance. I think all three of these elements contribute to the dramatic effect of the loss of one of the fellowship in a way that gives this depiction its own merit when compared to the Peter Jackson depiction.

    This is so great. There's so much atmosphere and energy in the moody backgrounds and rotoscoping, and it's such a weird, provocatively slanted take on the character designs. Comparisons to Peter Jackson's films seem misguided and unfair. This is an experimental, comparatively low budget, clearly quite personal interpretation of the source material. It's ok not to be into that type of film, but pointless to compare it to a mega blockbuster. The films have different intentions and are interesting/enjoyable for different reasons.

Also how he was holding on to the hobbits like a parent protecting their child. Others in the comments seem to say the same of how this makes him even more redeemable as a character in the end. I'm glad in the new movie they showed the hobbits putting up more of a fight. In this it makes me angry at how fragile and meek they are. They still get grabbed like children in Peter Jackson's movie but at least they gave their actual best effort when they tried to fight back. This 1978 scene makes me want to beat them up too. Lol. Seriously though Boromir did ALL that and you just let the orc hit you and crumble like a snowflake.

    Jokes aside, I like this scene as much, perhaps even more than in the Jackson film. Boromir looks more desperate, more enraged at his enemies, and the SILENCE as the orcs slowly kill him makes the scene more realistic, harsher and overall more dramatic than with a soundtrack. Boromir is the most misunderstood character in the whole Tolkien mythos IMO. This guy was already living the impact of Sauron's return, way before the others. He was constantly haunted by the fact that he left his friends and family behind at Minas Tirith and Osgiliath. They were fighting for their lives and defending their land while he was on a quest with just a handful of people he didn't know, and the fact that he grew up surrounded by an army probably made him think that this quest led by such a small group was bound for failure. He was a soldier, used to fighting on the front. This quest just wasn't made for him.

    • @royhenry3692
      @royhenry3692 3 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      I think that’s sadly kind of the point. Faramir should have been on the quest and boromir stayed behind. But that’s not how things always work out in real life.

    • @aliebrubaker7473
      @aliebrubaker7473 3 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      The 2001 movie, especially the theatrical release, made Boromir look like a way bigger dick than he was in the books. The extended editions did a much better job making it clear that Boromir was very much a hero who felt ultimately insurmountable pressure to save his kingdom and that pressure is what drove him to betray Frodo.
      I disagree that this depiction is better than the Peter Jackson version, though it and many other scenes from the 1978 animated film clearly inspired this scene and some of the best scenes in the 2000s films.

    • @dannyflynn5681
      @dannyflynn5681 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Boromir only succumbs to the ring out of fear for the fellowship, he only wants to protect them all, especially Frodo and the Hobbits, and it's that vulnerability that the ring pounces on and drives it's wedge - in the book it's as if he understands that Gondor can't use the ring against Sauron, but going to Minas Tirith is the only viable way to save all the remaining members of the fellowship after Gandalf departs. His plan to go to Minas Tirith sounds completely reasonable, and even if Frodo did go alone and the rest of the Fellowship went on without any trouble from the orcs, he would have led them all to Minas Tirith and done his best to protect them, and help Frodo by resisting Mordor. Boromir was the most human, friendly and understanding character, he just succumbed to a weakness that wasn't even really a weakness, it was a cruel twist of fate which shows the true evil power of the ring. That's how I read it anyway bro. He was suited for the quest and was a great guardian of the Hobbits but it was his paternal instincts which cost him.

    • @TheFlamingPike
      @TheFlamingPike 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@dannyflynn5681 Yes, that's a very good analysis. Plus the fact that the rings - and especially the One Ring - had a quicker effect on men! Boromir was doomed right at the beginning lol.

    • @dannyflynn5681
      @dannyflynn5681 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@TheFlamingPike Yes, and I always feel its worth noting that Boromir isn't tempted until after he says that Frodo shouldn't suffer needlessly, unlike the movie he never really shows any real temptation up until that point (? I could be wrong) or any real sign that he wants to steal the ring for himself (unlike the movie where its heavily foreshadowed, and outright spoken by Galadriel) - I think the film did his character dirty, that is not a new thought by any means, but his character had alot more tragic depth that wasn't quite conveyed by its filmmaking, his character was more of a long plot device set up to show the audience clearly that Frodo needed to go alone in his quest, rather than the paternal, thoughtful and intelligent figure he really was. When you think about it, his plan of what to do with the ring was justified and from a position of first hand knowledge, experience and wisdom, especially when Gandalf or Aragorn at that stage really had no plan other than to wander out of sight and figure something out, Boromirs plan of striking out and resisting Mordor from a position of power was what the Fellowship without Frodo ultimately did.

      That's because the budget ran out and they had to approach a bonding company for the film to be completed. They were provided with the minimum. • @InfernoMutant

      i wouldn't call the differences minor. You felt the weight of Boromir's life, his struggle to keep the Hobbit's safe, and his pride in staying alive long enough to tell Aragorn he struggled to take the ring and wanted Aragorn to live on to protect their people. Sean Bean did a stellar performance in conveying regret, pride and fear all in one subtle moment while dying. This scene is just... silly. Arrows are shot, Boromir says a few things, does the 'agh, gah ach' sound a few times and dies. There's really no gravity, or love, in the performance. Viggo Mortensen as well delivers a level of love to Boromir, a fellow fallen soldier and man, you just dont see that here.

    • @BrettWMcCoy
      @BrettWMcCoy 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3
