FILTHY Engine Bay Detail on a 200k Mile Honda Civic | Start to Finish

  • My $900 Honda Civic Project continues with a MUCH needed engine bay detail! This may be the first engine detail in over 20 years on this vehicle. So join me as we remove mud, grease, and years of filth off this engine!
    Rarely will I have to super clean an engine bay and give it the ol razzle dazzle. This $900 Honda Civic D16Y8 was beyond a normal wipedown but needed a full degreasing and contamination removal. While this isn't a full blown how-to, I figured many other Honda Civic owners may be in the same boat on how to clean a engine bay. NOTE* Before pressure washing an engine bay, PLEASE do some research on the vehicle to see what sensitive areas need to be masked off. For me, Honda's need the Distributor masked off. Then obviously knowing what other areas should avoid significant amounts of water.
    Super Clean, or Purple Power would have been suitable for this job (and I don't say that often). Fortunately, I had some other chemicals at my disposal along with brushes to make this process a bit more effective. I used a wheel cleaner with a built in fallout remover to break down any surface ruse and eliminate iron deposits in the engine bay. From there, a alkaline based all purpose cleaner to remove the stubborn grease. The key is to let things soak without letting them dry. Rinse often, scrub often, and repeat.
    Now that this Honda Civic engine has been restored, it'll make things much easier to work on. And all I have to do is maintain this clean state to keep it looking this way! Hope this video was entertaining!
    Here's some stuff I used in this video!
    Magic Wheel Cleaner: amzn.to/3rKikQa
    Green Star All Purpose Cleaner: amzn.to/3lgp5Ik
    Motorplast Engine Protectant: amzn.to/3ljkmpb
    Super Clean: amzn.to/3fmsAZV
    EZ Clean Brush: amzn.to/3fh4ujq
    Detail Factory Brush: amzn.to/3rN3o3Q
    Nylon Brush: amzn.to/3AcERbB
    Wipedown Towels: amzn.to/3zYEj8Z
    Soft Grip Brush: theragcompany.com/products/so...
    Thanks for watching!

    Anyone else felt satisfied when the nylon brush fitted perfectly inbetween the valve cover and the pulley part?
    Great video man. Greetings all the way from the Nürburgring.

    Did this not too long ago and my gas pedal started sticking. Consensus from some forums was that the water pressure might have pushed dirt and debris into the rotating mechanism of the throttle body (TB). Prior to me owning my car, an old lady owned the car for 24 years and had never cleaned the engine bay so it was pretty filthy. Some TB cleaner at your local auto parts store will fix it right up if this ever happens to you haha.

    • @troyl5929
      @troyl5929 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      TB cleaner, brake cleaner, or simply soapy water on your throttle cable and spring. Soak it good and maybe use a brush if you can fit it on the cable and spring, make sure to clean the cable and activate the throttle and clean between the pulley. Then any multipurpose grease/gun cleaner/oil works on the spring and wire/pulley. No WD40 though.

      Ima have to try this my throttle body sticks when it’s parked over night and I have to put my foot down a bit to get it to go

    • @kainestefaniak2751
      @kainestefaniak2751 ปีที่แล้ว

      Same happened to me i had to keep clutching in and kicking my pedal
      I used some lube cant remember if it was silicone based or what on the throttle cable and some light oil on the return sprung and throttle shaft
      Use a motorbike cable lube tool and spray from the top down it should fill the cable in 5 seconds without a air leak then go in the cabin and wipe the excess overnight.. my clean up was next to nothing

    The engine came out pretty clean. I would detail and clean my 2003 honda civic engine every few months. It may not be the coolest looking engine but it felt good to have a pretty clean engine all the time. Keep up the videos, always waiting and excited to watch.

    Have now used this to clean house siding and it performed well th-cam.com/users/postUgkx43QMbQqu67IZadu9ou8Sg1BdrunMRNqX I also bought some wand extensions which enabled higher washing without needing a ladder. I recommend both. This unit arrived quickly, was easy to assemble (only had to attach the handle), and arrived in perfect condition. The only very slight downgrade from a perfect score is the design has a low handle and requires pulling from the side. My old washer was an upright model, while this one is more horizontal. Other than that, it's perfect for my needs. It has a great deal of pressure and more easily cleaned the house siding, porch rails and concrete than did my older model. The engine is a bit louder, as well, but the total time to clean was reduced by the more powerful spray. Did I mention it starts on the first or second pull every time?!! I am definitely happy with this model.

      Why? Water isn't as good of a conductor as the layman thinks. It's actually quite poor. You need electrolytes like salt or baking soda to make it conductive. You can soak that battery all you want, you're fine. Just don't soak electronics.

    After I clean my engine in a similar way and let dry completely . I spray 303 Protectant liberally all over the engine compartment . Specifically to resist plastic and rubber parts / components from drying out and cracking . It dries without any issue at all , though it willl attract surface dirt . Which after around 6 months ? I will do the same again . Of course making sure I do this if possible in the summer months at least for one application . I stuff 1-2 microfiber towels into the air intake to prevent water from getting it .

    That distributor looks really easily accessed. Might be better just to clean it, and dry it afterwards on an engine this dirty. That's what I did on my Volvo. Also, I've found that plug wells often collect water, so pulling the plug wires from the start isn't a bad idea. Then dry them out with a shop vac, and compressed air after cleaning. I wasn't clear on why a wheel cleaner was used. I'd choose a degreaser.

    • @100GTAGUY
      @100GTAGUY ปีที่แล้ว +1

      He stated once or twice at the beginning he used wheel cleaner because it's got some iron/rust inhibitors (fine rotor dust gets everywhere and then oxidizes, and contributes futher to dissimilar metal corrosion), and works well for cleaning grease and grime which while not as oily as an engine brakes tend to get pretty gunky. Being a wheel cleaner it's most likely formulated to not damage or etch various kinds of bare metal from steel to aluminum as well.
      I personally just spray everything down with klean strip paint thinner made from mineral spirits, and or purple power/simple green for less soiled cleaning projects. I got a siphon wand for my compressor, and I'll just give the engine a light spray and let it soak. Then scrub it all with a few nylon brushes by hand or stuck in the cordless drill chuck. Give it one light spray to get the gunk flowing off, another quick scrub with the brushes (after giving them a quick cleaning with compressed air) and then just blow all the dirt, oil, and sludge off with compressed air and it's Gucci (may require one extra rinse, and blow dry) Granted on a really dirty engine bay, you may need to do it once more from the beginning. I've cleaned nearly 1500 engines this way and never had a problem with it damaging paint, electronics, plastics, rubbers, epoxy resins, or coil windings in alternators or stators. It's just damn messy and a pain to deal with if you don't have a containment/runoff treatment system, which we had at the old shop but I don't have at home currently. Another plus is that any residue from them will evaporate off shortly and you don't have to worry about it shorting anything out.

    Good for YOU! Nicely done! Ppl think it's wrong to WASH engine bays, I do NOT. I feel greasy/dirty engines are like "frying an egg". When they are "clean" they breathe easier/cool quicker/stay cooler. PLUS, nicer to work on. I use Simple Green on stubborn dirt, but hose my engine bays several times a year at self serve car washes but dont push trigger & that spray is adequate to clean off dust. Yours looks SO much better! 👍

    Some steps I do, mostly to make certain that engine WILL restart: 1. Cover the alternator w plastic. 2) Cover the air inlet with plastic! 3. Then either clean the alt carefully by hand or jsut leave it dirty - is a broken alternator worth it to get the engine completely clean?!

    What if I don't have a pressure washer, my only option is to take my 03 civic to a self car wash that has those high pressure sprays, would I damage anything if I washed the engine while it's hot?

    Highly recommend Aerotech 303 for your interior. Its amazing product, and doesn't put down that oily, messy glair that Amour-all does. Nice job, great video, enjoyed watching you. And congrats on a good looking engine bay. Super nice job!!

    • @hartlanddetailer5670
      @hartlanddetailer5670 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Unfortunately, 303 has skyrocketed to over $60.00 per gallon They have out priced their product!

    • @100GTAGUY
      @100GTAGUY ปีที่แล้ว

      @@hartlanddetailer5670 look for the msds and chemical makeup of the 303 and find the non aviation marketed equivalent. That's part of the reason it's so damn pricey, once something is made for aircraft that's an instant tenfold markup on price.
      Meguires makes some fantastic products though, and you get what you pay for.

      I use 303 automotive (same product, costs about half the price because it's not 'aviation') diluted about 2:1 (2 parts 303 1 part water), slightly diluted for engine bays because if it's not diluted it does leave a tiny film that will catch dust in an engine bay that moves air, but when diluted it still leaves behind protection and visual pop, and also extends out your product just a bit more.

    Pro tip remove your battery before you clean your bay to protect your electronics. this also give you a chance to clean your battery tray and battery terminals.

    • @ALLDAYANTHONY
      @ALLDAYANTHONY  2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Makes no difference in removing it other than giving the tray a clean. “Modern cars” can take it

    Anthony my 2000 civic si has the same metal radiator, and ive never seen another honda with another metal radiator. Can you check your white cars production date? My theory is cars made after 7/00 had the metal radiator

    I don’t recommend spraying degreaser on the whole engine bay. That can dry out hoses and plastics.
