Don't be too hard on yourself Mitch, you may not have gotten the exact level of cleanliness you wanted on the engine but it still looks 100% better than when you first opened it. The owner should be amazed at how you got this filthy mess when it arrived to the beautiful masterpiece it is when he picked it up. Excellent work as always!!!!!

I think you did a fantastic job on that engine bay. 14 years of crud and grease did not come off easy. The amount of cleaner used was a lot, but it did the job. Using the right tools and the right chemicals sure makes a difference. The fact that you repeated your process a couple of times is a testament to your dedication to your skill and talent. That was fun to watch. The leaf blower is such a smart way to get all that water away quickly. Thanks for making this for us Mitch. I just changed out by brake light which is why I was late to this party. Have a great weekend Mitch!!!!

Absolutely love engine bay cleaning! One question: wouldn't be better/safer to take the battery entirely out to clean it's bay and the battery itself better?
Also, I wouldn't mind to have an engine a little bit dirtier, after all it's not a brand new car... for mechanical purposes, clean the engine bay would help find oil leaks, so focus on the block, heads and gaskets is already super helpful!

I been detailing cars for a Chevy dealership for over 20 years! When i detail an engine bay, cool engine i soak everything down with a degreaser, pretty much mean green if you want to get into the ingredients lol, soak it down and let it stand a few min, then powerwash it good, steadily rinsing the fenders when needed, after the hot water powerwash,i use compressed air to blow off any water pools, start the motor and close the hood, let it run till its built plenty of heat, then while its running powerwash again, alot of block grease will come off easier when its hot, then again with compressed air and your all good,no conditioner or anything on the plastics, all it does is collect dirt and cooks the plastics!!

Disconnecting the battery: if you start by disconnecting the positive terminal, and your wrench contacts bodywork or the engine while you're doing it, you'll get current flow, sparks etc. If you've already disconnected the earth terminal, this won't happen. Also won't happen when you disconnect the earth terminal, for obvious reasons.

Depends on the ambient temperature, in summer it can be pretty quick (5-10mins). In winter it could be hours.. your better off applying it less at a time, rinsing off then reapplying 2nd/3rd time rather than trying to hit it all in one go.

I was always hesitant to wet a motor, whether via a “chassis bath” at a car wash, or cleaning it like this when very hot, with the fear of causing metal warping or cracks (exhaust manifold) due to putting cold water on a piping hot motor or arcing my ECU and shorting it out.

It's weird to me to see water spraying into an engine bay as for some reason I think it would harm the engine. That being said, I don't know anything about detailing cars. Do you have a list of preferred tools and cleaning agents? I just got a new to new car and I'd like to keep it cleaner than I have my previous vehicles.

The reason you disconnect the negative is if you screw up and hit the cars body with your spanner when removing the bolt nothing happens. If you do the positive first before removing the negative and you hit the cars body with the spanner you get an instant heater in your hand, and possible a wash in acid from the battery as it explodes.

Just a general question.....What are the benefits of cleaning an engine bay if it's always enclosed? My 2016 Corolla does not have any oil or fluid leaks, and is not too dirty. I also worry about water getting into the alternator and electronics. Thanks.

Routinely cleaning the engine bay can help reduce engine temperature slightly but mostly because when you take it to the shop you can potentially save money if the mechanic doesn’t have to get filthy.

Long time watching first time commenting. Two little things (detail I guess, lol) 1. Since you removed the battery cables, why not yank out the thing. Reason this is the first place corrosion goes. Rinse it out and while still wet apply some baking soda to neutralize the acid. 2 when you disconnect the battery do you plug in an an odb reader or device that will record all the radio stations seat positions and other setables that won’t be saved . This is not a detail this is a needed step. We spend every week watching tor TH-cam’s keep up the good work.

I wash the engine bay first, spray 303 or CG VRP and close the hood. Wash the whole car as I always do, just before I'm done I check everything is ok under the hood and if needed I touch up here and there 😉

I dont understand the battery disconnecting thing.
Imagine youre holding a small battery, like the ones you use on a remote. you dunk it in water. Do you actually think it will electrify?
    Thats the same exact thing
