I recently did this, only used "tire foam" and follow recommended procedure from one of these podcasts on a newly acquired 2000 Buick Lesabre because it came from not so desirable winter climate. Well it didn't get all the grease off but there was 21 years of crap on the engine. The engine did run a little rough because the blower I had was from a canister vacuum cleaner and am sure some water must have gotten somewhere it shouldn't. Are overhauling my new acquisition and replaced a battery, the driving lights module, cruise control and trying to fix a few rust problems. Trying to decided what to do about scratches and paint. That auto body class I took at 35 will come in handy. Got a '41 Chevy at 15 and cars were easier to work on in 1955. Worked on all my cars and loved doing it. Now I'm having a second childhood working on cars again. Solo much fun!
I personally use the O'Reilly on my silverado about twice a year scrubbing most areas and use a garden hose to rinse. I have no complaints. Use 2 cans each cleaning, not scrubbing first round use the whole can, second round scrubbing using whole can. It is a great cheap product
What's the entire process that you do, do you remove certain parts like the battery? Do you avoid spraying certain parts like the ignition coils? Also, do you check all cords to see if any are loose?
I hope your truck started and ran smoothly after that pressure spray. Many vehicles could not take that much pressure spray to the electrical components and air intakes

@Half & Half vehicles are different since I owned detail shops, perhaps. We had to cover ma by parts and even had to keep the car running or else we were in trouble. You whipper snaps and your fancy water proof engine compartment.
I agree, I had the problem years ago and mechanic said NEVER use pressure washers on engines. I have success with a mist spray setting on my garden hose and I cover electrical areas.
Just remember, degreasers have to sit to break down the grease then it rinses off much easier. Letting it sit for a minute or two is not long enough for it to do anything useful.

Great tutorial but I would recommend a couple of things. First to disconnect the battery terminals, spray off the engine with water then spray the degreaser, let it sit for at least 5 minutes then using a brush to get deep down then rinsing it really thoroughly. You may need to spray the degreaser multiple times to get a better clean. Do this during the hot summer sunny day where you know it will dry off with in an hour or 2 before starting your vehicle and once done hosing off the engine bay really well, take a air gun and blow any remaining water in all circuits and wires and let your engine dry for at least 1 to 2 hours, reconnect your battery and simply start and let it run for 10 minutes to dry any remaining water that hasn't been dried yet.
I have used this product and the SuperTech and Gunk versions. I think they are all equally good. When I find them on sale I usually buy 4-5 cans to keep on hand. The best thing about foamy degreasers is that the will work on vertical and inverted (like if you got underneath and sprayed the side of the engine and oil pan). These degreasers are very good for the thicker oily grease you get on intake manifolds and front and side of valve covers too. For just dirt, dust and light grime, I would use something like Super Clean or Purple Power. I think they are less likely to harm your plastics and body paint if your rinsing is less than fully optimal. Basically I feel it's better to use the less stronger cleaners when they will work well and they are more cost effective. I don't use a torch when a lit match will do. I really like your Worx water spray gun though, didn't know they existed. Gunna look into that one.
Also I don't think you're supposed to use a power cleaner on a engine if he actually did what you did I think I was your clean most of it not the cleaner
I have an 03 v6 mustang and it's covered in like half an inch of gunk. I went through a whole can and it got a lot of it and made it easy to wipe up. good stuff. there's probably some better ones out there though
Over the years I've tried lots of de-greasers. Most don't work worth a damn. One day a friend turned me on to "Simple Green". I thought, yeah right, a biodegradable product is going to cut grease. It's the only thing I use now. Fantastic stuff !
I did this to my 5.3 ... turned out nice and clean And a month later I was in the shop having my Knox sensors changed. The water destroyed them .... from now on I will just wipe it down. No more pressure wash for me !
All of you saying the pressure washer would clean it without the degreaser are probably right but for one what he used i wouldnt consider a pressure washer and you wouldn't want to spray high pressure straight into the engine bay. The reason for decreaser is loosen up the grease and grime so you don't have to spray a ton of water in some of the more vulnerable areas. Good review if you understand what you're looking at. Funny people who probably never clean their own car are so quick to say they don't trust it. Scott not sure if you still make videos but I've watched a few of them and I appreciate the knowledge. Thanks for the demonstration. Now, to be fair to the O'Reilly product, you should do another cleaning where you actually follow the instructions of waiting 15 minutes and agitating to give a more thorough and complete review of that product. Otherwise, I'd suggest you don't give any grade because the full instructions weren't followed. It's like putting de-clogging liquid into your sink drain pipe and flushing it with cold water only after a few minutes (instead of 10 minutes and hot water) then commenting that the water is draining slowly because the clog hasn't cleared up.
Actually, he is going to let the water dry off first. That's what I would do which I have. Didn't need to cover anything. Just make sure all water has dried. Best to do the engine cleaning during a warm to hot day.
Have you tried dawn heavy duty degreaser for cleaning engines? I just spray it on from the pump spray bottle and lightly agitate with a chip brush. Even takes ground in dirt out of the under-hood paint wo staining it. Works on carpeting stains and rubber and vinyl too. No smell or fumes. Rinses clean.
I use engine cleaner after every oil change, gunk foamy and the O'Reilly's brand as well both work great and the engine bay on my Silverado looks new every time all the time
On paper, cars are designed to ensure no electrical connection or vacuum lines are exposed to weather. However I would avoid pressure washer at any given time. Specially if your car is old. Simple hose should do it...!
If using foam, recommend not to spray water which could damage wires and connections and leads to rust and corrosion even though isolate wires with this type of foam
The first time I tried this, many years ago. I went to car wash an used some kind of degreaser stuff. Any ways I spent about $5 to wash the trucks engine. It looked pretty clean, but it would Not start. I had soaked the distributor. Had to pull the cap off an dry it out. An after a few hours on a Hot summers day I got it to start. Sucks being broke down at the car wash.
That looked like 3 minutes working time, not 15 minutes. It's a good idea to let solvents work and loosen as much material as they can. A clean surface will shed product and suspended grime easier than a surface that still has a layer of grease. I've used many different engine cleaners and never needed to use more than low pressure hose end water for rinsing.

Free Just power wash and warm water is even better Just spray bad areas with apc and hit it again with washer. I then air dry the engine and spray a tire foam all over, let it sit then wipe Looks brand new. This usually takes me 15 mins. That motor was far from dirty imo Cheers all

Go to Oreilly's buy and use the degreaser, spray with water then short out eletric then go back to Oreilly's and buy whatever you shorted. That sounds great.
Scott... Like your videos, However this product is to harsh for the engine.. It stinks, Leaves oily puddles, and typically no good for electrical components as well. I ALWAYS use a bag to cover up the alternator. I personally use Tire FOAM. It CLEANS and PROTECTS. Engine looks fantastic 9 to 10 weeks down the road. I didn't have much faith in it till i tried it. YES it works. Just break down the dirt with a mild cleaner, then TIRE FOAM. Engine looks like it just left the factory. Id like to see you do a video on this as well.. Keep them video's coming. Your doing great work out there.
To quiet those bashing you Scott as quickly as practical after you've cleaned an engine like this start the engine---a lot of the bad mouthing probably comes from thinking cleaning like this can cause problems starting or running. I don't like using water under pressure as it can force itself into electrical connectors causing issues---city water pressure at a low flow used to flush away cleaners like this is more my speed. Good videos though---thanks for sharing your knowledge and never mind the keyboard warriors---or have them post their own videos! :)
I love their regular degreaser. My truck had an oil cooler line leak that I won't say how long I let it go. Do have a good reason though. But my truck was baaaaad underneath. Id just spray and let it work then come back with a heavy duty regular ol water bottle with a sprayer. Will do a stream or most and is pretty stout for a hand squeezer. Made my truck look almost new underneath
You have excellent hearing, @3:42 you can hear it penetrating the grease wow. It couldn't be just the bubbles foaming and popping. You can tell the difference between the grease bubbles and the other bubbles that's amazing.

you are right you want nothing entering the alternator,the charging system is the system on any car,i usually saran wrap my alternator when i clean under the hood,you must clean it or fall behind then it short circuits all kinds of stuff

I have never seen a "foamy" cleaner, degreaser, whatever" that actually worked unless you get in and scrub, this would be good for a quick 60% clean when you don't feel like going the extra mile. I am not a fan of spraying any cleaner, then blasting with water the engine compartment without covering all the electrical related items and spark plug wells, you never want water sitting in the there. Thanks for the information, I personally have never heard of or seen a O'reilly anything in my area.
Thanks for the video. I just used this product on my 2012 Pilot. It worked very well on the moderate areas like in the video. The heavier caked areas needed a second application after I let the bay dry thoroughly first. On an other note, is it me, or can this guy sit in for Howard Stern as a voice over so Howard could take a day off? Great job!
Hi Scott love your videos n honesty ,,,,,,pressure is great but the white nozzle will do better is 40 the yellow is 25 kind of strong never use the green or Red,,,,will be too much,,,,,,I cleaned engines in the 80 a 90 a for a car dealer that exports from Miami to the Caribbean n Customer s always like a clean engine it make more profit plus u sell more cars, Really all we use was Formula 88. And a regular water hose......we never have Engine Issues except the day I wash my wife s engine on an Oldsmobile cutlass I didn't start after so the mechanic dry the contact s inside distributor n WAM it start,,,,,,it also was the last time I wash her Engine🙄 u got my point. Newbie question: If you spray water into the engine compartment doesn't it risk damage something it there? I always want to keep the engine looking new but afraid if I wash it I'll damage something.
I use Turtle Wax tire cleaner foam. It will not hurt alternator. Let it sit for 10 minutes and break out the leaf blower etc. Wipe off excess. Done for 3.68 a can.
Buy a half gallon jug of dollar store degreaser. I buy it at the 99 cent store for $1.99. Put it in a dollar spray bottle. Liberally spray it on whatever you are cleaning. Let it sit on there for maybe 15 minutes or so. Don't let it dry. Repeat spray gunky grease then using a pressure tip on the garden hose or a pressure washer spray it off. Lightly greasy area's will be clean including some of the paint. Spray heavy grease again. Might take a few more times but it will come clean with this stuff. Be sure to not get any cleaners on your paint. It leaves no film. The dollar store stuff does remove paint as well. If the dollar store stuff is not available Walmart carries a gallon of a purple degreaser cleaner in their tool/pressure washer isle for $4.99. It does the same job as the dollar store cleaner.
I never tried to clean an engine in a car but when I want a real clean on my motorcycle I coat the motor real good with dawn dishwashing liquid [warm motor] nice and thick let it soak in for about 20 min then hose it down then take it out and blow dry it
do you find rinsing first than applying your degreaser can dilute the strength of the degreaser?...have you just sprayed your degreaser without rinsing first and see if the results are the same?..how dirty was the engine bay to begin with?...thanks Danel for viewing and for your support
Dallas Paint Correction & Auto Detailing well I did both and It look just the same as if I didn't soak the engine first but I feel like the degreaser works best if you get the engine bay wet/soak so it loosen the dirt and then put the degreaser after...plus the engine bay was really fill with dusty dirt all around.
Thanks for the video. Just a couple of quick comments: first, we tend to give more favorable reviews to an item or a service that was given as a compliment. Apparently, you have a friendly relationship with the associates at the auto parts store, and they gave you this product for free. We can't expect a truly objective rating. Second, unless you are using an "industrial-strength" degreaser, it would need more than 2 minutes to break down oil and grease. You should have allowed it to work longer. Lastly, never EVER use pressurized water to wash an engine. That's just asking for trouble.
Also disconnect the battery before spraying it with water, and let it dry or use a air compressor or leaf blower to dry afterwards and everything would be fine.
i know:)..but don't worry after cleaning engines for OVER 26 years, it wouldn't have helped to let it wait 15 minutes:)..but you should buy some and try it

The instructions said to wait 15 minutes. Plus the power washers alone did some serious work. Redo, let it sit, don't power wash, only spray on half the engine.
Was wondering since you never covered the alternator distributor or even that high pressure shooting at the engine the startup okay afterwards? Although I've done this many years ago in the past I'm not sure if I do it again today because it seems a little sketchy of entreated what's Kitty water everywhere and at that high-pressure just curious on how your vehicle worked afterwards thanks for the video
I’ve been told my whole life to careful when using water in an engine bay and not getting anything wet that doesn’t need to be trying to keep water out of connectors and stuff... this man just took a pressure washer to his trucks motor.
O'Reillys rules every time I go in there I have a great experience. I even had to call once to complain about what good service they have every time I go in there it's a positive friendly experience the other car parts supply guys can go ship in their hat

Don't follow this advice! You must cover the engine, and make sure your alternator is covered, thats the most important. You can go over the outside of the engine with just a hose spray nozzle. Clean the engine with degreaser and some cloths
I had my engine wash with high pressure it got water damage had to take to Lexus to fix the problem Lexus have told me never to do that again they charge me $1500 to fix the problem now my Mecanic clean oil leaks with brakes cleaners and it works 12 cans cost around $30
You got to love these comments about people worried about "pressure" washing the engine compartment. It's 2022, not 1968. Engine components are a tad more resistant to water egress. Also, his pressure washer has about 7 psi more than a good garden hose nozzle.
The turtle wax tire shine the green can is the best you don't even use water. Just brush and wip. Make sure the engine is warm first. When you spray it on let it sit for 10 minutes before wiping it off.

Good job on the video. I use the same thing. BUT when I'm done washing. I whip out my leaf blower and completely DRY the motor.

I just spray it on from the pump spray bottle and lightly agitate with a chip brush. Even takes ground in dirt out of the under-hood paint wo staining it. Works on carpeting stains and rubber and vinyl too.
No smell or fumes. Rinses clean.

I use engine cleaner after every oil change, gunk foamy and the O'Reilly's brand as well both work great and the engine bay on my Silverado looks new every time all the time
I was under the impression that you could damage some wires and connections when apply water on the engine.
On paper, cars are designed to ensure no electrical connection or vacuum lines are exposed to weather. However I would avoid pressure washer at any given time. Specially if your car is old. Simple hose should do it...!
If using foam, recommend not to spray water which could damage wires and connections and leads to rust and corrosion even though isolate wires with this type of foam

The first time I tried this, many years ago. I went to car wash an used some kind of degreaser stuff. Any ways I spent about $5 to wash the trucks engine. It looked pretty clean, but it would Not start. I had soaked the distributor. Had to pull the cap off an dry it out. An after a few hours on a Hot summers day I got it to start. Sucks being broke down at the car wash.
Same here, but after that I'd get backfires for a few weeks, sprayed out the distrubuter with carb cleaner several times, but it took a while.
That looked like 3 minutes working time, not 15 minutes. It's a good idea to let solvents work and loosen as much material as they can. A clean surface will shed product and suspended grime easier than a surface that still has a layer of grease. I've used many different engine cleaners and never needed to use more than low pressure hose end water for rinsing.

Go to Oreilly's buy and use the degreaser, spray with water then short out eletric then go back to Oreilly's and buy whatever you shorted. That sounds great.

Scott... Like your videos, However this product is to harsh for the engine.. It stinks, Leaves oily puddles, and typically no good
for electrical components as well. I ALWAYS use a bag to cover up the alternator. I personally use Tire FOAM. It CLEANS and PROTECTS. Engine looks fantastic 9 to 10 weeks down the road.
I didn't have much faith in it till i tried it. YES it works. Just break down the dirt with a mild cleaner, then TIRE FOAM. Engine looks like it just left the factory. Id like to see you do a video on this as well.. Keep them video's coming. Your doing great work out there.

Are you concerned about stripping oil "naturally" on the engine parts from the factory? Wouldn't it make things more prone to rust or corrosion?

To quiet those bashing you Scott as quickly as practical after you've cleaned an engine like this start the engine---a lot of the bad mouthing probably comes from thinking cleaning like this can cause problems starting or running.
I don't like using water under pressure as it can force itself into electrical connectors causing issues---city water pressure at a low flow used to flush away cleaners like this is more my speed.

I love their regular degreaser. My truck had an oil cooler line leak that I won't say how long I let it go. Do have a good reason though. But my truck was baaaaad underneath. Id just spray and let it work then come back with a heavy duty regular ol water bottle with a sprayer. Will do a stream or most and is pretty stout for a hand squeezer. Made my truck look almost new underneath

You have excellent hearing, @3:42 you can hear it penetrating the grease wow. It couldn't be just the bubbles foaming and popping. You can tell the difference between the grease bubbles and the other bubbles that's amazing.
I just came from a video that took 2 hours to clean an engine, protected all electrics and made sure not to wet many parts.

Any degreaser you use you must always cover the alternator or will have to change your alternator bearings in a couple of weeks.
you are right you want nothing entering the alternator,the charging system is the system on any car,i usually saran wrap my alternator when i clean under the hood,you must clean it or fall behind then it short circuits all kinds of stuff

I have never seen a "foamy" cleaner, degreaser, whatever" that actually worked unless you get in and scrub, this would be good for a quick 60% clean when you don't feel like going the extra mile. I am not a fan of spraying any cleaner, then blasting with water the engine compartment without covering all the electrical related items and spark plug wells, you never want water sitting in the there. Thanks for the information, I personally have never heard of or seen a O'reilly anything in my area.

Thanks for the video. I just used this product on my 2012 Pilot. It worked very well on the moderate areas like in the video. The heavier caked areas needed a second application after I let the bay dry thoroughly first. On an other note, is it me, or can this guy sit in for Howard Stern as a voice over so Howard could take a day off? Great job!

I have used Simple Green for years with similar results. Personally I cover my fuse box, electronics with a plastic bag.

And a regular water hose......we never have Engine Issues except the day I wash my wife s engine on an Oldsmobile cutlass I didn't start after so the mechanic dry the contact s inside distributor n WAM it start,,,,,,it also was the last time I wash her Engine🙄 u got my point. Newbie question: If you spray water into the engine compartment doesn't it risk damage something it there? I always want to keep the engine looking new but afraid if I wash it I'll damage something.
I use Turtle Wax tire cleaner foam. It will not hurt alternator. Let it sit for 10 minutes and break out the leaf blower etc. Wipe off excess. Done for 3.68 a can.
I wonder how it would've done if you had followed the directions and left it on for the full 15min......

Buy a half gallon jug of dollar store degreaser. I buy it at the 99 cent store for $1.99. Put it in a dollar spray bottle. Liberally spray it on whatever you are cleaning. Let it sit on there for maybe 15 minutes or so. Don't let it dry. Repeat spray gunky grease then using a pressure tip on the garden hose or a pressure washer spray it off. Lightly greasy area's will be clean including some of the paint. Spray heavy grease again. Might take a few more times but it will come clean with this stuff. Be sure to not get any cleaners on your paint. It leaves no film. The dollar store stuff does remove paint as well. If the dollar store stuff is not available Walmart carries a gallon of a purple degreaser cleaner in their tool/pressure washer isle for $4.99. It does the same job as the dollar store cleaner.

I never tried to clean an engine in a car but when I want a real clean on my motorcycle I coat the motor real good with dawn dishwashing liquid [warm motor] nice and thick let it soak in for about 20 min then hose it down then take it out and blow dry it

Purple degreaser works just as good too!. You should of rinse it first get that dirt loose and wet.then spray the degreaser.

Dallas Paint Correction & Auto Detailing well I did both and It look just the same as if I didn't soak the engine first but I feel like the degreaser works best if you get the engine bay wet/soak so it loosen the dirt and then put the degreaser after...plus the engine bay was really fill with dusty dirt all around.

Thanks for the video. Just a couple of quick comments: first, we tend to give more favorable reviews to an item or a service that was given as a compliment. Apparently, you have a friendly relationship with the associates at the auto parts store, and they gave you this product for free. We can't expect a truly objective rating. Second, unless you are using an "industrial-strength" degreaser, it would need more than 2 minutes to break down oil and grease. You should have allowed it to work longer. Lastly, never EVER use pressurized water to wash an engine. That's just asking for trouble.
Never had a problem using a pressure washer on an engine. You just have to know where you can and cant spray and not get too close.
Also disconnect the battery before spraying it with water, and let it dry or use a air compressor or leaf blower to dry afterwards and everything would be fine.

Was wondering since you never covered the alternator distributor or even that high pressure shooting at the engine the startup okay afterwards? I’ve been told my whole life to careful when using water in an engine bay and not getting anything wet that doesn’t need to be trying to keep water out of connectors and stuff... this man just took a pressure washer to his trucks motor.

Don't follow this advice! You must cover the engine, and make sure your alternator is covered, thats the most important. You can go over the outside of the engine with just a hose spray nozzle. Clean the engine with degreaser and some cloths
I just watched an engine cleaning video that advised to never use high pressure water so somebody is wrong LOL.
I had my engine wash with high pressure it got water damage had to take to Lexus to fix the problem Lexus have told me never to do that again they charge me $1500 to fix the problem now my Mecanic clean oil leaks with brakes cleaners and it works 12 cans cost around $30
You got to love these comments about people worried about "pressure" washing the engine compartment. It's 2022, not 1968. Engine components are a tad more resistant to water egress. Also, his pressure washer has about 7 psi more than a good garden hose nozzle.

The turtle wax tire shine the green can is the best you don't even use water. Just brush and wip. Make sure the engine is warm first. When you spray it on let it sit for 10 minutes before wiping it off.
