I think something like this is perfect for solo shooters for docs and such, allowing you to always nail your focus on manual cine lenses. $1k seems like a fairly reasonable price for this system.
I bought the pd movie live air 3 smart for my 6k setup and it works great for the $350 I paid for it used If I had to spend $1k+ on autofocus I’d probably just grab a second camera! That’s my thoughts on it now at least…
Hey Sam, I film primarily with anamorphics but the Moment anamorphic adapter does not have electronic focus. Similarly, the new Black Magic Pixis doesn’t have autofocus, but with this DJI kit I would be able to get auto focus and even zoom on a telephoto lens into the Pixis. The only downside is the increased cost, complexity, and how to configure the handle and everything. Personally, I’d rather the option of a control box which then uses whichever monitor you have to select focus points and subjects and stuff, but that’s just me.
I was considering using this on my Canon R5C even though it has auto focus in camera settings, as well as AF mode on Canon RF mount stills lenses, it actually does a decent job. However I still have 0.8 mod pitch geared lenses from DZO, which will come in handy using the DJI Focus pro unit. 🎉 A win for those that have manual lenses that can autofocus on the fly.
I finally got mine. All extras are from Smallrig. I put the wooden handle with an NPF battery plate on top on the left. Put two rails underneath and put the Lidar underneath the lens and the motor on the right side. I switched around the Focus Grip so it can mount on the right side as Im right handed. I have a BMPCC 6K so I use the NPF battery for long walks sightseeing that goes ontop of the wooden handle. Going on Safari in a few weeks so I will use a 90 V mount battery on that back of the rails pointed down words so I can leave in it on the edge of the safari vehicle resting on sandbags. Have another part coming in so I can quickly take off the Handles and switch to DJI RS4 Pro with a NPF battery mount on the side of the gimbal. Right now I cant get it to balance as I think its to tall and the new rail base plate will lower it. Right now its as compact as I can get and dont see any others that have done it the same way. Anyone wants a pic let me know and you or someone else can make a tutorial.
I was wondering about switching the handle grip to the right side. I use a Blackmagic Ursa12k and the handle only mount right side. Does the DJI Focus grip allow for mounting either side or did you have to make your own way to rig it on the right?
If I remember correctly you have to take the Rosetta mount off and move to the other side. There is loctite on there. Make sure not to strip the screws. My new part came in and everything is all nice and tight compact Used it last weekend and everything works great but was dropping frames for some apparent reason.
Yes..totally agree..me personally someone who is new into "gimbals" this looks like a nice option if I obviously don't go all out and grab a gimbal..and this feels like it would be great with those "natural looking" hand held shots..and casually carry around in the bag even when just doing everyday stuff with your mates and then decide to shoot some video..lol this is really interesting!..
Focus locking and AMF already was present in the DJI Transmission system, if you have the Ronin 4D handles, but it's handy, that DJI now have a standalone focus system and it also has that feature.
I'm very intrigued by this new system from DJI! As someone who is getting more into TH-cam and filming myself, I really prefer to use manual focus cinema lenses as I just love the look of them. But not having autofocus when filming yourself is really tough sometimes. I held out on buying the LiDAR rangefinder for my RS3 Pro because I was fine pulling focus manually when shooting other subjects. But when it comes to filming myself, I don't want to have to setup a gimbal on a tripod and waste time balancing lenses. Not needing the gimbal, having autofocus on a manual focus lens, and the beautiful grip and wheel system... yeah, I'll probably end up forking up the cash for this one!
This is a great product. I currently use Tilta’s Nucleus M system. It integrates well with the Mirage Mattebox system. From that said, I must say the LiDAR system would be much more suitable for my workflow. Thanks for the review.
Gh6 owner with stills auto glass 1. Do you need the focus motors given the partnership with DJI & Panasonic, would be interested to see how that works. 2. Does it work at all with auto still lenses? Wishful thinking that the focal length with be communicated via the system partnership. Great video too, excited to see a system where i don't have to buy the gimbal too
quick question, does this also work with lenses that do not have hard stops? and what about panasonic Body/Lenses do this System also work without the extra Motor via USB-C connection like with the Ronin System?
Your lidar videos convinced me to get the RS3 pro! Thanks for the info. Could you confirm if the Focus pro grip works with the earlier lidar rangefinder? Thanks again :)
If you’re shooting raw, I bet an aperture pull (like a focus pull but for aperture) would be a really cool effect. Has that been done? I would love to see it
Hello! Great review! Do you know if the compatibility with the previous generation of the LiDAR range Finder is good? I think i’ll get the grip only but didn’t see any info regarding 1st gen Range Finder (firmware updates)?
I’m most interested and excited about combining the LiDAR system with older 16MM cameras, cameras that have never had autofocus capabilities in the past.
@@UnchartedWorlds$140. I got one with this, one with rs4 pro, then bought the one for all 3. I feel like I'm rarely going to use all 3 but I do have 3 zoom cine lenses so possibly. Also be aware some lenses you will need 2 rails to stagger the motors if motors get in way of each other due to ring spacing. Not a huge deal. Also make sure you label them as lenses are stored in the motor, not the lidar. So make one dedicated to focus.
It'll be interesting to see what DJI do in future iterations to miniaturise this setup, I can totally see the lIdar & transmitter being integrated & miniaturised into something little bigger than a raveneye transmitter
Great video sam , I do think that future of af is with lidar would he nice to see two company's work together to introduce if into their next official camera release 😀
Looks like a great device! I'm using the PDMovie lidar on my Meike cinelenses and it works so much better than built in autofocus on prime lenses (in my opinion!) once you get used to setting forward or back focus.. Might need to give this one a try!
What you described at 9:55 is possible at least with my Ronin RS3 and Sony A74. You can bind a Ronin button to switch AF on/off so it won't focus on a subject passing the frame. It's also handy if you loose focus and just double press it to give the camera the command to "refocus".
It's the no top-handle things that keeps me from buying the All-In-One Combo. I use cube-style cinema cameras, Z CAM in particular, so to have this unit work as intended I would need to rig it somewhere in front of the monitor and hopefully not have my matte box get in the way of the LiDAR. This is so close to being a perfect system, it just needs the small tweaks to make it the perfect all-purpose focusing system.
I don’t see the point that we don’t need a gimbal any more. The gimbal is counteracting the cameraman’s movement. I would say that together the gimbal with this focus system becomes a full production system. Or you use a easy rig with this focus system. But you can’t argue, this is the cheapest professional version of a focus assist system. The hand remote only cost around 50K from Arri. So , well done DJI. Heading for the first Oscar nomination.
It's interesting. I'm a Stills shooter starting to dabbling with video. This feels like something useful to even overcome AF issues (*cough XH2S cough*). Really I had no idea solutions like this existed. Thank you for opening up my eyes!
All of the tech is bang on, now they need to resolve it like a gaming console. Simply cannot stand unnecessary cables. Resolve the aerials even if it reduces range, get it tight. Make the set up fast. Spring load the motors. I want to clip my camera in and out.
How does it compare to the previous version? I had the previous version of the Lidar. I was very frustrated with it. Saving the profiles did not really work and I had to recalibrate all the time. This made it completely unusable in a professional context. The theory of it is great, but it is miles away from internal stabilization of the Sony camera. I say this as BlackMagic user.
Maybe this is a stupid question, but on DJI’s website it says nothing about Lumix cameras in their compatibility list. Surely this is compatible with the S5 ii, right??
The demo model B&H had to try at NAB had so many issues. They said it kept having problems and wasn't worth the headache. Also it doesn't work in low light that great
Ha! That's the most important comment on this video. Will give DJI some time to work out the bugs and do firmware updates. Also might just not be an actual useful tool for production companies.
looks great but no price details and also if this is to use as an alternative for a gimbal, maybe a showcase as to why due to the gimbal being sued for the buttery smooth shots as opposed to handheld? would of liked to see it in action. great video though, another piece of tech i want that i never knew i wanted.....
I'd be very curious how this compares to the units actually used on productions, ie: Preston or Arri WCU hand units, with Light Ranger unit. Typically units like the DJI don't usually do well with all the wireless interference you'd find on proper sets (terradeks, wireless DMX, or WiFi in general). Might save a lot of 1st ACs some money! I will say though, none of this is terribly new except some of the LiDAR stuff, but this definitely makes it more accessible... That price man... under $1k while Arri or Preston units are typically above $20k!
Expensive, maybe. Depends! If you are comparing it with arri, or Preston kits it’s stupid cheap. However, for those of us working in that world, we make money with our gear by renting it to the production we are working on. To get lidar and full fiz abilities, $1800 is a steal.
Got the s5iix bc of you 👌🏼 Have always used Sony, but needed a reliable podcasting cam that's full frame! The Lumix system is really cool and I'm loving the colors right out of the camera! That gimbal is way more than I need lol but looks cool
hype levels 📈 then I saw the price 😩 but I guess it's not that bad lol 🤷🏻♂ considering the tech that's involved. one day I'd like to jump into the Lidar system, but until then I'm ok with the good ol manual focus lol
Btw @samholland quick lumix S5II question, when you record audio into your S5iix do you set the audio gain record level setting to standard, or low? (I think low is for "loud environments" and gives -12db)
Can you use the same lidar sensor with something like the RS3 so you CAN use a gimbal with the same system or go with this handheld? I would love this system for my films because I don’t usually use Gimbals for things like that, but I love the tracking with the Lidar/Gimbal combo for events when the speaker moves around and I’m a small crew (often by myself). I wouldn’t want to get two whole systems if I can get the one LiDAR sensor, then different accessories to pair with it as needed in different scenarios.
This makes me regret my latest gimbal purchase from Zhiyun (weebill 3s) not that it's bad but the DJI ecosystem is just on another level :( Great video bro! I really need that lidar now xD
You make great content. Thank you for the time you put into the video. I Just shared Your video inside of my community to see what everyone's thoughts are on it. Personally I think it's not a good fit for MOST people. I'm mostly curious about all the little trouble shooting that has to be done. Overall, DJI has my support as a company leading the industry in innovation and quality. I would not use this piece of equipment, but I can see how it could help a lot of higher end videographers.
@@SamHolland I'm going back and rewatching all the Rs 3 Promo content from last year's release for a comparison video to help people make "The Better Buy." It's fascinating to see the 2 together.
so what do you do when you wanna do other types of shots ( further away) or use a 85mm+ lense to get stuff.. - as far as i understand the device simply does not focus that far - is that correct?
I would say this is a tool designed to enhance filmmaking for small teams and make life easier especially for narrative projects. For people filming themselves or vlogging, better off sticking to in camera autofocus with native lenses depending on the brand. The amount of detail to this piece is definitely not for everyone but rather an investment for a small production crew or company that work in small teams. Great breakdown though, under 15 minutes, all makes sense.

How easy is this to transfer from handheld/tripod to a DJI gimbal? I use IRIX lenses which work great with the RS3 and focus motors, but not so great when you want to switch to handheld/tripod for part of a shoot. It would be great if you could just pull it off the gimbal and put onto a tripod or handheld
I buy it one month ago a LIDAR and sorry this isn't perfect ... 600€ for that ouch :/ The LIDAR has a lot of problem if your stage isn't perfectly lightened or if you need to be dynamic. Also don't try to use it without gimball, he work great than decide to decalibrate more and more
Nice tutorial great info, but for demonstration and visualisation purposes this was hard to watch, you were explaining features but barely showing the results. i would have wanted to see how these things work
Has anyone done any tests with the LiDAR in low light conditions? Since regular camera autofus uses a different system to focus, is it safe to say that LiDAR works much better in low light?
Sam..your "setup example" here..how heavy is that..bc for some that is getting a bit much? as far as attachments?..and then this is suppose to be used "handheld"..and with so much on the whole rig..are you getting into the territory of this being kinda contradictory?..heavy setup using handheld?..at some point would you rather just use the gimbal then?..lol
What do you think? Would you use the hand unit for wireless or just the grip? 🎥

Is it so much better then latest Sony AF systems?
Looks like a good bit of kit! Also noticed the Les Paul in the background, what sort of music do you play? Any classic rock?
🎥👌🏻 ooooo yes very much so. If you’re into that you might like my new channel… stay tuned 🤩
Expensive, maybe. Depends! If you are comparing it with arri, or Preston kits it’s stupid cheap. However, for those of us working in that world, we make money with our gear by renting it to the production we are working on.
To get lidar and full fiz abilities, $1800 is a steal.
When will these be available for purchase? It says out of stock on DJI website and B&H it’s says coming soon.
@allen_bernardo_jr hi. I just have it on standard mode 🎥👌🏻
The link only sends us to the Gimble. Is there a way to add a link for each item of gear needed for this set up?
This was great, I would've loved to see some footage as you used it but otherwise excellent.
Man this is fckn amazing! Such a useful device, especially for small crew.
They definitely need to add a lefthanded version.
This makes me regret my latest gimbal purchase from Zhiyun (weebill 3s) not that it's bad but the DJI ecosystem is just on another level :(
Great video bro! I really need that lidar now xD
🤩🎥
Cracking video Buddy .... yes I love it but no not for now as it will just be another bit of kit collecting dust but I do love the Lidar !
08:19 looks like mr. beast is randomly chilling on that sofa
You know what though... I'm not opposed to the price though!!! I thought this was gonna be a $4,000 upgrade.. nope! More like $900 for the good stuff.
Awesome content. Can you use the old LiDAR system with this grip?
You can mount top handle just set the distance from sensor...
Thank you! 🤩🙏🏻🎥 yeh it’s not for everyone but it’s very handy for those who need it
@@SamHolland I'm going back and rewatching all the Rs 3 Promo content from last year's release for a comparison video to help people make "The Better Buy." It's fascinating to see the 2 together.
What model Manfrotto tripod is that you’re using under the camera rig itself? It’s really compact
Hey. It’s cool isn’t it. It’s the Manfrotto head listed in the description but the legs are here - geni.us/EKZh7qz
GREAT for getting low down shots
@@SamHolland much appreciated 🙏🏼
so what do you do when you wanna do other types of shots ( further away) or use a 85mm+ lense to get stuff..
You still have the Gh6 ? I think it works without the motors on the newer lenses
would be cool to show different rig build outs.
I have an OP3. With it, I don't need any other camera and the related accessories any more.
That is an amazing cinema tool.
NO MORE GIMBALS! YEAH! NOW FOR TWICE THE MONEY YOU CAN INVEST IN THE NEW TO DO WHAT YOU'RE NOT DOING ALREADY...YOUR CONTENT IS BOSS THOUGH BRO!👊
I definitely would use it - assuming I had the dosh...
I wonder how lidar handles lens-breathing?
Curious, can this be applied for a zoom lens for smooth zoom instead of focus?
Good presentation, DJI is innovative. Not for me but useful for BlackMagic users. Lot of complexity and things to go wrong...
Great vid , what brand and model is your video head , on the SIRUI Carbon Fiber Mini Tripod, pls
Brother, didnt see the video yet, but THANK YOU for putting "videography" in the title man... thank you
Wow! I was laughing at myself as I kept thinking, this is so far above my understanding I would have to watch this 100 times to just start to understand. Your knowledge is impressive and I am on number 23 of viewing this video and still not sure I understand it any better. Thank you for always challenging us to learn and become better.
slightly off topic....would you recommend the ranger lens?
They look really nice from an image perspective but I had an issue with the par focal not working which is why I haven’t made the video 😬
@@SamHolland Thanks dude. A back focus issue perhaps.
Is it possible to mount the LiDAR from the handle hot shoe?
What's the cost of all that gear?
Buena sugerencia! Gracias
Can I use the the grip and a single motor for zoom without the LIDAR and the other motors?
I’ve been trying to get this device. Not luck 😢
Maybe I missed something but why is this instead of gimbal?
How easy is this to transfer from handheld/tripod to a DJI gimbal? I use IRIX lenses which work great with the RS3 and focus motors, but not so great when you want to switch to handheld/tripod for part of a shoot. It would be great if you could just pull it off the gimbal and put onto a tripod or handheld
Imagine vlogging with this on vacation lmfao. Too much.
Yeh check this video out - th-cam.com/video/QObqDbLGTqE/w-d-xo.htmlsi=AraTIthiTBnC5SlA
Sammy boy, great video brother. As always!
- Johnny B.
I remember when you had 800 subs look at you know, well done mate
Thanks brother 🤩🙏🏻🎥 hope you’re well
Hey, in real world use, how do you find the range, when you look at Sony/Lumix AF, does it reach as far?
Any special features just for lumix cameras?
