Let us know what you think of the DJI Focus Pro down below!
useless for non-parfocal zoom lenses
Looks fantastic, however it is still very complicated for a camera rig without the RS4. It would be nice to have it as a "next gen" professional tool fot focus pullers. Also the DJI Hight Bright Monitor is not good for focus pullers; the new SmallHDs, or even a Portkeys, are way better, and Teradek is king on low latency.
Please do a RS4 Pro to RS3 Pro comparison. Please stress test them both, and see if the motors are truly “20%” stronger like they claim.
I don't get why Sony doesn't do the opposite: a series of lens adapters that bring out on a usb-c port the lens pins to connect an external focus motor driven by the internal autofocus, they'd just need to integrate the calibrating software in the firmware, it would be awesome and they'd sell a lot, I bet lots of users that want Sony's autofocus would buy a Sony camera just for that possibility alone.
Would the grip work with the older dji lidar?
i really dont know a better Cine tech channel than this one i literally look forward TO THESE VIDEOS
Try watch MEDIA DIVISION mate😊
I actually really appreciate the way you guys talk about these products while actually testing them right here in front of our eyes and talking about it throughout the video. Its Amazing! Instead of most of the YT'ers out there just sitting on a chair and just talking about specs and what it does, literally making you fall asleep! This here is actually educational and its fun to follow along! Great Job!
By far the most unbiased piece I've seen since the release. I've back ordered mine with CVP but 100% agree about the tiny screen on the handle.
Glad someone else is saying they should release a 5" on-camera monitor. If they included an integrated TX module in the on-camera SDI monitor, with a loop-through so you could connect either an EVF or second monitor, that would be amazing and really cut down on cables. Transmission systems are so bulky, cable-heavy, and a PITA to mount and manage.
Yep, the side handle seems really clunky when this could be added to a monitor instead. I'd still want a 7" monitor though.
They really should release a specific solution for this. R&D costs would be minimal & if they could manage good camera control for Red, Sony Venice, etc, would probably sell like hotcakes.
I've watched quite a few reviews of this system but once again cvp absolutely smashed it out of the park. thanks guys
Thanks for being one of the only channels pointing out the quirks of it. Still, this think is sick, but we still need to know these things before we shoot to adapt!
Thanks so much. Your reviews are the most comprehensive and trustworthy out there.
As always a great proper review. Really so few of the pre-release videos on this proper address issues . Bravo.
Would love to have that bracket when available. Brilliant.
Best review of this system I've seen!
Hey Jake and team,
CVP sell our range of run/stop cables which work on the RS4 Pro, but ALSO the DJI Focus Grip Pro (the RSS port is next to the OLED screen!):
Sony FX6/BURANO
RED KOMODO / KOMODO-X / V-RAPTOR EXT
RED DSMC2 CTRL
3-pin Fischer Straight and Right Angle
The only review that’s necessary. Thanks! Subscribed.
Thanks for watching! Jake
The mounting system using the SmallRig lens support is a great idea! 😍 Please make it a thing!(and affordable please 😭)
Thank you for your willingness to be critical. I'm very interested in this for my Panasonic S1 and manual lenses.
Looks very interesting. Great review. yes, let have a look at the new gimbals.
This ist the most useful tutorial about it. Thanks
Thank you for the good information. This has been a product I was considering, but I just wish other companies would get into this and make more improvements. God bless and have a great day.
I have worked with the original Lidar the past year with the RS3 Pro. It's fantastic! I really wish DJI would give FEET, not just METERS as an option when calibrating the lens settings. Also the fact that the new Lidar can detach from the cold shoe bracket is a great bonus when trying to mount with unique rigs.
Glad to see DJI still working on this tech. I'm going to hold off on this version. I bought the full Ronin and Lidar kit and wound up returning it. Dealt with way too many issues on it, the biggest being its tracking needed *way* more work as there was no way for the system to actually track correctly. It would lose the subject or insist on tracking at an offset that wound up with the subject's face being almost completely out of the frame. As mentioned, this version looks like they Frankenstein-ed the earlier version just to throw something out there for people thirsty for auto-focus. Maybe next iteration it'll be worth picking up.
16:29 thanks! This is what I needed to see! To know I can control the focus with the new LiDAR attached to the high bright without the 4D grips on. (Via new focus pro handgrip)
Thanks again for your great video!
One week ago I just ordered the 4d the grips and LiDAR system to work with my high bright / transmission system, to control focus ( but mainly to auto focus and track) with the cable hub. Luckily they are still able to be returned.
I am trying to use my gimbal and lidar system on a jib, and have been looking for a good hand control solutions that are more similar to broadcast style jib hand controls. The 4D hand grips are not great for this, also no left handed version available. So I was using the 4D controls flipped upside down in the wrong hands (not comfortable) and the joystick control still sucks compared to real Jib controllers. I think I’m gonna return the 4d grips, and switch to this focus pro handle for my left hand focus now I still need to find a comparable good joystick for tilt/pan for my right hand.
Any one have any luck doing what I’m talking about?
Really looking forward to that mounting bracket 😏
I would love to see a review of the PDmovie Lidar system. I know it doesn't have as many of the features as this one but i have a feeling they are probably playing catch up.
informative video Thanks CVP
Great review and Yep i can to the same conclusion in my review too. I do plan on revisiting it. There are some exciting things about this system but missed the mark on a lot of professional features and build
Thanks for sharing your thoughts on it! I get a lot of great detail for the CVP channel. An editor's note: build in some safety margin for graphics to account for TH-cam's UI. The sensitivity data at 12:48 is obscured by the CVP logo in TH-cam's UI and subsequently by the playbar UI if I try to move the mouse.
Thank you for this review, it's very thorough. I really want this but when watching dji's video's I wasn't quite sold.
It's fantastic but I agree that the implementation could be better and that was deduced from first glance. Hopefully the next version will be a little simpler and better handle design.
Great review and quality, as always.
My Focus Pro just got delivered and I wanted to setup my Sigma Cine Primes.
I went through the process of manually adding the lens (where you focus at 1m and then at 4m) and set the distance from the lidar to the sensor plane correctly.
But I found that the focus was not correct after the setup.
It was fine at 1m and 4m, but was off in between.
I also found that the focus went crazy on distances below 1m (my idea is it should work as close as 0.5m shouldn`t it).
Did you have any of these issues?
All the best
Yes, please do a review of the new Gimbals. Thank you.
Awesome video as usual! I have a question.. I have a black magic 6Kpro and picked up a lidar 1st gen model and DJI RS 3pro just a week before they introduced the new lidar focus pro and RS 4 pro... DZO came out with Vespid cyber which could be directly connected to the lidar to make calibration of lenses much faster. But now with the new Lidar focus pro and the list of lens added in the lidar system.. do I still need to go for the vespid cyber as it has the attachments for a fast calibration or could it be any other cinema lens.. and what would you suggest if that is the case? thanks
Good review from a reliable company. Always interesting and balanced. Two questions though: 1) where to get the bracket for the monitor 2) tu use the Transmission overlay do we need the USB hub? Thanks
As alway great video! I'd prefer a Nucleus II formfactor for controling manually and fricking ANGLED USB-C cables!
Great review! Apologies if this has already been covered but I presume you can’t zoom a lens with the zoom motor and still have accurate lidar autofocus due to having to calibrate to the focal length. I’m asking as a lot of the videos show all three motors attached.
great review....thank you. one thing I wansnt sure about even after looking on DJI website was if you can rig your camera with just the focus pro grip and DJI monitor and still get all the "fancy" focus graphic overlays without going through the Tx...The monitor has HDMI in, so could take feed direct from camera HDMI out. Yes the monitor could be a bit big, but for us old timers with failing eyesight, the bigger the screen the better...ha ha !!
Nope, you need a TX to communicate and the hub cable. Jake
thanks for feed back, dji missed a trick there i think, should beable to get focus info direct on monitor without tx but think they use the sdi meta data after looking into this deeper....@@CVPTV
Actually, with the High Bright monitor, when you add the SDI-out module, does it transmit the LIDAR overlay to any monitor? I know there's still a big issue of signal delay (DJI Transmission is not 0-delay unlike Teradeks or Vaxis), but having LIDAR overlay on any monitor would be awesome!
Sure this may work for single-op one-person setup, but as a focus puller, the weak point to this is that in order to get the birds-eye LIDAR overlay, you have to go thru the high-bright monitor which DOES NOT have SDI output (I'd want to output video to my SmallHD 1303) and it has latency. You have to spend another $500 to get the SDI/HDMI output module and from reviews the quality of that add-on has been horrible.
A few other things:
-- they could be using AI on the phone (perhaps next gen) to help with focus, especially when the item is too hard to tap ont he screen (not sure if that's available or not) because it's too small.
-- so, instead, you could enter a prompt into the phone app that says something like "focus on the little blue bird" and until you clear that prompt it will be trying to find and autofocus on the little blue bird. Once it finds it, it can just track with conventional means, but this way it knows what to focus on.
That lidar focus is amazing. But I hope we get it to be able to focus even on small things like a bee.
I see the "Viltrox" category on the list. Do they include profiles for the Viltrox anamorphics?
It would be nice to see 3rd parties develop a way to use this with older DJI and Non-DJi gimbals.
There is a huge REC button, but totally no cables for Arri, Panavision, RED and other actual Cinema Cameras. Will they be releasing those? Or just a button for mirrorless camera only?
My experience with Lidar on the Ronin 4D was not good. It could only see like 8-10 feet in front of it for auto focus and even then it would hunt. Maybe I'm spoiled coming from Sony's AF.
Can you use the battery grip to power the camera at the same time when using the Lidar and focus motor?
Totally in for one as soon as they sell the kit without the hand unit. Totally a bridge between Nucleus-M and other options.
As in without the hand grip or the FIZ hand unit? Jake
@@CVPTV Without the FIZ hand unit. I'm so sad they're delaying selling the the solo shooter version's sales. The FIZ hand unit looks phenomenal, just not needed in my work flow currently.
They do sell it without the hand unit for around $1k.
@@olivertrees Not yet! It's still in "reservation". I know it will be available, I'd love to know when!
lol see I'd be jumping at it if I could get a 3 motor kit with just the fiz controller. I don't care about the on camera unit. I know I could a la carte it, but I don't see a way to get the case doing it that way.
can you make a video of you building this setup ?
could i use the handgrip externally from the rig? say if i was using a directors monitor and had a DOP manning the camera? also what’s the furthest focal length that can be set?
Would love to see this system compared to the competition from Tilta, Arri and Preston!
Can the focus pro connect to the high bright monitor and allow control without using the wireless transmitter if you want it as an on camera system?
what's going on in the background of the shot at 13:59? Did you stabilize it in post, or is that some sort of rolling shutter artifact?
I have the last gen lidar unit with the cable hub which I use on my RED. Its not the best, and struggles up close. Can you purchase the new Lidar unit without the rest of the bundle?
So the Lidar does not send distance information to the high bright monitor? I thought I saw a video where they were following the subjects distance next to the focus scale on the monitor. Similar to what you get with the focus bug and arri hi 5.
with 2x anamorphics u think to type in the horzonel fild of few coud make sence?
does the app allow you to see the lidar waveform focus plane? I'm wondering if I can use my ipad air as a monitor with that readout! that would be really good and save like 3k lol
Is there any way to mount in in combination with a matte box? Could be difficult right?
can the hand grip transfers the camera screen instead of the lidar? like using it as a small monitor?
Where can you get the bracket for the high bright monitor to attach to the focus pro, if it doesn't come in either kit?
Can the lidar unit be used on the 4D to benefit from improvements in distance and points?
One of the update notes says that they added support for the previous generation focus motor and lidar units. Will they sell just the new handle separately to allow customers to still use their older gear?
They have the handgrip as separate product on DJI store.
Hey CVP!
Trying to rig this up without the handle, since I'll be using it with the transmitter hand handunit, but it doesn't relay lidar info to the transmission unit and to the highbright monitor, what am I doing wrong? The correct port is sent to the video transmitter. Any clues?
Seems like the same lidar as last year. Does it work with that one?
Still doesn’t feel quite finished. Maybe V3 will be “The One”.
finally i can vlog with my alexa 65!
Great video! Could i sync two motors to auto focos at the same time? For instance: when shooting VR/ Stereo 3D?
That's also my question, does the Lidar even work with two synced cameras, if so that could be really useful!
I don't get if this could be used on Lumix GH6. Few months ago Panasonic released a firmware upgrade for DJI Lidar rangefinder...
Is it possible to calibrate photo lenses like a Canon 24-70mm with an infinite map? And define a Point A (minimum distance) and a Point B (infinite)? Thanks
can focus pro work on abnormal focus ring on a lens such as infinity and minimum focus are inverse ?
Do you know where to find the list of lenses for which they already have profiles?
Is it Helios 44-2 58mm on 17:14? I can't find this lens anywhere
does this work w the RS3 Pro? I can't find any info on it
So would these work with zoom lenses?
It looks all clean. But many times the camera builds have a mattebox and if you mount it directly under the lens like that it wouldnt work with a mattebox so that product would have to be designed in a way that you can still use the mattebox.
What I am trying to figure out is how to attach the grip to my camera handles with arri rosette. Any ideas?
What is the maximum possible sensor to lidar distance?
Can I calibrate it without gimbal?? Or i have to buy gimbal as well??
Can the Lidar be used on still lenses
The 15mm rod mounts are unadjustable? That was an incredibly bad design decision… still looking forward to trying this out.
Thank you for this review. Knowing DJI and how fast their turnover on new products and updates, I'll skip this one, with the hope that the next update takes into account such constructive inputs.
Looks promising but probably the next generation is going to be a bit handier than the current handles. Totally agree that having a nice 5 inch monitor with the lidar would be great for smaller cameras like the raptor and the Komodox. Why have a smaller camera and than add a huge handle to it.
But question: rumour has it that you can use the new handle with the lidar from the rs3. Can you confirm that? Than a 350€ investment wouldn’t be to bad to match it to the freshly bought rs3 lidar…
Having the hand unit and RS 4 seems a bit redundant. Would be nice it you could just detatch the gimbal part of the RS 4 and use it same as the hand unit.
The video that I want and I’m gonna ask about at NAB when I talk to DJI, is what from the new system will work on the RS3 pro? We have the transmission system and LiDAR and have not gotten to use it much as we had issues
The new Lidar is compatible with RS3 Pro. I checked DJI website. I believe U need the new focus motor though too
When is the release date
is this compatibility with BMCC 6k?
When is this going ot be released? Seems out of stock everywhere.
No eye tracking atm unfortunately, in other reviews one can clearly see it is focusing to face surface instead of eyes on extreme close-ups. And still no 19mm bracket for motors, which is unfortunate but manageable. But, still, it’s a remarkable product. I will def buy as soon as possible
Eye tracking is challenging given it searches for depth, not details like eyes. Just the nature of lidar
@@zanderwilll That's what the camera portion of the unit should be doing though.
@@zanderwilll yes and no, it’s using not only LiDAR data to focus, but also own camera to recognize faces, cars, or selected objects. I suppose the camera might be just too wide for eye AF.
RS 4 PRO Video please
will you all review Kinefinity cameras?
Weird that when this was announced for their gimbals there was comprehensive LUMIX support and now with this package… no support at all
Please test it on the Nikon Z58mm F0.95 at f0.95.

👏👏👏👏👏👏
I've only seen videos using primes how does this work with zooms ?
As long as the zoom is parfocal, should work fine. If not focus will shift and it won't perform well. Jake
@@CVPTV I've been curious wanting to use with my Dzofilm 20-50 and 50-125 thanks for the reply
What's your guys take on the strength of the motors?
We mention it in the video. They seem very strong! Jake
@@CVPTVGood to hear!
My biggest gripe is that it doesn’t work with other systems. They have awesome solutions but I want to mix and match brands
They don't make any money with a mix and match solution. That is why so many companies are going proprietary.
I probably delusionally would LOVE to combine a BlackMagic URSA Mini Pro 12K on a Ronin 4D "gimbal" and just float around with shoots. Or worse figure out out to shoot 12K per each eye in VR with the BM 12K + (dual?) Lidar to help with over the top VR #goals...
@@SuperbustrHow would they not make money by making it more accessible? Currently only people already in DJI’s ecosystem would even think of buying this. A company being proprietary is greed.
@@BlackPartyFilms Nah. Getting customers to invest more into a single system makes a company more money. The cine equipment industry is struggling financially. So this is what companies are having to do in some cases to keep their companies going.
@@Superbustr where did you find that the video equipment industry is struggling? It’s actually growing. Making this a proprietary system that forces you spend thousands more for its full capabilities is goofy. They’re eating their own tail at the point
I don't think pulling focus using DJI's video transmission system is a good call. Plenty of intermittent drops in video quality and latency. Maybe in a pinch or as a fallback.
change it to a dc plate and turn it into a ocu-1 DJI version
You say that you don't need anything else to use it, but looks like only 1 control wheel...
I'd expect at least 2 (focus and zoom)
i think that someone is going to pair this to a vision pro and use eye tracking to autofocus
I assume that the lidar setup won't work with zoom lens for documentary.
Yes but only if your lens is parfocal. Jake
I suppose one can map it to several separate lenses and use it as a variable prime if the lens is not parfocal
So then who’s gonna be the first mirrorless camera manufacturer to put this tech inside the camera?
I think I know why the screen on the handset is so small, hold it up next to the receiver of a DJI lav and test my theory for me please #costcutting
It won’t work with sigma 18-35mm lens 😢😢
The USB-C connections are a deal breaker for me.
