I found the Monitor & Control App by Sony also works pretty great instead of Monitor+! It can connect via bluetooth or also wired via USB-C and has some handy features to control your camera and/or your lens! 👍
I love that you mentioned what bag this rig would fit in. That's been one of my main issues switching between a rigged out FX3 and a barebones FX3 rig, and which carrying case setup is best for both.
Great video thanks for sharing. I totally agree that the best monitor would be your phone and tablet but the Monitor+ app is very limited to specific cameras. I wish they had an option to just take a HDMI signal from anything and allow it to display a high resolution on a phone. Camera control is a bonus but a clean image is a necessity
i really like it it’s super close to my dream rig the only things i’d change is adding a top handle that you can put both the monitor and the lidar unit on and i’ve been using a long tripod plate as somewhat of rails with a npf plate at the back
Great video. ❤❤ how can we connect monitor plus app with iphone 14 pro max wired? I tried it with lightning to usb c cable. But its not working. Anyone have any other idea? Please help me.
I used those magnetic filter too, until I was shooting from a car and bumped the camera on the door frame and popped off the ND filter, never to be seen again. I haven't used those mag filters since...
Very cool rig, compact and simple. It would just need a battery system that plugs/clips in for the "just in case" situations. Apparently that app on Android is badly reviewed because it drains the batteries very fast.

I love it! Well done. I have just ordered the Kondor Blue cage for the Lidar hoping it will unlock some mounting ideas but I like your idea of a quick release plate as well especially since the cold shoe of my ZVE1 as well as its Smallrig cage are not centered. One thing missing is the sound. I have added a Hollyland Lark MK2 for wireless recording. This provide a better sound and avoid the focus motor noise while being easy to carry. What I’m missing right now is a way to switch from this handheld rig to the RS4 Pro. It it painful to remove the handgrip, reconnect all the cable, etc. because the RS4 Pro can manage the Lidar.
I actually reached out to Kondor Blue to see if they could get me the Lidar cage in time for this video, but it hasn’t arrived yet, so this was my remedy 😅 honestly I like how it turned out regardless. For audio I’m using the DJI Mic 2 when I need off camera sound. Actually had that mentioned in the video but trimmed it for time. I have the RS4 as well and have been trying to figure out the quick switch too. Honestly I haven’t come up with a SUPER quick way. Usually just disconnect the side handle and attach that to the left side of the RS4. But then cables become a big annoyance and limit the mobility of the gimbal a bit.

@@kylemeshna we’re in the same boat! Well, I would have preferred that you unveil a magic trick for the RS4 switch but at least I feel less alone 😅. I am using an Atomos Shinobi 2 as my monitor but your video convinced me to buy the Monitor+ app for a lighter rig with my phone. For the PL adapter, I have the Meike Drop-in (like the Mofage Poco) but I have to detach the DJI grip everytime I want to go from VND to clear filter. @@kylemeshna Nice catch. Do you plan to use another motor to control the VND? My only complaint would be that the VND is not removable meaning you would need to switch to another PL adapter in case you don’t need the ND filter, right? There is one simple accessory I’m struggling to find. The KB cage for the LiDAR could allow me to mount it just above the lens for better focusing accuracy. I would need a simple rail that would sit flush on top of the cage with the right length to bring the LiDAR to the right distance with the lens with the minimum gap in height.
Thanks Kyle! Great video! I need to try the image stabilization with standard because I tried it once with my anamorphic lens with active and it was all screwed up and I need to set the FX3 monitor to no desqueeze. Thanks for this tip!!
very clever solution indeed! but the pulsing in and out focusing is kinda annoying, especially if youre a solo filmaker and youre infront of the video, is there any solution for that, maybe reduce the sensitivity of the lidar, or finding a non focus breating anamorphic lens i guess (correct me if i’m wrong)
This is a great build! Could you show what it would take to transfer this to a gimbal setup? Ideally, its just removing the phone + Mount and transferring the focus pro handle to a different nato rail mount that is already on the gimbal. Thanks!
Super easy to do so, yes. If you use the Smallrig VMount plate it’s still very compact. I did another video highlighting that option that you can mix n match with. That vid can be found here: th-cam.com/video/7Nb1WLRzOpI/w-d-xo.html I really just wanted to keep this one ultra lightweight. I’ve been doing a lot of hiking and traveling this fall, so I didn’t want to be lugging around a big kit with me
Oh I totally get the most compact scenarios for the task at hand, I love the rig you’ve built. But the battery drainage would annoy the SH!t out of me 🤘🏻
Would it be possible to rig the fx3 with anamorphics and use this dji gadget remotely? I’m in the automotive film industry and i use the movmax razor arm car mount, djirs4 and control the camera from inside. Always wanted to shoot anamorphic but not sure wether this would work for me. Thank you, big fan of your content
Does the new smallrig cage and focus pro bracket give room to get an HDMI cable in? Working with a NINJA V, so want to use HDMI, but can't get the HDMI cable in due to the bracket being in the way
Similar issue unfortunately, but if you take the hdmi door off the camera it goes in fine. Another option would be mounting your rod clamp on the bottom or top of the rig. The Focus Pro handle can instead attach to the nato rail already present on the fx3 Cage… just not quite as elegant
@@kylemeshna thanks, I put the rod mount on the other side and mounted the Focus pro handle a bit lower down and the door opens wide enough to get the HDMI cable in
@ sorry. I was looking at the DJI website and the focus pro grip I saw the description and it says it’s compatible with focus pro lidar, and focus pro motor. Assuming that it’s optional. The reason why I’m asking is because I have a Nikon D850 and the RS 4 combo is compatible with my camera. And the RS 4 combo has the pro motor. I just don’t see a lot of videos with the Nikon D850 with the RS 4. So I’m just trying to get ideas. Video was helpful but just had that question in mind.
If the Kondor blue quick disconnect has anti movement locking pins but the DJI mount doesn’t have the female side that then how can it guarantee anti slip? Reason I’m asking, I have a similar setup and had the DJI range finder on top of the small rig star trail matte box in a similar fashion and unfortunately it stripped the insert thread.. I’m trying to find a solution with ARRI locking pins or something.
Wow I’m glad I watched this. I was about to splurge on a big fx3 rig but think I’ll go with a lot of this first before buying a v mount and matte box. Cool insight! Plus it looks like this newer cage mounts directly to tripods and gimbals, yeah?
It’s got an Arca Swiss on the bottom, which works with most tripods. you’ll need to attach the gimbal plate to it, but thats super easy and many gimbal plates attach directly to Arca Swiss
