    Thanks for the video! I had a similar issue. I ran a 68 Evinrude 33 on a 78 Starcraft for several outings before I realized there was a problem. It was running too rich. Leaning out the high idle a touch solved it! I was novice to boats and was very happy to have my motor performing correctly. That said, I'm now trying to resolve an issue with it falling out of gear. I've got some new parts and have been turning wrenches so hopefully she will be back to the water in a few days. Thanks again.

      Glad this helped someone! My boat was slipping out of forward at the end of last season. I took my boat to my 70+year old boat guru. It wasn't the forward gear as I suspected. It was the dog clutch. My guy was able to fix/replace it and this year she's running perfect again! Good Luck

      @@michaelhulbert6360 Hey Michael. Unfortunately I sold this boat last year and the manuals went with it. I wasn't thinking and I should have scanned the manual before I sold the boat. My apologies

    Tach, speedo, or GPS. You can buy plug wire triggered cheap china tachs off ebay. I'm by myself. I rigged a scrap piece of copper tube (which flexes a little for minor steering), I get it warmed and out into a clear area, then rig the copper tube onto the high speed jet (the bottom one is high speed, not high idle) and then tune that one. When I'm satisfied, I go down and tune the slow speed jet. Then for a check I go back and re-check the high speed. I did not quite catch what you said, but don't adjust the high speed to limit RPM. You are adjusting for best mixture, and you don't want it too lean or rich. If the engine overspeeds at highspeed, it doesn't have "enough prop."
    I just picked up a 66 Johnson 33.

    Same carb on my 28hp speeditwin, I was always told 1.5 turns for both the high and low. I adjusted my freshly rebuilt carb today, using the 1.5 as a reference, and did find that i had to lean it out quite a bit, probably right around to that 3/4 turn. Good to see that page in the manual, I have this carb on 3 motors, always a chore to get er just right.

    Thank you! I’ve recently started getting a 69 model 33HP Seahorse running again. Rebuilding the lower unit now. But the carburetor I was concerned about. Same carb.

    Thanks for the explainations! I worked with few engines of that years and are always useful these kinds of informations. Actually i am restoring the same engine.
    After i restarted end setted the carburettor, i saw an other problem: at minimum rotation It over heats up to 230°F, It take ten minutes but increase, but just i insert the Gear even without accelerate, the temperatur drop quikly at 100°F.
    At maximum Power the same hottest parts of Power head mantain among 158/170°F.
    May be It normal than at low rotation without Gear in, It over heats?

      @ct1762 ปีที่แล้ว

      no. you have a pump issue. when was your impeller last changed? i bet its stiff as a board or missing a vane. 230f are you crazy?! thats way too hot. also too hot at WOT. should be around 120 if that. be sure to replace water tube grommet, and that all intake passages on gearcase are open/clean. temp should be 125-152.5 f at top of head (dont take temp anywhere else like all these other geniuses) at 900 rpm, so basically just idle in neutral. what kind of motor would last idling at 230f? id check your exhaust plate for warpage now, as it can let in water.

    È migliorato, ma secondo me mancano ancora qualche centinaio di rpm...la compressione è buona..??
    Io posseggo un norseman 40, un motore quasi identico al tuo... però del 1972.

    • @joewallace38
      @joewallace38 ปีที่แล้ว

      not all 33hp's had a generator. Those that did have the generator mounted on the other side of the carb, attached to the support bracket.

    I have that exact carburetor on a 1959 35 hp Johnson I can’t find the book on eBay yet I’m looking for it

  • @ct1762
    @ct1762 ปีที่แล้ว

    really simple stuff. you were worried about it blowing a cylinder, but where running it far too lean for a while. plain as day it was running lean to me! the instant i noticed something wasnt right i would've backed off the throttle. if anything thats when the damage was done, but these are tuff motors. all in the idle. i will say you CANNOT adjust the slow speed needle properly without the high speed being set 1st.

    Hey hey from Tennessee here took my boat out today SAME EXACT 33 hp engine and acted/sounded very similar....so what I thought to b we ran out of gas ( ended up the fuel line poped off at the tank) but...when it ran down the last few drops of gas I think the mixture became exactly right and for those 5 sec she took of like a rocket..... I'm going to try your tip out..!!!!! Thanks and do you happen to have an extra plastic 33 badge that goes to the bottom front of engine cowl.

      Hey Mark. I hope this will fix your issues. No extra badges kicking around. I actually sold this boat about two weeks ago. I think I have purchased parts from Crowley Marine. They seem to have 99% of the parts available. Just ordered a new fuel pump for my ‘69 Princecraft.

    I put a tiny tach on my 20hp..You could be a big help to me.I just purchased a very neglected 1969 33hp.I am having trouble figuring out why I cannot get my throttle to turn to the start position on the knob.I need more throttle to try and start it.Motor is on a stand in garage.I was thinking the shift lever assy may be bent in slightly causing it to hit the brass piece up in the armature/timing plate prematurely.Any chance of you making a video showing the shift lever and where it makes contact with brass piece under flywheel in the start position?I am not sure what is wrong at this point and have nothing to compare it to.thanks for posting this update.

      wish2fish I think I will be at the cottage this weekend. I will take some pics or shoot a video for you. You cannot shift the gears ( to neutral or reverse ) until the throttle is at idle or below as a safety mechanism. I learned this the hard way. Either way, I will see what I can do for you Cheers
