For me it’s a toss up betw the New York, Pino and the TJ Signature Custom. The TJ was a tad warmer than the other two but the other two had a robust and big fat sound and I could feel the horns powering through. The NY and Pino both sounded really similar with maybe the Pino just a tinge bit edgier. Either way, can’t go wrong with any of the above 3! Will probably come down to price and personal aesthetic preference :) All winners!
I'm so pleased I don't have to choose! you make them all sound so good! If forced to choose I'd go for the Keilwerth which is perhaps unsurprising since my own horn is a Borgani.
Hi Michael If I do nothing about it the E3 is very slightly flat and, strangely, E4 is sharp. Not a problem as it's only really noticeable at slow tempi when there's time to correct the pitch. For reference, my Borgani is the Joe Lovano model. Best wishes, Alexander
The SX90R and the Pino really stood out from the crowd with a character of their own. The rest sounded way too similar - without looking at them it would be hard to tell what instrument you are playing. But with the Pino and SX90R you could definitely tell that the instrument is different IMHO
I agree. I have a ref54 and don’t think that any of these horns other than the Kw have the deep and breadth of sound that I love with the 54. Sellers sound is more intimate. Would love to see you add the new Yanis to the show. More than a few think Yani is tops in tenors.
Interesting range from the clean and lean sounding Yamaha down to a full-bodied range of newcomers from different brands. My favourite ones are lying in the middle with the Selmer 54 on top and the Keilwerth a close second. Both are well rounded packages soundwise but the Selmer really was as I'd expect a Tenor to sound like. One thing ist for sure, though: You make all of them sing! Very nice presentation! 🎉
4:32 SX90R was my favorite with the Pinot 1 a close second. The Ref 54 and JLW Artist were really close and were my combined number 3. Just bought the JLW Artist, now I’m wondering if I should have gotten the Pinot 1 😮
So hard to hear any difference... They all sound good ! On a cosmetic point of view, new York signature first, then the pino. 😀 Thank you very much for this showdown.👍👏👏
I think that you sound great on all but the best ever sound you have on the Sig Custom RAW. I can hear u on stage in my ears blowing the horn in a mic. Wow! Massive big fat sound and nice darkish. Great horn. I may buy that horn as I do love it as well. 👌👍
They're very close. No surprise that I chose the Keilwerth (I play a Keilwerth SX90 and a Martin Committee III myself). I was surprised at how good the Yamaha sounded!
The sx90r sounds amazing, I play on the sx90 I'm borrowing, but when I buy my own tenor the sx90r is a maybe. They're just so expensive. P mauriat system 76 is also a maybe. I have jk, selmer and p mauriat for the brands I'm looking at. I was going to do a Yamaha but I just feel Yamaha is pretty common for saxophones.
I feel like the Pino and the Keilwerth sounded very similar, though I think if I was listening with a blindfold and the recording switched to different horns randomly, I'd have a hard time picking out where you switched them, with the exception of maybe the Yamaha.
Hey Dan! Thank you so much for taking the time to listen so closely to my video! I know what you mean by not being able to tell the difference. I purposely tried to play the melody as exactly as I could on each instrument and I tried to articulate everything the same way also! ❤️🙏🔥🎷
@@jlwoodwinds6394 well you sound great no matter what you play! With your Pino tenor success I can't wait to see you take a run at a Super 20 alto! ;-)
All good tenor sounds. It shows how close in quality today’s technology can create a terrific instrument. Your own is as good as theirs. And they have been manufacturing for practically 100 years. Keilwerth is a cool great looking in your face sound with character The Pino has character. Mix the 2 . Fun to see them all together.
Hey there steve! Thanks so much for listening closely and checking out the video! 🙏 yes definitely things have changed a lot in terms of quality saxophone manufacturing! ❤️🎷
Keilwerth and Selmer were my favourites but all sound pretty close. Depends on personal tastes. I have been using the same horn since 1984. Just so used it Just get one and play it!!!!.
Keilwerth is known for making big, full, rich sounding horns. I have a Shadow Tenor that I have been playing for the past 14 years and it hands down has to be one of, if not the best tenor I have ever owned. I have owned and played many VIs, Yamahas and others and Keilwerth has its own distinct sound that never disappoints in the richness dept
To me, the Selmer Reference 54 and the Yamaha 62 sounded very close to each other. These two horns were sweet and focused. The Keilwerth, Eastman 52, NY Signature, Pino I and TJ Custom sounded very similar to each other, with the Keilwerth being the darkest. Those 5 had big, edgy sounds. The one I least cared about was the Eastman 650. Not a bad horn, but didn't stand out. My favorite sounding one was the Selmer, followed by the Yamaha.
Nice video...absolutely NOT boring🙂...all horns sound very good...hardly to say what's the best sounding horn...but the Selmer isn't the best🤷♂️...I miss a P.Mauriat horn😃...more videos please🙏🎷
Hard to tell on my imac speakers. I think today, I like the sparkle or edge on your Pino and the YTS 62 the most... Maybe? If I lived in NY and did not have little kids to raise, I'd be over to try that Pino. Such a cool looking and sounding horn.
I think it's funny to see all of the different responses! It's hard to compare them all without going head to head, but I think I liked the Yamaha and the NY Custom the best.
Eastman 52nd Street-Instant Gene Ammons! I preferred Eastman and Yamaha horns over the others. But of course i go for the horn that fits my personal aesthetic and needs. Very informative and enjoyable! Now i just read the other comments and everybody has their own preferences. Beautiful! It is a lesson about how different we are from each other aesthetically.
Absolutely agree! This is exactly why I try not to force my opinion on other saxophonists! I definitely have my preferences but I keep them to myself so that I don’t create any kind of bias in the customers mind before they come try everything. I love when people give everything a chance and then choose their favorite!
I have both the Eastmas 52nd st and the Yamaga YTS62 (and a Yamaha YTS23) and as yet have not found a horn I'd swap may Yamahas for. My YTS23 is supposed to be a beginners horn though it's made as good as any (if not better than all bar the very best)
Really interesting comparisons....my fav was the Pino, and a tie between the NY signature and the keilwerth! The Yamaha was a standout but not for any good reason...of course the player makes them all sound good👍
Alla sounds good but I like the Eastman 52nd street and the Yamaha New York Signature the best 👍Not that I could afford one, but I would really like to hear that Eastman with some different mouthpieces and reeds =)
Selmer and Keilwerth.. both the best! All are close and sound great. All sound wonderful on mid and low register, but not all sounds so good on the highs.. (good anyways, yes.. but not SO good like Selmer and Keilwerth)
Thanks for doing this. I own a TJ raw tenor so it was interesting to compare. The Selmer sounded warmest to me, and I did like that. I wouldn’t swap my TJ for any of the others, it has an edgy presentation. However, if I was buying again I would seriously consider the NY and Pino. Please would you do a similar comparison of altos?
I love carrying the Trevor james tenors in my shop! They play very nicely! 🙌🎷❤️ when I get the opportunity to do a similar comparison for altos I will do it!
I must agree with you, the TJ was definitely the brightest, the Selmer had the richest or maybe darkest tone. I play a Yamaha YTS 61 from the 70's. The 62 he played had the least interesting tone which supports my theory that Yamah's are the white bread of the saxophone world. Well made, consistent, easy to play and boring.
@@joeholland9593 I recently watched a professional tenor player play and compare his own Selmer to a Yamaha 280 which belonged to one of his students. The Selmer played as expected - nice and rich sounding. But the Yamaha, despite being a student instrument, had some edgier tones and was much more interesting to me.
