    LONGER BIO
    Saxophonist Bob Reynolds is an in-demand jazz performer, educator, and sideman, as well as a Grammy Award-winning member band Snarky Puppy. Born in Morristown, New Jersey in 1977, Reynolds grew up in Jacksonville, Florida, where he first started playing saxophone at age 13. Although he listened to a range of music as a kid, by his late teens he was a dedicated jazz student. After high school he honed his skills at Boston's Berklee College of Music, where he mentored with George Garzone, Hal Crook, and others. As a leader, he debuted with 2000's The Bob Reynolds Quartet, followed by 2006's Can't Wait for Perfect. That same year, he joined fellow Berklee alum John Mayer's band and spent the next five years with the pop star, touring and appearing on such albums as 2008's Where the Light Is and 2009's Battle Studies.
    In 2013, he returned to his solo work with Somewhere in Between, which reached number one on digital jazz charts. He then made his Snarky Puppy debut appearing on the genre-bending group's 2014 effort, We Like It Here. Two years later he was back with Snarky Puppy for the Grammy Award-winning Culcha Vulcha. In 2017, Reynolds delivered the EP Guitar Band, which featured appearances from Kneebody bassist Kaveh Rastegar as well as fellow Snarky Puppy members Robert "Sput" Searight (drums) and Mark Lettieri (guitar). In 2018 he began touring with 4-time Grammy-winning guitar legend Larry Carlton. He also released the albums Hindsight and Quartet which both landed in the top 10 of Billboard's Jazz charts. A passionate educator, he cofounded an annual summer retreat for adult saxophonists called the Inside:Outside Retreat and he's coached thousands of musicians through his Virtual Studio, a ground-breaking web-based teaching platform he built and has operated since 2010.

    I want to express my gratitude and say a huge THANK YOU to the amazing Bob Reynolds and (Chris Ferdinand). I have no words and I was truly shocked to see this unexpected video review of our saxophone line! Bob you are just such a killer saxophonist and kind person man. You didn’t need to gives us a shoutout like this but I am so very grateful for it, thank you! 🙌I feel so honored that you enjoyed playing on the horn 🥰🙏. The tenor in the video we made for Chris Around 2019 and it is the New York Signature Tenor. Very recently we released the highest quality modern tenor that we can produce which is hand assembled in our shop in New York City called the: Artist Edition Tenor. I’ll send you an email and I’ll try to put one of the Artist Edition Tenors together for you and mail it out to you sometime in the next few months for you to just have some fun on! 🎷🔥🥰

    Over the years I’ve played lots of new horns and my VI and I’d like to emphasize two points: all saxophones play differently, and the “world’s greatest horn” is still no substitute for time spent practicing the horn you currently own. My VI has good things and bad things about it, as do all saxophones. The number one thing that makes me sound better to myself and hopefully my audience, is practice. Just get a good horn you like and practice as much as possible and don’t worry so much about the gear. Your audience will never know what kind of saxophone you play, but they will know if you haven’t practiced.

      100% right sir however, when I look for a new horn I try for the confort, ergonomics, sound, build quality,etc. there are a lot of great saxophones being made today
      for an affordable price compared to vintage Selmers. I own a VI from 1963 and it is my main horn and I would never sell it or trade it, there is something magical about a "good" VI that still have not been replicated and yes, nothing beats practicing no matter what sax.

    Hi Bob, it seems that many players have been changing their Mark VI and Conns for modern instruments such as Eastman, Forestone, Trevor James and alike. I wonder how many of these you have actually tested and for how long because I have the feeling that professional players like yourself would end up sounding the same on any of them in a week of testing... By the way, this is a quote from Brandford Marsalis.... I loved the horn and it's sound, you rock!

    • @bobreynolds
      @bobreynolds  2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I think that's largely true (about sounding same after a week), so for me it's mostly about the feel of the instrument (and of course how it sounds). But I have no plans to switch, so it's more about seeing what's out there that comes close to the vintage horns that would be more affordable for someone looking for their next horn. (I've played the same Mark VI since I was in high school with only a couple deviations).

    @jameslawtonmusic9483 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    This was awesome, Bob. May I ask: how did the horn feel in terms of weight and the angle of the neck compared to your Mark 6?
    I have been playing on my unlacquered Mauriat System 76 for about 10 years, but after borrowing a friends Mark 6 for an extended period, I found it hard going back to the Mauriat. It feels like it weighs a ton and the angle of the neck feels too steep.

    • @bobreynolds
      @bobreynolds  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    The main problem with all those new saxophones is that you don't know how long it will last and stay that way. I only know that I own a Yanagisawa from new since 2005 and it has a great sound, never have failed one day and is very solid. From other brands I hear too often that they last about 10 years and than fall apart from rust and wear.

      If you’re not a classical player, the high F# key is inconvenient, it restricts you because it’s so far off from any altissimo fingerings, and sounds way thinner, and usually sharper, so I’m glad more and more modern horns are taking it away

      I'm sorry you are bothered. It bothers me, too, but it is how it went down. Many moving parts when making an impromptu video playing a stranger's horn in a food refrigerator that you're not quite sure if you'll end up using and not sure what audio's being picked up over the sound of the refrigerator.
