    Can you take a set of headphones and DIY mod it to improve its sound? How far can you go and how much do you need to spend to “fix” some of the issues your headphones might have? Let’s find out together, as I save an old and worn Audio Technica m50 from the bin, and perform an open back conversion to transform its sound. We’ll go over the steps I took and the effect they had over the headphones, so if this sounds interesting, this video is for you!

    that is SO cool! The only criticisms with the M50s are how they aren't that comfortable and how their sounds are clumped up. You fixed both problems and also they look soo good!

      Thank you! I'm glad you liked them! Comfort could be further improved, as the small earpads still hurt my ears after a while (because of my glasses). But I'm planning to try and make them even better in this regard when I get some free time. Anyway, thanks for watching!

    What amazes me is how much better it can sound compared to the original.

    I have some low-end ones, but I thought that this mod could look bad, because it is equalized for that closed acoustic, when putting those holes it could drop some frequencies, greetings from Argentina.

    I tried it on my new ATH M50X. Beautiful sound! I got an AKG K240M 600 ohm to compare and these are my main headphones now. Thanks.

    I have some bluetooth sennheisers at the end of their life (in terms of battery life), and have noisy electronics. Im gonna do a conversion to some IEM cables I have laying around and then experiment with some open back ideas and add some fluff. Mainly get rid of the muddy bass.

    do you have the template for the grills and the screws size used? i have a pair of m50s and i love your open back idea!

      Sure. Here are the grills I made: drive.google.com/drive/folders/1hR0Umf__rvL_QuemDB8EqX-FENfV7cdX . As for the screws, I just picked up some small ones I saved (probably years ago) from God knows what (probably a broken device). If you need to buy some, M1 should be a good size. I updated the description to include a link for a set of assorted screws, maybe you'll find it useful. Hope this helps!

    How did you manage to change headband?

    • @odysseyofcuriosity
      @odysseyofcuriosity  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      To be honest it's not a very easy thing to do, and I feel it didn't turn out so well in my case. I used an X-acto knife to cut the old one away (cutting on the old seams). I then had 2 resulting pieces (the one that's in contact with your head and the one with the ATH logo that goes over the top) which I used as templates to cut some new pieces from an old leather belt. The piece that makes contact with your head is a bit shorter in length, and the two pieces have to be sown together so that the top piece "curls" or "wrinkles" to form a C shaped "tube" which you can slide over the headband assembly. This is the tricky part, especially if you are not good at sewing (I'm not, lol). But you can still get something acceptable, and it's better than having something fill your hair with pleather flakes. Hope this helps! Thanks for watching. I'm glad you enjoyed it!

      @@odysseyofcuriosity Thanks for the answer.
      I actually did the first part the same way and now I'm looking for a durable material to get it to a tailor to sew it on headphones either with sewing machine or by hand. I want to use Dekoni Nuggets on the black plastic part, which previously had the sponge on it, but don't know how to do it properly. I have an idea of using one thin layer of Neoprene foam (to make some sort of mass and isolation)and new sewed material with cut holes for nuggets to easily replace them when they wear out.

    Wouldn't it be actually easy to make removable backplates? Open, closed, semi-open, padded, etc.

    They must sound similar to the Beyerdynamic DT 990 pro, could you compare them? and I subscribe XD

    Funny I had a pair of m40x and wondering, how to get this headphone feel like openback. But my m40 still in pristine condition maybe I will do this in this in incoming years. Quick question m40x can be mod like this right?

    • @odysseyofcuriosity
      @odysseyofcuriosity  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That would be a good idea, no point in potentially ruining a currently nice set of headphones. But it is a very fun thing to try on a dying set :) And to answer your question, yes - any closed back set of headphones can be "opened" - however the end result will very likely differ from model to model. Hope this helps. Enjoy your m40s :D

    Hi,
    I'm looking for an open gaming headset with the best possible microphone.
    Do you have any recommendation for me?

    • @odysseyofcuriosity
      @odysseyofcuriosity  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sure, you can get any good open back studio headphones (I game using my DT990) and get a ModMic to turn them into a headset (not that cheap) or use a separate desk mounted microphone (better if you are on a budget). Hope this helps!

      @odysseyofcuriosity  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      If you did some proper troubleshooting (different source/cable/checked the ear pads are properly installed) and the issue still persists, you have probably been sold a malfunctioning pair. Can you return them and ask for a refund?

  • @ar-visions

    they need to make these in aluminum. so you are angered at drops but not shattered. that said, ATH have the best plastic compared to a sony MDR-V700 that broke from teh sheer act of putting them on an average head for a year

    It Is possibile make foldable a non foldable headphone?

    • @odysseyofcuriosity
      @odysseyofcuriosity  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Anything is possible if you put your mind to it, but it won't be easy, especially if you want to do a clean job. The easiest route could be to transplant an already matching folding headband to your favorite cups (finding the matching pair will be the problem here). Otherwise, if you have a 3D printer around together with some modelling skills you could, of course, design the appropriate parts to do the conversion while keeping parts of the original headband. Hope this helps!
