In terms of comfort, they are not at all identical: the dt 770 has a significantly greater clamping force on the head than the dt990, the reason is that this ensures its sealing against external noise as a closed headset must make, but the counterpart is more discomfort, especially over long listening segments. But it is true, as you say, that after a few weeks the headband of the headset will take the shape of your head better, will relax. This is also true for the sound: you should know that the diaphragm membrane inside the headphones requires a few hours of listening at a slightly high volume to break in (let's say 100 hours of various music , with bass, etc.), this will relax it and thus offer a much more flexible sound than when they are new, the result will thus correspond to what is intended auditorily for these headphones by the manufacturer : we should not rely at all on the first days of listening. The fact that the dt 770 is a closed headphone also gives a feeling of confinement, even a slight feeling of suffocation, over long listening times (but obviously these last points are subjective). This feeling does not exist on the dt 990. You are right to say that wearing glasses with these 2 headphones is easy, but the movement of the glasses rods on the ears (naturally caused by simple facial tics, or simply because the glasses always inevitably move away from the top of the nose, headphones or not) creates a small squeaking noise in the ears in the dt 990. So avoid moving the rods while listening, the best is to enlarge the headband of the headphones when you have them on your head to replace the glasses rods, then resume listening (I do this often). The 250 ohm models may require you to turn the volume up to almost maximum, which can be solved by plugging them into a quality external DAC: for example the iFi Zen Dac AIR (British company) costs only $73 US dollars. However if you have a MacBook M2 or M3 (Air or Pro model) you won't even need an external DAC and will have no problem with the 250 ohms, because these MacBooks all have a headphone output by default that is compatible with high impedance headphones (I have a MacBook Air M2). And the sound is excellent. 250 ohms is better than 80 ohms, I have owned the DT 990 pro in 80 and 250 ohms and I opted for the 250 ohms. The difference is that when you turn the volume up significantly you will have a more assured preservation of the quality of definition, you will have the same clear breadth of sound. 80 ohms may compress a little at very high volumes to protect against the tiny risk of saturation, but this nuance between the two is extremely subtle, perhaps even imperceptible at bottom for many users. As for the sound itself, I quite disagree when you say that these are bright or high-pitched headphones. It depends on so many factors: the ear habit that has developed previously with other types of headphones, the type of audio material (difference between musical genres, voice narration in news broadcasts, etc.). Every time I have done listening tests with Sennheiser HD 600, 650, etc.) I have found the sound veiled each time. To use a pictorial description of my listening experience with Sennheiser, it is as if I have each time had the desire to move these layers of veils with the urgent need to finally reach the sound source stripped of all these filters (as if I wanted to break down a door that locked me in). I experienced a bit of the same phenomenon of frustration with the Mezze, even the 109 pro. With my Beyerdynamic dt 990 pro, I don't have this veiled intermediate at all, I almost have the impression of reaching the sound "as it is". This sound without a veil of distance is what you probably call "brilliant" or "high", while for me it is the sound that delivers a natural, close, intimate acoustic. To say that the DT 770 and 990 are "very brilliant" and that the DT990 are even more "piercing" is, in my opinion, a completely unfounded estimate. On this subject, I invite everyone to watch a video entitled "Beyerdynamic DT990 Are Scientific Perfection". Also this other video with the title "beyerdynamic DT 990 PRO Studio Headphones Review". Finally, you can also listen to this video which is French, the original title in French is "Quel CASQUE CHOISIR pour son PIANO NUMERIQUE (+ mon casque parfait)". The english translation tool of youtube for subtitles will work without problem. The topic we are interested in starts at 4:50 minutes in the video about the question open headphones / closed headphones. The DT 990 pro will be commented not a lot of time after. In addition, this video which very much matches my point of view, its title is "Open-Back vs Closed-Back Headphones for Music Producers, Audiophiles, & Engineers". As I said above, you obviously have to run your headphones in for at least a hundred hours (and with a fairly high volume) to achieve the full sound performance promised by the DT 990 pro, in order to release the flexibility of the internal membrane, because it is not necessarily yet relaxed when completely new. This gives fluidity to the mediums and indisputably makes it possible to eliminate the initial rigidity. For example, I had clearly perceived the moment when the membrane of the DT900 ProX (another beyerdynamic model) had become stiffer, and clearly heard the gain obtained. I would point out that my DT 990 pro did indeed have a little brilliance when i bought it, I could hear it on certain pronunciations of consonants for example in interviews (very lightly), but this has now completely disappeared with the running-in. You also say that acoustic instruments sound better on the dt 770, but for me the opposite is true. For listening to classical music (piano solo, quartets, trios, orchestral works), I can confirm that the DT990 pro are clearly preferable and authentic in instrumental restitution: instruments with the 770 have more added resonance and are less natural, less ample and less clearly detailed You are right to say that for a closed headset the dt 770 pro has a very convincing soundstage that is surprising. 2 other points of disagreement: 1) We can't say that people who will be in the same room as us will clearly hear the sound coming out of our open dt 990 pro headphones. Yes, some muffled sound will come out a little (it's an open headphone), but nothing disturbing. Unless you listen to music like Rap at very high volume, but otherwise no. 2) I very often listen to old jazz recordings from the 1920s, 1930s, 1940s, and also old archives with the phonograph-type background sound of the time, but I don't find at all that the dt 990 pro highlights these sound defects, it doesn't hide them, it's very different (that's their charm). The sound of the dt 990 pro for archives is excellent.

I'm kinda late to the party, but I'm surprised you didn't mention that the impedance rating of the headphones make all the difference in how easy/hard they are to drive. For example, the DT 770 Pro comes in an 80 ohm, which (unlike your 250 ohm model) is very easy to get a good volume on the vast majority of interfaces. It makes no sense to buy a 250 ohm headphone when you own consumer-level electronics or a budget audio interface (like your Behringer unit). Some headphone makers are even making 32 ohm versions of their headphones, so that they can be powered by mobile devices like phones, iPads, etc. Bottom line, the lower the impedance, the less power needed to drive the headphones. 250 ohm headphones are a holdover from pro studios of DECADES ago where everything in the studio required higher voltage, so headphones of the time were designed so they wouldn't get overloaded when plugged in to, say, the console/mixer. Also, dedicated headphone amps were a mainstay of pro studios, but are simply not needed anymore for bedroom producers who aren't doing live tracking with multiple musicians needing different monitor mixes. Of course an headphone amp will solve your level problem with high impedance headphones, but why buy high impedance phones in the first place if your audio interface can't drive them?
