    I grow micro cruciferous greens and pea sprouts on a shelf in my dining room with a cheap DIY self-watering method--no dirt to attract pesky gnats. It's much less expensive than buying fresh greens and much less work than rinsing sprouts twice a day. I plant and forget them until I eat them ten days later. Can't get any more local than my dining room.

    Your meal prepping course was a game changer for me! And I save soooo much money now 🥰 I actually get my groceries on line now and get them delivered. This stops me buying anything that I do not need. I meal plan before ordering and shop my pantry too. This is by far the best tip! 👌 I also grow a lot of my own veg 🥒🍠🥦 and have recipes on repeat

    For those that like canned beans beware: I started weighing how much bean is in the can.The most shocking one I found was 7 and 8 oz of chickpeas in a can of “15” ounces

      There has been a lot of hidden shrinkflation - chips will say 200 grams but will actually be 170. It's almost worth getting a suitcase weight hook and re-purposing it for the heavier stuff that may not actually be as advertised.
      You can buy it and report it if you don't open it - they can get some nasty fines for this stuff.

    I appreciate a video that shows Canadian pricing. Many TH-cam videos use US pricing and there really is quite a big difference.

    • @LetsEatPlants
      @LetsEatPlants  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      There really is! As I’ve lived both places (and still have family in the US) it’s definitely interesting to compare.

  • @WholeBibleBelieverWoman

    It's always worth it to compare prices on sizes. For instance at one store, the biggest bags of frozen broccoli costs MORE per ounce than the smallest bags. The smaller bags are not only less expensive, more convenient overall on top of that. It's always a shock when the smaller size is less expensive, but it happens! At the same store roasted peanuts are cheaper by the ounce in the 1 lb. jar than the 2 lb. jar. I used to always buy the 2-lb. jar assuming it would be the best deal. I was wrong!

    All good tips here, especially because they're about knowing how to buy rather than what plant food you buy, so they're widely applicable, nice one. I’ve just started getting Wonky Boxes (New Zealand), I love knowing that this produce is now being used instead of rejected, it's nice stuff too. Also I end up eating more fruit and veg, which is a surprise. Another useful topic.

    I love your tips! Another good reason to sprout at home is that store-bought sprouts often have salmonella or E. coli. :( In fact, Dr Greger cites studies that state do not buy store-bought sprouts for that reason.
    We sprout at home using a plastic cup-in-cup method with the Easy Sprout Sprouter cup. I get mine on amazon. No glass, no tipping, easy to rinse and store. Usually, the first few days I am sprouting I'll keep them in the fridge overnight. Then as they develop leaves I put them near a window. I also use a 3% peroxide solution straight on the seeds the first overnight soak (no water) to sterilize. They have smaller screens you can put on the bottom of the cups for small seeds like broccoli. I love glass and mason jars (for everything) but rinsing, draining, tilting and taking up valuable counter space not as easy as the Easy Sprout Sprouter. I also use a mini salad spinner for my final sprouts to get the hulls or unsprouted seeds removed.

    I find it helpful to organize my shopping list according to the stores we plan to shop. Rather than having to visually scroll up and down a list for different items in different stores, I shop one store at a time and save a bit of time. I also use notes on my phone for my list and begin compiling it weeks ahead when I spot things we've run out of. Now I just need to use your meal planning tip to avoid waste.

    Excellent 12 money saving tips video Maddie. Yes food costs are increasing ridiculous and even the way we prepare/cook food is affected with the cost of energy increasing so energy efficiency appliances help for example instant pot/ multi cooker, airfryer or microwave rather than a cooker/stove top/oven. Love 🥰 the video and love 💕 Maddie & Q.

    My local grocery store sells some vegetables prepackaged, and the weight is always at least the labeled weight, but sometimes much more. For example, I bought a package of four portabello mushrooms that was labeled 14 ounces but I picked the package with the largest mushrooms and it weighed 22 ounces. The same with yellow and green squash, sometimes broccoli, etc. sometimes 2x the labeled weight.

    • @LetsEatPlants
      @LetsEatPlants  ปีที่แล้ว

      Wow that's so interesting!! So do you pay the labeled weight price or the actual weight price? If you ending paying less that's a great win!

    • @KitKatUniverse
      @KitKatUniverse ปีที่แล้ว

      @@LetsEatPlants I pay the labeled weight, so essentially I can be paying half the price per pound. For example this morning I paid $4 for 18 ounces of yellow squash instead of $4 for the labeled 8 ounces.

    I need to start making more stuff at home and not buy for convenience. Beans are a big expense for me. I have an instant pot but am just overwhelmed with how long to cook? Do I soak first? Also I have heard if u don't cooked kidney beans right they can make u sick. Is this true. They ate our favorite bean. I want to batch cook all beans and freeze. One day I plan to learn to can them. Love your videos.

    • @LetsEatPlants
      @LetsEatPlants  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks for sharing, Paula! Don't be too intimidated to start cooking your own beans from scratch. It's super easy! This is a very helpful guide for cook times, that I refer to often: instantpot.com/instantpot-cooking-time/#tab-id-3 Beans are always a 1:3 ratio (bean:water) so usually I do 1.5 cups beans + 4.5 cups water and then whatever time is indicated on the timetable (that will vary depending on the type of bean). You might find this video helpful as well: th-cam.com/video/zNeMfMySSfM/w-d-xo.html 😊😊 I don't usually soak my beans first, but you definitely can.. it will help them cook faster, and the Instant Pot cooking timetable has the "soaked bean" cook times as well.
      You're right about the kidney beans, but they would have to be verrrry undercooked to make you sick, and basically they would be inedible! You're not at any risk if you cook them for 15-20 mins in the Instant Pot. Storing any cooked beans in the freezer is a great idea as well! Let them fully cool a couple hours and then put them in the freezer, make sure you leave some space at the top of the tupperware as they might expand a bit in the freezer. Feel free to DM me on Instagram @lets.eat.plants if you have any more questions!! Happy to help! 🤗💕🌱
