Great tips! To speed up pressure, you can set your cook time while you prepare ingredients. I also use heated water from my electric kettle any time I need to add water for cooking. Cuts the time significantly.

I've used my IP for about 3 years now, and today I learned I know next to nothing about it at all. lol Love the extra silicone ring idea; customizing the buttons(!); the lid holder built into the handles(🤯); getting a second pot for heavy-use days; the steam diverter...dang, pretty much everything you mention in this is gold. Thank you so much for this!
I'm so glad to hear that it was helpful!! Hahaha I was the same way using my IP but didn't know all the hacks, which is why I knew I had to make this video once I learned them 😄 You're very welcome, and hope you enjoy using your IP even more now!
Soaking beans overnight and then changing the water to fresh is a good idea to do when you can -- because that will help relieve a lot of the phytates that block absorption of minerals and other nutrition. And of course then the beans will also cook much faster (AND be less gassy). Thanks for your helpful video!
That's what I've done since I first started cooking, about 50 years ago. LOL My mother taught me that trick; with 8 kids and not 8 dollars, she had to be creative in cooking, and beans were a staple in our house. She was very, very good at cooking them!
I’m a fan of soaking beans as well because I really suffer a lot with gas problems if they aren’t soaked. My problem is that most of the recipes for instant pot are for unsoaked beans and I don’t know how to adjust the time for the soaking.
@@pjschmid2251 I had that same problem, especially b/c I have a diff size than the standard 6qt recipes online. I had to experiment with soaked beans. It only took 3 or 4 times each type of bean for me to get my own understanding of the perfect # of mins for each. Sometimes the second try for that specific bean would be months later, so make sure you take notes each time.

When steaming veggies I do throw in boiling water from the kettle and that does speed up the process. OMG I didn’t realize that you could change the presets on the preset buttons. That’s brilliant what a game changer. I keep changing things around for rice and I could’ve saved that under rice. 😲
Wow am I happy to have found u this morning. I am going to store to purchase steel cut oats n have no idea how long to cook them. Just got my pot & LOVE IT. i would have started off with 5 minutes. O HOW WRONG I WOULD HAVE BEEN! 🥴😁😄😅 thanks for your help.😘
Oh that’s great, so glad it was helpful! I think even cooked for 5 mins they would have been ok… maybe just a bit over cooked, but some people may prefer that consistency. It also depends if they’re quick cooking steel cut or regular so make sure you double check the package. 😊😊

Hahaha yes, good point about it being an accessory trap! And yesss the steam trap at the back was not a good find after a year of forgetting about it. 😂😂
This is the best instant pot tips video ever! Wow I didn't know over half of the tips. I threw away the plastic steamer holder things as at the time I thought they were part of the packaging 🤦♀️ Tip: never soak mung beans before adding to instant pot.. they turn to mush haha
Love my instant pot. I meal prep potatoes and make a delicious Moroccan lentil soup. The steam diverter I bought does not work so I put a tea towel over the nozzle when releasing pressure. I have an older model..no steam trap or side hole/handles for lid.
I used to do that too until I read it's dangerous! 😥 This is what I read: "Not only can this damage your pot, but it can also create an unsafe vacuum effect, causing steam to be sucked back into the cooker." So I stopped doing it after that. I think it's suggested to release in short bursts of steam instead. 😊
Love my IP! I didn't know that you could change and save the preset buttons though....I'll have to look into that for sure. The Slow Cook button is super easy, I've used that a lot and it's nice to not have to have another device on my countertop. One tip for that is to make sure you pay attention to the pressure before you start the slow cooking because if you want it to be on low, you have to change it to low,. I've made that mistake before and thought I was cooking something on low for 6 hours but it was on high and pretty much done after 2 hours....thankfully I was home and caught it.
Oh yes the presets are so helpful! And thank you so much for the tip about the slow cooking! I was wondering if low and high were a big difference for it. Very good to know! 🤗🤗
💚💚💚 excellent video and information. So well organized. I need to start using more of the functions on my Instapot. Oh wow, so cool that you travel with your Instant Pot and air fryer! 🤩🤩 Must be so handy having them with you. Really glad you enjoyed the video as well! 🤗
Enjoyed hearing your tips, especially about the preset buttons, and the steam clean, and the bread dough proofing. Also have tried cooking beans on the stove with varying success, so I wasn't expecting great results. Every time has been a success with the Instant Pot especially with chickpeas. Great topic, learned something, thanks.
Great tips! I really like the idea of using the other functions as bookmarks. I'm going to start doing that! How long do you cook your white rice and what setting? Thanks for the video, Maddie! 💕
Glad you enjoyed Laura! For white rice I just use the rice button. So 1:1 ratio and then the rice button automatically cooks it on low pressure (I believe it’s for 12 minutes) but it should be automatic. 😄😄
Great video! I was given mine as it was too heavy for my mom. I have only made hard boiled eggs with it so far and they peel nice and easy. I have been a bit intimidated by it but want to use it more. Thanks!
So glad you enjoyed, Michelle! Oh yes, totally understand the intimidation. I felt that way too at first! The more you use it the more you'll get comfortable. Feel free to message me if you ever have any questions! 😊😊
Maddie your videos are always so informative and helpful! Can you tell me how much quick cooking steel cut oats and water you use for your 1 min preset? I've never found any instructions for the quick cooking so I never knew! Thanks for sharing about the presets too. I've owned an instant pot for many many years and never felt like I was using it to its full potential. Lol
Aww thank you, Donna! 🤗🤗 So glad it was helpful. I always do a 1:3 grain to water ratio for those oats. (Usually I do 2 cups oats + 6 cups water) Comes out perfectly every time! My husband likes it with a bit of a thinner consistency though, so he adds plant milk. If you find it too thick, you can add more water, maybe 1/2 cup more. Enjoy! 😄
Thank you so much! Another excellent video - I'm getting into my IP much more these days. Doesn't it make a great difference when you cook beans in it? You don't even have to soak some of them! I will check out those IP recipes, and I'd also welcome a future video with any good recipes you have for crockpot cooking, because that is soooo much cheaper than any other way of cooking, except microwave cooking, apparently. And we're all trying to save a little on energy costs these days! 🙂
So glad you enjoyed, Amanda! 🤗🤗 Yes, such a world of difference! I love not having to buy canned beans anymore. 😃 I wish I knew some crockpot recipes... I'm not as familiar with it! I might have to convert some to slow cooker Instant Pot recipes this winter. 🤔
I tried every method to de-stink my sealing ring… hot soapy water, vinegar, and even bleach did nothing. However leaving the ring outside in the sun worked!

@@DoDayDem I haven't had any problems with the sauté function. I do like to adjust between low and medium when I'm sauteing though. And definitely wait for it to get hot first! 😊
I have trouble getting whole Sweet Potatoes and Russet Potatos. The instant pot recipe on app always under cooks. Would love to see a video on this one.
I purchased my Instantpot when it first came out and it does not have all these fancy settings as the newer versions have. So I use mine mainly for pressure cooking Potatoes and Beets. Will start to use the rice settings, though, thanks to your information. How long and with which setting shall I cook my beans please?
Hi there! For beans I highly recommend following this guide: instantpot.com/instantpot-cooking-time/#tab-id-3 For your instant pot you can use Manual (High Pressure) + whichever cook time is recommended by the Instant Pot timetable. I also do a natural release for beans. I always use a 1:3 (bean to water) ratio and then the cook times will just depend on which type of bean you are using. If your beans are older, use the longer of the cook times. So for example, if the timetable says 15-20 minutes, cook for 20. If you plan to use the beans in another dish (and therefore "cooking" again... like using them in chili or something like that), then use the shorter of the cook times. If I use the shorter of the cook times and they are still too hard when done cooking, I set Manual, High pressure again for 2-3 more minutes. You might also find this video helpful: th-cam.com/video/zNeMfMySSfM/w-d-xo.html 😊
One thing that I’ve heard that it’s better to use the slow cook function for rather than pressure cook is for delicate beans like white beans, navy beans etc. Pressure cooking them tends to make them break apart because the skins aren’t very strong. But if you slow cook them they come out creamy and perfect and most of the skins are intact.
Oh thank you! That's a great tip! 🙏🏻 I always do my beans with the pressure cook function because it's faster, but I might have to give slow cook a try. 🤩
I’ve slow cooked beans in 2 different crock pots and they were always crunchy, even after adding tons of water. They are always perfect in the Instant Pot.
Help! I made a delicious potato soup with ham recipe I want to make again. When I released it I had liquid everywhere!! I waited until morning to clean, tried running it, then trying both natural and quick release, but no steam came out. Help. What should I do? My model is different. The release button on the side of both the large button and a chrome smaller button. Does that different techniques?? Thanks for your help, I’m off to watch you beginner video. I want to become an expert.
Hi Connie! Sorry, I am not sure why that would have happened. Do you know the name of your model? Have you thoroughly cleaned the area where the steam comes out of the lid?
@@LetsEatPlants Yes! For my cool kitchen, the only way I have success in proofing dough is using my Instant Pot, set to Yogurt, Low, for a maximum of 2 hours. I coat the inside of the liner with a small amount of oil, and use the glass lid (I have the Instant Pot lid, which fits perfectly). This enables me to see how the dough is rising. If you do use the regular lid while proofing dough, make sure the pressure valve is set to venting, otherwise you will get a pressure buildup and will have to wait for the pressure to drop before you can get the lid off.
Great question! I usually just use a damp dish towel and scrunch it into the groove... but just the other day I heard the tip to use an old toothbrush!! I thought that was a pretty good idea. 🤩🤩
@@davidthescottishvegan Can’t say for sure as I haven’t tried them but I’m sure there are some out there that are also great! Maybe someone will comment here on another brand they love. 🤗

Good question! Press the “Porridge” button and use the minus button to bring the time down to 1 minute. Once it beeps & changes to “On”, you can press “Cancel”. The 1 minute will be saved automatically and will appear next time you press porridge. Essentially the IP just remembers all your previously used time numbers. 😊😊
@@LetsEatPlants Hey, sorry it took me a couple of days to get back. My model is a Pro Crisp and has 2 lids, one for pressure cooking and another lid for air frying. Pretty sure I can adjust the temperature for a few functions.
Good question! Press whichever button you want to use as a preset, let's say the “Porridge” button for example. Use the plus or minus button to bring the time to however many minutes you want. Once it beeps & changes to “On”, you can press “Cancel”. The minutes will be saved automatically and will appear next time you press Porridge. Essentially the IP just remembers all your previously used time numbers. 😊😊
You can check out my video on how I cook brown rice here: th-cam.com/video/EMGYvTFBsRs/w-d-xo.html 😊 I usually do 1:1.5 grain to water ratio and cook on high pressure for 22 minutes. Enjoy!
No need to buy a branded Instant Pot lid at all .. the pots are “regulation “ size so if making a huge pot of chilli and using only some, one of your regular pots will have a lid that can go on too, for fridge storage.
@@LetsEatPlants yes I saw that but as you did mention buying an extra liner/pot from Instant Pot I didn’t want people to think they EVER needed to buy a matching storage lid! Save your money and buy a 3 quart IP as well ;)

I cook something with canned crushed tomatoes to get rid of any stains in my instant pot. Leaves it shiny clean.
@@Js20639 Great tip! I'll have to try that. Thanks!
@@LetsEatPlants Bar Keepers Friend for the win.
Thank you! Makes me feel more prepared to invest in an Instant Pot~
You're so welcome! It's a wonderful tool. I've used it nearly every week for the past 4+ years. 😄😄
I like using it as a slow cooker for soups. I sauté my ingredients in it and then add broth and whatever else I need. Minimal clean up too!
Good tip! I need to try using it for some soups this fall/winter. How long do you usually cook for on slow cook?
Don’t you find it doesn’t sauté very well
@@DoDayDem instant pot sauté setting to sauté then switch it to slow cook once all the ingredients are in!
@@DoDayDem I haven't had any problems with the sauté function. I do like to adjust between low and medium when I'm sauteing though. And definitely wait for it to get hot first! 😊
@@DoDayDem It sautés on the “more” setting very well and I love that the very high sides mean no splatter!
I have trouble getting whole Sweet Potatoes and Russet Potatos. The instant pot recipe on app always under cooks. Would love to see a video on this one.
Great suggestion! I’ll add it to the list. 😊
Concise and thorough - fantastic video! Liked and subscribed 😊 Thank you!
So glad you enjoyed and welcome! 😊😊
Soak longer, and cook longer, than you first think ;)
Great video with lots of info! Thank you
So glad it was helpful! 🤗🤗
@@LetsEatPlants Helen Rennie did a very informative video on TH-cam on this topic th-cam.com/video/aiUcygy6W_s/w-d-xo.html
I’ve slow cooked beans in 2 different crock pots and they were always crunchy, even after adding tons of water. They are always perfect in the Instant Pot.
Thanks! Great points here!
Thank you! 😊😊
Absolutely love the IP
It's the best! 🤗
Great tips! I didn’t see the lasagna soup recipe ?? Am I overlooking it? Thanks
Oops I may have forgotten to add it to the description box! Here it is 🤩 www.veganricha.com/instant-pot-lasagna-soup-vegan/#recipe
Great information 😊
Thanks Wendy! 🤗🤗
Very helpful info thank you very much❤️😁👌👌👌
So glad it was helpful! 🤗🤗
I use a slow cooker liner in my IP.
Sounds great! Where did you get it Sue?
I've been told that using the IP for dough can, at times, make it very difficult to get the lid off.
Oh thank you for sharing! 🙏🏼🙏🏼 Perhaps using a regular glass lid like i showed in this video would be better for dough proofing.
Oh perfect, thank you for letting us know! 🤗🤗
What is best way to clean the ridge between the pot and outside . It collects food and gets gross !
Great question! I usually just use a damp dish towel and scrunch it into the groove... but just the other day I heard the tip to use an old toothbrush!! I thought that was a pretty good idea. 🤩🤩
Those foam craft brushes you get at the dollar store work great!
I have never used the delay function on mine. I’m going to h e to try it. 😉
It’s so helpful!! 🤗🤗
I love my Pressure Cooker 💕
Aren’t they great!? 🤗🤗
Can plant-based milk be used to make yogurt?
Yep! I find soy works best, but I’ve heard other plant milks work as well. 😊😊 Check out this video: th-cam.com/video/Ikfkqrt69rM/w-d-xo.html
To get the most out of your instant pot You should cook vegan, or vegetarian beef, or even omnivorous chicken
Love to cook vegan meat in my instant pot! Seitan cooks perfectly in there. 😊
Excellent video Maddie but I am considering buying a multi cooker.
Thanks David! They are a very handy tool!! 😄
@@LetsEatPlants Are alternative brands of multi cookers worth while over the instant pot brand?
@@davidthescottishvegan Can’t say for sure as I haven’t tried them but I’m sure there are some out there that are also great! Maybe someone will comment here on another brand they love. 🤗
I have looked all over Internet and TH-cam no success - Can you create a video on canning white potatoes?
Sorry Dawn, I don't know anything about canning!
Have you done a yogurt video?
Yes! You can check it out here th-cam.com/video/Ikfkqrt69rM/w-d-xo.html 😄😄
What about burn notice I get it when things stick I get when they don't it is very frustrating.
Hi Nicky! The burn warning will usually come on if there's not enough liquid. What are you cooking when you get this warning?
I use slow cooking button for BBQ jackfruit 😁
Ooo good idea! 😃😃
Beef stew.. extra gorgeous slow cooked ..
bone broth
Thank you for sharing! I’m vegan so I don’t eat beef stew or bone broth, but I do like to make bean stew & veggie broth! I will have to try some using the slow cook function. 😊
how do you preset a temp--say 1 min for porridge
Good question! Press the “Porridge” button and use the minus button to bring the time down to 1 minute. Once it beeps & changes to “On”, you can press “Cancel”. The 1 minute will be saved automatically and will appear next time you press porridge. Essentially the IP just remembers all your previously used time numbers. 😊😊
I use the slow cook function after I get the burn message because I'm too lazy to try to figure out what went wrong. LOL
Oh wow I’m surprised that works! 😂😂 Good tip!
How do you make yoghurt in an insta pot that does not have a yoghurt button?
Good question! Does your instant pot have another function that runs at 110F? Which model do you have?
@@LetsEatPlants Hey, sorry it took me a couple of days to get back. My model is a Pro Crisp and has 2 lids, one for pressure cooking and another lid for air frying. Pretty sure I can adjust the temperature for a few functions.
@@mattdonalds7007 Oh great! If you can adjust the temperature, just set it to 110F. That’s the temp that the yogurt setting uses. 😊
The instructions say that you don’t use the gasket ring at all when making yogurt
Good point! I've done it both with the regular lid and with the glass lid. Both work fine. 😊
How do we save a preset ??
Good question! Press whichever button you want to use as a preset, let's say the “Porridge” button for example. Use the plus or minus button to bring the time to however many minutes you want. Once it beeps & changes to “On”, you can press “Cancel”. The minutes will be saved automatically and will appear next time you press Porridge. Essentially the IP just remembers all your previously used time numbers. 😊😊
How about brown Rice?
You can check out my video on how I cook brown rice here: th-cam.com/video/EMGYvTFBsRs/w-d-xo.html 😊 I usually do 1:1.5 grain to water ratio and cook on high pressure for 22 minutes. Enjoy!
thx u 🙏
This is similar to Indian pressure cookers which we’ve used for half a century
Awesome!
No need to buy a branded Instant Pot lid at all .. the pots are “regulation “ size so if making a huge pot of chilli and using only some, one of your regular pots will have a lid that can go on too, for fridge storage.
The ones in this video are not Instant Pot branded. 😄😄 Just ones I bought separately and found fit well.
@@LetsEatPlants yes I saw that but as you did mention buying an extra liner/pot from Instant Pot I didn’t want people to think they EVER needed to buy a matching storage lid! Save your money and buy a 3 quart IP as well ;)
@@theresadoll5374 Hahaha ok 😄👍🏼

@@ceepark114 😱😱😱 Interesting! Which model do you have?
I find that eggs boiled in a InstantPot peel more easily than eggs cooked by other methods
No idea why, comment anyone?
With an instant pot you can basically leave the home without any problem.
So true!! I love that about it. 🤗🤗
“Instant”. Sad that we have to explain a pressure cooker is not instant🤦♀️
Hahahaha true! Although sometimes I wonder why Instant Pot chose that for their name. 🤔🤔
Instant vs old school cooking methods the Instant pot is much faster. Get real
Much faster yes! Just not instant. 😄
Great tips !
