    New Subscriber. A couple of questions on environment: you don’t appear to use any form of dust collection; why is that? Additionally, why do you use protective glasses on some projects and a protective helmet on others? Brief back story: 45 years ago I was going to train as a carpenter, but the funding for the apprenticeship fell through, so my career took a different path. Now I’ve just taken early retirement, so I’m going to finally live my dream of working with wood. Putting together a work space and equipment at this very moment, so any help on the above questions would be so helpful. Just one more thing, if I’m not being too cheeky, what brand of chisels would you recommend? Keep on creatively turning my friend because you have a hungry and appreciative new subscriber. You are a true natural with the camera!

    Martin, I feel I may be being drawn i to coloring although just getting good any lathe time would be good just now.
    I'm interested in your chuck jaws used for this one. Are they simply parallel but with gripping ridges/teeth? they look very grippy and reassuring!

    Hi Martin, could you tell me if you apply sanding sealer before the colours,or go straight
    Into it with the colours please.

    • @msabansmith
      @msabansmith  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Carol. I always put colour on before the sealer to give the colours the best chance of soaking into the wood.

    • @carolbaxter3938
      @carolbaxter3938 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      M. Saban Smith Woodturning I’m sure you can tell I’m new to this but how do
      you stop the colours from bleeding into an area that you don’t want it to go.
      Sorry to be a nuisance.

    • @msabansmith
      @msabansmith  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good question. Most of the time, I go to colour an entire piece. It is difficult to keep colours from bleeding on a medium that is made up of tubes.
      Options you can try would be a stencil, masking tape or sealing the part you don't want colour.
      In the past, I've used a stencil/mask to cover the non-coloured area and then used an airbrush to apply the colour.

    Very good. I particularly like the top of the piece where the lighter colours let the wood come through a little more. I was not liking the base until you removed it right at the end, thank goodness. I really need to be more adventurous on light wood with colour, perhaps with a piece of holly which you know I have.

    Hello Martin, another very interesting video. I would like to know why you changed over to the Axminster lathe, rather than use the Nova Galaxie? What were your issues with the Galaxie, there had to be something as the Galaxie was just new to you?

    • @msabansmith
      @msabansmith  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Len. I'm pleased that you enjoyed the video. I am using an Axminster lathe now....but still have the Galaxi - it's just in a different position in

    • @lenmullin3216
      @lenmullin3216 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes Martin, I well aware that you still have the Galaxie lathe, I'm just wondering why you're using the Axminster over the Galaxie. The Axminster is now in the main turning location for filming the videos, so obviously you prefer the Axminster over the Nova Galaxie. Why?

  • @DrawingWithFire
    @DrawingWithFire 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    Great video Martin! 😆 The base came out absolutely beautiful, I love the colors!! I use polyacrylic varnish to seal my flat panel burnings on birch or basswood. Based on how you sealed the vase with the Danish oil, spray sealer, and then your sealer; how much of a difference will I see with the intrinsic colors?? I had planned on using an outdoor polyacrylic to seal with the intrinsic colors to protect...but now I am wondering if I should at the very least use the Danish oil first. I do love when the beauty of the grain shows, but I want my burning and soon the colors to be the main focus. What do you think??

    • @msabansmith
      @msabansmith  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Valerie. Thanks for your comment. The oil is an optional step really. A sealer will enhance the colour too, but not quite as much as using the oil, too. So long as the colours go on first, and then sealed, you should be absolutely fine.
      Before using the on a 'proper' piece of your burned work, do a couple of quick test pieces and use my technique and then yours, and go with whichever you prefer!
      All the best,
      Martin

    • @DrawingWithFire
      @DrawingWithFire 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Martin! 😆 I will definitely be doing a color swatch birch board over burning for all of the colors. I will include the Danish oil in at least one block of each color, as well as what I usually do. I can't wait to get the colors. 😃

    • @DrawingWithFire
      @DrawingWithFire 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Another few questions...lol. 😆 Now in painting & in general there is a "fat over lean" rule. Meaning oil based products can go over water base, but water base can't go over oil. Does this rule apply with wood finishes too?? What was the sealant you sprayed over the Danish oil, and is it water or oil based? I was wondering if once the Danish oil soaks in and dries, it is no longer an issues as to what is applied next. I tend to use all water-based products, so this will be the 1st time I deal with oil.
      P.S. Last week I mispronounced "Hampshire Sheen" when I was talking to hubby. He heard "hampster sheen" and once he said that out loud it stuck...lmbo! 😂 So now that is what Hampshire sheen is called in this house. I thought this might give you a chuckle. 😃

    First of your work is wow. This may be a stupid question but why don't guys make more wood cups or chalice's?

    • @msabansmith
      @msabansmith  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Japone. Thanks for asking...it's a question of personal choice what you turn a lot of. I like goblets and chalices, but choose to turn more technical projects most of the time for videos. Off camera though, I turn all manor of things that go up for sale.
      Hope that helps,
      Martin

    Great colouring, shading and blending. What spray sealer were you using? My wipe on cellulose sealer does tend to pull some colour back out from my work. Had a great recent result 'clouding' black and blue on a sycamore platter after watching a past episode. Regards

      Hi Gary. Thanks - Loving blending by hand - much more...um, 'personal', if that makes sense. A wipe on sealer will almost always take off some colour, so you're not doing anything wrong. A couple, or three coats of a spray sealer will help greatly keeping it on. The sealer I used in this project is a satin sealer from PlastiKote.
      All the best,
      Martin
      PS Black and blue is a brilliant combo - bet it looks awesome!

    Odd to see you use a power sander. Was it just for the vid or have your begun to use it more often? Love the vids, thanks for sharing your expertise.

      Hi Michael. Thanks. It depends on how pushed I am for time as to whether or not I power-sand. Still prefer doing it with a rotary sander though.

    This is the video that could get me into colouring. That is beautiful. Is that an Axminster lathe you are on now?

    😮 Martin, I have watched you working, I am in awe of your skill and confused. You spray black on some projects and then sand right back - why? Secondly you again use black, when using paints, but you do not sand at all - why?

    I am a subscriber to your channel and enjoy your videos very much. Recently, TH-cam did
    something to their software that makes it difficult for me see your new videos. After signing in, I was always able to click on the "subscriptions" button and see which of my subscribed channels had posted new videos. On Friday, March 10th this feature went away but it came back on Saturday, March 11 and worked until Friday March 17th, when it went away again. It has still not returned to this date. It is difficult to go through all my subscriptions in order to see those who have posted new videos. This is especially true when you get the nitwits that post other You Tubers videos under their own name.
    I have been informing TH-cam of this problem every day but do not seem to be getting any response at all. Everyone suffers here, not just your subscribers.
    I am hoping that you have some influence with TH-cam and can contact them to help remedy this situation. Many thanks.

      Hi Stephen. Thank you for your comment and I am glad that you're enjoying my videos; I hope you continue to do so. With regards to the TH-cam subscriptions, this is a direct link to my channel th-cam.com/users/msabansmithwoodturning which you could bookmark for future ease of access. Alternatively, you should be able to switch on notifications, that way you will receive an e-mail from TH-cam when I upload new content to this channel.

      Thanks. I found a work around. I am thinking it might have been due to a windows update.
