    At 8:49 the undercut for the drive dog is there to act as stress relief.
    If there was just a square corner, this is where a crack is likely to propagate from, ultimately causing failure of the intermediate plate.

    appreciate the effort and thought in putting this video together. it fleshed out what is involved with these types of builds and how a reputable builder would be thinking through a client request(or how someone would hope a reputable builder is thinking through their request). Also appreciated the confirmation on consulting. Once i landed on a builder(i'm in the Northeast), i was wondering if requesting a consulting session is something that is or can be done to talk through a potential build(for a cost) and if those cost could go toward eventual build. While every shop may be different, it was good to see this is not an uncommon practice.
    If I may make a recommendation, it would be a great to see a follow up video reviewing what a customer should look for and be prepared to discuss when "interviewing' potential builders and what they should be prepared for(a consulting fee...shops worked hard for that knowledge). An educated customer, is a happy customer and a good customer.
    Thank you again for this vid. great stuff...it's unfortunate MotoIQ is a bit of a drive for me.

    Nice -- multi-plate clutch fibres and steels have been used on motorcycle clutches for years, specifically for the reasons Mike likes this XClutch twin-disc. If you look at the individual plates on say, a Hayabusa, tiny compared to an automotive performance application... but they're also 8 fibres and 7 steels to share transmitting that torque.... love this content, keep it going Mike 👍

    Super heavy clutches also put extra wear upon the firewall and other parts that interact with the clutch, like clutch fork, pedal box. I know this because I had a stage 2 cermetallic three puck clutch, worst idea ever. I broke some weld points on my firewall, cracked the torque tube on the pedal box assembly, bent my clutch fork, popped the slave and master clutch cylinder on my 2010 WRX. I think the only good thing to come from that was I learned how to install a dash, and clutch system into the car, along with some added bracing.

    • @motoiq
      @motoiq  2 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      Not to mention your crank thrust bearing.

    • @xpeacemaster
      @xpeacemaster 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I've read thats why you match it to the power you are making, any extra grip ends up breaking stuff way faster. I'd also go as far as saying those platforms are crap too, I know 3 guys with 4 blown motors between them. One guy's brand new oem replacement from Subaru developed rod knock breaking it on on the freeway on the way back from the dealer.

    • @HondaWagovan
      @HondaWagovan 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@xpeacemaster Yes you match your clutch to the torque you are making but when your power requirements require a very high effort clutch is will put lots of stress on the above parts of the clutch system I mentions and the thrust bearings. You will need to upgrade all of the above and add bracing to your firewall unless you like your firewall popping and making all sort of unpleasant sounds. And most people that make moderate gains often ignore all the supporting clutch upgrades. I learned this lesson the hard way and preach not making much power unless you can afford the other parts.

      @@RF-zn8xx they straight up are hoon-worthy out of the box, no oil pan baffle, and they have oil pumps that can't even keep up with spirited driving. I wanted an sti for a few years until I read enough on NASIOC. Then theres the bearings and tolerances that lead everyone to eventually doing a full rebuild at some point. They do sound nice though lol. They aren't as bad as every bmw motor made after the s54 though, but bad enough to be in the conversation.

    Funny thing about the "undercuts" on the floater disc is......it literally may just be the easiest way to machine the ears onto the disc when the end mill (tool used for side cutting in maching) cuts the ears, so that there's no interference from any chamfers between the floater and the flywheel. Usually the "undercuts" are called "Mickey Mouse ears".

    When focusing more on track use for a build, there are better options IMHO. Although it's not intended for street used and a bit more expensive, I've been running Exedy twin plate clutch and flywheels on my 400hp SR20 swapped 510, and my brother's 700hp R32 GT-R with very positive results. They're not particularly heavy, and with it's short throw response it may requires more attention to rev matching, but once you get used to it, shifting is far less effort and much quicker. In all consideration for the intended use, it's not ideal for easy street bombing, but on the track, it's definitely better for faster lap times.

    • @motoiq
      @motoiq  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Totally agree. One thing about EJ engine when running stock ECU's is that low inertia clutch and flywheels cause P300 codes to get tripped. Not an issue with standalones but if you are stock, accessport or ecutek tuned it's a hassle. This clutch in my option is the best street/track clutch for higher powered EJ's.

      @@motoiq Thanks, and completely understood. I kinda trailed off into Nissan territory there, but for that specific application, the X Clutch is a far better choice. BTW, I truly appreciate how generous you are with the time and knowledge you share. I've learned a lot from the SR20 vids, and I'm grateful. Why can't I find the same for the RB26 though? Plenty to hate there, but also plenty of ignorance on how to build one right. With no reliable source for info, my brother and I learned the hard and VERY expensive way. Be good, or at least don't get caught.

    How does this compare to the newer clutch masters 850 Strapped Series Twin Disc Clutch? Their "strapped" series has the same feature preventing the rattling noise.

      @@motoiq Yes. Extensively... what we ended up doing is fabricating a longer rod for the slave cylinder... 13mm extra, but I think I would like maybe 3mm more. Anxious to see your review and if you had this issue or not.
