Wonderful cover to Deep Purple
James' voice is so fucking good, and I don't know why Kirk gets so much hate, the solos are fucking awesome!! loved this cover, Metallica need to try a song like this for the new record.

Kirk is wonderful guitarist... but his "empty" man and he doesent have any more that inspiration and magic to make more good solos.

This cover is fantastic.
Kirk Hammet really did justice to Ritchie Blackmore's solo, I was afraid he would abuse his wah wah peddle. But by the 2nd half you can definitely hear the Metallica style solo.
The 2nd half of the solo, and the outro were good because you hear Metallica add their style to the song, but I like the original more because it doesn't shift to anger, it's just a short and sad song fitting as an outro to the album. I liked that the original got more emotional with the drums guitar and organ chords getting louder, but while staying with its sad soft tone.
I can see why some people like Metallica's version better, especially if they're already fans of the band, this does a great job making the song sound like Metallica's style but I gotta go with the original.

Im having trouble agreeing with people who are negativly commenting about this song, or how metallica composed the cover of it. As a long time fan of metallica as well as deep purple, I would think that the band deep purple would be humbled and proud that someone as large in the metal genre as metallica chose one of their songs to remake and offer to their own millions upon millions of fans, I would think that bob seger, as well as blue oyster cult, and any other covers theyve done can agre. Another thing that bothers me with negativity towards this is if you were to take a moment and think with an open mind you would realize that with all the choices in songs ever written, metallica actually agrees with you that this song amazing, which is probably the reason why they covered it in the first place. Wether you agree with their version or not the fact remains that they seem to have good musical taste to cover this good of a song. Personally, I can appreciate their version mainly because I am a genuine fan of all their work, however deep purple will always have made the original and no one can take that away.

Apart from being an awesome band in their own right, Metallica is also a great cover band. They make covers the way they are supposed to be made: in their own style. This song is beautiful, good job.
I like how they never shy away from labeling themselves a garage/cover band in a way, because they know if it weren't for these great songs they wouldn't be around. That's staying humble, and thanking your idols. Many, many bands owe a great deal of their riches to Metallica too due to these covers, so it's a give and take.
The melody on this one. 💙 I've loved the deep purple version since I was 13, but this was way better than I expected.

I love Metallica. I love almost all songs from Garage Inc. Great covers in that album. They did a good job even with Stone Cold Crazy. But this is total crap.

Beautiful song..... Being a heavy drinker or alcoholic whatever you want to call it... I can so relate to every word.... So many beautiful songs from 60s 70s and 80s.. Some good now too but I just love purple, kiss, zeppelin, cohen so much emotion..... In bed still drinking and crying.... I think I can never recover from being a Belfast child, then again I think of all the other people out there.... And I realise I'm wallowing in self pity and have my freedom... Except the solos in Nothing else matters, Metallica's version of Ecstasy of gold. And at least two solos from each of the instrumental tracks, I've said it for a long time Kirk's a decent player but hetfield is better

I like James' cover as he tries to come out of his comfort zone but to compare it to Gillan's original is simply a travesty. Particularly, this song is purely a Gillan song with the band giving a rare musical backup rather than the familiar individual virtuosities (the reason why it was not included in the album machine head)
One shouldn't compare the best voice in the rock music to, at best, an average singer.

Same thing with Whiskey, they took out the celtic skip that gave it its swing, after that its just a pub rock song. I know most on here wont even be able to to tell the difference, but in the 90s most Irish pub bands were already doing that tune Metallica heavy and included the proper beat. Its sad that Rock has taken on so many traits of Pop music. It dumbs it down to that audience level automatically.
