Vai said that each note sounded like "he was ringing a bell", because of the clarity and precise method by which he played and picked during solos. You can hear what Vai was talking about during the solo in this song. Both musicians are good friends and have worked on several projects together. It is never an argument of "who is best" between the great guitarists - that is left to the fans.

I saw DP in concert twice back in the 70s when Blackmore was in the band. He is a great guitarist but he seemed to be on stage for the wrong reasons. He showed 2 emotions - anger and complete indifference - acting like he was doing the audience a favor by being there. Even the audience had enough the 2nd time he wiped the top of Jon Lord's keyboards clean (including drink). Uninspired, "sloppy" (sorry) playing and he gave you the impression that he wasn't into it.
Steve Morse elevates this version to a up in the sky limits. What a great guitar player.
