- There are several good reviews about the Victorinox Ranger Grip 79.
This is my opinion and observations after several years of use.
I do show some of the applications of the tool.
I paid $46 four years ago.
The current online price is $52
Is this money well spent?

i have my own little huntsmen sak my dad bought me and i love it! i treat it as a tool, not a toy, its very good and has a lot of practical uses, its perfect.

Nice review, good Sir. By the way, if you are out in the field and you need a bigger hole than the awl actually is, you begin right so to drill the hole with the awl, and then you open the saw and drill it in that hole, until the diameter suits. That goes to the whole diameter of the saw, wich is about half of an inch.
Thank you for the comment and input about drilling with the saw. I actually did that a few years ago to my short walking stick so that I would pass a doubled paracord through it to use as a bow drill. I don't mention it, but I show using it in my video comparing drilling capabilities of different awls on knives and multi tools. I also compared them to a Brace and a 100 year old Herky Gerky. Using the bow drill with a 1/4 bit is quite fast and efficient. The double cord idea for bow drilling came from Survival Lily's channels - I saw it there first.

Dude. Don’t sell your freshman leather efforts short. I’d wear either one of those. Especially and even more so if my buddy said “hey this is for your SHTF Altoids; I made it” And the sheath? I’d drop my Leatherman Wave or Buck 110 in there with zero concern about losing them. Those are both magnitudes finer pieces than generic nylon or cordura robo-crap from you know where. Lastly I’m about to cost you a few bucks: check out the Fenix Ruike M51. It’s a beauty with all the SAK features & scissors too.
PS I have the exact same Ranger but this little Fenix is a very attractive tool. Give it a gander over on Eyesmazon.

I never go camping without my 79. It does such a great job at so many camp tasks that I can't imagine being without it in the woods. I've never used the corkscrew because I don't drink wine (although some of my friends do) and I don't tie knots that I can't untie, except in fishing line.I really don't miss the Phillips driver because I EDC a Tinker or Super Tinker. There may be a better camp knife out there, but I haven't found it yet and doubt I ever will.
Thanks for watching and commenting. I rarely use the corkscrew, myself. I opened up the bit driver on this and made a video of doing it. I use it for drilling and tightening/loosening nuts.
It is my "go to" knife for many tasks.
I bought 2 of these in 2020 when they were on sale for about $54. I have the version with the screwdriver instead of corkscrew. The price has increased quite a bit since. I find that the Trekker and Forester M grip are a little more budget friendly and every bit as capable.

i have the RG79 and the Outrider (amongst others) which has the same size saw as the other 111mm, as an outdoor/camping/bushcraft tool bigger is definitively better, the saw on the RG series is superior and so are the blade. for work around the home however the Outrider beats the RG79 for me since it has both the in line philips head and the scissors.
Watched a person into picking up the roadkill in action with the old Wenger version and was impressed. There were no more Wengers by then so I picked up the Victorinox with the Philips.Cant remember how much it cost as I bought it with the leather sheath and the two together weren't cheap. TBH I'd stick with making your own sheaths, the tool is outstanding but couldn't imagine the Victorinox sheath taking much prolonged use, I use a leather sheath I had hanging around I bought in a sale.

By the way, regarding the corkscrew, It can be used in conjunction with the Fireant system as an emergency fire starting aid. It consists of a tiny ferro rod and a chunk of tinder, both shaped to twist into the inside of the corkscrew! It is truly amazing, put out by Tortoise! Check them out.
Very true. I have seen these. I prefer the rod as I have a handicapped hand (had two fingers reattached and the knuckles fused). So small objects are very difficult for me to grasp. Thanks for the input though. You are absolutely right.
@@MasterYoist I can really empathise, as I have arthritis in my fingers, and would find it very difficult to use a Fire Ant as well! Personally, I'd go the extra mile for a more robust implement like a barbeque lighter (with the long spout), and live with the hassle attached to carrying it in my kit. But, it is a cute bit of kit for SAKs.

Check out my video about knife and multi-tool warranties. Customer service at Vicyorinox is so bad that my family all swore to never buy their products again. We love the product. But not customer service when it comes to the warranty.
I have a RangerGrip 79 I bought it over 2 years ago when it was on sale at my local Victorinox dealer for the equivalent of $30, about half the going price at the time. It was an impulse buy & apart from testing the blade on cutting open a few parcels & cutting up some cardboard boxes, I have not used it & am saving it as an Emergency situation knife.
Very wise.

I have a Fieldmaster, I’m going to upgrade to this knife. I can’t think of a scenario where a knife can’t beat scissors for cutting things; also, I can live without the Phillips. The main reason is because the blade locks and opens with one hand. It’s slimmer, also illegal in NY because the blade is 3.9 inches long (limit is 3), but I don’t care. I feel like I could trust my life with the RangerGrip 79. I also realized that the saw on my knife is more of a gimmick. I was cutting branches the other day and it took a while because of how small the saw was.
I did a video comparing the RangerGrip saw with the saw on a Leatherman Surge. I also did one on opening the bit driver on the RangerGrip - they all have one. I use my bit driver for drilling.

It is .9 inches longer than the legal size, but I don’t think they’ll care too much.
In return I’d get the one hand opening and locking blade and bigger saw.

Ich nutze das Ranger Grip 58 Hunter, habe es aber bei Victorinox auf die zwei Hand Klinge umbauen lassen. Wegen den verrückten Gesetze hier bei uns. Und auch die Grünen Griffschalen wurden montiert. Mit dem passenden Leder Holster. Ein sehr gutes Taschenmesser. Sehr schönes Video. Danke.

How and how often do you sharpen your blade?
Mine would be very used up after 4 years... looking at yours i think i am over sharpening my knives?
I either stop or hone (usually strop) the blade after my daily use of the blade.
Look at the Felix Immler chanel..perhaps U will find a answer there...
I wore the blade out on my first victorinox by sharpening it. Try using the least aggressive sharpening method that will get the job done. But their steel isn't very good,if you have a lot of cutting to do get a better knife

Sorry you had to pay so much. I checked the price on Amazon about 5 minutes prior to making the video.
When I get mine, I usually put it through my own version of Hell, including batoning with the blade fully open.
This is definitely in our bug out bag, just in case we really need to , you know "bug out."
My wife loves the Ranger Grip 71 Gardner version of this and uses it almost everyday.

@@danielbain3613 Yeah I bought mine directly from Victorinox so it was a bit more expensive
