I have the red handled version I love it wouldn't trade it for anything I keep it in my everyday bag I go day hiking almost every day. Retired at (66) there is so much that you could do with just this simple knife.
Well heck I didn’t know the blade lock release was the emblem .. I was actually disappointed with the fact I had to carefully move the lock with a finger nail .. that one time in life I should have actually read the directions !😂. Thanks for the info!
A noted Victorinox instructor recommends that, if you must baton an SAK, you do it with the blade in the half-open position. I carry a Rangergrip 78 (I like the red scales; they're harder to lose) and a Fieldmaster
Agreed. Felix Immler has a ton of videos showing the versatility of the SAK and he always batons in the half open position. It’s very helpful in places where carrying a fixed or locking blade is just not possible.
Thanks for the heads up. I don't use this technique a ton, but holding the end of the blade by the locking mechanism achieves a similar effect. Thanks for sharing the info!
@@adaptablesurvival I beg to differ. Having the blade locked open while batoning puts an unnecessary strain on the locking mechanism. The whole point of having the blade at 90 degrees to to keep the locking mechanism from breaking so it will continue to work as it should.
Hello fellow wisconsinite. I hale from the west side of the state by the Mississippi. I enjoy the information on the ranger grip 78, I'll be getting one next month. Thank you for the video
I think the branch you 1st cut with the saw is called Beenatree. It's Beenatree for years, then it falls on the ground...then it's just a stick🤣 👍 Cheers from Oz 🇦🇺
Love that knife! I did a review on my 78. I prefer the screw drive than the cork screw the 79 has. The 78 has been clutch for me many times. Nice review you did here, great vid!
I have looked a few times at SRO but they always seemed to be out of stock, so I settled for the red version. I also have a Swiss Champ and a Leatherman Rebar. The tip of the Leatherman's awl broke the first time I used it. I like your videos, thanks for sharing.
Nice one Paul! Love mine as well, glad I brought the rangergrip over a multitool at the Pioneer Scout course (the blade and saw are so good). More comfortable to handle than a multitool as well.
I just bought one recently, but haven't had a chance to use it but looks very well built. In the process of making leather sheaths for everything right now but will use it soon.
Good review! I never liked the folding saw on my pocket knives but a lot of the other features are nice. The mirrored blade polish looks great. The OD is 🔥
Hey Paul good down and dirty review. I've been using the 78 everyday for 2 years. I agree a locking saw blade would have been a better feature. Overall I'm content with it. The huntsman is my other SAK. Still going strong, seems like forever. Thanks.
Excellent video the one thing that stops me from getting this SAK is the lack of scissors. The one I prefer over this model is the Outrider in OD Green.
Nice video mate. Very informative. Subscribing was easy decision. However I just changed planes in Geneva, popped into the SAK flagship store and I brought a green Rangergrip.
👍 Nice review. Funny that the OD Green version costs so much more than the Red version as a Red version would be so much more desirable. I use the Victorinox Ranger which is a very similar knife with a corkscrew and agree these 111mm SAK knives are very good. I squared off the front section of the bottle top lifter on mine to use it as a ferro rod striker.
I carry a Fallkniven R2 Scout or a Bradford Guardian G3 in conjunction with my Rangergrip 78. Both can easily baton through anything that I can saw through with the Rangergrip and create feathers like a champ. If cost is a concern then a much cheaper but still very effective option is the Mora Robust Pro or the Cold Steel Finn Hawk.
Hey there...save your knife and don't baton with the blade locked out..you'll destroy the joint and locking mechanism...if you need to baton with it, keep it at a 90° Angle.... Nice short video btw 👍
Yeah, that's why I held the blade at the locking mechanism. But this isn't a technique I would use or practice on the regular. Thanks for heads up tho!
Just bought a Rangergrip 178 in the green/black just like this one from the Victorinox website for 85 bucks. I needed to add a serrated blade to my collection. I’d like to see them add a metal file to this lineup and the locking saw.
Geez I just bought this knife, had to order the red version with green scales. Paid $90 from Switzerland. Edit: Probably would of saved a few dollars with the pathfinder. Plus I’d rather support them. Also had to deal with the slight hassle changing the scales myself.
Actually victorinox offers handle scale replacements, even when you order it you can order some extra scales and ask them to change them for you before shipping I personally never done it because i dont own that many SAK and the ones i do own i love the way they are (Winter edition pioneer, rangerwood 55, customized swiss champ)
They should change the saw on it for one profiled like the Victorinox Field Master or OHT. There is too much metal behind the teeth, and it is my experience that it takes noticeably more effort to use.
Another great video! I carry the Victorinox Swiss Army Ranger Pocket knife. I like it much better than the Ranger 78. I hope you take a look at the Army Ranger Pocket and do a review on it. Your skilled opinion would be very valuable. I like it due to the size is smaller, less weight, and has more useful survival tools than the Ranger 78. Just MHO!
You are too young to know lol A cap lifter is a bottle cap opener like what use to be on soda bottles & beer bottles. Occasionally beer bottles still have the old caps (non-twist off). If you’re doing a video you should research all the tools first. 😂
I have the red handled version I love it wouldn't trade it for anything I keep it in my everyday bag I go day hiking almost every day. Retired at (66) there is so much that you could do with just this simple knife.
Victorinox Fieldmaster has been my carry knife on a daily basis for years and it's at home at work and in the woods!
Well heck I didn’t know the blade lock release was the emblem .. I was actually disappointed with the fact I had to carefully move the lock with a finger nail .. that one time in life I should have actually read the directions !😂. Thanks for the info!
It's gets the best of us! 😂🤣
There you go 👍
I bought a $20 Victorinox chef's knife about 10 years ago. Still sharpens and holds a sharp edge great to this day, and I use it multiple times a day!
I also carry the 78 in red. 👍👍. Very comfortable in my hand and looks unobtrusive. I use the Victorinox sheath as I hate carrying gear in my pockets.
Looks. Like a nice folder! Thanks for the thorough review!
Appreciate the video. Been looking at these for awhile, so really helpful!

The reason for batoning at 90° is to protect the locking mechanism & joint from shock.

Love my Ranger 78
Hello fellow wisconsinite. I hale from the west side of the state by the Mississippi. I enjoy the information on the ranger grip 78, I'll be getting one next month. Thank you for the video
Great review. I've had my eye one one of those for a lil while.
Super duper small knife! Bought one from SRO few months back. Cool little review. Thanks for your time on that.
It has a 3.9 inch blade which is about a half inch smaller then a Garberg.
I just got my victorinox ranger 79 today!
I've got an older version of this as a gift, {I can't remember the name} and it's held up under a lot of pre-teenage boy usage! It's a great knife!
Wenger originally possibly, now combined with Victorinox

I’ve had a 78 for years… it’s all I really need. Sure, I also typically take my favorite 5” of the week.
Great review, thanks!!!
Ranger grip hunter 58, used for about 5 months. Excellent pocket knife.
Love that knife! I did a review on my 78. I prefer the screw drive than the cork screw the 79 has. The 78 has been clutch for me many times. Nice review you did here, great vid!

What were you trying to use the awl on?
Nice one Paul! Love mine as well, glad I brought the rangergrip over a multitool at the Pioneer Scout course (the blade and saw are so good). More comfortable to handle than a multitool as well.
I agree! My Leatherman was a workhorse buy not the most comfortable.
I EDC the huntsman, totally love it.
I just bought one recently, but haven't had a chance to use it but looks very well built. In the process of making leather sheaths for everything right now but will use it soon.
Good looking knife and review , thanks for sharing , God bless !
Molly whop..... I never heard that before, but I like it!
Good review!

I don't know of any of them that has a locking saw mechanism, I wish somebody would figure this out and make one
Excellent video the one thing that stops me from getting this SAK is the lack of scissors. The one I prefer over this model is the Outrider in OD Green.
Yeah I was gonna get an outrider but then realized I don't use scissors a whole lot.
I thought about trying to add on
I HAVE SAK IN MY POCKET FROM THE AGE OF 14..
Nice video mate. Very informative. Subscribing was easy decision. However I just changed planes in Geneva, popped into the SAK flagship store and I brought a green Rangergrip.
Good afternoon, the tool opposite the bottle opener is a can opener
This looks like a good work knife.
I have the same knife. Replaced the toothpick with a small firefly ferro stick.
👍 Nice review. Funny that the OD Green version costs so much more than the Red version as a Red version would be so much more desirable. (Winter edition pioneer, rangerwood 55, customized swiss champ)
Thanks,
I've seen the green on Amazon a couple times, keep going between it or red
There is another hidden feature. Bit socket under the cladding. Just cut a hole.
They should change the saw on it for one profiled like the Victorinox Field Master or OHT. There is too much metal behind the teeth, and it is my experience that it takes noticeably more effort to use.
I'm not familiar with those models. I'll have to check them out.
I have the RangerGrip 79 as my Main blade. Works fine, but has to sharpen a bit often.
Will you be doing the hex-bit mod on yours?
I use a Rangergrip78 and a Ranger
Nice

I honestly don't use the pocket versions very often but I may look at them at some point.
Probably Gopher wood. Throw it on the fire and go for more.
Mollywhop tho lol that definitely is a thing still.
You are too young to know lol

😂
Thanks for watching 👍🏼
Your in a forest full of dead wood of all shapes and sizes !!!! So why baton with a pocket knife?
And don't give me any nonsense about dry wood etc.
you look like bigfoot...
