    Pro Tip: When using the large flathead screwdriver, if you push it into the screw head with a little pressure, you'll feel the screwdriver slide in slightly towards the knife body. As long as you maintain that pressure, it locks the slip joint and it won't accidentally close on you.

    Victorinox rarely miss. I would add that the old Wenger deserves credit on this one, since it was this brand that introduced the Ranger Grip series.

      If you want something a little flashier check out the Rangerwood 55. It has wood scales and man they are nice. I fluctuate between that and my Rangergrip 61 (cause its so much lighter). I also put a Nite IZE pocket clip on both and for the past year or so the adhessives been holding up on both. Its not the greatest clip ergo wise but I can pocket carry them with confidence now.

      I have a 79 because I wanted the corkscrew. I also have a 61, which doesn't have the saw.. You're right; the Ranger Grip series is woefully underrated.

    I love my Rangergrip..! I have the 78 that I carry about everyday on a custom crossdraw black leather sheath.. I forget I even have it on..! Then I also have the Rangerwood 55 I also carry on a custom crossdraw brown leather sheat, that I use for the outdoors... both are frickin awesome and I would be upset if I didn’t have them.. They take care of my smaller chores..:) great vid as always..!!✌️

    I've had the single-bladed model for about a year. It started as my woods knife; it is now my everyday knife regardless of vegetative or concrete surroundings. The saw is amazing. The firesteel you mentioned is called the Fire Fly. I bought a pair. They are quite delicate. Mine broke the first time trying to strike a spark using the back of the saw blade. The second one I carry in a smaller SAK as a back-up and I have not used it. Given how the 1st one broke, I'd not repeat the purchase. It is quite delicate. The knife is awesome.

    Victorinox has made both locking blades and one-hand opening blades in many models for years now. Mostly in the 111mm and 130mm sizes. I've owned and used locking one-handed models. And many of 111mm models have switched to liner locks, from side slide locks.
    The Ranger Wood 55 has walnut scales, and is beautiful. All this line includes a screwdriver that locks when pressure is applied.
    Glad you like these big Victorinox models. They are truly useful. A Rangergrip with a saw, and a good small hatchet, is a bushcrafter's dream.
    Thanks for the review.

  • @dasta7658
    @dasta7658 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    I've been using this model for 8 months and love it. Prior to this I had the Leatherman ST300 and Rebar as my go to bush tool. Now I have it on my belt in a XL Leatherman MOLLE pouch with a torch on one side, ferro rod and cord on the other (where the ST300 use to live). I have slipped a compact survival kit in the inner pouch. To date I haven't come across any tasks in the bush that made me wish I had one of my other multi-tools/SAK's with me.
    The down side to this tool for me is the Phillip's head screwdriver. As with all SAK's with the screwdriver on the back, they have movement back and forth which makes driving a screw into anything tough frustrating. That is unless it is a flat piece of pine on a stable surface as they do in most TH-cam reviews, but try putting a door handle onto a solid core door with it.
    It is a really great bush tool to have around and completely agree with the comments about the saw. Even the angle of the saw has been well thought out. I love it and I can't see myself using

    I have a 78 and *love* it. Its a perfect day hike/single overnight bushcraft tool.
    For longer stays or trail work I switch to a Leatherman P4 for scissors/pliars for opening bags, picking up hot stuff, etc.
    The P4 isn't perfect, but its fully one-handed and not too heavy for a large multitool.

    The Firefly Ferro Rod for SAKs can be found on Amazon (and other sites) and comes in two sizes. It isn't the easiest to use if you have big hands, but it is infinitely more useful to me than the tooth pick.

    Great info on the Firefly Ferro Rod...will order the set (3 each for $16). I bought the Rangergrip 178 with an OD green handle and love this kit. When I first received it I was disappointed that too much of the blade was serrated. However, after a year of use the serrations have been advantageous especially for cutting rope as I use rope rather than 550 paracord for setting up my canvas tarps. I bought the OD green belt sheath with the knife which encases the knife and a small ferro rod like the Schrade SCHFS 1 or a Light My Fire. The back of the saw blade is great for throwing sparks. Although the serrations do a fair job on feather sticks I prefer to use my Gerber Strongarm.

    Firefly ferro rod by green tortoise. They just started a new kickstarter called fire ant, it fits in the corkscrew and it comes with a helix tinder that fits in the screw as well. It’s glow in the dark as well.

    Waking up an old vid thread but, I recently started getting back into hiking and rediscovered bushcraft. After picking up half a dozen high carbon fixed blades I saw this video and promptly grabbed a 57. Completely agree it's an amazing design. Also grabbed a 78. A little thinner without the cleaning blade. One stays in my pack and the other in the car. not what I would call a pocket knife.

  • @mannihh5274
    @mannihh5274 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I'd rather prefer the Ranger Grip 55, because I'll never let go of the corkscrew. You can easily replace the Philips head screwdriver, if you take down some of the can opener's tip from the nail groove side. The corkscrew is very useful for undoing knots (especially in paracord) and for storing the Helix tinder. The ferro-rod replacing the toothpick is the "Firefly" from Tortoise gear, as well as the Helix tinder and the "Fire-ant" (Victorinox started selling Fire-Ant and Helix combos lately under their own brand), a ferro-rod so small, it fits into the corkscrew together with one Helix tinder. Without it, two Helix tinders fit in there. To fit a Firefly into the toothpick slot, you need the big Firefly and maybe modify the scale a bit. Remember: heat the knife in hot water before removing the scales to prevent damage.
    BTW: the ricasso acts as a stop for the blade if closed - don't touch it, or the blade belly will hit the spring and get dull the first time you close it.

    I have the RangerGrip 78 - really all the knife you'd ever need in most outdoor situations, and easy/unassuming to carry. I love mine and it is often in my backpack while hiking....that or a Cold Steel AD-10 in my pocket, which surprisingly melts away in my shorts pocket on long hikes.

    I have an old Wenger version (without the hunting blade) and it has proven to be terrific. Should be mentioned, though, that the one-handed opening is for righties only. Tools get in the way for lefties. I like the blade so much that I keep it handy most of the time at home. (I'd probably EDC it, too, but it's not very pocket friendly for that.)

    11:29 The concave blade: not sure how this can be used for skinning, as one usually uses a blade curving sharply the other way, with a big "belly". I would say it would be far more useful in cutting bundles of grasses or thin branches, with a pulling cut, holding the bundle with the other hand, much like one uses a sickle (as you mention). The tip suggest a gutting blade rather than a skinning blade. I agree with you, this is the version I would choose as a camp knife! [I'm amazed that I haven't come across this version before! ] Thanks for bringing it to our attention!

    I have the Rangergrip 79 and it's a fantastic camp tool. Great for woodcraft and food prep. I do have the Firefly ferro rod that is supposed to fit into the toothpick slot. The rod works great on my 91mm SAKs, but does not fit into the Rangergrip size knives due to some obstructions in the scales. Also, the "ricasso" is there on the blade because of where the blade stops inside the handle. That portion of the blade makes contact inside the handle.

    The cap lifter/screwdriver doesn't have a lock, like the trekker does.But, like most of the "grip" style knives they put out; it does have a spring loaded "slip type lock" when you put pressure straight down to use it as a flat blade screwdriver, it sinks in about a 1/16" to engage an inner notch to keep it from closing on you.

    I love my Ranger Grip. I got a 61 for my EDC. It lacks the saw and second blade but I'm fine with that cause I wanted something lighter in my pocket. My only complaint is that it dise not have a pocket clip. I fixed that by putting a Nite IZE pocket clip for tip up carry on it and it works great. Also I'm right handed and I put the clip on so it will kind of sit in my palm swell and that's been fine. I've had it on the knife for a year and the adhessive is still holding up.
    For something heavier I got my Rangerwood 55. Which I put a pocket clip on too. lol. I love that knife but its like lugging a leatherman around so I don't like to EDC it unless its in my bag.

    I have a few SAK's, but no Rangergrips yet. That will soon change though, because I'm eying up the Rangergrip 78. I think it's a good option for bushcraft use, and I really don't need the curved blade, as I don't do any hunting anymore. I do see though, for those that do, it would be a good option.

  • @VisionWords
    @VisionWords 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    One competitive option would be the Leatherman Sidekick. It's similar in price. It has a good blade and saw, though both are smaller than on this SAK. But both the blade and the saw do lock on the Leatherman. The Sidekick has slightly better ergos than most Leatherman tools (in my opinion), but, again, probably not as good as this SAK. Where the Leatherman makes up ground would be in the inclusion of pliers, a small serrated blade, a small file, and... a pocket clip.
    Thanks for the video!

    If you're going to go hunting get a high carbon stockman. You can dress a deer with a swiss army knife but it's not easy because the steel is not up to the task. I tried it once,my buddy quickly handed me his buck 110. A swiss army knife may get the job done but trust me it is easier with something else.

    I own leatherman and I have the swiss 57. I have used pliers for fishing and camping. Take fish hooks out of the fishs mouth and to take hot items out of the fire with my surge pliers. I like the Leatherman better, but I will use my Swiss 57 too.

    I just wish they would swap out the curved knife and put in scissors! A nice long thin blade, decent saw, and scissors, yes please! It would be nice to have the saw lock also.

    Hey man, I've watched a lot of your reviews and find them very useful, practical and on the point. This one as well. I am a victorinox kind of guy, carying the 111mm work champ in the outdoors. I was thinking of buying a mora kansbol for a more robust knife which is still good for food prepping (by robust I don't mean a survival knife, I do not ever need to baton with it). However, watching that review I can't help but think that this knife is also a good option. Please let me know which one would you choose for a general purpose outdoors knife. Thank you in advance.

      z37b It’s pretty big so I would recommend a pouch on your belt.

    I can't imagine not having a plier based multi-tool in an urban setting; in an outdoor setting pliers become a lot less important, especially considering the weight of a plier based multi-tool. There will be a few exceptions, of course, but for MOST--I would say the overwhelming majority--of the instances you're going to need your multi-tool to repair or adjust equipment, you'll be able to do it with a Phillips or flat screwdriver. I think you're probably right, this is IDEAL for an outdoor environment. For an urban environment, I don't think this is the best option. But I've come to the conclusion that the single tool that is going to be ideal for ALL environments is a unicorn--there's no such thing as a single multi-tool that is going to serve your needs equally well in an urban or an outdoor environment, or even all circumstances within those environments.

    I think Turtle Gear sells the FireFly ferro Rod for SAK possibly only (small) size can fit. Not sure about the larger size as it did not work on my Ranger Grip Boatsman.

    I saw users who sharpened the unsharpened part of the blade, to realize that it butts against a pin or something when is closed, and it dulls.

    This is the Best Victorinox/Wenger Knife I have Found... I have the RangerGrip 59 with No Gut Hook & with Corkscrew...
    I don't Need a ScrewDriver/Phillips Bit in the Woods, Its 130mm and it is Big! A MONSTER for Outdoor use!!! Too Big for the Pocket...
    That would be my 111mm OH Trekker with Custom Swiss Bianco Pocket Clip, OH Trekker Black Out, or US Army One-Hand Soldier.
    For EDC: Its Either Victorinox 93mm Pioneer X Black ALOX Scale, or Farmer Red ALOX OLD Cross Sturdy Boy (Brass Rivets and Liners) or one of Several Model '61 Soldiers, Favorite is '99 with KeyRing & Lanyard, that is Rare and Hard to Find... But that will be Fixed soon with Converting 93mm with Pocket Clip and Torx Screws/Pivots!!!

    A 7inch folding silky saw fox f180 alone is £25 English pounds so around $29 us dollars and then to have another fixed blade or longer bladed folder with quality of this will be a tough one to get for same value as you have with this
