    The spent barrels from this should be interesting once they get to Scotland. In a few years we might see an "ex-american single malt" aged single malt scotch. Try saying that three times fast 😀

    I always appreciate your take on whiskey. I gave up trying single malts a while ago. If 20-30 year scotch and other single malts won't do it for me, this whiskey in diapers and training wheels doesn't have a chance. Just not for me. Thanks for the honest and precise review Jason. Keep them coming. Cheers to 100k subscribers this year my friend.

    My suggestion for an iffy malt is to try putting a literal drop or two of water and not mixing or swirling for a couple of minutes. After that, proceed as usual.
    If you want to see if the citric note is a "distillery character" thing, keep an eye out for Old Pultney > Balblair.
    Its taken years for me and the wife to see how little of the malt palate comes through when youre used to cask strength bourbons. Brown-Forman has been killing it with Glendronach (and Glenglassaugh, imo) though, but their OF casks come through nicely on the Glendro Cask Strength. Probably the easiest way to malt from bourbon, because Diageo dont know crap about ASM

    Appreciated this honest review. Creating an excellent single malt whiskey takes time and patience. Most Scott and Irish malt whisky makers have been doing this for many decades and have perfected the process. I suspect some of these new American malts are being created and released too quickly by distillers who are not experienced in malts. Also, the best malt whiskies are not aged in new charred oak barrels but perhaps that is what will differentiate American malts from legacy brands.

    i started my whisky journey with bourbon and still enjoy it on a cold winter day, but have moved to single malts now, and not because of the corn/rye mashbill, it's entirely to do with the virgin cask. Bourbon distilleries already have their own used barrels that they wouldnt have to buy from elsewhere; so I honestly don't understand why they're still using new oak?

    Couldn't agree more with Westward and ASW. I have the Westward CS and the ASW Duality (Rye + Barley), and they are both awesome. The Duality almost comes off like a peated scotch on the finish, smokey but minus the medicinal notes. So I blended a Laga 9yr and Emerald Giant CS just to see how close it would be. Not too far off and pretty interesting!

    I am glad that American companies are making malts, some like Westland and Balcones are fantastic, but I think the insistence by some companies on using only new barrels is a mistake. The bourbon and rye companies could make some interesting malts if they use their barrels and experiment accordingly.

    • @MrJhchrist
      @MrJhchrist 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I'm pretty sure it's not just up to the brand, it's TTB regulation. Nothing other than plain old no other adjective "whiskey" "light whiskey" or "corn whiskey" can use used barrels. "Straight" specifically demands new charred barrels by law, as does "malt whiskey". Maybe it is short sighted, but the idea is to add value to American whiskey by differentiating it from the used barrels in most of the rest of the world. To be clear they can use used barrels, but only after at least some time in a new one. (Edit: "whisky distilled from malt mash" could also be aged in used barrels, but no surprise why a brand would rather meet the "malt" and / or "straight" standards even if they miss out on some interesting opportunities in used wood)

    • @ilikejelloyay208
      @ilikejelloyay208 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@MrJhchrist right, I get the straight part, but there is no requirement for the malt part. Hence, I think them putting themselves in the new barrel box limits them.
      Edit: I just found they have difference between malt and single malt. Interesting. Single malt is not finalized that I can see but new barrels are not a requirement in the proposals.

    • @MrJhchrist
      @MrJhchrist 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@ilikejelloyay208 There may be a change coming, but I'm pretty sure "malt whiskey" still requires new oak. See federal regulations /title-27/chapter-I/subchapter-A/part-5/subpart-I Table 1 to Paragraph (c)
      "(2) Bourbon Whisky, Rye Whisky, Wheat Whisky, Malt Whisky, Rye Malt Whisky, or [name of other grain] Whisky. Fermented mash of not less than 51%, respectively: Corn, Rye, Wheat, Malted Barley, Malted Rye Grain, [Other grain]
      160° or less
      Charred new oak barrels at 125° or less"
      Or is there some other section I'm misreading?

    • @ilikejelloyay208
      @ilikejelloyay208 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@MrJhchrist no, I think you got it right. There is a legal distinction from “malt whiskey” and “single malt whiskey.”
      The single malt does not have a new barrel requirement. I cannot find a final TTB issuance for it, but their own proposal allowed for used.
