I learned years ago from a dynamic duo how to judge whiskey. The best whiskey is the one you like, the way you like to drink it.

I love the advice about "who" to listen to. Whether it's fragrances, cigars, or whiskey, when I find someone who has similar tastes I often find the recommendations to be solid. As is the case with this channel. Thanks for great content. Look forward to more to come. Cheers 🥂

Definitely tailored a lot of my purchases based off how you and Rex gave reviews. After the first few I tried, it helped me compare/contrast what you guys said you found and liked or disliked to what I found and liked or disliked. It also helped me confirm when something "wasn't that great" (being nice here) if you reviewed it later and mentioned the same notes. Cheers!

Judge in context. I always try to take in account the value for money and to the drinker of the bottle when judging whiskey. Great run down Daniel!

This American single malt isn’t bad. My preference is delicious single malt Scotch! For me nothing compares yet! Cheers!

Tried this for the first time, and first American single malt. While I did enjoy it and found it nicely drinkable neat, at over $50 a bottle there are other whiskies that I would typically spend my money on. At $35 it would be more attractive to me at least.

I think your explanation on the column still and doubler explains why I am not a fan of these major distilleries making American single malt now. Of all the big ones the only I liked was Jack Daniels but thet may also be because it was a sherry cask and cask strength as well to cover up the column still to me. Craft American single malt on a pot still is amazing to say the least. On judging all of those are so true on what you said. Also a good thing I am not the only judge otherwise it would be the big and bold that always win for me. It's definitely interesting to see what the panel enjoys and what ends up winning. Cheers

You make fabulous points Daniel. I don’t compare this Bulleit Single Malt to an expensive Scotch. That would be unfair. Absolutely. I certainly understand Bulleit’s desire to get into this enticing, lucrative market! I do appreciate this expression and I am glad I could get a bottle when visiting the U.S. I haven’t seen it in Canada. Be well.

The hardest thing I've come to learn is the subjectivity surrounding what I ate or drank prior to a specific glass. My first experience with Angel's Envy left me feeling like I was drinking the contents of a floral air freshener. Years later I went to a tasting of solely their products and was delighted to find that my initial experience was very skewed, and that I did in fact enjoy their various expressions. Bearing this in mind, I've had to temper my recommendations to friends, and try to give them some context to my feelings so as not to shy people away from that which they might like.

I think based on what I saw from the Bourbon Lore Ben Holladay blend, a bunch of whiskey tube definitely did stuff as if that group was their customer. When you guys said Crowded Barrel won best grain to glass single malt in Texas, I guess what I'm generally looking for there is Single Estate or you owning all of the land the barley was on. So it just came off strange. Otherwise we can call Garrison Texas Grain to Glass Bourbon. Which I guess is true...but if we're doing that then we need not be bound by "single malt" only being barley. Dunno.

Bulleit is definitely not my cup of tea lol! I bought a Bulleit BP 123.1 proof for $40 early on in my whiskey adventures. How could I go wrong for cask strength at $40? The tasting notes were acetone and cherry cough drops. I also realize that one can not judge an entire company on one bad bottle, however, since that time I tried Bulleit Rye and it was blah. For me personally, I would never risk my cash on anything Bulleit ever again.

I don’t know if this was psychological, but I chose to wait for a more acceptable time of day to watch this episode because I at least had a bottle from the same distillery, but I think it was a different release, at least the label on mine was a different color, but I tasted some of the same notes described. Not to state the obvious but I think you need to judge whiskey with a grain of salt, not literally but there is a huge difference between something like Talisker Storm scotch vs a Jameson Irish whiskey

I own a lot of different whiskies. I try a lot of different whiskies. What matters to me is how the whiskey tastes. I don’t care if it’s $20 or $300 whiskey. Does it taste good to me. I don’t give a shite about how, when, where or why a company makes whiskey. DOES IT TASTE GOOD?

Thanks for sharing this one. I’ve been eyeing this bottle at my local shop. I’ve liked the couple of ASM I’ve bought, but those ones have been craft and I enjoy that craft “funk”. So I’m guessing this one would kind of be a little of a disappointment

Usually when I judge a whiskey the things that win me over are the talent portion, and the swimsuit competition.

I think you CAN be somewhat objective in your judgment of a whisky, wine, music, or whatever. I am not a fan of bluegrass music as I own NO bluegrass albums. But whenever I watch and listen to bluegrass musicians I am often amazed by their technical expertise and level of skill in playing. I can say they are a great musician and perhaps singer yet I would not buy a CD. I would only listen to the music if it happens to be playing. In the same way, I'm not a fan of Pinotage (a South African cross of Pinot Noir and Cinsault) but have had it with charcuterie and said "it works!' Yet you'll not see my buying a bottle. The same goes for some whiskies. I think I can recognize the craftsmanship (objective judgment) of a whisky and yet say "but it's not my thing" (subjective preference). This is particularly true of rye whiskies.

I'm curious if you've found any key phrases that "experts" use that either means nothing or throw red flags to their ability to explain a flavor profile of a whiskey as they judge it?
For example, the "trust me" cliche phrase is often a red flag for me in business discussions.

Taste is of course subjective. And the best whiskey is the one you enjoy the most period. I will say proofing any whiskey down to 40% is bullshit. Ive never had a whiskey that was best at 40% and im pretty sure the k ly reason a company woukd do it is because thats the lowest it can go and still call it whiskey. Also age is such a bad way to determine quality or value. If you want boring dont spend 1000$ on some 20 sothing year old whiskey. Theres plenty of 30-40$ bottles that you will enjoy just as much. And another thing! Lol but 🖕 redbreast for charging 75$+ its good but not great. Recently did a blind taste at the house with some friends and powers gold label beat red reast 12 6 out of 6 and is like 30$. Daniel your the best dude just my 2 cents take it for what its worth. Cheers everybody
