Nice one fellas! Kudos to Jules for always being straight up and not bending immediately to peer pressure.... appears as though Dutch and Dillon (D 'n D).... Double D... Stormy D.....anyway, I digress..... seems Stormy DD's have similar palates and Jules really is the market correction because everyone has a different palate in reality and he represents this demo. Either way.... fun as hell watchin you madmen.😂
American Single Malt is amazing. The weather is different in the USA and people who appreciate good whiskey will enjoy it. One thing I’ve noticed is the aging for something like Balcones or Westland gives an advantage (IMO) to distillers in the US vs Scotland but it’s a matter of figuring out what those up and down temps do to the product over time. I’m a person that likes variety so I think it’s great but I don’t think they are trying to take away Bourbon or Scotch drinkers but more presenting an alternative to the crazy allocated prices on bottles. ASM makes sense, and Bulleit surprised me by how good it is, especially aged for only 3 years or so.
The interaction here was top notch. Reminds me of the spirited, yet pointless, debates I have with my closest friends, but this time I got to be a spectator. Lol. That being said, I'll continue to be the curmudgeon about your scoring system. Dutch, for example, was complaining loudly about the grain notes on the palate, yet gave it a 16! A grainy, sweet, one dimensional whiskey sounds average at best. Use the lower part of your scale! The 10 (average) is starting to feel lonely. Use it! Rant over. Notes were excellent, as usual. Cheers guys.
I know there are plenty of things to try, but maybe do a ASM tasting of some of the more popular bottles. I really liked everything from courage and conviction and Virgina distillery in general. Westland, Cedar Ridge, Westward, Balcones are others. (Granted I am not very familiar with Scotch)
I've found that American single malts produced west of the Mississippi tend to be distinctively creamy in a way that is different than Irish whiskey or Scotch. Westview's Stout Cask is the most distinct American single malt because it doubles down on the creaminess. (American single malts made in Kentucky, Tennessee and Indiana by older bourbon distilleries tend to taste like toned down bourbons.)
I mean, Dutch is right that barley is a grain, but it is not like rye, wheat, or corn, granted. Maybe Dutch is getting a more "raw" flavor to the barley than Julies or Dillion. Either way, I learned today that Bulliet has a single malt. Very cool!
Their rye whiskey certainly is - but the bourbon was originally Four Roses, and speculation is that is is now Barton or Beam or their own new distillate. Never seen confirmation of any source for the bourbon since they stopped with Four Roses though. Would love to see some good info on it though!

The malt is from an unnamed KY distillery "which was already making malt" which doesn't tell us a whole lot, other than that it's not their own distillate and it's not MGP. (Beam? A smaller entity that does contract distillation?)

Bulleit isn’t going to take down Pappy ever, but it’s darn good Whiskey, they totally found their niche in the market!
MGP does have a 100 % Barley mash bill. I saw this bottle and was also wondering about the "bottled by" line without a "distilled by" reference.

Balcones is doing just fine and isn't going anywhere. In fact, now focusing on Single malts. American single malt isn't "a fad".
I will pass and stick with my Lagavulin, Ardbeg and Laphroaig!!

Dickel rye is the same mashbill as the Bulleit rye only charcoal mellowed 2x and is 10 x better imho!
