- This is the new Acura NSX Type S, and my first drive to find out if it's worth the hype! The new NSX has always mixed opinions, but now we have the Type S, and on paper it should be something special and isn't getting the recognition it deserves. Let's find out what it's like!
I've always been quite a fan of the new Acura/Honda NSX, although it's never been particularly well received. However, I'm in Tennessee with my friend @458destroyer to take his one-of-350 Type S, finished in Thermal Orange Pearl, for a first drive to see what I make of it.
Now pushing 600hp from the 3.5l turbo V6 hybrid set up, it's both technologically refined, while also offering a completely new visual setup which significantly dials up the visual aggression. 458destroyer's car happens to also wear an aftermarket exhaust, allowing the V6 to rasp away as we go out on the twisty roads.
The NSX was a significant change from the previous generations of the cars, developed by a team with many members that had come from the Porsche 918 Spyder project, and that technology really came down to a price point that set the bar high, well ahead of the likes of the Ferrari 296 GTB and McLaren Artura. Arguably, this car which is significant years old, offers still a competitive package.

You need another japanese car in the collection. The nsx is a great car and very under rated. I for one have always loved them from the 1st gen to the current version.

@@MainelyW212 You've never driven a fast car have you... 600 PS is an abundant amount of power for a car of NSX's weight and shape... I would say maybe around 400 PS will keep a smile on your face while keeping the thrill. If you were saying that it's underpowered compared to its competitors, well the NSX competes with the likes of the Corvette, now discontinued 570S, etc., not 296 GTB or Atura like he mentioned in the video. And it does 0-100km/h in 2.7s (since 0-60mph is 2.5s). How is that underpowered? You'll never (need to) reach the top speed of 307km/h anyway
I love how 458destroyer is so generous with his cars. Emilia Hartford just put a straight pipe exhaust on his 296GTB and drove the heck out of it. She called him after burning the tires off of it and he said "cool I've already ordered new tires".

The new NSX is overrated by fanbois. If it was such a great car then it would be competing against twin turbo Huracans, Lambos, R8s, R35s, and Vipers in Texas. Or setting records at World Time Attack, Grid Life, and the likes.
It's just another garage queen for fanbois, and will be passed by a turbo K24 on a highway pull 😁

@@sepg5084 I think when someone who lives and breathes cars and has owned and driven about every cool car in the last 100 years like Jay Leno has states it was his favorite daily and best made car that he knows of, a lot of people listen.
In 30 years when other 2010's supercars are forgotten, the new NSX will b remembered. Just like the original.

I love the backroads of Tennessee. I’m very fortunate to be able to hop on my motorcycle and ride these twisty roads whenever I want.
Really not a fan of those lights in that garage, maybe it’s just the camera not doing it justice but i am finding it difficult to differentiate the other cars in the collection.
Yet another excellent adventure from the Shmee.

It's definitely a think that camera lenses struggle with bright lights and see it more overwhelmingly than the human eyes do

The lump in the boot/trunk is due to the transmission which was not accommodated for when they switched the engine layout at the last minute from transverse to longitudinal.

A car ahead of its time I’ve actually seen one of these not the type S but a basic NSX. It was in a residential neighborhood in orange paint considering how many they didn’t sell and how rare these are, I was freaking out I love this thing. It was just priced too high when in its segment there are better options

As a TSX owner I think this and Acuras are great vehicles. This is way beyond my wallet but I love looking at them in the dealership when I’m there lol

I love that the car holds its gears and doesn't up-shift in manual mode. It seems its a pretty rare feature these days
I wonder what the upgradeability and tune ability potential are for this platform. I'd like to see what these can do with larger turbos.

@@cristomagnus I never said it was a rare feature for supercars, just that it was a rare feature in general, and that still holds true. So does my statement that I enjoy that feature. The VAST majority of modern automatic cars won't let you bounce of the rev limiter, most auto up-shift.

In Japan you can find the Honda NSX with right hand drive and every example is for sale at the right price. I think it will make for a great collection at the Shmuseum!

Since the first version of this new generation, I found this car very beautiful. It has a very timeless look, externally. Internally it is not ugly, but it is below its competitors. But I always imagined that if I had a super car, the new NSX would be highly regarded as an option. The problem with this car was being compared to the first NSX. It's the same problem the new Supra faced. Excess expectations are always a problem.
I remember when the gen2 Ford GT stole the spotlight from it back in 2015/2016😂
An underrated car for sure
The 2016 NSX was priced from $156,000, an expensive alternative to Corvette and Porsche sports cars; the 2017 Ford GT was a $456,000 harder-core supercar. Both halo V6s, but neither had much in common with the rest of the Honda/Acura and Ford lineups. As Shmee says, the hybrid NSX wasn't light and deft like the original NSX. It arrived late and heavy and the complicated 3 motor hybrid system only contributed about 80 horsepower. I think it and the BMW i8 are getting the recognition they deserve; two handsome cars that were early with interesting tech even if they weren't the standout Porsche 918.
@@skierpage Agree with that, its a bit overrated. its mostly just ricer/honda fans that think its some amazing thing.
The check engine light on and the sound I hear that thing make tell me that some catless downpipes have found their way onto that thing. Between that plus a tune/JB4, you’re around 700hp with that thing. Not bad at all.

You mentioned that it was a first of its kind in the hybrid supercar concept... which is true. I remember the Holy Trinity (LaFerrari, 918 and P1) being unveiled in 2013 and this car in 2011 if I am not mistaken. So this generation of the NSX actually makes it an 'NSX (New Sports car eXperimental)' as well; just a 'different' concept from its predecessor.

I agree 100%. The NSX Type S is one beautiful looking, amazing performing supercar that does not get the respect it deserves. So glad the Acura engineers decided to go out on a high note with the Type S rather than just let the car fizzle out and die a quite death. This car is a future collectable for sure. Thank you for showcasing it. Keep up the great work!
I doubt it. What's going to draw them to it, other than having the label of a car that's famous? You really think anyone will want an archaic hybrid system with an pitiful V6 in the future? No, they're going to want naturally-aspirated or turbocharged cars.
The original NSX will be worth multiple times what this one will be in the future, and this one will be known as the insult to the car name just like the "Mark V" Supra is a stain on the Supra's history.

The styling has a Lambo twang to it, although the greenhouse sides are more nearly vertical than any recent Lambo, which likely makes the interior feel more roomy.

Yes. Even the normal Honda NSX... Clever bodywork design with careful aerodynamic treatment. All the elements of the car are studied aerodynamically so that the flows involve during the movement circulate, creating the minimum turbulence. It manages to channel the air to the rear generating aerodynamic support to the rear axle of 75% without any specific appendage. Cutting-edge technology covered in a body built with the most sophisticated materials!

That’s because it has aftermarket cats. Maybe even straight pipes. Even aftermarket cats throw a code that can be cleared. Comes up randomly. I know because I have a straight piped Type S.

Criminaly under rated, as always with Honda its way before it's time as well. In engineering terms Honda are head and shoulders above everyone.
