@@BluePhantomCavalierif only Toyota didn't kill people with unintended acceleration. All car makers have issues. Our Toyota was far worse than our Hyundai and Kia vehicles, including a transmission failure at 90k miles.
I bought a new Camry hybrid because of the Toyota hybrid track record, my first Toyota and I came out of a Kia product. But I also purchased with cash and plan to own it a long time, if I was leasing I might have felt different, Hyundai/Kia usually have better rates. And I extended the warranty to 5 years, Toyota should definitely be 5 years B2B standard!
As a former Kia owner, I traded in my almost 10 year old car for my Venza last year (sister car to the RAV4 Hybrid). I found my Kia to be quite reliable for about 6 years, but in the last 3 years I owned it, it needed about $7000 worth of repairs on various things that didn't seem to hold up long term (and a few of the issues were quite expensive). Now, the good news is I bought an extended warranty, so it was all covered under that, but even making warranty claims always seemed like a hassle. Also, I had to bring the vehicle back numerous times to fix the issue, so in my experience, the service level was pretty below average. If they couldn't handle repairs right the first time around on a regular car, I wouldn't be overly confident they'd manage any better with a more complex vehicle with a turbo and hybrid powertrain. I chose to replace my Kia with a Toyota Hybrid as they are known to be the most reliable vehicles on the planet and I am hopeful the dealership experience will be better (it can't be worse than the Kia dealership was). Lastly, regarding "Cablegate", the issue is the cable that connects to the rear motor mounts facing "up", which allows salt/water to creep into the connector housing and pool, which will corrode and damage the connector over time. This issue only affects 2019-2021 models. The newer ones have a cover that helps protect the connector/motor better and I think they may have reversed the connector position (so it now faces down).
@@rinbine2713 I suppose it technically isn't, just like the coax cable is not your TV or the speaker cable isn't your speakers. However, it's clearly a design oversight and they should just cover it. I had a lot of things repaired on my Kia and dealing with warranty claims wasn't simple and straight forward with them either.
I have a 21 Venza limited fully loaded. Question for you; in US gallons are you able to pump more than 11 gallons when nearly empty? Toyota says Venza has a 14.5 gallon tank and highway mpg over 500 miles. In almost 12,000 miles and 1- extended driving trip of over 2500 miles, I’ve been unable to get more than 425 miles range on 1-tank. My dealer has had the car twice to try to remedy the issue but has failed. Toyota corporate has been notified but they are inept. Plenty of complaints from owners on Venza forums. Can’t complain about the mpg as it’s been as advertised. Btw. the tires are terrible in the snow and are very loud with increasing miles. Good luck with your Venza purchase.
I've test drove both of these. Looking at the exterior of the Rav4 really has me questioning why I decided to write it off as what I wanted. Then I saw the interior and remembered 😂
I just got my Sportage hybrid last Friday and I’m absolutely loving it! I got the Xline and I actually took a lift 90 miles away to Lancaster because they told me if I came in that day to buy instead of charging me $6000 over sticker they would only charge $2000 and pay for my ride. I was very happy with Valley Kia and I’m very happy with the car but I may wind up trading it in very soon because I want the top of the line and then white instead of the gray that I got. It’s just a personal choice And I will lease and save about $250 a month by doing so by trading up. I wanted all of the features and I wanted the white color and they were absolutely not available right away. The Rav4 has a better engine but no turbo vs the Sportage Hybrid which is nicer inside and out plus it's quieter. I remember in the early 2000's that the Koreans surpassed the Japanese in electronics and television.
All your numbers are off by exactly $500 US for the Toyota RAV4 Hybrid. Every trim model is $500 more on the Toyota website in the US. And worth noting you're comparing the 2023 Sportage vs. the 2022 RAV4. I'm sure those prices will get a bump up for the new 2023 RAV4 model with the updated interior infotainment screen. I just spent 2 weeks researching both of these vehicles, watching every video and reading every article I could find on the two. Yesterday I ordered the Sportage hybrid. Also, local Kia dealerships are saying 4-6 months for the Sportage Hybrid, while Toyota dealership says RAV4 is over a year wait supposedly. It’s Kias time right now. Toyota is headed in the wrong direction, lack of innovation and frankly lazy/behind the competition roll outs/updates and the reliability isn’t what it used to be. I have a 2017 sportage and it’s the best everyday/family car In my opinion. Here in the US the standard warranty is 5yr/60k bumper to bumper w/ 100k power train warranty. It’s not perfect by any means but there’s less compromises that I can live with.

Thank you guys both for having honest, practical reviews. So many of the old reliables are having issues, and so many of the formerly fraught manufacturers have really stepped up. I'd love to get your thoughts on who you think has the best longterm reliability these days.
10-31-23 "CableGate"...since your video, has now been resolved. In the USA Toyota has sent out letters to those affected hybrid owners, that an 8 year of 100k mile warranty on the cable in question now exists. I recd my letter I believe about 8 months ago. They will inspect the hybrid vehicle for free if it is exhibiting symptoms like a defective cable and if it is the issue, they will also replace it for free. I am very happy with that. In Canada my understanding is that affected hybrid owners, also recd a warranty/ free replacement if the cable has failed due to corrosion (per articles I have read) for a similar period of time.
I love your reviews. Based on your VW Jetta review I bought a 2022 SE. I love it and the real world fuel economy is a lot lot better than the EPA estimates. You both did a great job with this review but let's be honest. At the end of the day Andrea is right.....of course. 🤣 Both Toyota and Kia are legit companies although I am a little disappointed to see Toyota insisting that a cable is not part of the hybrid system. That's not what I expected from them. Keep up the great work!
Very good review, I had hard time deciding between the 2. What leaned me toward RAV4 is the shifter. Kia has a dial that I don’t understand but sure looks like it’s not like the RAV4 where you can manually shift it. Being from Buffalo NY, I’ve learned that down shifting in snow is far more effective than ABS braking by itself. When I look for a vehicle, I need to see that I have control of the drive system. That dial thing on the Sportage does not tell me what I’m looking for. So far I have not seen anyone comment on that.
@@geftiler2112 I don’t know about that. It’s a turbo engine and with hybrid. Don’t think it will be reliable for long term. Also the 2.5 is quite, quick and reliable so .
Hmm...I drive a lot for work, love New tech hence after 5 years a car is old to me. KIA works out fine because I buy lots of tech cheap and can throw it away after 5 years without crying about residue value etc. I just get a new KIA. For that weekend car, Cayenne's are made for that 😄
Great comparison! I don't like the look of the KIA Sportage but that's personal. I'm waiting till I can order the 2023 RAV4 prime with new infotainment system. Keep up the good work! Greetings from Belgium! 🇧🇪🇨🇦👍
Also something to keep in mind that may not get talked about which is leasing with Kia they offer the option to lease for 2 years as opposed to Honda or Toyota which make you do at least 3 years two three and a half years because a big difference
If resale value and long-term reliability are major considerations, its almost like RAV4 is the default choice. As good as Hyundai/Kia's hybrid system is, its not yet as proven as Toyota's bulletproof system, especially when it comes to resale value on used market. If I have to choose, however, I would definitely take the Kia Sportage because its an much better package. Overall.
The Sportage is definitely nicer, sporty, and looks more modern. I wonder if the 1.6 turbo would be reliable, long term. The RAV4 is proven technology, with good resale value, and to quote Zack, you will get your money back from the bank of Toyota.
Really nice interior on the Kia. Front end is way over the top. I’ve been following “cable gate” and Toyota really has to make this right for affected owners. I’m still convinced Toyota one of the most reliable brands though. Not a big fan of the RAV4 “Star Wars Storm Trooper” look though and industrial looking interior as well as the noisy cabin. I’m on stand by for a new vehicle, not a buyers market.
Andrea and Zack both said (a few times) that the Kia was quiet so I doubt the cabin is noisier than the Toyota. The Toyota's interior is so utilitarian, they are far behind many competitors in this area. I also would be very reluctant to spend my hard earned dollars on the idea that the company is going to "make things right" on a known defect. I have a friend that just bought a new RAV4 and spent over a thousand dollars getting the extended warranty to protect himself from the risk of a cable problem. Toyota should fix things now or I think they risk losing sales to their competitor.
I've never liked Toyota and seeing the interior of the Rav four confirms what I've always felt. Toyota had the ugliest interior of any modern car today.
The latest model is more lexus than optimus prime. Toyota have finally got their act together and there’s nothing not to like about their latest interiors imho.
Wife chose the 23 Sportage Hybrid SX Pretige Matte color with lifetime warranty one engine transmission including hybrid battery and 10 year/100k on bumper to bumper. Only regret is the paint because I gotta wash it myself 🤣
What of the service intervals for the Kia Hybrid? Here in Australia, the service intervals for the turbocharged engine in Kia is 6 months or 10000 KMs compared to 12 months, 15000km. Toyota wins in this regard.
Thanks for the review! So....living in Minnesota, where we get quite a bit of snow and lots of salt is used on our roads, the cablegate issues with the Toyota scares me. Might be moving over to Honda if I decide on a hybrid. Not sold on Kia!
Like your channel. Great comparison. I had a 2000 Tacoma, sold it because I traveled too much for work. Have a 2008 Camry with 237k miles and major issues, just regular maintenance. I'll be due for a new car/SUV in the next year or so. I honesty can I'm only considering Toyota. I buy my cars and run them until I need a new one. Don't see being able to do that with Kia w/o major repairs. Just my thoughts
DETROIT -- Hyundai and Kia are telling the owners of nearly 485,000 vehicles in the U.S. to park them outdoors because they can catch fire even if the engines have been turned off. The recalls from the two Korean automakers are another in a long string of fire and engine failure problems that have dogged the companies for the past six years. This should sum up Kia/Hyundai vehicles.
My man! Telling the REAL story here. People getting hyped about how well Kia has “improved”. People were saying that in 2012 when the optima got refreshed and look at them now, all dumpster fires that require new engines.
Been looking forward to this comparison Andrea and Zack, both cars should be pretty even maybe the Sportage might just edge it?, whisper Andrea was right ✅️
@@naveenthemachine While the latter may be true about turbo hybrid nonsense, it's not just for suckers. Great video Andrea! Yes You are always right! 😆 Don’t make Zack cough! 😆 I think Kia Sportage’s design is a winner over Toyota RAV4. And overall Sportage is a very an affordable! 👍🏻👍🏻☕️☕️ 🚙
Wait times must vary between Canada and the US for both. I ordered a Rav 4 SE Hybrid last month in Canada, not expecting it until June of 23. Daughter and her husband just ordered a Kia Sportage hybrid in the US last week..Expecting it at beginning of Oct 22.
I just took a look at the Sportage Hybrid SX today (late Feb 2023) in Tempe, AZ and was told to expect a $5k mark-up. The cars are also in high demand so they require a $1,000 non-refundable deposit with delivery estimated to be anywhere from 1-6 months.
I’ve recently advised two individuals to check out the KIA (along with the Toyota) as each where looking for this size of CUV. Neither wanted to even consider the KIA as an option, even if it were significantly cheaper, better equipped or nicer (interior). I was quite honestly surprised. Unfortunately for KIA (and fortunately for Toyota) is still struggling with an identity problem or perceived brand quality issues. Its too bad as the Koreans offer quite an attractive option looks and price-wise. Thanks for the video.
It hard to break a bad reputation when your vehicles are being recalled for engine failures, excessive oil consumption, and fire recalls for model years 2012-2020. Hell, even the 2020 G80 had a fire recall 😂
Thanks, A & Z! With OEs posting such great numbers in spite of all the supply issues why would they wish to go back to the old days of surplus inventories and money off the hood??
Competitive capitalism will drive them there to some degree. As an example, Honda has lost huge market share of new sales due to supply issues. Got to believe they are going to want to produce and incent enough to try and win most of that back as they overcome their supply issues. At the same time, Hyundai and others who have taken that share are not going to want to give it up. Car makers will produce enough cars to the extent they can increase overall market share/revenues/profits without letting margins get to low per car. Also, a car maker who has more to chose from off the lot will typically increase sales better than one who has les and longer order intervals.
@@andreaspencer9813 I just put a deposit down on Kia Sportage PHEV but looking forward to your review :} Your reviews helped me decide between the Tucson, Rav 4, and Sportage. Thank you!
Hi guys you never answered my email when you were doing the Toyota Venza I was asking you how come there’s no lock in the glove compartment but you never addressed it😞
I am from Toronto and currently in a dilemma to choose between the two. Sportage hybrid SX trim is bit expensive than RAV4 XLE premium Hybrid (with 2 year extended warranty), but Toyota’s higher interest rate covers it. So is it safe to buy Sportage hybrid full option in Canada without any extended warranty or better to go with RAV4 with relatively less features?
I think lot of factors would help you make decision 1. Do you want your car to look classy from both inside outside? --> Sportage 2. Do you want faster Pickup ? --> RAV4 ( bigger engine) 3. Howmuch can you wait ? Rav4 has atleast 1 and half year waiting , Sportage SX you may get in 6-8 months considering more people go for PHEV EX/SX Exclude warranty part from your decision for a second and make the decision. If you like Kia, you can always purchase warranty for $50K+ vehicle at the time of final paperwork.
It's a tough decision. Toyota is a reliable brand, but lacks "mojo". Kia (& Hyundai) is stepping up on their designs, warranty, and features while keeping prices somewhat affordable. Perhaps it's best to lease (???) How do these 2 vehicles compare to say the CRV or the RDX??
I've seen the Sportage a few times and it looks like a hot mess imo; as was said once on the old Top Gear show (about a different brand), it's like Kia couldn't stop designing it! The front end, in particular, had a very odd look to it. The RAV4 is by far my favorite in terms of looks; it's what I would call ruggedly handsome and would, therefore, still look good for years to come.
@@mementomori29231 how many owners of Toyotas died compared to those Kia/Hyundais catching on fire? The company even put out a press release to park outside of you have a garage lol… wait a minute? Are you a Hyundai/Kia fanboy or fangirl? 🤭
Sportage wins. It has superior handling and acceleration. It also has quieter and better cabin and controls are by far superior. The media, Android auto, Apple play, Bluetooth stuff is much better. RAV4 is more reliable.
Orange cables signifies it's use on high voltage hybrid components. So they are in fact part of the hybrid system. In the end Toyota is gonna lose and will result in warranty repairs and compensation. Toyota saw this problem only affecting certain markets and took a gamble.
Whish you had some test drive fuel comsumtion figures to add. Seen quite a few owners of Kia/Hyundai Hybrid who says the get about 24-29 MPG far from stated and that does not impress on modern 2022 hybrid.
I don't have much to go on, but I hear that the Kia is getting close to, sometimes better stated MGP (if they learn how to leverage the electric). I hear that the Hyundai Tucson Hybrid is a bit disappointing.

I have a 2017 sportage and it’s the best everyday/family car In my opinion. Here in the US the standard warranty is 5yr/60k bumper to bumper w/ 100k power train warranty. It’s not perfect by any means but there’s less compromises that I can live with.
Have you had to do any work on your sportage other than changing the oil and rotating the tires?
@@tophlovr 2017 currently at 68k. outside the usual scheduled maintenance scheduled items, just the usual. New set of tires at 45k, OEM Hankooks we’re trash and replaced the battery.

Love comparison videos!
Andrea, you’re right!
Awesome!!!
Siding with the Kia in the looks dept but Toyota’s reliability is tough to beat. Still would wait for a comparo with the new 2023 Honda CR-V.
Thank you guys both for having honest, practical reviews. So many of the old reliables are having issues, and so many of the formerly fraught manufacturers have really stepped up. I'd love to get your thoughts on who you think has the best longterm reliability these days.

"CableGate"...since your video, has now been resolved.
Both Toyota and Kia are legit companies although I am a little disappointed to see Toyota insisting that a cable is not part of the hybrid system. That's not what I expected from them.
Keep up the great work!
Jetta owner here with 163000 miles on clock, drives superb, had few issues, but it was minor
My rav4 is 16yrs old and needs almost no repairs just normal maintenance. Gonna buy another rav4. The 2wd doesnt have that cable so no issues there.
The Sportage has steering wheel mounted paddle shifters here in the US.
Yes you shift down using paddles on the wheels
I have the Kia Sportage 2.5 Ex trim. Not a fan of hybrid engines. And I always get compliments on how the Sportage looks.
The Kia Hybrid is far superior to the standard 2.5. Its much quieter, quicker and more refined.
@@geftiler2112 I don’t know about that. It’s a turbo engine and with hybrid. Don’t think it will be reliable for long term. Also the 2.5 is quite, quick and reliable so .
you guys are hilarious and i LOVED your informative video !
RAV4 is a great vehicle with out-dated interior. Kia is simply much better car now. 🚗
Except you know…when it catches fire 😂
Hmm...I drive a lot for work, love New tech hence after 5 years a car is old to me. KIA works out fine because I buy lots of tech cheap and can throw it away after 5 years without crying about residue value etc. I just get a new KIA. For that weekend car, Cayenne's are made for that 😄
All your video are informative and good
Can you do an informative video on Toyota Highlander 2023 hybrid. I am planning to buy one.

Great reviews of both cars and good infos. Andrea was without a doubt absolutely right!👍

Love them both...too bad I can't find one
Also something to keep in mind that may not get talked about which is leasing with Kia they offer the option to lease for 2 years as opposed to Honda or Toyota which make you do at least 3 years two three and a half years because a big difference
Is that us gal or ca gal there is a difference? 12:38
Toyota, king of hybrids…period.
If you like 1990's interiors.
Also, they don’t get stolen so easily like Kia/Hyundai 😂
Haha! Only Hyundai/Kias with key start ignitions are getting stolen. They’re all pretty much push to start now!
@@Seanheery It’s bad enough that there are teenage parties where they go around stealing them.
Just preordered a RAV4 Hybrid. 2-3 weeks delivery time
Do either of the two cars offer port injection combined with the direct injection?
Andrea is right. Like all women😁♥️. Love this couple
I wonder about the longevity of a turbo engine on a hybrid usage pattern - off and on.
I've never liked Toyota and seeing the interior of the Rav four confirms what I've always felt. Toyota had the ugliest interior of any modern car today.
I agree with you.
The latest model is more lexus than optimus prime. Toyota have finally got their act together and there’s nothing not to like about their latest interiors imho.
I really dislike the way they mount their screen. It just looks like a tablet taped to the dash.
Andrea, You are right. 😀
Just my thoughts
i worship at the church of toyota always

You're right Andrea... 👍🏿
I REALLY hope things work out well for the Kia Sportage. That’s a beautiful vehicle at a decent price.
Been looking forward to this comparison Andrea and Zack, both cars should be pretty even maybe the Sportage might just edge it?, whisper Andrea was right ✅️
I spit my wine out every time Andrea says Spor-tahhhjj... Yassss queen!
RAV4 Hybrid is de facto leader in its class.
@@naveenthemachine While the latter may be true about turbo hybrid nonsense, it's not just for suckers. The other brands are trash in this segment, Toyota may be known for reliability - but it nailed for the formula down in this particular segment.

We went with the Kia. Love it. The boomerang lights are really similar to a lot of new lights even on some American brands. 😅
Mpg’s are almost the same. KIA prices are lower too. I want the Kia Sportage hybrid.
Wait times must vary between Canada and the US for both. I ordered a Rav 4 SE Hybrid last month in Canada, not expecting it until June of 23. Daughter and her husband just ordered a Kia Sportage hybrid in the US last week..Expecting it at beginning of Oct 22.
What kind of suv do you film these videos in? It looks nice and comfortable for filming these TH-cam videos.

Last month I wanted to purchase 2023 Sportage hybrid SX , but the dealerships' are out of their minds with their markup adjustments
Note: neither individuals were car people (knowledge wise).
It hard to break a bad reputation when your vehicles are being recalled for engine failures, excessive oil consumption, and fire recalls for model years 2012-2020. Hell, even the 2020 G80 had a fire recall 😂
Toyota hands down
Does the Rav4 have wireless Apple carplay and wireless Android auto?
The 2023 model will have wireless Apple Carplay and Android Auto, the 2022 model has wired.

what about batteries, I believe only the more expensive RAV4 models have the lithium batteries, what about Kia?
Am so hoping Toyota picks it up. When will there be a totally new version. 2023 will be 4 years. Should one wait till 2024?
Everyone will say kia is nice, mazda cx5 nice, Hyundai Tucson nice, crv nice but eventually buy rav4 because of obvious reasons
You would be correct. It’s the best-selling CUV in that segment and possibly the U.S. It has sold over 400,000 units every year since 2017.
Great test and like both SUVS. I belive everything is good at your house but take Andrea dancing.
Will you be reviewing the Sportage PHEV or do you have any thoughts on it vs the Hybrid version?
We are still waiting for it to arrive, but will review it when it comes, looking forward to it.

I think lot of factors would help you make decision
1. Do you want your car to look classy from both inside outside? --> Sportage
2. Do you want faster Pickup ? --> RAV4 ( bigger engine)
3. Howmuch can you wait ? Rav4 has atleast 1 and half year waiting , Sportage SX you may get in 6-8 months considering more people go for PHEV EX/SX
Exclude warranty part from your decision for a second and make the decision.
Perhaps it's best to lease (???)
How do these 2 vehicles compare to say the CRV or the RDX??
Kia in Australia offer a 7 year warranty. Mitsubishi 10 years if you service solely with their dealers.
I see here in London Kia sportage on every corner. Today I met 15 of them on the road, mostly of green metallic colour
@@edwardvalivonis23 They’re better on the corner because at least it can’t cause fires to the home.
@@penvonjust like Toyotas who kill their owners with unintended acceleration?
The new Tundra, BZ4x, RAV4 gas tank issues… That old Toyota reliability is not what it used to be
You're forgetting about the 10 year 100000 mile warranty on powertrain and hybrid battery !!!!!!!!!!! Why aren't you mentioning this?
Whish you had some test drive fuel comsumtion figures to add. Seen quite a few owners of Kia/Hyundai Hybrid who says the get about 24-29 MPG far from stated and that does not impress on modern 2022 hybrid.
I don't have much to go on, but I hear that the Kia is getting close to, sometimes better stated MGP (if they learn how to leverage the electric). I hear that the Hyundai Tucson Hybrid is a bit disappointing.
I wonder how long the KIA will run reliability? There is a reason you can’t find the RAV4 anywhere.
Kia/Hyundai is Garbage, careful the engine fires don’t burn down your home.
You can’t find the Sportage anywhere either. Most dealerships are marking up more than $5000 for the new Sportage. I went to 3 dealership and only found 2 Sportage
We all know the answer to that…just ask the 8.5 million people affect by the engine failures and fire recalls for 2012 - 2020 Kia/Hyundai models.
