This short film introduces the work carried out by the wine-growers of the Arton estate (Gascogne) throughout the year in their vineyards in order to offer this prestigious drink that is Armagnac. The wine making cycle from harvest to bottling spans several months. It is the aging in oak barrels that gives l'armagnac its beautiful amber color and its very special flavor.
The Armagnac region little known for its wines
The Armagnac region is underestimated for its wines. However, two thirds of the Armagnac vineyards are dedicated to the production of tasting wines (12,000 hectares). Its atypical production-85% white wines, 8% rosé wines and 7% red wines-is linked to the tradition of Armagnac, a brandy made from a distillation of regional white wines.
This region has a temperate climate favorable to the production of expressive wines. The Côtes de Gascogne appellation includes around 40 authorized grape varieties, varietals from the Gascon heritage (Colombard, Ugni Blanc) as well as varieties from elsewhere (Manseng, Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah, Cabernet, etc.).
The Arton Estate | From vine to wine
The Arton estate is a vineyard planted with 8 grape varieties (Ugni Blanc, Colombard, Gros Manseng, Petit Manseng, Sauvignon, Syrah, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon). This diversity marks the uniqueness of our wines. Blended with subtlety, our grape varieties give our wines a very special character.
Colombard is a historic regional grape that is also found in the development of Armagnac. It gives an acidic and powerfully aromatic white wine with citrus and exotic fruit scents. Sauvignon, introduced about thirty years ago in the region, adds complexity to the blend.
The Mansengs, grapes with thick skin which resist the hot summers of the South-West, bring roundness and suppleness to the dry white wine. Harvested late, they make excellent aperitif and dessert wines.
Merlot brings Arton red wines notes of wild berries while Cabernet-Sauvignon gives them a scent of blackcurrant and toast. Syrah, on the other hand, exudes aromas of raspberry, spice and pepper which enchant Arton rosé.
The geological richness of Haut Armagnac, conducive to both white and red wines, makes it possible to reconcile regional tradition with a creative state of mind to express our terroir in an innovative way.
