  • Armagnac millésime - why does it make sense to vintage Armagnac ?

To raise Armagnac to the rank of the best French brandy by reintegrating it into the culture of wine is the exploit achieved by Arton.
Nestled in the heart of Gascony, the Arton vineyard is the champion of the renaissance of an appellation - that of Haut-Armagnac.
For Patrick de Montal, it is obvious: "Armagnac is part of the
wine culture". While, here and there, the habit has been taken to dress Armagnac in the codes of Brandy - XO (Extra Old) or VSOP (Very Special Old Pale) -, Arton has chosen a completely different path. Removing Armagnac from the culture of brandies to reinstate it into the culture of wine, this Estate-Owned
is at the origin of a true philosophy of Gascon spirits. A
concept as innovative as it seems to be obvious, as soon as we take an interest in the uniqueness of Armagnac. Unlike cognac distilled at 74° and even more so than gin or vodka (which are distilled at 90°), Armagnac, with its distillation at 54°, still has, at the exit of the still, many of the organic and mineral matter contained in the fresh wine and capable of evolving over time.
capable of evolving over time. In contrast to the category of Brandies, Armagnac is therefore part of the culture of great wines that sublimate with age in the silence of the cellars. An originality which has led Patrick de Montal to consider the vintage as the ultimate and most accomplished expression of Armagnac, which makes it the only eau de vie in the world that can fully justify it.
Awarded the Prix d'Excellence in 2017 for its Armagnacs, Château Arton has just given birth to a great "second" vintage, the Flamme® d'Arton.
These are excellent barrels (we have tended the vines, made the wines and distilled the Armagnac with the same care) but which we do not include in the "premier" category: while we leave the 'first' in a single cask throughout its ageing, the 'second' is a blend of different barrels from the same year. We had the same thought process as for the great classified wines for the great classified wines, which often include young vines with qualities that are
qualities that are a little less accomplished than the Château. Therefore we had to express the same vintage but under a different name: La Flamme® d'Arton.
