FULL REVIEW || Is the 2021 Mitsubishi Mirage the best one yet??

    Simply put: the 2021 version of the Mitsubishi Mirage is the best one yet. While the car is still the slowest of the slow, and the 3-cylinder 78hp engine still leaves MUCH to be desired, the 2021 Mirage now comes standard with forward-collision mitigation, automatic high beams and a 7” touchscreen. Mitsubishi also updated the front and rear of the Mirage, giving it a much-needed boost in the looks department: an hourglass shape chrome design now flanks the front between LED lights (on our SE trim), while the body panel molding out back has also been updated and thick black lines now surround each taillight housing. The Mirage also loses the GT trim level for 2021, and instead adds what Mitsubishi calls the Carbonite Edition, which is the third priciest model (ES, LE, Carbonite Edition, SE). The Mirage is simple and affordable A to B transportation free of fuss, drama or extra cost. And it’s 39MPG combined fuel economy is nothing to shake a stick at. But is more green in your pocket a good enough trade off for a whiny, wheezing engine and lackluster acceleration? You be the judge.

      I own a 2015.... its definitely bare bones. Point A to point B. I have no complaints though. I knew what I was buying. Going on 50k miles and its only needed new front brake pads (highway driving). Hasn't let me down yet. These cars are super popular in other countries because of the size and engine (gas saver).

      The former is because, objectively and comparatively, it is a terrible car. But people that buy it are under huge financial constraints and budget constraints, and so they tend to be biased towards their purchase. They also know what they're getting, its not like they are expecting Lexus ride quality.

    Love the color. The seat material is beautiful and looks very premium for a small car. I have owned 5 Mitsubishis and 2 of them were Mirages. I owned a 2015 Mitsubishi Mirage ES CVT and a 2017 Mitsubishi Mirage G4 SE CVT and absolutely loved them, great cars, super reliable, feature packed and fun and unique. I now own a 2019 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross SEL Touring with S-AWC I got new in October 2019. Ever since I switched to Mitsubishi in 2015 I am hooked. I have owned new Chevys, a Hyundais and Kias but when I made the switch in 2015 to Mitsubishi I just loved their cars and I really like their simplicity and reliability. They use time tested and proven platforms, engines and CVTs instead of changing things every couple years they do interior and exterior updates on the same underpinnings keeping the cars reliable. Keep it up!

      Yep, I've got one and it's amazing for what it is. Highest sustained mpg I've seen was 60 (slight tailwind), and it's not surprising to me if I get 50mpg puttering along a lower speed highway. Another thing they don't mention is that the acceleration isn't as bad as you'd expect for the horsepower; the CVT means that you can floor it, and maintain full power the entire time you're accelerating. No, it doesn't fully make up for having a more powerful engine. But it helps.

    Over here in Australia they've just been released with the Dynamic Shield upgrade. We purchased one only last week for work commuting. Not sure if its for the Right Hand Drive market like ours, however weirdly ALL the models here (which there are only two) have the side indicators in the front side panels and not the mirrors, there's no push button start, only remote lock and unlock and thankfully the rear camera is tucked up under the lip where the number plate is situated. I have the 2015 1.2 CVT Intense (almost top of the line) with a lot of options. 60.000 miles now. Zero problems. Only 6 tyres and 7 wiper blades. That's it. I do 50 miles to a gallon as the lifetime average. It serves me well. I was in a mountainous area with a fully laden Mirage. Then it struggles to accelerate quickly enough from stand still uphill. But doing 80 miles an hour for hours on the German autobahn was possible on cruise control, even on the uphill sections. I see why Mitsubishi upgraded the model. It looks nicer. But I still like the old models better. They were more faithful to the original (minimalistic and economic) concept. The 2021 Mirage is a bit heavier, has a bit more air resistance, is even slower and consumes substantially more fuel than the original ones did.

This car is surprisingly well build for its price. The panel and door gaps on my car are all perfect. The doors open with a sturdy click and close with a satisfying thud. Everything appears to be well put together. The 15 inch rims do have a stiffer ride then the 14 inch wheels but the look of the 15 inch rims make up for it. I love what Mitsubishi has done with the styling and am glad that they left the power train alone except that the highest gear in the manual needs to run a couple hundred lower RPM at 60 mph.
    I like the old school latches for the doors and hatch.
    I like the quirky little engine. As has been stated, a three cylinder is going to have this shake and sound as it doesn't have multiple cylinders firing at the same time like does a four, five, or six cylinder inline engine. If they went to a four cylinder with the less troublesome indirect injection and low cost, it would never achieve much above 40 mpg in any circumstance.
    As for performance, I traded a six-speed manual Kia Soul with a 1.6L 4 cylinder DI for this car. And while it was a much smoother power train, it was an absolute dog. On a hill at highway speeds, I had two choices: Keep it in 6th and watch the speed drop and watch it lug, or downshift and still watch the speed drop even as it sounded like it was screaming at 3500 RPM. Yes it would most-certainly do better off the line, but I never understood how Kia can claim that car has 130 HP and 118 peak ft-lb torque, bc I could never find performance in that car at any RPM that I ever took it. The Mirage 5 speed has much better drive-ability and gets about 14 more mpg along the same routes at the same speed for me. The Soul also did not come with cruise. The Mirage drives right up the hills with no fuss and far more satisfying even though the Soul had an amazing ride and good handling for a compact. However, those are not priorities for me as a commuter car. I want acceptable comfort and handling and ride, good drive-ability, good utility, reliability, and great mpg, and the Mirage has all of that covered and more.
    I would never spend extra on a cheap car for higher trim levels for extra goodies that have little to do with getting from here to there, as that would defeat the purpose of this car. As you pointed out, many of the most important features are standard on all trims.

    My Girlfriend got the mirage GT (canadian market) which is the top trim, and we both love it! It's not as slow as what the HP number suggest, gets up to speed good & can easily maintain highway speeds. Brake pedal just needs some time to get used to. The mirage may sound cheap & look cheap but when it's built FROM JAPAN, it's EXCELLENT QUALITY. I sat in a new Hyundai venue & DANG, whenever it went over small bumps & manhole covers it sounded & felt like it was crashing over them. The mirage may have less sound proofing but it's suspension is way better. Again Japenese built products are another level
    I myself drive a 2020 mitsubishi RVR 2.4 AWC limited Edition & honestly i like the mirage as much as (if not more than) my own RVR. I was scared this mirge was too weak but the sweet spot is at 2500 RPM & picks up speed easily without too much engine sound (and this is with me & my girlfriend in the car)

    I bought a 2020 5-speed for $11,820 and $13.1K out the door less my trade. I had studied this car for almost two years and am completely satisfied with what this car provides with respect to utility, transportation, handling, safety, and appearance for the money. Much has been made, said and written about how slow and crappy this car is, but I swear it performs twice as good as the Kia Soul 6-speed for rural, state route highway commutes. It merges in traffic more easily; holds hills in top gear better; and in general has far better drive-ability. Yes the engine is noisy until the road noise drowns it out. Yes; it makes transmission whining noises when downshifting to third and second; but if you want a cheap car that's cheap to maintain that also provides decent comfort, reliability despite what the lying, paid-off auto media says, good utility for an economy car with a great warranty; this is a great car provided you don't need a car for mostly 80 mph interstate cruising.

  • @BTin416
    @BTin416 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    Its a great car. Engine vibration is due to the 3 cylinders, nothing of concern. The black strip along the side bottom is good for protecting against rust from salt in winter. All in all, they've got a winner here: updated styling is on par with competition, the size of this vehicle is larger (more shoulder room, more cargo room, bigger back seats) than Micra or Spark. Since Honda got rid of its Fit, Ford got rid of its Fiesta, and the general industry push to put people in larger overpriced vehicles than they need (so they make more $$$), this will probably start selling even more.

When I drove previous model, the manual transmission, the engine is not really noisy that makes me forget sometimes to change into higher gear. The door handle is just right for us for most Asians since majority are not as tall as westerners, our average is 5'5 height. My only complain in mirage and maybe most of the Mitsubishi models is its aircon. After 2 to 4yrs of its use a problem will come unlike in nissan (the best when it comes to aircon department in the Philippines even if its an old model) and Toyota cars. I'm sorry but 0-60 in 13 seconds isn't just about performance. My used 1998 Ford Escort had a 110 hp engine that did 0-60 half a second slower. Highway driving? Definitely. But I was white-knuckling it down the entrance ramp to the highway, each and every single time. Yes, it was good, very basic, reliable transportation. And the Mirage SE trim clearly has more enjoyable extras than the Escort Penalty Box I used to drive. But I found myself consciously avoiding the highway because I didn't want to get run over by more aggressive drivers in faster cars.
    Around town, the Mirage looks like a great choice if fuel economy is a huge factor for an individual buyer. Looks easy to drive, and park. Replaced my Ford Escort with a 2009 V6 Mazda 6 sSport model. 0-60 in 6.5 seconds. I'm in the market for a new car. While I wouldn't mind a slower vehicle that's less expensive than my 6 back when I bought her brand new, in exchange for significantly better fuel economy, I'm sorry; I can't go back to my used Ford Escort days of being in fear of entering the highway in order to get to work. Just not for me.

    My 2018 mirage hatchback 5 speed Manual transmission can get 51mpg combined (I can achieve this especially on spring, Fall and Winter season) for summer season I'm getting 48mpg combined with the air conditioning is on full blast. And that is a great mileage for a NON Hybrid car. Low cost operation and ownership. Insurance rate is cheap and registration is cheap as well because it's a small car. I've been using a full synthetic motor oil, full synthetic oil filter, synthetic manual gearbox oil, duralast platinum maintenance free battery. The Engine is not sophisticated like newer Toyota cars. This Mitsubishi mirage engine is simple, reliable and economical great for city, urban driving. Long distance? I only tried driving 10 hours from Boise ID to Fort Collins CO. and it really fuel efficient and the car can do it. Being manual transmission with a small engine I'm surprised the car can handle the steep hill. It can climb not as fast as the other Big cars but this little car can do it. I can still drive this car on winter, harsh weather, snow storm without having to worry about 2WD car. I'll just throw some Hankook Winter Tires on all 4 wheels. And I'll bring a pair of snow tire cables just in case of emergency but I doubt if i really needed to use it because the winter tires can really handle the brutality of the famous and notorious Interstate 80.

      I live less than a block from a dealership. They regularly break out banners advertising the previous model year (when they start getting the next one- and they're mechanically pretty much unchanged since 2012 internationally, 2014 in the US) for $8-12K. Others report significant deals and rebates, too, depending on the financing and manufacturer incentives on offer at that particular time.
      You might want to check out the possibility of a better deal than MSRP, if there's a dealer near you. I don't know of anyone that's payed full-sticker, and they sell a ton of Mirages here relative to population (the DSM/Mitsu North American plant was here before it closed in 2016, and there's a lingering local loyalty to the brand here).

    I owned a 2014 Mirage for several years. It was fantastic for city driving, but not so fantastic outside the city. The small size was maneuverable and easy to park. The soft ride soaked up rough city streets pretty well. It sipped fuel. Out on faster and curvy roads, the true nature of this car shows. The handling was downright scary if I hit expansion joints or potholes while going through interstate on/offramp curves. It floated and bobbed around like an old Cadillac. The small engine struggled to get up to interstate speed and felt strained once cruising. I live in Florida where hills are small at the most and it struggled to maintain interstate speed with the cruise control. It was also very loud. A lot of road, wind, and engine noise. On the bright side, it was very comfortable for my small frame, had great features for the money, and with the rear seat folded it held a lot of cargo for a tiny car. It was also by far the cheapest new car I could buy at the time because it was $4,500 off MSRP. I would not touch this car for anywhere near the MSPR. At those prices, you can get a much nicer and more substantial Hyundai Accent or even a base model Elantra, which both feel like luxury cars in comparison.

      I do multiple roadtrips in my 2014 Mirage CVT. Yes, its a little loud but nothing my stock speakers can't drone out. These cars cruise nicely once up to speed @ 3k rpms but fuel economy does go down.

    • @jaxandmore440
      @jaxandmore440 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@kylemas2005 I sort of agree, but not entirely. If the road is flat, yes it cruises nicely. The engine doesn't have enough power though for hills or passing. If I set the cruise control to 65 or 70 mph, even the slightest inclines would make the engine rev up to 4500 RPMs. Very loud and tiring. The engine revs would also jump way up for casual passing. Every time I got to my destination after a highway trip, I could tell my hearing was a little impaired from the level of noise. For perspective, my current 2018 Hyundai Elantra with a 6spd automatic maintains the revs at 2300 RPM at 70 and doesn't require a downshift for a casual pass, even on a slight incline.

    The only issue I experienced with this car was when driving at freeway speeds over gravel, it seemed as if the steering wheel wandered a little which necessitated a tighter grip and more precise hand control. I rented one for 8 days recently and I normally drive a Kia Soul which has WAY better steering. Other than that, it was a cozy little car to drive for 8 days. And I drove it a thousand miles or more.

    Dad has 2 2017 mirages, one with a 5 speed manual and his wife has the cvt. They both really like them for the daily commutes. He's already pushed 60 mpg in the summer with his 5 speed. She is averaging high 30's low 40's with the cvt. Im 6'2” and have plenty of room in the front seat. My main 3 beefs with the cars is all the hard plastics with the piano black trim (particularly the one surrounding the radio and climate controls), the base stereo volume and sound quality and the bluetooth capability. Other than that a good economy car!

    Maybe I'm missing something, but at 6'2'', reaching down to open a door doesn't seem so bad, as you're going to be reaching and *getting* down a fair bit to get in the thing, anyway.
    Also, don't know about the sedan, but the 'spoiler' on the hatchbacks has always been there, on all of them. It isn't for styling or downforce, but to streamline the airflow off the otherwise suddenly-truncated back of the car. (Think of a tiny counterpart to those truck trailer rear fairings you might see on a highway drive.) Aero is for fuel economy on this thing.
    Engine shake: Yeah, it's an inline-3, it'll do that. Hell, a lot of smaller Toyota inline-4s do it. Below a certain displacement and power load (and the Mirage is *well* under that threshold), it's a waste to add balancing shafts, so you just let it mix the paint, and build the engine mounts to deal with it. (Honda really likes their balancing shafts, but let Honda do Honda.) You don't want to mount it *too* firmly, either, or the shaking transfers to the unibody and makes the passenger compartment feel like a vintage aircraft. It's not going to be shown off at the local Cars-n-Coffee, so engineers just let it rock around hidden under the hood. No problem.
    The backup camera: Idiots required all cars need them in the US. No subcompact needs that as a practical concern, but it remains as a regulatory 'feature'. Since they're not required everywhere the platform is sold (it's very much a world car), why would they re-engineer the stamped rear hatch just for North America? It's an econobox, so it's price-point sensitive, and this is a cost-effective mounting. "Looks like a wart on the back of this thing." -> NHTSA is a wart on the back of this thing. The overbroad regulatory requirement foisted on the public at large via glaucomic imbeciles trying to reverse swollen CUVs, SUVs, and cowboy-cadillac luxury pickups with only the rearview mirror is a wart on the back of more alert drivers. Put the blame where it belongs.
    Wheel Centering: Probably down to the electric power steering, as opposed to more traditional hydraudlic power steering. (Personally, on a car this light, I'd love to just have a manual rack and pinion setup, but I doubt the market at large would take that stock without complaint.) I'm used to manually returning a wheel from driving too many forklifts (some do, some don't), but I get this one.
    If my 2015 DE manual is any indication, it should overdeliver on fuel mileage, too- but we'll see.
    Overall, a pretty judicious review, subjective tastes aside (I like the older near-lack of styling). You seem to understand the segment and aim of the model much better than many. Thanks!

  • @stephE80
    @stephE80 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I dont understand reviewers who focus on the little things...knowing its an economy car with a small engine essentially "bare bones", i think people should review for what the car is. Not comparing to a larger engine vehicle or, especially, not comparing to luxury cars. As long as you know what you are purchasing, you will have realistic expectations and know what it is worth and what you may be able to negotiate. I just purchased a 2021 Mitsubishi Mirage G4 5 speed manual transmission and was able yo negotiate a fair price....only ~ 17,000 miles and in excellent condition. I knew what to expect and was able to negotiate a fair price with the dealership. Actually, I a surprised by the acceleration power thos little 3 cylinder engine actually has merging onto the highway. I know most people these days (in the U.S.) don't know how to drive a manual trans and those who do are usually looking for a gas vehicle (at least 4 cyl), but at thw same time these cars are difficult to find with manual transmission and I also know that manual is a better transmission. Therefore, I knew my latitude in negotiating, plus I'm too honest to give a lowball offer (which as long as the seller knows what they have, lowballing won't get u very far anyway). I am very happy with my purchase. Japanese is always the way to go in my opinion.
