I have been cooking for my Chihuahua since she was 4 months old. She eats about 3/4 cup a day. I did not think about the fish! I do add pumpkin & oil. Peas, carrots, green beans, broccoli, rice, ground beef or turkey. I make enough for about 5 weeks. I also make sure she gets scrambled eggs 2x week. She’s healthy & her coat is shiny. She refuses dry dog food. Great info here Thanks!
@@grammytrucker8525 kibble won’t help cleaning teeth. It is like human eating potato chips. This processed food breaks up the sugar and stuck in the teeth and only makes it worst.
I save and clean my eggshells. I bake them for 15 minutes in a 400 degree oven. I then put the cooled shells into a plastic bag and break them up into smaller pieces. I then put the smaller pieces into my coffee grinder that's only used for eggshells and grind them to a powder and use that in my home made dog food. That's how my babies get their calcium. I use a couple of tablespoons of it in a weeks worth of food. My Chihuahua and Chiweenie love my food.
My Maltese just got diagnosed with diabetes. They put her on a prescription diet but when I looked at the second ingredient it was dehydrated wood ground into a flour. I was paying $90 a bag for this prescription diet DW. Even with insulin, we could not get it under control. I went to Cornell and saw a nutritionist. Your recipe for your dog is awesome. My 5 year old service dog is going blind, I just had his bloodwork done to see if he was Diabetic. His liver is elevated a bit and his red blood count is down a bit. The vet was not to worried but I want to go help him as much as I can. I am going to make his food and I thought about milk thistle for his liver? How do you know or find out how much of these ingredients to add to each batch?
There are no regulations on the animal feed companies. They can put a dead and rotting horse in your dog food and no one would care. I would just. Make sure you sprinkle a vitamin on their food made for dogs if making your own food.
Thank you so much for this tutorial. My very picky rescued Bichon Poodle mix is having a hard time finding food that he will actually eat. I am going to try this.
I started doing this because my dog who is not too old has stopped eating, I gave her this with some extra protein source using chicken hearts because she was skinny and she is doing great
Cade Shevitz My small dog is picky-until we found Stella and Chewy’s Bone broth. It comes in a small red container. You sprinkle a little on top of their food and they love it!
That seems like a lot for a 6lb dog....our 17 dog gets 1 cup of homemade a day. I started doing homemade about a year and a half ago, and I used the guide that I found in a FB group. The "rule of thumb" is 2-3% of body weight.... so 17x16oz for weight of dog in oz is 272oz and then 2-3% of total is amount of food per day 5.44-8.16oz total food per day. She does still get healthy treats during the day... but if she gets more than about 7-8 oz of food/day, she starts to gain weight! I give her just meat/egg/fish and veggie... treats are cheese, veggie, fruit. She is thriving! I love to find out other people's recipes/methods. Always learning!
Hi- I love cooking for my dog. I don't think you can really screw things up but always question if they are getting enough vitamins/supplements. I get the calcium but what about other vitamins/minerals and what about flax seed?
Few things that are of concern: 1) You overcooked the chicken liver such that most of the vitamin A and D are probably destroyed; 2) Yet you did not cook and mince the veggies so those will just come out whole without being digested; 3) The canned mackerel is one of the fishes with highest mercury content so better to switch to canned salmon or sardines (use the ones canned in water with skin and bones); 4) Most calcium supplements for humans contain vitamin D. So, there is a risk of too much vitamin D when you just randomly add an amount to the recipe. You said in the video to comment and "tell me what you think". Please don't take my comment the wrong way and think I am just trying to be negative. On the contrary, I am watching a lot of videos and learning about homemade dog food just like many others. I am thrilled that more and more people understand that a commercial kibble diet is the root cause of many if not most pet dog health problems. It is important for people to understand that dogs need great variety and no one recipe should be the sole diet. As you said, this recipe is one of many that you feed.
Im sorry but I have to call you out about the rice. Brown rice is full of natural fiber, which helps a dog's digestion. It is also an excellent source of carbohydrates, vitamins and minerals. Specifically, vitamins D and B - essential to heart health - are found in brown rice. Minerals and vitamins essential to a dog's health, including calcium, iron and riboflavin are also packed into this superfood. It is important to have the right balance of these nutrients in your dog's food, White rice, while less expensive, is more processed than brown rice. That processing causes white rice to lose much of its nutritional value. In addition, your dog digests white rice much more quickly than brown rice, which may have an adverse effect on blood sugar levels. Brown rice, in comparison, is much more nutritionally dense, takes a dog longer to digest and is higher in protein content and lower in fat.
Agree to your comment. My dog was diagnosed heart murmur by a Cardiologist at the urgent care animal Hospital. The discharge instructions recommended brown rice, and avoiding grain free dog foods.

i've been making dog food for 35 years. ground beef, green beans, carrots, white rice and water. for snacks sugar snap peas and carrots. changing their diet all the time upsets their stomach.. i keep the same and they love it...
I'll bet your Little One would also enjoy apples as snacks. Oh yes ~ and blueberries. So good for them! Do you cook the carrots? My elderly girl wouldn't be able to eat them raw, but devours them when they're cooked and mashed.
Judy Travis.. Is that all your ingredients? I had a recipe that gave me anxiety.. Lol, because I was so scared to get it wrong.. But was feeding kibble without a care. Your recipe is very basic which I need .. Thanks
C Man egg shells are a fine source of calcium, I actually feed whole egg mixed with raw meat and organs for my gang.. it isn’t trash to a dog. It is MUCH healthier than store bought kibble where they cook all of the nutrients out, and then have to add them back.. why? Dogs stomachs and digestive systems were designed to process RAW meat and bones, not dried out kibble that forces them to drink tons of water because the food leeches all the moisture out of them.
C Man when they are grounded up like they are for my dogs, I have no problem eating eggshell. Read the ingredients on your dogs food.. how much of it is nearly impossible to pronounce? Dogs are not designed to eat grains like rice, wheat or soy. They are designed to eat MEAT and other natural meat proteins. Eggs with the shell, meat muscle, small RAW bones easily chewed, and organ meats. They can eat some vegetables, but unless you purée them, it’s going to come out pretty much like it went in. I’ll feed my dog what you call garbage any day over dry kibble
Just to let everyone know that eggshell is bleached to clean/disinfect it. If you ever been on a farm with lay hens you would never see a eggshell as white as the one you buy at the store. If you collect the shells, bake them and then blend it to a power or close to powder form it would be best. But who cares right
Question: do you think your recipe would cost more or less than the same quantity of retail dog food for same amount of time?? And does cooking the protein lessen it's good value?? Thanks, I am inspired !!
Great idea thank you for sharing we have a Maltese Shih Tzu mix and he is almost eight years old and getting picky about his food. I'm gonna try this and see how he responds too it.

Beef liver is exceptionlly high in vit A and my 16 lb schnauzer could only have 2 oz and not every day. Different liver have different amts of Vit A which they can build up too much and become toxic.
A pound of liver as your protein source... very brave. This would give my dogs the runs for days. I use a pound of liver mixed with almost 5 lbs of muscle meat, plus vegs, fish, heart meat, etc... for a total of at least 7 lbs of food. Would never feed liver as the main protein source... far too rich and probably too high in minerals (iron) to feed long-term. Check out Unlocking the Canine Ancestral Diet for balanced recipes! Glad you’re adding a calcium source.
Thanks for the new ideas! I’ve been cooking homemade for my small dog for the past year. I’ve been using brown rice, I will start using white, also the fish & beans great idea! I heat it up on the stove in big pot with bone broth for the calcium. I also use my food processor for the blending👍🏻✌🏻
Brown rice, domestic white rice is full of arsenic as is chicken. Farm raised salmon is toxic. If I won't eat it my dog won't! Use oats or quinoa etc but know that grains are not synonomous with carbs...grains are specific in key nutrients...yes, they are a carb but the same nutritionally as potstoes, legumes.
Suzanne Stoddard keep using brown rice. That white rice is considered a simple carb and raises blood sugar too fast and it will add on pounds faster. Also, a good multi-vitamin/mineral powder for balanced nutrition.
We had a small schipperke who lived past 16 years eating mostly people food. Let over veggie salad, fish, beef & chicken, Spanish rice, oatmeal, loved toast. It may not be popular but she ate very well.
Would add a good powdered multi-vitamin/mineral powder supplement (recommended by my vet)for nutritional balance. My son is a hunter and gives me deer meat that I use to make my dogs food pretty much the same way. It saved her life.
I have a 14 year 10 pd Doxie refusing to eat his dog . This will be my first try making him homemade food . Where do you get calcium pills . I want to make sure he get all his nutrition . Great video . Veronica K
Maggie usually eats before we go to to bed. Can you give quinoa instead of the white rice. . I use pinto beans.. I tell others about whole grain rice. I grind down the egg shell fine as a calcium substitute.
The fish..has salt? And the garbansos have salt? ...because i cannot find fish in can without salt.....do you know a specific brand of can fish without salt?
All canned fish I found are either salted, spiced and salted or with oil and salt. It's really hard to find anything unsalted. Even meat is salted and often smoked too. Shouldn't the broccoli and the beans be cooked? Is it okay to give the dogs raw vegetables? My dog refused carrots, apples and basically everything I tried except liver.
I have seen a couple of Naturopathic Veterinarians in Port Moody, B.C. Canada & they don’t recommend brown rice due to it is hard for a dogs stomach to break it down. They recommend a short to medium white rice, not minute rice, jasmin or basmati. And only a small amount, half a cup for a large recipe.
My mini foxy has a relentless itchy skin. Whilst we are in lockdown, I've considered making her healthy biscuits/wet food that may calm her skin. I have limited funds since losing my workability as a massage therapist. Do you have any advice or recommendations? She was on 1/2 tab 250gm Apoquol. This is very expensive. Why can't dogs eat onions? Thank you
Liz Bateman apoquil is so expensive My Morkie is the fussiest little fart, he too is on 2 a day at a cost of almost $200 here in Ontario Canada. Starting the food switch to see if we can change that. I have found He loves ground pork, sweet potato, kale and carrot, apple and two sardines but he won’t eat raw so I slow cook it.
My shi tzu likes to eat her food in bite size chunks. I always make a little bit of gravy with each meal. Since I have done this, she actually is eating.
I have been cooking for my Chihuahua since she was 4 months old. She eats about 3/4 cup a day. I did not think about the fish! I do add pumpkin & oil. I have an IBD dog. Vet nutritionist say brown rice is way more nutritious for your dog
Be careful with canned veggies as they may contain additives, salt is bad for their hearts
Frozen is better if not fresh.
Steam Fresh vegetables is ok, but canned is not. Fresh vegetable, and fruit, are better.

Only if they’re farm fresh eggs! Store bought eggs are horrible because they are treated with chemicals
If you're going to use the fish, calcium is already there within the bones.

Suzanne Stoddard keep using brown rice. That white rice is considered a simple carb and raises blood sugar too fast and it will add on pounds faster. Also, a good multi-vitamin/mineral powder for balanced nutrition.
Love this! Thanks!
Thank you for sharing💛💛💛
We had a small schipperke who lived past 16 years eating mostly people food. Let over veggie salad, fish, beef & chicken, Spanish rice, oatmeal, loved toast. It may not be popular but she ate very well.
Excited to try for my 5lb Porkie!
Good Luck on your new channel. I will still follow your channel. I have had 3 Maltese. Sadly, we said goodby to our Tiffany about 6 weeks ago.
Thanks Paulie! Sorry for your loss. I know it can be tough.
Would add a good powdered multi-vitamin/mineral powder supplement (recommended by my vet)for nutritional balance. My son is a hunter and gives me deer meat that I use to make my dogs food pretty much the same way. It saved her life.
Thank you. this video was excellent help for me to feed my chihuahua

That is she's 13 years old in Oct 2020!
Thanks so much!! This is great.
Maggie usually eats before we go to to bed. Can you give quinoa instead of the white rice. . I use pinto beans.. I tell others about whole grain rice. I grind down the egg shell fine as a calcium substitute.
Im gonna try this in puree form for my senior maltese
What should I feed mine. She has food allergies?
Mine has allergies to beef, chicken,Lamb & bison.
@@beverlywood8067 you could do fish, venison, maybe pork, rabbit, turkey & other game meat
I gotta try this.
@pavel mihai
@pavel mihai Why don't you get your own channel and quit spamming everyone here. We could care less for your comments trying to sell us something
Do you have to heat up the food or serve it cold to the dog?
So good !👍👍👍
Does not white rice turn to sugar?
Love it
What about Jasmine rice ?
I don't understand the percentages , how do I know how much percent of meat to give how to I measure it out?
The fish..has salt? And the garbansos have salt? ...because i cannot find fish in can without salt.....do you know a specific brand of can fish without salt?
I wouldn't advice mackerel, they are high in mercury. You'd be far better off with plain old sardines, or canned Salmon.
All canned fish I found are either salted, spiced and salted or with oil and salt. It's really hard to find anything unsalted. Even meat is salted and often smoked too.
Shouldn't the broccoli and the beans be cooked? Is it okay to give the dogs raw vegetables? My dog refused carrots, apples and basically everything I tried except liver.
what kind of calcium do u give her?
Patricia Comparaz it’s in the fish.
calcium pills over the counter and grind them as he stated it in the video
Does your dog eat it cold or do you warm it up first?
You mentioned mixing it up and giving her variety. But wouldn't you have to worry about "loose stool" doing that?
We've never had that issue.
COULD YOU SEND ME THE RECIPE FOR THE FOOD YOU MADE ON YOUR VIDEO PLEASE VERY INTERESTED
Great video,thanks
Can dog have tin tomatoes
Curious as most videos by actual vets recommend brown rice. Warn against using white rice.
Curious as my actual vet recommends white rice especially for upset tummies in dogs
White rice is processed to extend shelf life and has no nutritional value.
Rice in general has a long shelf life! And if you don’t soak grains for at least 12 hours it is better go for white rice!!
Do u let it get to room themp before serving it to her?
How do u warm it up once you take it out the fridge
May i asked..where did you get the calcium powder..i am making home made dog food also..thanks..😀
is in the video, he gets calcium pills over the counter and grind them
Would love to see your dog actually eating it.
Hi, do you need to reheat the packet of food each time you feed your dog? or just feed it straight from the fridge at room temperature?
Straight from the fridge
How many calcium pills did you grind up to put in the recipe
Can I use chicken hearts instead of chicken livers?
Thank you 🙏
How about for a 60 pound two-year-old Australian Shepherd
I mean how much it’s not a cup how much should I feed twice a day
My shi tzu likes to eat her food in bite size chunks. I always make a little bit of gravy with each meal. Since I have done this, she actually is eating.
I want to eat that
