Thanks so much for all you do to make Warhammer better!
It's honestly insane that TW2 lasted this long in terms of DLC, whether or not some have been trash/cash grabs. The sheer amount of time they've supported it for is virtually unheard of these days. Aesthetically the Ogre Kingdoms were some of the coolest models to me in Fantasy (and despite the very horrific start, I look forward to how they turn out in Sigmar).
I don't really feel any of the DLC have been cash grabs. At worst, maybe a little undercooked, but I think that has as much to do with covid and them diverting resources for III as anything else.
I'm glad that Mandalore sees the whole Salamander thing too... They even nerfed them again (but gave them a mutiplayer cost decrease to compensate! Oh boy!)
I think the nerfs were quite literally because they wanted to give it a cost decrease and not the other way around. Essentially, they down-tiered the unit to make it less of a commitment to bring.
Honestly, I think they should make it faster to recruit rather than cheaper. Cost is rarely a concern in SP, but not having to sit around for three turns to get one would make them a much more enticing option.
Seriously though, what happened? I didn't buy it myself because I found the setting so uninteresting, but it wasn't a bad game per se, right? Did Warhammer just blow it out of the water in terms of popularity or were there other problems with it? I hope they don't take this as a sign that historical Total Wars won't do as well as Fantasy ones. I want my Medieval 3.
@@BurniOwnz three kingdoms wasn't even a failure was it? Like I didn't buy it cause funds But it seemed like a decent game, and had a lot of dlc that seemed to add a lot to the game, so it must have done somewhat well to deserve dlc, this isn't thrones of Britannia we're talking about The thing that baffles me is that they didn't even have a dlc/start date set in the actual three kingdoms, like that way you can either start as one of the three emperor's who need to micromanage everything, or start as one of their governors/vassals for a more traditional campaign
@@BurniOwnz What happened? Nothing insane really. 3K sold better at launch than any TW game ever. Then CA tried to do its standard historical DLC and everyone hated it (i.e. a DLC set after the period of time the main game is set in, then one before that time, like Fall and Rise of the Samurai for Shogun 2). But they saw that the Chinese playerbase was demanding lots of smaller DLC focused on the 3K story line and lore so they started to do that, but then the western player base was demanding more substantial DLC that added actual unit diversity and factions so they started to do that but they never figured out how to sell any of this DLC and so gave away like 75% for free in updates and so no one wanted to buy the DLCs because they weren't a good value compared to the updates so rather than say they'd fucked up the DLC plan and needed to restart they just canceled all support for the game extremely suddenly after they introduced a bunch of bugs to the game they'll now never fix (and they had promised one more major expansion to a bunch of content creators to get them to do free PR for the company). So, you know. The usual CA fuckery. It's a real shame too since I can honestly say that the base game is easily the best TW game at this point. I too wasn't a 3K fan at all, but the game actually has the largest amount of mechanics and a diplomacy system to make it the closest game they've made that's like a cross between Total War and Crusader Kings (with a very good diplomacy system, though nothing great for internal politics), which would be my dream game. Even the Romance stuff with the super unit generals actually wasn't that bad since there was pretty good counterplay between the general types. Real shame.
@@BurniOwnz I think people are comparing it to WHTW2 in its entirety, which is silly because of the amount of work that has gone into WH2 (I've also seen so many monster hunter fans do this with World, a game that has been out for years with a fully realized expansion and numerous free content updates, and Rise, which has only been out a few months, it is absurd), but also because TK is good, but not as good as previous installments. It also has the typical TW bugs on release issues, poor performance due to optimization on some machines, and so on, that kind of spoil enjoyment. Also, I think that both TK and Troy skirted the line between fantasy and "serious" Total War a bit too finely. Both have rather absurd heroic generals who are capable of insane mass murder by themselves, apparently, which makes sense concerning the stories they are based on, but at that point you might as well go full fantasy and really just focus on enjoyable gameplay. I think many people expected TK to be more like older TW titles, like Rome or ME2, and as such they were disappointed by the change. Personally I think that WH2 is objectively the best TW I have played (and I've played all of them pretty extensively). But it doesn't quite scratch the itch that Shogun 2, Rome/Alexander, and ME2, or even Empire, do. My absolute hope is they make a 40K total war (could definitely do it by implementing the same process and just considering space as a "sea" between planets).
@Alexander Kentopp Three Kingdoms: Total War was another TW title set during 3K period in China. It had two big expansions planned (one of them even confirmed in blog post and talked) and some DLCs. Recently CA released a 3 minute long video titled: "The future of Three Kingdoms Total War" in which developers very strangely and corporately said that the expansions and DLCs are cancelled and the support ended. BUT they announced they are working on another 3K total war game. You can imagine this didn't really make people happy. And it is sad as the game was very fun, just needed some polish. There are theories why it was cancelled. If you are asking about the Lü Bu part, then he was an amazing warrior of the period and he has a campaign that is focused on fighting as many battles as possible and defeating as many heroes as possible. He gets a momentum bonus in which his movement is reset and he can jump on another army on the campaign map.
@@MrSpqr84 Honestly I am most angry at myself, since I really love the Three Kingdoms setting so I am awaiting the new game. Even though I shouldn't bother with it, but I still want it to succeed.

@@torquilleliphas8727 fr, I haven't played a vanilla TW Campaign in ages, always modding Rome 2, Atilla, and WH2. I think its weird that people harp on MP players for wanting a semi-balanced game, when you can easily make any army comp or unit work in vanilla gameplay with minimal effort lol.
true story, both grandparents on my fathers side used to not have a driving license, yet still drove around anyway and before you ask, both were farmers
On the topic of difficulty, I do think CA has gone for a “theme park” sort of approach with Warhammer now. They want each faction - especially the DLC Lords - to be a big power fantasy for the player, leaving it up to the few difficulty settings and player-imposed restrictions to generate challenge. You still have to remember that CA is in essence selling the dream of Fantasy players where their favourite lore character got a model, and they didn’t have to sell half a liver and a kidney to support it. Personally I would love for real challenging campaigns, not just awkward/weak starting positions like the three Karak-Eight Peaks Lords have, but at the same time I think Warhammer is at its best when the Power Fantasy element is the main show. Great review as always!
I think difficulty is generally fine, you want people to be able to play and not everybody is really good. Campaign is really not a place for competition. I wish more of them were unique though. Compare a DLC lord to a starting lord or an early FLC lord to a late one and there's quite a staggering difference in design.
Campaign players moaning about the MP community will never make sense to me. Oh boo hoo, your favourite unit lost 2 melee attack and 10 range. Now it's useless in campaign, brilliant😂

The scalie and the furry, and they done did the scalies dirty. Hopefully the lizard lords get touched up at some point either before or after WH3. I'd hate to wait 5 years before the lizard-tide becomes powerful and fun but it'd be better than them staying the way they are forever.
I mean the Lizardmen aren’t terrible, with all the units they got across 3 DLCs they have a lot of Different Ways to deal with Enemies. They’re dry to play in Campaign and they could use some more fun mechanics.
@@InquisitorThomas I think that is part of the problem, all of their good units are spread across DLCs, while sure this isn't major as if you buy one of the DLCs you're likely to buy more eventually, but comparing them to something like the Skaven (Who I'd say are one of the best supported WH2 factions), if you only buy one of their DLCs, you're getting a load of good units related to the Lord and fun mechanics.
@@bigboi8028 I disagree. Each LM DLC has some really fun stuff to play with, but their base game roster is also super fun. Saurus bullying very other infantry, air raiding fireleech bolas, laser artillery that can also stomp face in melee, several Stegadon variations, Carnosaurs being Carnosaurs, there's some good stuff there.
@@nerdyvids1 Yeah, the LM are powerful: their Saurus Stegadon stack is just as strong as ever. It's just that none of the campaigns have really brought any reason to not go with a saurus stegadon stack
To confirm - you get the whole Beastmen roster with this DLC (sans a legendary lord or two)? Seems worth the $9 for that, but probably not worth the extra $19 for the original Beastmen DLC.
It's always been the other race that has needed the rework more that left the lizards out because they've been basically fine from the start and carried by the units. How many people you can think of who hate dinosaurs after all. -In Warlock and prophet the skaven absolutely needed the units. Corruption and other campaign mechanic changes were pretty important too for the time, not to mention undercities. -In The hunter and the beast the Empire got it's much needed cat herding interface as it was literally the first race to exist and had no faction mechanics whatsoever. -Now with Silence and fury the beastmen are due their very, very much needed rework. Maybe one day the lizards will get something more complex than "build a building in two adjacent provinces" going and raise them up from being just basically fine.
@@CheekiTiki Nakai just got literally the funniest and best start position ever so I'm hoping that Lizardmen do get a giant rework. I'm expecting that Game 2 factions will get reworked in WH3 just as much as game 1 factions did in 2

@@DomisLomis This sounds like the state of Bannerlord 2. Even a year after "early release" and 7 years of "pre-development", it is STILL an unfinished masterpiece. Mods give BL2 legs, but the lack of substantial game mechanic fixes is very disappointing. The graphics are better in BL2 than BL, but it's still an unfinished sandbox game with no compelling backstory or native game mechanics to keep you coming back for a dynamic or compelling single player experience.
I like how even when 3 around the corner we still get more content and upgrades to the older content in warhammer. It's so weird in the main games like other total war games, those gets get close to no love yet Warhammer 1 and 2 get so much love. When it's a DLC farm at this point, the fact they still update older factions is really nice.
Part of me suses that in updating older dlc factions, is to not only drum up more hype for hero dlcs for that faction but for people who buy most of the dlcs, they will more happily keep buying dlcs if even the weaker factions get reworks in the future. Making you're faction dlcs feel more worth it because the dev won't ignore them. Also gets newer players with out all of the factions to get the older factions because they are not pointless anymore. All in all it sells more dlc and gets people hyped for a faction that you didn't have to fully build from nothing.

Now Chaos is the last race that really needs a rework to make this game complete... maybe a quick look on Norsca wouldn't hurt either. But all in all i'm really happy about the state of the game at the end of it's lifecycle. We just have to forget about sieges.
And maybe finally fix all the boring and broken shit that lizardmen have on the campaign map. All of their DLCs have been subpar in terms of mechanics and some of them are borderline broken like Nakai. This is the last DLC and the third Lizardmen DLC and they still got shafted hard by CA, instead dwarfs got all the love for some reason.
While I did love this DLC I do think the choice for the lords was really weird. I get that the whole theme of the DLC’s is Lord vs Lord but this one really seemed like a reach. Whatever campaign you play the other half typically dies before the halfway point. The only thing that even remotely ties the two together is the opening cinematic and the final battle. Like you said I think it would be cool if they fleshed out Oxyotl’s missions and maybe had some centered around tracking and halting the spread of beast herds, something a little more dire than what it is currently.
@@CallanElliott yeah the reworked beastmen are ridiculously good at snowballing. They can get the top tier buildings really quickly because each building is a 1 turn build with money and pop growth as your only limitation.
Oxyotl's campaign is underwhelming. The teleporting ability could be absolutely awesome -- the best mechanic in the game, even -- but it's so limited that it doesn't add up to much. You can only build one teleport building, meaning that you can only ever teleport to one region and to your capital. I wish i could build a teleport building in every theatre (lustria, southlands, naggaroth, and ulthuan). That would be the ultimate vortex experience imo. Vortex & mortal empires both suffer from an issue of scale. For example, if you play as tehenuain, it will take 10+ turns to reach the southlands, and even more to reach the empire. This means that you have very little variety between campaigns. You'll always end up expanding in the exact same way, fighting the same enemies. Oxyotl's mechanics could allow him to fight whatever faction he / you want at any time. Except the cap on the teleport building prevents you from doing so. Taurox's campaign is a blast tho. (I also wish that the coatl COULDN'T land. It would be cooler and more unique if it could zap infantry from the air like a reptilian AC-130.)

What I love so much about your criticism is that it's like you're giving it to both consumers AND game devs. You're constantly suggesting realistic, practical ways in which content could be improved directly, and your criticism always strikes right at the heart of why something is fun or not.
Still not quite operating on Paradox time, yet
I don't really feel any of the DLC have been cash grabs. At worst, maybe a little undercooked, but I think that has as much to do with covid and them diverting resources for III as anything else.
"Minotaur Teddy Roosevelt." Never had I heard such an odd but intriguing phrase.
Can't stop this Bull Moose.
I'm glad that Mandalore sees the whole Salamander thing too...
They even nerfed them again (but gave them a mutiplayer cost decrease to compensate! Oh boy!)
I think the nerfs were quite literally because they wanted to give it a cost decrease and not the other way around. Essentially, they down-tiered the unit to make it less of a commitment to bring.
more ammo tho
Honestly, I think they should make it faster to recruit rather than cheaper. Cost is rarely a concern in SP, but not having to sit around for three turns to get one would make them a much more enticing option.

Like I didn't buy it cause funds
But it seemed like a decent game, and had a lot of dlc that seemed to add a lot to the game, so it must have done somewhat well to deserve dlc, this isn't thrones of Britannia we're talking about
The thing that baffles me is that they didn't even have a dlc/start date set in the actual three kingdoms, like that way you can either start as one of the three emperor's who need to micromanage everything, or start as one of their governors/vassals for a more traditional campaign
Real shame.
@@BurniOwnz
I think people are comparing it to WHTW2 in its entirety, which is silly because of the amount of work that has gone into WH2 (I've also seen so many monster hunter fans do this with World, a game that has been out for years with a fully realized expansion and numerous free content updates, and Rise, which has only been out a few months, it is absurd), but also because TK is good, but not as good as previous installments.
That Three kingdoms comment still hurts lol.
And yeah. It was Lü Bu's mechanic.
which is why I call taurox moo bu
As someone unfamiliar, can you explain the reference here?
Don't feel bad, I still love three kingdoms regardless what everyone says. And lü bu was awesome!
@@MrSpqr84 Honestly I am most angry at myself, since I really love the Three Kingdoms setting so I am awaiting the new game. Even though I shouldn't bother with it, but I still want it to succeed.

-In The hunter and the beast the Empire got it's much needed cat herding interface as it was literally the first race to exist and had no faction mechanics whatsoever.
-Now with Silence and fury the beastmen are due their very, very much needed rework.

Dang, Mandy was spot-on with the Ogre pre-order DLC for Total Warhammer 3.
