When the first BFG:A released, my computer was so shit ships and the map refuse to render, so I have to direct engagements using only UI, Minimap, and ship's status bars floating amidst the dark void that was supposed to be the actual battlefield. I somehow had way more fun than a pitch black screen with RTS UI on it had any right to offer me. I mean it's incredible, I literally can't see shit yet I am having fun.

Honestly having gone through all of Mandy's videos several times as well as finally having made my way through the available VODs , some of them several times, just enhances the experience. Disregarding all of the #Lowry in-jokes, there's just so much to unpack. Then add all of the #Lowry insanity, Drunk Mandy, friendship onions and Avery in general - it's insane, I'm sad I have no one IRL to share in on the jokes and I don't even know if I could even begin to attempt to bring someone else into this mess. 7:12 - the angry beehive of small ships stops rather quickly once the Necron player has a Tombship with the Lightning Arc configured for anti-small ships. This configuration halves the damage output of its primary weapons, but that halved value is fired at EVERY ship in range. So if there is a single enemy cruiser in range, then it only does half damage to that one cruiser. But if there are a dozen small ships in range, each gets hit with that halved damage value
I was a bit dissapointed in that but they do look good and its a cost saver. So I mean its fine I guess even Total War: Warhammer did that aswell. With good sound and strong narration you can still bring them to life.

As someone who did play the original board game quite frequently, I'd say that they basically did what the Space Hulk guys tried to do by carrying some stylistic elements over into the strategy game, but BFG did it right. A lot of things (in particular the Special Orders) but also some of the maneuvers and odd mechanics like the scattering novacannon feel like a direct carryover from the tabletop. This was more obvious in the first game because of the much smaller scale and detail on each ship, but they still did a lot of mechanical decisions inspired by the tabletop.

I recently beat BFGA2's imperial campaign. At one point I overwrote my solo save accidentally and lost 7 months of progress. This game is so good that I immediately replayed that 7 months of campaign and enjoyed it even more. Nearly 300 hours I got out of it, the value for money in this game and general quality are god tier.
A swear Amarkun and Zaa are the best characters in this game. Amarkuns story threw out the campaign is so good and Zaas voice is it's own reward plus he's the biggest meme lord in the game after trazyn
I love how you are literally encouraged through gameplay to go kamikaze when one of your ships' destruction is inevitable. It's not only promotes an aggressive, hold nothing back kind of gameplay, but it just fits 40K so damn well. Fanatical Imperial captains ramming full speed into the middle of an enemy fleet in the name off the God Emperor is exactly what I want out of them. And since it's 40K, this works with every faction. Maybe some less so than others, like the Eldar, but for the most part, it makes perfect sense. One small detail through gameplay that fleshes out the 40K experience. I love it.
For the Imperium It takes decades and tons of ressources to build a simple cruiser. Many of them are centuries or even millenia old with a long and honored history. Some of them are equiped with old technologies that can't be replaced and all of them are sacred to the Mechanicus, their machine spirit being an incarnation of the Omnissiah. It's stated many times in the lore that the loss of a single cruiser is a tragedy for the Imperial navy, and they will go to great lenght to recover one if it has been captured. Expeditions have been launched to recover the wreck of a single battleship and whole armies and chapters will be mobilized to salvage ancient ship parts from a spacehulk. So yeah it's fun but it's totally not lore friendly. Exept for the orks, there you can go all kamikaze.
@@solwen Well in the sense of if your ship is fucked 7 ways to Sunday and it’s clear that it’s not going to be even limping out of the battle alive it’s totally in character for the imperium to go out in a blaze of glory for the god emperor than die with a whimper and let the ship go to waste.
@@solwenIn tabletop it was fairly rare for ships to actually explode (or implode), usually they left a "mission-killed" wreck that could still be salvaged. So all the kamikaze ramming made more sense

This is my space cathederal, its a healthy 10km in lenght and considered a cruiser. We have several billions of those. Don't even get me started on our battle ships."

The crashes are an unreal engine issue, I've had it on multiple unreal engine games this year (including this one), it's a very easy fix too if you're ever experiencing crashes in unreal engine related with a message along the lines of "Win64-Shipping.exe" forgot what the exact error was, but everytime it's the 64bit exe of the game in question. Go to nvidia control panel, set OpenGL Rending GPU forced to your GPU on your global profile, not to auto, EVEN if you're on a PC and not a laptop, developers of 2 games (Red Solstice 2, Deep Rock Galactic) also noticed it happend each time with calls from the rendering engine that it would crash, we don't know why it works, that's literally all you have to do and your unreal engine games will never crash with that error again. Do note that newer games and demos are often not recognized by the nvidia control panel so you might have to create a profile and apply the forced setting there for the exe, otherwise you'll still crash.

Its largely dominated by Starcraft, I've played several fun RTS games, but starcraft kept leeching the player base from them. It also doesn't help that bias of starcraft=good is in a lot of game reviewers.

In all honesty, in most cases a well designed game will retain their own player base. AoE2 and Warcraft 3 are also prime examples of RTS that have literally survived decades. Though in the case of WC3 Blizzard has tried their best to actively kill it. If the player count is dropping to the point of extinction and players are looking for their entertainment somewhere else, that's usually a problem with the game (and/or the developer/publisher) and little more.

This video is so nostalgic for me. My family had corona around christmas 2020, so I spent it alone in our summer house, and this video kept me company. Thank you mandy, makes me happy to see this again now
There is also a mod out called Skalgrim, that severely amps up the battle scale of things. They managed to unlock adding new ships entirely, so they've been working on adding a whole lot of ships to each race as well, adding a whole lot more choice and variety. A lot has been changed as well, to make large fleet engagements more brutal. You generally can't just like, sit in a cloud and pew pew the enemy from afar when the screen is filling with ork ships :D. The only caveat, is that if you're playing as the Necron, if your system can't handle the scale of the battle and starts lagging, 75% of their firepower becomes useless, because it scatters and never hits. It looks very pretty though while it doesn't hit. Still, for pvp and especially for the campaign, I can recommend it, it's bunches of fun!
It still counts as hits, just wonks out in graphical terms. And you can always slow the game down and that problem stops. But yeah, it can get laggy when you can increase the games to pretty insane sizes if you want. :) Thanks for the kind words! (/Creator of Skalgrim Mod)
I personally love it, and really, do they count? Because it felt to me like they weren't counted, I might have not seen things correctly! I stopped my Necron campaign for nothing! But hey, absolutely, it's been a blast, and it's more like, a goal to get a better computer and run it better, it was lagging for various reasons and I wasn't that far in yet, and I don't really wanna lower the scale, haha. One of the things that actually annoyed me about the campaign once I realised it, was that the AI fleets really don't function the same way as the players. They pretty much just auto spawn overtime rather than actually needing to hold planets and actually build up the same way the player does.

When the first BFG:A released, my computer was so shit ships and the map refuse to render, so I have to direct engagements using only UI, Minimap, and ship's status bars floating amidst the dark void that was supposed to be the actual battlefield. I somehow had way more fun than a pitch black screen with RTS UI on it had any right to offer me.
I mean it's incredible, I literally can't see shit yet I am having fun.

Honestly having gone through all of Mandy's videos several times as well as finally having made my way through the available VODs , some of them several times, just enhances the experience. Disregarding all of the #Lowry in-jokes, there's just so much to unpack. Then add all of the #Lowry insanity, Drunk Mandy, friendship onions and Avery in general - it's insane, I'm sad I have no one IRL to share in on the jokes and I don't even know if I could even begin to attempt to bring someone else into this mess.

7:12 - the angry beehive of small ships stops rather quickly once the Necron player has a Tombship with the Lightning Arc configured for anti-small ships. This configuration halves the damage output of its primary weapons, but that halved value is fired at EVERY ship in range. So if there is a single enemy cruiser in range, then it only does half damage to that one cruiser. But if there are a dozen small ships in range, each gets hit with that halved damage value
Fun fact: The cutscenes in this game were literally consisted of fan arts & official arts you can find on websites.
I was a bit dissapointed in that but they do look good and its a cost saver. So I mean its fine I guess even Total War: Warhammer did that aswell. With good sound and strong narration you can still bring them to life.

As someone who did play the original board game quite frequently, I'd say that they basically did what the Space Hulk guys tried to do by carrying some stylistic elements over into the strategy game, but BFG did it right. A lot of things (in particular the Special Orders) but also some of the maneuvers and odd mechanics like the scattering novacannon feel like a direct carryover from the tabletop. This was more obvious in the first game because of the much smaller scale and detail on each ship, but they still did a lot of mechanical decisions inspired by the tabletop.
That's a Good Thing in my book. Tabletop BFG was one of the best games GW has ever made, balance issues and all.

I recently beat BFGA2's imperial campaign. At one point I overwrote my solo save accidentally and lost 7 months of progress. This game is so good that I immediately replayed that 7 months of campaign and enjoyed it even more. Nearly 300 hours I got out of it, the value for money in this game and general quality are god tier.
A swear Amarkun and Zaa are the best characters in this game. Amarkuns story threw out the campaign is so good and Zaas voice is it's own reward plus he's the biggest meme lord in the game after trazyn

I love how you are literally encouraged through gameplay to go kamikaze when one of your ships' destruction is inevitable. It's not only promotes an aggressive, hold nothing back kind of gameplay, but it just fits 40K so damn well. Fanatical Imperial captains ramming full speed into the middle of an enemy fleet in the name off the God Emperor is exactly what I want out of them. And since it's 40K, this works with every faction. Maybe some less so than others, like the Eldar, but for the most part, it makes perfect sense. One small detail through gameplay that fleshes out the 40K experience. I love it.
For the Imperium It takes decades and tons of ressources to build a simple cruiser. Many of them are centuries or even millenia old with a long and honored history. Some of them are equiped with old technologies that can't be replaced and all of them are sacred to the Mechanicus, their machine spirit being an incarnation of the Omnissiah.
It's stated many times in the lore that the loss of a single cruiser is a tragedy for the Imperial navy, and they will go to great lenght to recover one if it has been captured. Expeditions have been launched to recover the wreck of a single battleship and whole armies and chapters will be mobilized to salvage ancient ship parts from a spacehulk.
So yeah it's fun but it's totally not lore friendly. Exept for the orks, there you can go all kamikaze.
@@solwen Well in the sense of if your ship is fucked 7 ways to Sunday and it’s clear that it’s not going to be even limping out of the battle alive it’s totally in character for the imperium to go out in a blaze of glory for the god emperor than die with a whimper and let the ship go to waste.
@@solwenIn tabletop it was fairly rare for ships to actually explode (or implode), usually they left a "mission-killed" wreck that could still be salvaged. So all the kamikaze ramming made more sense

The crashes are an unreal engine issue, I've had it on multiple unreal engine games this year (including this one), it's a very easy fix too if you're ever experiencing crashes in unreal engine related with a message along the lines of "Win64-Shipping.exe" forgot what the exact error was, but everytime it's the 64bit exe of the game in question.
Go to nvidia control panel, set OpenGL Rending GPU forced to your GPU on your global profile, not to auto, EVEN if you're on a PC and not a laptop, developers of 2 games (Red Solstice 2, Deep Rock Galactic) also noticed it happend each time with calls from the rendering engine that it would crash, we don't know why it works, that's literally all you have to do and your unreal engine games will never crash with that error again.
Do note that newer games and demos are often not recognized by the nvidia control panel so you might have to create a profile and apply the forced setting there for the exe, otherwise you'll still crash.
Why don’t they just patch it

Its largely dominated by Starcraft, I've played several fun RTS games, but starcraft kept leeching the player base from them. It also doesn't help that bias of starcraft=good is in a lot of game reviewers.

In all honesty, in most cases a well designed game will retain their own player base. AoE2 and Warcraft 3 are also prime examples of RTS that have literally survived decades. Though in the case of WC3 Blizzard has tried their best to actively kill it.
If the player count is dropping to the point of extinction and players are looking for their entertainment somewhere else, that's usually a problem with the game (and/or the developer/publisher) and little more.
I always hoping there is a game that has Endless Space 2 (campaign), Dawn of War (Land Battle), Battlefleet Gothic Armada (Space Battle). Three perfect mechanic combined into the BEST and Biggest strategy game ever

This video is so nostalgic for me. My family had corona around christmas 2020, so I spent it alone in our summer house, and this video kept me company. Thank you mandy, makes me happy to see this again now
There is also a mod out called Skalgrim, that severely amps up the battle scale of things. They managed to unlock adding new ships entirely, so they've been working on adding a whole lot of ships to each race as well, adding a whole lot more choice and variety.
A lot has been changed as well, to make large fleet engagements more brutal. You generally can't just like, sit in a cloud and pew pew the enemy from afar when the screen is filling with ork ships :D.
The only caveat, is that if you're playing as the Necron, if your system can't handle the scale of the battle and starts lagging, 75% of their firepower becomes useless, because it scatters and never hits. It looks very pretty though while it doesn't hit.
Still, for pvp and especially for the campaign, I can recommend it, it's bunches of fun!
It still counts as hits, just wonks out in graphical terms. And you can always slow the game down and that problem stops. But yeah, it can get laggy when you can increase the games to pretty insane sizes if you want. :) Thanks for the kind words! (/Creator of Skalgrim Mod)
I personally love it, and really, do they count? Because it felt to me like they weren't counted, I might have not seen things correctly! I stopped my Necron campaign for nothing!
But hey, absolutely, it's been a blast, and it's more like, a goal to get a better computer and run it better, it was lagging for various reasons and I wasn't that far in yet, and I don't really wanna lower the scale, haha.

One of the things that actually annoyed me about the campaign once I realised it, was that the AI fleets really don't function the same way as the players. They pretty much just auto spawn overtime rather than actually needing to hold planets and actually build up the same way the player does.
