Thanks for the video. As far as changing/adding the RAM if anyone is interested, it's pretty self-explanatory if you look at the one(s) already installed. And if you lookup how to change RAM, it's pretty direct. The most involved part here is opening and closing the laptop enclosure.
Man! After doing this, I fondly remembered upgrading ram in my old Compaq. All it took was removing one screw and opening a door underneath to expose the ram. Job done!
Thanks for your help. My friends laptop had too much coffe, so we had to try to dry it out. Thanks for showing us how to get inside - following your guidance it is easy :)
My HP Pavilion "Beats" model (the red and black one) is even harder than this. After getting all the screws out and prying the surface up, I had to disconnect a bunch of little ribbon cables to get the keyboard separated and then take the motherboard all, or mostly, out in order to install the RAM. I was able to spot the RAM slot by lifting the motherboard enough to press the new 8gb module into the slot. It's a hard laptop to work on. Also note that there is a screw that is visible once the DVD drive is removed. It is a flat silver screw. That one will easily strip, so be very careful. A #000 Phillips screwdriver, and working very slowly, is best for that screw.
Just checking this out since I'm looking into getting a new laptop or upgrading my gaming Pavilion. Thank you for sharing your help & expertise. :) Much appreciated!
Did it and had no issues. Only difference was on the optical drive side. After the optical drive was removed as illustrated there were two silver screws needing a fine tip Phillips head screwdriver to remove. Done and satisfied. Thank You AT for posting.
Thanks for the video! I have trouble opening the cover of HP Pavilion Gaming 15 for a long time and even HP how-to supports doesn't help much. Your video helped me a lot, thanks again dude.
Thanks for this. My wife has it, but bloody hell it had a slow HD; even she got frustrated. Upgraded as per your vid and went well, now I have a spare 2TB HD for external storage and she has a fast SSD. Totally different to my Dell XPS upgrade as that was a lot easier.
Thanks so much for this video, even if it is over 5 years old it was extremely useful for a slightly different 17-g019na pavilion. With your help (even though taking the back apart was very daunting at first) I managed to give my laptop a new lease of life...upgraded the ram from 8GB to 16GB, changed the slowwwww 5400rpm HDD to a 500GB SSD, replaced the battery with a new one, gave the insides a good clean and lastly, updated the OS from Windows 7 to Windows 10 all for £100. I really didn't want to get rid of the laptop as it has a GeForce 940M 2GB dedi gfx card, which is pretty old these days, but still good for a laptop that's not made by a proper gaming brand imo. Now I can play my games on the laptop in the living room while the wife watches TV, instead of hiding away in the office apart from each other all the time - brownie points for me!
Perfect thanks. My other laptops have simple compartment covers to get at the HDD etc but my HP is exactly the same as this. Bit daunting when I saw all the screws. Wouldn't even attempted if I'd not seen this video. Thanks.
this is surprisingly easy on most laptops. as the guy said, two metal pins are holding onto the memory. use the plastic prying tool to carefully pry both pins up. once both are lifted, you can easily remove the memory itself. you can do the same for the other one since there are two slots, so that's four metal pins you have to lift up in total. remember to be careful in doing so. then place the new ram you just bought. make sure to install it correctly, and that it has a solid connection, it'll be like connecting a puzzle piece. once you're done, push the pins back down (no prying tool required this time) and you're good to go! there's also videos on youtube that show how to do this, and you don't have to be specific on it being a hp pavilion notebook. as i said earlier, this kind of method is applicable to most laptops, including this one.
Taking apart that case is 99% two little clips on the memory stick holder pops it out, or you can add to the second slot. Just make sure the Ram is going in the right way until it clicks. But that case is the job!
nice video. I followed step by step what you did and there is a cable on your computer that I don't see in mine. 1st of all, my computer can't turn on, it may be because of that cable. at 2:05 on your video, the yellowish or kind of orange cable just below the RAM, what is that cable used for and where can I get it.
Thanks Andrew, Made the job a lot easier, Newer HP 15 l(15-ba138ca) laptops hide two screws under the rubber feet on the back. I didn't even give that 1TB drive a chance, out it came, Now a memory upgrade, LOL.
Everything was OK until I separated the top (keyboard) from the base (about 1:50 into the video) Your video shows a clean separation - BUT my model (HP Pavilion 17-1232nr) had 3 cables attached from the top portion to the bottom... one I believe is for the keyboard (very wide - P/N 9Z.N9HSQ.701 on the cable) and 2 skinnier ones; one from the power button & the other from the motherboard to the touchpad. I have not worked on a laptop before - so i want to be sure if i disconnect them, they go back correctly. Any sugestions or advice? Thanks!
Michael Reeves same here, there were 2 for me, found that strange didn't know if it had something to do with me bashing the laptop open or not, yes you can disconnect them, although you might be in for a struggle connecting one of the three.
This video helped with installing my new hard drive which I've never done before Thanks. Would you know how to install a new wifi adapter on this laptop?
Thanks a bunch, I really needed this. Is it possible to transfer the stock Windows license to the new hard drive? Or would I need to buy a new license? I already found it using a product key finder, but do I just type it in at the windows activation, or do I need to back something up? I’m kind of afraid to do this until I know how to do this.
Can the graphics card be upgraded? I just got my hands on the Star Wars notebook and much like the Falcon, want to make some modifications. It's the one with the Nivida graphics.
Thank you for the quick reply. BTW Those screws are very difficult to remove as they are very soft and tiny. When you try to remove the threads starts chipping off.
Hi I bought a Pavilion 14 , not realising it had no hard disk just a M.2 gum stick.... anyway I wanted to fit a hard drive. Looking inside the laptop it didn't have the SATA connector or mounting bracket for a hard disk. I looked up the part numbers and they were next to impossible to buy. Do you know if the same zif connector is used for this as I think i can get envy 17 connector and it looks like it may work and its fairly cheap, have you ever had to add this internal SATA connector ?
Guys help... I've stripped the screw that's under the optic drive... I've tried all types and tips of screw drivers and it's not budging... It was too tight although the other one was already taken out with relative ease... What do I do?? It's the last screw before I can open up my laptop to install ram
great video! im about to buy an hp laptop i7 5500u 5th generation. ive got one question, are good that kind of lap?? there are any problem with the heating while playing videogames ?? thank you a lot
How do I buy a piece for the black component with the silver pins on the side. Mine only came with one so I was only able to upgrade one slot of ram even tho there is space for another.
Andrew, loving the videos. I'm between the Dell 7559 and the HP Gaming laptop you've reviewed. I can't afford upgrades so it would be out the box spec. I k ow the HP has the better CPU and the Dell the GPU but which overall would be your choice?

Hey guys I have a question, does the hp core i3 x360 7th generation notebook use a different hard disk from the other laptops in terms on physical size?
I can't take the optical drive out. There is still one more screw fixing the optical drive to the mother board. There is no way I can open this up. Help!
So ... I added my extra ram, but when I turn it on , it doesn't show up in my PC info . It just shows it has 8 still. But in reality I added and 8GB. So ... did I not add it right ?

I followed your steps & had no issues upgrading my Ram on Hp Pavillion 17t
Was yours using both sides (2 4gig sticks) or just one 8gig???
I'm a photographer that's about to beat my own neighbor up due to the bad computer lag after installing some editing software..

Yup, I used #00 screwdriver on that flat head screw and got it stripped. That one is tricky.
topgrain did it have a open slot or was it full i have the same laptop
Shit. I have the silver beats model. I'm just gonna say fuck it and not try after reading this comment

Best video ever. Sound and video quality. I changed my HDD for SSD just easy like author of this video. Thanx buddy.
Thanks for the feedback and support. I appreciate it. 😁
@@Eternal2007 can you upgrade a HP pavilion 2017 17.3" 4GB ram in the same way?? ANd can you install SSD??
Thanks that was helpful, I would have never thought to look under the two little tabs.
Excellent video! Thank you. You have a great voice and manner of speaking for a tutorial video.
do more of this your video quality is the best out there when it comes to upgrades
It will be very helpful to include the model number, since there are many HP Pavilion laptops.
Hp made this hard I'm scared to attempt this because I don't wanna break my star wars laptop
lol i started taking mine apart before watching any vids and i panicked and completely stopped. I feel a little more confident after this video.
Thomas Barnhart where you get the ssd from please?
Easy as eating pie.
@Christopher Villanueva 3 years later and i try to upgrade it and i pry it open after 12 hours and i crack it :( Edit: I had a different laptop.
If you can't pop a RAM chip out you'd never get the back off the laptop. Excellent video mate. Nice one.
Thank you so much bro! What kind of SSDs does this Pavilion support?
Well done Andrew! Thanks for taking the time to make this!
Great video dude. I was about to pry the laptop open before removing the rubber feet screws.
Useful video, but 24screws and prying to open up base
Seriously hp? -_-
+Raunak Basu Thanks bro.. Yeah, HP made it so hard to upgrade.
But that only makes more determined.
Raunak Basu HP=shit
Don't pry it go to where the little things that holds it
Great video, thx for the help. Worth a mention, my 17-G149CY only had 23 screws. I installed 16gb of ram. Next will be the HDD.

That voice is so soothing

Superb Vid, nice and simple. Well done.
Thank you. 😁
This has been very helpful👍
Brilliant video, I have the star wars one but it's painfully slow - what kind of hard drive is best to upgrade too??
Thanks. I would recommend a Samsung SSD drive for the best performance.
Andrew Tran thanks I'll get one and attempt it tonight!

It should be very similar.

+burrbit Thanks Bro. :)
great video! im about to buy an hp laptop i7 5500u 5th generation. ive got one question, are good that kind of lap?? there are any problem with the heating while playing videogames ?? thank you a lot
That will not be good for gaming because the processor is the U series, meaning dual core.
How do I buy a piece for the black component with the silver pins on the side. Mine only came with one so I was only able to upgrade one slot of ram even tho there is space for another.

+kshitij gulati did your laptop have an extra ram slot for 1600mhz 4gb ram?
+kshitij gulati You have to get a MSata SSD which is faster. The port is the one with the white ribbon cable that comes out very close from the RAM.
Did you add the SSD drive here? I have the same problem
I have the nvidia model. Would a SSD EVO 850 work out? Samsung has it for 250GB.
Ok Andrew, tomorrow, I'll go to Geek Squad, to have them install a better hard drive ( I have the hp limited edition Star Wars notebook ). Ok cool. I would go with a Samsung 850 drive for your SSD. Do you have the model with the Nvidia GPU?
+Andrew Tran what is the ribbon cable for?
Hay my response is very old, but I had the work done on my PC. I now play Battle Front Star Wars Thanks
how did you kill it? iod be nice to do ESD?

Hey boss, I know this video is years old but would lov to know if it's possible to upgrade the CPU on this thing as well?
wow. Really that easy? No terminal work needed?
Yup. It was not too bad.
Thanks for the video but does that affect the Biose and how to install Windows
Bios? As far as I know the ssd/hard drive affects the Windows stuff, but if you copy everything to your new ssd/hard drive you should be good.
Hey Andrew, nice helpful video! I was wondering if I could use something else (as a credit/membership card for example) instead of the pry opening tool, since I do not have one of those around right now
Hi Andrew, may I ask how you removed those plastics covering the two screws at the back?
+Yohasakura It's just a plastic sticker, just cut it or use small needle to remove it. It may looks scary like you are ruining your laptop cover but it actually is a sticker. I've already remove and throw it away.
What was the upgrade hard drive you installed in this video?
My machine does't turn on after shutting down. Power button led is on as well as power led on right side. Can you tell me please what could be issue? Thanks again.
Is the OMEN the same way cuz I am ordering one this weekend?
Sir does this machine has a M.2 Slot for to put a SSD ? PLEASE DO ANSWER
This is probably a stupid question but i dont know anything about computers. I have the Star Wars one and If i get the hard drive replaced will it still have the sound effects it comes with and the other content like the wallpapers, storyboards, etc.?
:( i didnt know how easy it looked so i brought it to a repair shop. is $260 a fair price?
question can you test it befor the bottom is snapped back?? also how do you clone the old drive onto the new one???
EZ. Get Apricorn DataTransfer cable and clone software (DVD or download). Load software, connect new HD to laptop with cable that has USB end. Answer a couple of questions about preferences, run and an hour or two later it's done.
Can you do a review on this laptop
+Christopher Dinh Yes.
So was that dual channel ram ? Looks like there was two slots.
Has the mainboard a slot for M.2 SSD Hard Drive ?
I have an HP 17 -g121 /64 bit notebook, amd processor w/ 8 gig ram (2/4 gig chips) but want to change those out and make it 16 gigs. Though it does not say it, can my laptop be upgradable to 16 gigs...
question, will this upgrade improve gaming performance?
Yes. Depending on some game things.
hey please help me with opening hp 15 ab202tx I am getting problem opening the uper part with that is plastic tool is used , I beleive it stuck where dvd is ,
Where did you buy the skin from?
So is there just one slot for ram? I need a 16gb stick or is there two so i can add another 8gb stick?
does this work for HP Pavilion 17-G121WM and what about cpu options,
Thanks
Wherever my ram chip is, opposite of it theres another empty space where i can put another ram chip in. Will it stack with my other ram chip or no?
Hey Andrew (or anyone!) would it possible to upgrade the ssd as well?
Hey guys I have a question, does the hp core i3 x360 7th generation notebook use a different hard disk from the other laptops in terms on physical size?
have you even tried to upgrade the wifi card to ac networks
can you give link for hard drive and ram for this upgrade?
Hey umm can i swap out the dvd drive with a hard drive caddy!? that way i can install an ssd in there and make it hybrid?!!?
+ME DAVE I don't think anyone has really done this, so you'd have to try it out and find out for yourself. The motherboard might not support this
+OhMyGodAWhale okay thanks ):
ME DAVE you can but it won't be supported. Hybrids are not better than SSD anyways.
How to remove those white little star screws in the CD part?
how do you remove the battery it doesn't go by me
Helped me alot thanks :)
I can't take the optical drive out. There is still one more screw fixing the optical drive to the mother board. There is no way I can open this up. Help!
Hey. What kind of ram do these take? DDR4? DDR3!
So ... I added my extra ram, but when I turn it on , it doesn't show up in my PC info . It just shows it has 8 still. But in reality I added and 8GB. So ... did I not add it right ?
can I do this even with the touch screen star wars edition that has nvidia gpu?
yep aslong as it's a pavilion
Did different brand effect on ram ?
Could we upgrade the GPU as well?
What happends to the OS when you change the hard drive?
where do I get a plastic pry tool like that?
at most hardware stores
