Dacia has officially confirmed that the Spring will be coming to the UK in 2024, with an 'enhanced' version which has improvements in design and equipment over the current car. The basic hardware - battery, motor, etc - will be the same though.
The five-door supermini has proved a resounding success throughout Europe, with more than 120,000 customer orders placed since its launch.Three quarters of all sales have been to individual private customers rather than fleets, with Spring is the main means of transport during the week for households, even when there is another car they can use.
There is a choice of two variants - the Spring Extreme ELECTRIC 65 and Spring Essential ELECTRIC 45. Besides the extra power in the 65, which we'll get to later, the Extreme has some funkier bits of trim inside and out which are designed to make it look more rugged.
The 26.8kWh battery isn’t huge by modern standards but is bigger than the first generation Nissan Leaf’s and gives the little Renault an official range of 140 miles in mixed conditions, with a few more in town. Charging is via a three-pin plug as standard, although this takes 14 hours to fully fill the batteries.
A wallbox cuts that time to five hours, while DC rapid charging is an optional extra. It can only accept a maximum of 30kW but will take the power pack to 80% in less than an hour. The real disappointment is the lack of any regenerative braking capability. This is a key part of all other EVs and adds noticably to the efficiency, as the braking energy get put back into the battery. But it’s expensive and this car is all about keeping cost low. So you still have to brake yourself, like with old-fashioned petrol cars.
The other sacrifice for the low cost is around safety. The little Dacia scored just one star in the independent Euro NCAP ratings, although interestingly this is actually better than Renault Zoe!

I own a Spring 45 for 17 months and from my experience so far I can tell you this: 1. for daily city comute is quite OK. Driving around the city does not require any more hp because up to 60km/h is quite nimble. 2. The regen is working in two ways: one way is when you take the foot off the acceleration it starts to regen, and the other way is when you break gently it starts to regen. Both ways are shown on the dashboard. 3. If you use it for work, like me, you will find that the large booth capacity is really helpfull and important. 4. Currently we can still drive 240 km and still have 10% left on a full charge. However I found that is best to operate it between 20 - 90% battlery charge. Have a nice day !
Got the new version 3 wks ago. Living in France, took advantage of the scheme here and traded in my 21 yr old Toyota diesel. Absolutely love it. I live in the countryside, winding lanes, narrow and hilly. A round trip of 20 km to the nearest petrol station. I charge from a box at home, 3 hours. But it would charge o/night if required. No problem. I am quite small but can honestly say haven't noticed lack of space inside - the dog has the back seat. Enjoy driving it, nippy enough and great to park. Sorted.
Can I just ask is it true that in France, the french just run there cars until they break and don't worry about second-hand car values.

@@kaliquebolemtitusabrasax4404 That would be nice, but where I live and I've been here over 16 yrs the French do take care of their cars. But they don't have the same need to get new cars that we seem to have. Second hand car values are really high, even if the car has high mileage.
@@trixiepickle8779 I only ask, since I was watching an episode of the grand tour with, Jeremy Clarkson, they were suggesting that the french just have no regard for their cars and that they just run it and run it till it breaks, then just go by another one and it doesn't matter to them the condition of the car since the french just consider it nothing more than a tool, but I genuinely didn't know whether this was a joke or if they were speaking more about parisians, rather than France as a whole.
Nah I think this is the usual claksonian nonsense. French people I’ve known tend to maintain their cars pretty well. Yeah if you own a small car in Paris you’ll probably delay a trip to the body shop after a small ding but there’s a pretty good reason why there are still plenty of good 80s and 90s cars on French roads.
I have 2 Spring, 1 45hp version and this Extreme, the 45 hp is enought for everything, I use it 90% on highway, i did Sopron-Budapest trip with 15 min CCS, and i did also on the 1. day Transylvania-West Hungary trip also. After 10 months in the clock is 30.000 km, this week i have to go to the service after 30k km, it will cost 80 euros.
Ohhh, and i bought it for 8900 euros, the Extreme was 13600....

Just picked mine up a couple hours ago. I got the Extreme 65 version for a little under €23k and with the €8k that we get back in subsidy here in Luxembourg it will come in under at just under €15k. Can't really complain at that price. Obviously I've only driven it home from the garage so far but it seemed nice enough to drive. As it's our second car it will only be used to get me to the office a few times a week and maybe a short supermarket run. Looking forward to driving it some more, be interesting to see how it copes on the motorway.
I got mine 3 weeks ago, it cost me here in France just under €18 k (€7500 subsidy inc trade in of old diesel) as I ordered a charge box and a few bits and pieces with it. I drove it home from the Dealership along the motorway and it was fine. Speed limit is 110 km anyway and it coped easily with that. Enjoy.
i love how they are 3k expensive in Lux than in my country , but the subsidy makes it 15k in both countries
We hired one of these for a few days in Nice through Renault's Mobilize app. It was a great fun wee car to drive. It handled the hills up to Eze pretty well, was so easy to park in tiny French streets and we found it really efficient. We kept saying it would be a great wee second car to have for a small family/couple.
May I remind everyone about the fact that Two Years ago we were told that the Ora Cat was going to be launched in the U.K. at about £18k and look how that worked out!
Yeah old PR trick. If this car is sold for under £20k it'll come a tiny range battery and two holes in the floor so you can drive around like the flintstones.

Whilst you only TOUCH THE SUBJECT... You are right that the Spring might cost LESS per month than your current petrol bill.... As an example I used to spend £150/mth on diesel but now spend just £25/mth on electric. So the correct PCP could see you buying the Spring and run it for £150/mth....!!
Correct. It costs me just €6 to fill my Spring up. I generally follow the 80% rule so costs me even less. I was paying out over €70 a month for diesel.
This will be the game changer we've needed for a while!
We have the Dacia Spring in the Netherlands for several years, it is no substitute for a car that you use to travel outside the city.
What i mean, is that a standard weekend trip of 250km is not doable.
IRL it can do a max range of between 100 to 130km. It only has a usable battery of 25kw. Funny cheap city car, nothing more.
It could be much more, with a 50kwh battery, like 300km range. That would be a better substitute for a normal car.
Bring it with a 2-door and 50kwh battery version.
Energy recuperation by the electric motor when you slow down: that is the definition of regen. The Spring does not have strong regen by default or selectable levels of regen, but that does not mean it has no regen. The absolute max is 12kW. And also it does regen a little more when you start to push the break pedal than normal engine break when you lift the accelerator. Since it has no selectable levels, it's more efficient overall to have less regen by default than an aggresive regen by default.
Dacia confirm the car has no brake regeneration. I'm not going to argue with them.
@@Electrifyingcom The car sells itself. The marketing and sales teams have no clue of what they are selling. They think they are selling a car with heated mirrors... however no car to this date has been delivered with the heated mirrors, you can get them retrofitted under warranty if you figure it out and file a complaint. You are very harsh on this car. One star relates to it not having a million driving "aids" not the crash protection. For the money, this is the perfect second/city car, cheap, small, light, and saving the planet. What more do you want for the money? As for 0-60? Where on earth can anyone test that in the UK and it have any meaning? We have to think about the future, not cling to the past. Why is someone driving their kids to school in a 2.5-tonne tank? It is their kid's future that this relates to.
The NCAP crash tests show that those kids would be safer in a Fiat 500e, VW Up and a host of other city car competitors - that's in the physical tests and not related to driving aids.
A great 2nd car for the school run & popping to the shops, exactly what it was designed for.
When they first announced the Spring, I thought it'd sell big in the UK. Glad that this model will be available here!
I'm not so sure. Ok, the basics are there, but this is a tiny car. It is a tad smaller and narrower than a Fiat 500. As a commuter car it's a winner, but if you have dogs or kids, forget it....

It's interesting, because this is a Renault kwid developed originally in India and yet Dacia hasn't improved the safety rating of the vehicle, yet, the one developed in Iran will be able to obtain a 3 star rating. Let's hope the Spring model will improve in this area in the future.
It might be the cheapest but for 5 grand more the MG 4 is far superior and with advances in battery technology there will be many cars coming within 12 months that will be superior for the same or less money, I currently drive a Dacia Sandero, 2022 model and it is built quite well, doors close with a nice firm clunk, feels solid, but the price has doubled in the past 2 years which means with discounts there are other cars near its price, Skoda have done the same by increasing their prices as small cars cost a lot to build
5 grand definitely buys a better, more performant, spacious and safer car. I wouldn't be surprised if there will be 2 or 3 rivals to the Spring in the next year selling for a similar price but considerably better spec.

We have one and it does regen more when you press the brake pedal, I don’t know how you tested it but there’s a kW display where you can see it happening
There is no regen linked to the brakes. It just works on the throttle. There is some ‘engine braking’ effect when you lift off the throttle pedal but there is no extra regen when you touch the brake.
@@Electrifyingcom actually there is. Regen when lifting off the throttle only goes to a max -6kW, however when you brake the regen goes to -11kW or -12 kW. I think what you mean is that there is no "one-pedal driving" as on some other electric cars which can regen continuously until you're completely still and you can drive only by using the throttle.

got the 65 extreme version a few weeks ago for 13.800 euros. it was 23.800 but the government cut 10.000 euros for being an 100% electric vehicle. at this price I've got the rear camera with parking sensors, electric windows + electric mirrors, front and side airbags, cruise control, front radar with active braking, regenerative system, 234 km of range on full charge, AC, mobile app that allows you to set the temperature in your car when you're not near so that when you get inside it has the desired temperature, navigation with android auto, eco mode. what it lacks and should be added but it's not even listed as optional: reading light lamp for the rear seats, trunk light, inside grip handles (used to having one for each passenger, this has none), wheel radio control buttons. overall I'm very happy with this purchase. for long rides I'll still use my petrol+lpg saloon car but for city rides this one is the better option. cheap and efficient. and btw, the 65 hp are more than enough to reach from point A to point B faster than a regular petrol/diesel car.
We use it to deliver pizza,fast food and daily newsletter with them in the city,easy to maintaine 🎉 and cheaper then petrol or diesel to run.

Nothing wrong with the space on a Ryanair seat, one of the best in the low cost space. At 6f4 I can sit in one of those happily, but looks like a Spring I won't be able to.
Ceiling is actually pretty tall, leg room is decent as well. The problem is the backrest is VERY BADLY engineered and literally protrudes towards your spine unless you put it in a particularly specific position which you may not enjoy.
Edit: If you are talking about the rear seats, I'm not sure I'd even try to fit myself in there lol

Shows what nonsense NCAP is doesn't it. Cars that were 5 stars become zero stars mainly because they don't have irritating things like 'lane keep assist'.
My ZE40 from 2019 is actually better than the current Zoe because it has better/more airbags mind you.
They just starting to sell it in UK, meanwhile they stopped taking orders for city version in Poland, you can only order a cargo version or leftover city models that are still in stock of dealers

@@FFVoyager Definitely not a new model because it’s been like that for at least a year. I think it’s something to do with lower taxes for cargo vehicles or something and most probably low sales for regular customers. You can see them on streets here, but it’s always either car-sharing or delivery service’s car.
This looks very much like the Renault Kwid and Nissen Go sold in South Africa, both petrol vehicles.
Given those options, I would go for the 2 years old Corsa E. Not because it like it better than the spring but just because of all those cars, that is the one best suited for my case usage.

There's a thing about tightwads, like me too. We tend to notice very small expenses and price rises, but overlook the bigger picture. Which in this case is surely depreciation. What will this tin can be worth in a few years' time?
What ever the pcp value is when you hand it back.
Unless you intend to pay the balloon payment and keep the car, you would be better off handing it back and getting the newer and hopefully more improved version ( hopefully ccs with 50kw rapid etc)

The cheaper the better for me I just want something that rides and rolls,the big question is how will it last ? Why don't the makers all use inter changeable batteries ?
Because that's bad for business, they are looking for return custom to their business, not their competitors.

The batteries are probably expected to last the lifetime of the car just like your smartphone
Because it's unviable and unworkable to have interchangeable battery packs. What happens to your battery warranty if you have it swapped out? How could you be certain the battery you got after swapping, was as good as your old one, and not an abused example? Tesla dropped the concept of battery swapping 10 years ago, in favour of their Supercharger network. This is *exactly* the sort of car that *doesn't* need battery swapping. It's a city/commuter car. You would charge it up at home or work every 3 to 4 days......

You can see where Dacia have taken their que from, this strikes me as a very modern version of Alec Issigonis's original Mini. If we think of it like that, this car makes perfect sense. I really like the fact that Dacia removed the absolutely pointless center seat belt, I wish more manufactorers would admit that their cars are NOT big enough to fit three children let alone two adults. I like the way Dacia have gone bold with colours. 45bhp isn't all that bad for cities and town centres, much like BL mini, you could take it on a motorway, but it wasn't a particularly nice experiance, I'm sure this would be fine as its considerably larger etc.
The Spring is not some kind of design icon, rather it's a crappy 8 year old platform designed for India (as the Renault Kwid) that has been passed around in various ICE & EV variants and is underwhelming and dangerous by modern car standards.
If it was like the original mini it would have more space inside - but they are using springs and dampers. They need to get more inventive with suspension! Alex Moulton's rubber cones would be ideal in a modern EV.

For family safety, the headline EuroNCAP score is pointless, just as it is for other Dacias (Jogger, for example, which is another 1* car). Cost savings mean fewer electronic nannies, but the score is now heavily dependant on these. Ignore it, dig further into the tests, watch the videos - the passenger cell is solid. It's way safer than 1* suggests - EuroNCAP tested a Rover 100 (aka Mini Metro), came to the same 1* rating, but that car was basically demolished, that car's occupants would've been dead or critically injured. Different test regimes, yes, but the Spring is not a deathtrap like the Metro, and yet that 1* and comments like the one in this video will make people think that it is.
EuroNCAP compares scores with the car's contemporaries. While I agree that the score is heavily reliant of electronics which prevent an accident in the first place, the Spring's protection scores are the lowest in the class - 49% for adult protection and 56 for the child in the rear seat. A Fiat 500e scored 76/80, the Up 81/83 and even something like an Aygo X is 78/78. NCAP specifically criticised Dacia in a stinging statement, saying the company put profits before safety.
Very big 'Sandero with electric motor' angle here. These could be brilliant in 2030 as a first car for low costs
It's nowhere near the size of a Sandero. It is smaller than a Fiat 500....
@@Brian-om2hh damn I didn't think they'd go smaller than an already 'small' car, so assumed that this would slowly replace the Sandero.
I test drove the Fiat 500e and its size, despite decent headroom, makes it quite niche
I don't know if they would survive until 2030. They start rusting very quickly and are built increadibly cheap. Not to hate on the car, I've considered saving up for it, but facts are facts and using spongy cardboard where others use steel is not good.
Too bad we won't see it in this side of the pond.
I could see this being popular with older 60+ age low mileage drivers who want a basic runaround for the weekly shop etc, who aren't going to do long motorway drives and want the piece of mind that comes with a new car warranty, as this could well be their last car before having to give up driving.
If I'd get a one year old e-UP! for the same price, then NO WAY I would buy the Dacia! The VW has far superior build quality with longer range, better charging, better performance AND REGEN, not to mention the safer construction (and more EuroNCap stars). If you consider the resale value in few years, I think the VW would keep it's value much better too.
It's only about £3K less than the MG4 EV??
As you asked I would probably seek out a second hand SEAT Mii Electric - more sophisticated and better range.

No way. The Mii/e-up/citigo looks very boring, has similar Range (4 kWh more, not that much difference) and it is way heavier. It is a refitted petrol car and it cost way more than the Spring. The e-up! start from 30k€ in Germany. Crazy! Only the argument of more interior space would be valid for me 😅
I have been leasing a Mii Electric for the past 2 years. Of the 4 EV's I have owned since 2017 it is the only one I have wanted to keep long term... it suits my lifestyle. I guess that's the real point, there need to be EV's in the market in all segments to suit different use cases@@djModu

Regardless of price, sub-300 mile range isn't a conversation. Sub-200 miles range is a "city car". These work in some parts of Europe I guess. But there's a problem. Extreme heat or cold will drop range by 30%, so at various times during the year you'd be driving a Leaf, a real non-starter.
200 miles is more than enough, just ask yourself the question would you need 200 miles per day? U go home and charge it anyway after work ect
Id rather spend a few k more and get a decent one that does not look like a mid 2000s car more so interior
Mitsubishi EK X EV / Nissan Sakura electric Kei cars seems to have more rear leg room. Why can't Renault learn from this?
It’s just a 2+2 town car, really, isn’t it! Off the pace on performance and range, but granted it could give you cheaper mobility if you’re not particularly bothered about what you drive.
Don’t think it’ll be a big seller in UK, especially with SEAT and VW about to also bring out £20-22k cars in next year or so.
An electric car for 20k it gets your attention if your considering going fully electric but i am thinking the price will hike in reality. I am not sure about the name styling is a little soft does not look as rugged like a DACIA also fit finish even for a 20k car they can do better.
2024? Jam tomorrow, never today. Hurry up, manufacturers! Neck seats seem suitable for ambutees or smallest of children. Looking forward to more room in aVW ID.2 or Citroen when they come.
The one star safety rating is misleading and nonsense. The actual crash structure of the car is very good - these days euro NCAP drop all points if it basically doesn't drive for you. Auto emergency braking etc. If you break down the one star rating and look at the actual performance of the car if you have a crash its good.
Well, not really. The report shows lots or red areas for protection in the crash tests. It has the lowest score in the class with 49% for adults and 56 for kids. A VW Up's scores are 81/83 and a 500e got 76/80. That's nothing to do with the auto braking etc.
@@Electrifyingcom Thank you. Amazing how 56% is just 1 star! The reason I mention it is because other Dacia's have fallen into that trap before - I remember one model (Duster maybe?) getting 4 stars for a crash but a poor rating overall due to driving assistance.
No regen, fine for that price and intended use. 1 star safety, no bueno
It doesn't matter anywhere near as much in city driving. What sort of safety rating does a bicycle have? Thousands of those are used in towns and cities.....

When Renault brings this to India as KWID electric, it will cut down the market for TATA.
Commenting for the algorithm because I like this guy's review style. I'm American so can't buy this auto, and wouldn't if I could. The 15 second 0-60 and 1 star rating make it downright dangerous. None of the cars I've owned took more than 10 seconds to get to 60 or had a weight/power ratio higher than a third of the Spring's 47.5 lbs/HP. You would die here trying to merge into 75-80 mph traffic in that thing.
0-60 in over 10 seconds is relatively common in this segment (although increasingly less so) only a few years ago you could buy a version of the Ford Fiesta that took 17 seconds to get to 60 and that was probably much more frequently driven on the highway.
False info, it does regen when pressing the break to a -13kw and what about the radar in front of it, it actualy saved me a couple of times auto braking

I have 2 Dacia spring - test them! .. as a second car is perfect (I have one of 45hp and I never felt the need for more)..

You can't say doesn't have regenerative braking, since it's Dacia's first electric car model and regenerative braking is Dacia's invention.
All their electric motors are constructed to be maximally regenerative and ecologic.
Dacia confirm this model of Spring has no regeneration braking.
The only real issue, I take with electric cars is charging accessibility, I live in a tower block were there is no charging points for electric cars, easier if you live in a house but not for someone like me, when I contacted the council for information regarding this, they said they have no plans to install charging points at my residence until the 2030 ban atleast, because they were not convinced the ban wouldn't be delayed, they have thus far not been provided funding from central government to install them, electric charging points in my city are a total of just four, three of which belong to tesla and 1 is a universal charger, however, not a fast charger.
What city do you live in that has only 3 charging points, the small town in Oxfordshire I live in has 14

As far as I'm aware *all* Local Authorities are eligible for, and can apply for funding to cover the cost of the civils work involved in installing cabling and charge points. This is part of the problem. Some Councils just cannot be bothered to get off their ar$e$ and do what needs to be done......

I have no idea why the charging port being at the front is seen as a good thing. It should be at the back because most people reverse in. Dacia have put it at the front to have shorter copper wires connecting it to the charging electronics, which are under the bonnet.
Many have vocally demanded these cheap cars, let see how many actually buys them.
I've moved from UK to U.S. I don't know why Dacia don't sell to U.S. markets, it would kill most manufacturers even after paying the high tariffs.

The lack of a high safety rating isn't a huge issue if you consider that this is a small car, intended primarily for commuting and city driving. The speeds during city/urban driving do not normally result in serious injuries most of the time. The average speed of moving traffic in London is 8 mph. Plus there is the fact that speed limits in many towns and cities are likely to be reduced to 20 mph in the years ahead.

That's actually more than what it costs me in reality. Octopus Go tariff is 7.5p per kWh between 12.30am and 4.30am. The Leaf charges from empty in three hours and costs me £1.43.
It may be £1K cheaper than the Citroen E-C3 and VW iD1 but at least those cars will be WAY safer and have proper safety kit. This doesn't even have side airbags, let alone curtain airbags or AEB. This is unacceptable at any price.

Thanks, it has a place for some users, but just too compromised for me. Too slow,too small and low range,there are much better used cars at this price.

While I’m a sucker for simplicity in design, this just looks a bit naff and the cost cutting really comes through in the quality. I saw one of these here in Finland which had been hit on the side in town driving (speed limit 30km h). It was ruined. If an accident at that speed could total a car, I fail to see how it could handles a normal impact.
It gets back to the point of new cars though. If you have access to good public transport and decent cycling facilities whats the point of a car like this? It can’t do long journeys, has to be charged at home and isn’t very spacious. Maybe there’s a market for short distance mobility, such as delivery or council workers but it’s basically a means of preserving a dying industry.

If they had one of those £18k models over here, across the pond, they would sell orders of magnitude faster than they could make them. If they could build them here, it'd be even better with the government tax incentives. Too bad about the range though.
Star ratings don't mean much now, they are about automatic braking and lane departure, not how your car deals with an impact
The NCAP report shows lots or red areas for protection in the crash tests. It has the lowest score in the class with 49% for adults and 56 for kids. A VW Up's scores are 81/83 and a 500e got 76/80. That's nothing to do with the auto braking etc
Just buy a Mii Electric or Citigo iV. No, they don't make them anymore but you can find plenty with next to no miles near brand new and you can avoid this horrid thing, get more range, almost the same trunk capacity, *double the horsepower and torque,* etc. The Spring would've been an appropriate price at it's original price in China, but when they brought the car to Europe they had to fit so much more safety, reinforcement etc. that it made the car much heavier and more expensive without actually upgrading the experience at all. There's a reason the value of these halves when it's out the lot.
I'd much MUCH rather chose a 2 year old Corsa electric or equivalent than buy a new Spring. I've driven the Spring for a few days in Romania and holy crap is it nasty. It's so obviously built for third world countries, it feels so light and thin it even makes a tin can look sturdy. Also the 45hp version is honestly dangerously slow, you have to constantly put your foot to the floor just to keep up with normal traffic. Avoid.

When BYD start selling the seagull in Europe, nobody will buy this Dacia. Even now, with subsidies in Italy ypu can get a base MG4 for 21k Euro, it's a small difference for the huge difference btw the two, the dacia isnt a proper car, it's a a city car, the mg4 is a very good c segment EV, the two can't even be compared
Dacia Spring is made in China. The company which is making Dacia Spring will have a new EV later this year, targeting directly at BYD Seagull. The new EV looks like VW ID2ALL and is built on an EV platform. BYD Seagull is built on a ICE platform. Dacia won't worry about BYD Seagull.
No, it isn't capable to replace petrol Dacia Sandero Stepway...! Spring is too small, too slow, low range and way too expensive. If it has price the same as in China, then it would be a different story, much more realistic..., but now, no, and no...! You have to be really "green tree hugger" or very modest to choose such an electric car...! No, such an underperforming electric cars are NOT the solution to the transport problem...A normal size used EV makes much more sense...

This started life as the Renault Kwid a cheap petrol engined car built in India. Now built in China with electric power unless something dramatic happens before its UK debut its only virtue is likely to be its low price bearing in mind its very poor performance and safety.
