Dacia Jogger Hybrid Review | Have They Perfected The Formula?

  • This week on Buckle Up it's GOOD NEWS Harry reviews the hybrid version of his own car. This is the Romanian's brand large 7 seat family vehicle, though they refuse to decide if its an MPV, SUV or Estate. They have decided to slap a 140 bhp drivetrain in it though, so is it worth the extra money?
    Up against rivals such as the Citroen Berlingo, Ford Tourneo Connect, Peugeot Rifter, Renault Kangoo, Skoda Yeti, Vauxhall Combo Life and Volkswagen Caddy Life does the Dacia offer a thrifty but fun alternative?

    I have had my Jogger Extreme Hybrid since November 2023 and had no issues other than a heated seat switch, I also get anything between 50-66mpg around town depending on the weather. If you turn off the limited and take it out of Eco and floor it, it will take on boy racers much their surprise. The middle row of seats can be a bit tight and are a bit like those seats you get on urban trains that a like ironing boards. Everything works as is, but I would get the Extreme with heated seats as they are freezing in the winter. You get instant heat or A/c so no problem there, The arm rest is hopelessly small and raked to forward but there is a kit you can buy to adjust it. Also same goes for the useless interior lights that you can upgrade using Renault parts for £50 or so. Gear changes are hardly noticeable and it will rev up to 4500rpm if the battery is low and you are going up a hill. Keep it in the green zone and it will be a hybrid. Go in the white zone and it's ICE. The pedal is fly by wire so it's connected by a stepper motor to a ECU. You do get sudden brake loss when it goes from IVE to EV which is alarming. You can drive it one pedal though which is excellent around town. Load capacity is huge and you can get five sheep in it as seen in Romania! It's actually a head turner in N. London. You can get the MY24 version with the extra bits but hardly worth the wait.

    Don't forget that the Jogger has no torque converter or synchromesh so it uses the motors adjust the engine and gearbox accordingly. Advantage is that gear changes are undetectable, one glitch is that can "Kangaroo" around when the limiter is on around 23-25mph as the it can't decide what to do.

    It would be so nice to have a camping mode with both ventilation, heating and air-con controlled by a smartphone app through the Bluetooth interface.
    The heating is immediate when starting the car so I suppose some of it is electric.
    The air-con compressor is driven by a dedicated electric engine.
    The engine would start now and then just to replenish the 1.2 kWh battery and ensure the continuity of the camping mode operation.

    • @BuckleUpShow
      @BuckleUpShow  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It doesn't charge the battery more per se, but I like having regen on all the time. If you use it for things like slowing down at junctions and roundabouts and not the brakes you do recoup more energy than you otherwise would though

    • @jessicaarverne1181
      @jessicaarverne1181 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I have driven the hybrid Dacia Jogger in a mountain region of France. I always use the B mode.
      I really appreciated the B mode on downhill sections, which gave me good electric braking even when the battery was full.
      I had very little need to use the brake pedal on descents, where the travel mode was always in EV with the combustion engine at a standstill.
      Starting with a battery that's 50% full, you have to go down a gradient of around 200 meters before it's fully charged.
      When the battery is at 100%, the Jogger still has the same electric braking capacity, as the starter-alternator drives the combustion engine at idle to dissipate braking energy.
      Driving this car in a mountain region was a great experience and I felt very secure in all the slopes and bends.

    I would say, it's more like driving a 5 speed than a 4 speed automatic gearbox of a petrol engine as traction below 30 km/h is exclusively provided by the 50 hp electric engine.
    The petrol engine gearbox only kicks in, when power demand exceeds 50 hp and when speed is above 30 km/h.
    But I agree, the equivalent of only 5 speeds with a petrol engine is not a lot.
    My father has bought this car and he likes it a lot. I drove it and I enjoy it too.
    If you play the by rules for good mileage you can achieve easily 5 litres per 100 kilometers.
    Personally I score 4.7 liter per 100 kilometers.
    However when it's really cold in winter, heating the car needs more petrol and then my score is 5.2 liters per 100 kilometers.
