    FULL PREVIEW: www.electrifying.com/reviews/...
    The Dacia Spring will become the most affordable electric car on sale in the UK and it’s great to see that it’s made a big leap forward in terms of design, desirability and quality.
    The first-generation Dacia Spring was a car we wanted to love, but it came with some pretty big flaws in terms of quality and refinement which let it down. But Dacia seems to have fixed those flaws to come up with a fun, affordable electric car with a new look and a nicer interior. It will be the cheapest new electric car on sale in Britain when it arrives in the UK and while you aren’t getting the levels of equipment or space you’ll find in more expensive rivals, we think it should be on your list.
    In the UK we'll be getting just one battery size and at 26.8 kWh it's about half the size of the Vauxhall Corsa Electric's and quite a bit smaller than the 44 kWh battery you'll find in the Citroen e-C3. As Dacia is focused on keeping the Spring as light as possible - it’s less than half the weight of a VW ID.3 - Dacia claims it will cover over 137 miles of official WLTP range on a full charge. That’s more than the Mazda MX-30, which has a larger battery pack. You’ll be able to get the most out of your range as the Spring is fitted with regenerative braking for the first time, which feeds precious energy normally lost through braking back into the car's battery.
    The Spring has a slow 7kW on-board charger, and a charge from a home wallbox will take four hours. Dacia says many owners will opt to use a three-pin socket to charge, which takes 11 hours; and in Europe there will be the option of a socket booster which uses a more robust three pin which can charge at 3.2kW rather than the usual 2.3 and sees the time cut to around 7 hours - expect to see a similar piece of kit on offer in the UK.
    A 30 kW DC charger enables fast(ish) charging from 20% to 80% in 45 minutes, This is standard on the two more powerful models on sale in the UK, but won’t be on offer - even as an option - on the entry level 45 version. The charging flap is nicely located in the centre at the front of the car and a vehicle-to-load adaptor, which allows you to charge up other things from your car - like an e-bike, or vacuum cleaner (should you want to spring clean your Spring) - is fitted as standard on the top of the range Extreme spec.
    Join Ginny as she takes a first look around the car that is set to set a new benchmark for affordability when it arrives later this year.

    I’m 50. A lot of people my age learned to drive in 40-odd kW Fiestas and Metros etc. and then were able to borrow their mums’ car of that type. They were fine. Perfectly sufficient. It was about time someone offered that kind of thing again. The only thing missing is that the Spring cannot be fitted with a tow bar. Otherwise it would be ideal not only for going to the market but also to the recycling centre etc. Local pottering; those little trips around one’s home that a long-distance car feels too big and powerful for.

    Regen braking is really important for a short ranged city car like this, very good that they added that. You can eek out way more range that way when low speed city driving is its bread and butter.

      Please spare us legacy car manufacturers' beloved "City EV" niche-EV cliche - as in "please buy two cars". In China consumers can choose between countless get-real EVs and eSUVs priced from $10,000 to $20,000 with ranges from circa 150-250 miles and 20-80% charge in 20-30 minutes. So are ya'all thinking of "cities" the size of Wales or Belgium or wot?

    Hi, I live in SW France, and bought my Spring last Summer. I absolutely love it. It is incredibly nippy, and I live in the heart of the Countryside so speed seriously is not a priority as too many obstacles in the way. We have another electric car for long hauls. I charge at home as I'm quite happy to top up. It's fun, and nippy. The back seat isn't really an issue - the dog loves it. Sorted.

But!, and it's quite a big but! £15k, if it really is going to be 15k. Will put it in direct competition with second hand EV's like the Niro and Soul from KIA, which even at 3 years old will have more safety kit, range, equipment and even have more warranty left on it, than the Spring. I know which I would prefer.

    It has been sold here in Brazil for some time (as the Renault Kwid E-Tech), and Renault has cut its price multiple times (cars here have a reputation of being overpriced compared even with neighboring countries) to take on the competition (especially BYD - the Kwid E-Tech launched here at 150,000 BRL, the same launch price as the BYD Dolphin some time later - now, the Kwid E-Tech goes for 100,000 BRL, in anticipation for the local launch of the BYD Seagull, to be sold here as the "BYD Dolphin Mini")

    This reminds me of my mums old suzuki ignis, which was a similar type of car, so i would class it more of the jacked up hatchback rather than mini SUV. Now the ignis wasnt much to look at, had a little 1.3 litre engine but was perfect for commuting to her work, and even for driving to scotland from bristol to visit family. Now journeys like that might be the issue with the slow recharging speed, so would have to plan these sort of journeys , but that would be the same in any EV.

  • @toyotaprius79
    @toyotaprius79 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

    I'm pleasantly surprised by how Dacia spruced up its Spring, better yet if the better exterior and interior weren't prerequisites of jacking the prices even further. It definitely looks like the PR and white collar management demanded it to look like an SUV because profit & appeal; but when you said it had the same footprint of a VW eUP I was pleased to imagine that it's a cute little but beefy city car that's only allowed out if it dressed up like an SUV by its overbearing parents
    If there's anyone at Dacia or Renault reading, and if hairs must be split and gripes had to be made, I'd wish Dacia had the sense and courage to make the Spring as aerodynamic as possible, which is do-or-die for EVs that means full use of air curtains, wheels skirts, underbody panels, aerofoils, longer spoilers; but crucially an extended bum in an estate or kamm back. An estate version of a VW UP was what a good friend of mine really wanted because of how much they loved that brilliant car despite relying on a roof box, matched by how much they hated the driving a Polo, Golf, etc. so they had to go for a 2000s Peugeot 207 estate.
    An estate not just brings the extra boot space but it crucially allows the airflow more time or length to slip off the body. The lack of which is why short cars have more drag and turbulence.

    The price has doubled since it was originally launched in Europe. So I don’t feel like we should be ‘thankful’ for £15000 being the new acceptable price for “cheap” That’s a huge price for most average families in the U.K. wages have not grown with the cost of things.
    We had a Renault Twingo so have had an eye on the Dacia Spring for years now. But we have bought a two year old low mileage EV Corsa. It has 200miles range and cost £16000 just under a year ago. Does 0-60 in about 7.5 seconds.
    So. 100miles range and slow acceleration for a similar price for the Dacia is a hard sell.

    • @drfisheye
      @drfisheye 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Comparing used cars with new cars on price never works. People get Dacia's because they want a new car for the price of a used car. They like the warranty on the new car, they don't like to gamble on the state of an older car. They like the simpleness of Dacia's where less can go wrong and repairs are cheaper.

    • @mtb0x
      @mtb0x 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@drfisheye I bought a brand new duster for this exact reasoning. But the EV Corsa had only 6000 miles on it and feels like a new car. And you have to consider different things when choosing EV’s. Battery size and range matter. So I stand by what I said. A brand new spring doesn’t hit enough requirements when you can get a low mile Corsa with double the range and the balance of the 3 year warranty. Most garages will extend the warranty too. So then only the range matters. And the Corsa at the same price is a no brainer.

    Great review, i could see this doing very well as a budget fleet car especially for companies and organisations looking for a low cost pool car for staff to use.
    It could also be very popular with retired drivers as EV's are very easy to drive and with the Dacia Spring being fairly low tech (manual hand brake etc) will work in it's favour, plus many older drivers will have a low mileage petrol car to part exchange reducing the price further.
    Elderly drivers rarely get a mentioned in EV reviews as the focus is often on the super high-tech features and 0-60 stats but there are over 11 million people in the UK aged over 65, so this is a huge market that EV's have barely tapped into.

I do not have room to physically fit a 7KW wall box (or provide the power for 7KW) to my detached garage but I do have 13A power. It would have the range to get to work and back (42 miles) or a day or so without range anxiety so this could be worth considering for a cheap to run commuter and town car. Food for thought indeed.

    • @robinbennett5994
      @robinbennett5994 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That's really just because the battery is small though. You'd get the same ability with an old Leaf or Zoe. A 3-pin plug is perfectly adequate for the average driver in the UK. Although if it really is as efficient as they claim, you would get slightly more miles of range per hour of charging.

    Thanks for the "Sneak-Peak". Nice ehhh hot hatch :).
    What I like about this Dacia, is that the interior is not "that" basic, like that of the Citroën ë-C3 without a screen. It also has the physical buttons, i like that.
    But honestly, to be a usable replacement for an ICE car on a daily base, an EV should have at least a range of 320km and a decent 100kW charger. (like the ë-C3)
    That makes it possible to use an EV outside a city. A weekend trip of 500km wont take you several days extra.
    BTW.
    It has 4 doors, you must be severely handicapt to have problems getting into the back. . . . . . . . how do you think people get into the rear seats in the 2-door cars from the 60th up till the 90th?

    I would love to see some YT reviewers buy the 45HP one and drive it around town. Torque is what always let down small lower powered petrol hatchbacks, this will not have that issue as EVs are very torquey which helps even a small lower end powertrain feel actually quite go-karty. Can confirm that from the 82hp e-Up.
    Would also be fun to see how road trips are in this this. 33kw DC fast charging is slow for bigger EVs and batts, but in this you'll probably be able to surf the 15-85% charging cycle on a trip pretty good. A hypermiling test doing 56mph on a road trip would be interesting, with it being so light I bet you could get well over 6mi/kw in milder to warm weather.

      I am afraid they are already here most petrol and diesel cars are built to last the warranty. Half of what is in the engine bay is plastic.. Timing, chain guides, plastic. Wet belts from Ford… I wouldn’t call it disposable, but certainly there’s an awful lot of consumables. Oil filters spark, plugs, injectors, cam chains, cam, belts, gearboxes, clutches, exhaust pipes to name but a few..

    I wish they made it at least 90HP with at least a 64kWh battery or heck even a 50kWh battery and 100kw DC. It would habe been perfect.

      I'd rather have the MG5. But yeah, 90HP and bigger tyres.

      @@davidspencer7254 I also wouldn’t buy a Dacia, but that combo would make it better of course a bit more expensive too, but it would have a range of 400+km.

    I live on the fifth floor of a block of flats and my mate lives in a terraced house. Apparently there are millions of people living in similar residences that you just can't plug an E.V. into. Strange really that the Government has not allowed for the majority of the public, don't you think? Yes I know I could plug into a charger at a charging point somewhere but have you seen the queue's and how long it takes to charge on top of the costs. Hmm, we won't mention the service costs along with repair costing or the ever increasing E.V. insurance costs, plus the occasional bursting into flames for no apparent reason, right. All in all then the E.V.s are O.K. if you have a garage with a plug socket and you just use the E.V. for driving locally. To sum up, if you are the average Kevin and Susan middle class, go for anything new at any expense then may I wish you good luck. 👍
