Music programming is difficult skill to acquire; your work here is valuable. Roland has a wide library of tutoring but “owning” the skill “so very hard to do!”
Good Lord. 59min later after trying to record my 79yr old aunt's own original song, albeit only one continous piano take till the end, we couldn't figure out from the extremely poor B&W pics of the screen in the manual, how to "make" a song-let alone save it! "we couldn't figure out from the extremely poor B&W pics of the screen in the manual" - It made sense to download the color PDF manual right away and watch it with any mashup on a laptop or tablet screen
I’m so pleased I discovered your video, someone who’s not from Roland who is whizzing through stuff really quickly, using all kinds of terminology which I’m not used to yet. I’m on the verge of buying a Fantom, so this your video is an incredible find. Im now subscribed and looking forward to future videos.
It would help if you could give me an idea of what area you need help with most - I know, the Roland Videos go by so fast it's crazy! I've only had it a few weeks myself, I have been using Korgs for 22 years (Triton and Kronos) and thought they were hard to learn...
I agree. Sometimes I think the high end synth guys either forget, Or don't really want to use common speak for things. Plus, This video is more along how I would like to work. I want to build out my own songs with it. So learning how to record a song from scratch really appeals to me. Plus, Quite often the synth pros explain things out of sequence making the info they are sharing difficult to apply in real time. For the record, I'm no Luddite. I was programming all the friends and neighbors VCRs in the early eighties as a kid. I can usually figure stuff like this out, but alas,Here we are.
You can load up the songs into your sample pads bank on the right of the Fantom and then trigger them since they are scenes. You go into scene view I think? I dont quite remembere, there is a tutorial on the roland youtube.
Really nice easy to understand walk through of how to create a song in the Fantom. Probably one of the best Fantom videos I've found on the web and tremendously helpful to me as a new Fantom 8 user! Would love to see you create more content like this. Well done!
Not sure if you discovered that already but when grouping you can group all active patterns and they don't need to belong to the same lane / letter. Like you could activate Zone 1 and 2 from section A and zone 4 and 5 vfrom B and zone 10 from F. I kinda figured that out the hard way because I couldn't figure out why it was saving patterns from other letters. Once I figured it out it's kinda cool.
Thank you mate! I have just got model 7, no 07, and Id apprecciate if you could point our your tutorial play list..I have been searching one by one ...lol...pulling my hair out to learn it all...lol I believe I must watch previous videos to understand this one..I dont even know about music structure...well neither did Vangelis... and what a mentor! What a MASTER!
Congratulations and glad you found it helpful, you will find all my Roland videos in a playlist (but you might have to scroll down a bit to find it) best wishes!
Will do, I’m still getting use to using Logic Pro X and will post something when I get a little more comfortable with using it, but so far it’s really cool what I’ve seen it do.
I know, my Korg sequencer is easier to use than the 06 Fantom - heck even my old Roland MC-500 was easier to work with lol! I think the reason it is set up the way it is, is to make it more compatible to integrate with a DAW.
thanks buddy, i have recently acquired a roland fantom 6 and was struggling with it but your video clarified most of the issues. Can you also help me understand how to import a midi song with multiple tracks into fantom 6 ( the process) and change instrument voicings with fantom samples and then lay them in wav format for mixing. thanks 😊
With regards to the Scene thingie, isn't the Scene Chains what you are looking for ? Not sure if the Fantom-0 has it, but I've seen Ed Dias show it on the Fantom : th-cam.com/video/bTawxam3Ya0/w-d-xo.html
Hello friend, could you explain to me how to start a sequence from a certain measure or bit to edit what has already been recorded in that sequence??? generally after recording we have to fix some things but the sequence always starts from 0 ZERO in advance thank you very much Blessings brother
It’s possible using the editor - but not easy since you can only do micro editing and can’t really see it- better to use a DAW for that or just re-record the section (what I usually do)
okay: you are basically using their sequencer in a LINEAR fashion, much not unlike my favorite sequencer in my MOTIF keyboard....As I plan to eventually use my Fantom as the master keyboard, I will be constructing songs the same way you have in this video. This is quite a bit different than what you see in all the other sequencer videos for Fantom on you tube and why? Because they are only doing esoterical, contemporary free form jazzy compositions, which lend themselves to using up variations of the same zones, and using checkerboard combinations to form the group. But when you are doing REAL songs, such as Caroline, the only way to do it, is the way you are describing here in this video with a straight linear concept. Constructing REAL songs in this manner, is the best way to go, breaking the song down into it's various components and them putting them back together in a logical fashion. I have a variety of "cheat" sheets that I also use for each song project. Nice job and thank you for reaching out to the truly new people out there who have never made songs in this manner.
Wow! This is top notch 🤩 I had a great time. Well done and a big thank you for providing such high quality content! I bought the Korg Nautilus 88 but I'm thinking of selling it because I don't understand much about it and then it has very few buttons so I can't use it properly. This Fantom 0 could very well replace it because its interface looks nicer and the integrated sequencer more affordable than the Korg one... There is also the yamaha modx8 but it's complicated too I think. The only problem is the quality of manufacture. The korg is top quality with a very good heavy keyboard (the rh8 of the kronos). On this point, I do not know what to expect with a Roland Fantom 08. Would I make a mistake by selling my Nautilus for a Fantom 08? 😁
Thanks for the compliment, as far as trading the Nautilus for the Fantom-08 - I’m not as familiar with the Nautilus as I am the Kronos , the 08 does have weighted keys and Roland is on par in many ways with Korg IMHO as far as reliability and quality etc. I would try to get my hands on a Fantom-08 if I could first and play it beforehand if you can do that somehow before making any decisions.
@@DigitalDoxology Thank you very much for your feedback. You are right, trying the Fantom 08 is the best way to compare. What you tell me about the quality of manufacture is reassuring. I had chosen the Nautilus for the quality and diversity of its sounds. But in the end, the interface and ease of use is more important. I will seriously consider this change. ☺️
According to Roland you are supposed to be able to use Fantom as an audio interface (I’ve never used this feature before) go to Roland support for instructions on how to set it up - use google search for “can Roland Fantom 06,07,08 record audio” and use link to Roland support. Hope this helps. Otherwise you’d create you tracks on an external audio - DAW or audio recording system such as a Tascam DP-24 or 32.
@@DigitalDoxology Thank you for your answer. Now I have a Roland fa 08 and I can record, delete and change the order of each measure. I don't have to use da. I hope Phantom can do it too.
@@tomaszdomagala basically, yes you’re correct. You can do some minor audio editing but not the same as editing the midi file. In that case, a DAW enables you to do more extensive midi editing. (LogicProX, MainStage or Abelton)

Hi, do you have a short vid on how to save your song to work on it later? I tried making my first song on here and I keep making errors and it eventually got deleted. Also this keyboard is extremely advanced for a kid my age and I'm kinda surprised at myself for actually being able to figure out how to make songs on it, but I'm struggling on being able to save the song to work on later.
Just saw this - two things; 1. Very important- Make sure you press the red “Write” button to save your work and songs etc… 2. Get yourself a flash drive to plug into the back of the Fantom to periodically save a backup of everything! Hope this helps!
Copy pattern ??? I tried this and the screen said copy complete..... But where did the copy go ??? . I did this as I was trying to copy a whole line to duplicate the verse part without actually re working it from nothing .
Are you in the “pattern sequencer” mode and trying to copy and paste a pattern? If so, you will want to designate which square you want to copy it to and you’ll see it turn a color when complete. Also, be sure to “write” your work or save it continually so you don’t lose anything. I’ve had that happen a few times.
@@DigitalDoxology thank you for your reply. Your info caused me to try something. And it worked , I pressed pattern utility button. Then select a square click copy then pressed empty square and pasted it to this square. Then play tested ...... It did it !!! 😁. Thanks again
It’s very similar to using a multi track recorder, you have to know the song fairly well structurally ahead of time like how many measures each section is and so on, then record each instrument part - I usually start with the drums, piano and then bass.
@@DigitalDoxology Thank you for responding to my question. I am able to determine the measures for each part. How do I record each part separately and then use groups/grouping to assign each recorded part as either Intro, Pre-Chorus, Verse, etc...?

So can you overwrite say for example “homecoming”?
How many scenes can you save?
You could if you want to, I started saving all my songs in the D bank to be safe - and then make a back up copy ever so often.
I think there’s about 64 open scenes in each bank or thereabouts?
Can you export your song as a multi-track wav or midi into an SD card ?
Every song file is exported as a group of wav files / separate wav file for each track / then also a mastered stereo track.
