Some information about the fortress in Niksic, its foundations are actually the remains of a Roman city, after which it was conquered by the Goths. In the Middle Ages, it was part of the Slavic kingdoms in the area, until the arrival of the Ottomans. In the second half of the 19th century, Montenegrins liberated it again. The fortress was neglected for a long time, but it has been restored, and some archaeological investigations are planned...

More like Southeastern Europe. Slavic nations, but they were under Ottoman rule for a long time. I can understand about 50% of Slavic languages because I learned Russian in childhood. The funny thing is that tourists from Eastern Europe speak English to locals. They could just speak their own languages-they are so similar.
Maybe or maybe not. Some words can be very tricky in similar languages as they are seen as the same but have completely other meanings in different languages. Like in Czech foukati means that wind is blowing but in Slovenian the same pronunciation of the word means to have sex. :) So when a Slovenian comes to Czechia or Slovakia, all weather forecasts on radio are heard like a speech about some adult movies. :) Maybe that's why people with similar languages are cautious how to speek with locals. Although I say that in the Southern Slavic language group (ex-Yugoslavian countries and Bulgaria) it is not that problematic as it can be with people from West Slavic and East Slavic language groups that want to communicate in their languages in ex-Yugoslav countries while people from ex-Yugoslavia can freely understand each other.

Another interesting video, congrats. I agree that Montenegro is the most underrated country in Europe (especially in its interior) but in the EU I would say that this "underrated" mark goes to Lithuania and Slovakia. For instance, Slovakia has more castles per capita than any other country in the world, breathtaking mountains, amazing smoked sheep milk cheese oštiepok, foklore village Čičmany and many more but is not so much visited by tourists beyond the capital Bratislava. Lithuania is simply amazing in Trakai, Šiauliai (Hill of Crosses) and especially Curonian Spit regions.
@@GabrielTravelerVideos, if you were amazed by Nikšić (Bedem) Castle now, you would be even more impressed by Spiš Castle in Slovakia. Bojnice Castle, Trenčin Castle and Orava Castle are also very nice in that country.
@@neilrmartin1984 , I have visited all three Baltic countries, in all of them many sites all across them and I can say that outside their capitals, Lithuania has to offer by far the most of them, that's why I chose Lithuania here. But if I compare their capitals, I always go with Tallinn as the best of them and Riga as second best.
The word underrated is overrated in my opinion. Belgium has the biggest castles per square meter in the world. And especially all of them are very diverse in style. So every country owns his record you could say.
Gabe, how is the situation for people who don't want to drive? Do you think getting someone to drive around those magnificent mountains is a huge expense?
Taxi prices are pretty affordable, so it seems like it wouldn't be too expensive. Maybe not much more than the $60 per day that I paid for the rental car, plus gas, depending of course on how far you went. If it was for multiple days with the same driving then I'm not sure how that would work as far as where they would sleep and eat, etc.

I'm kind of adverse to bureaucracy and I know you have to apply months in advance. Story about that Piva Lake is a tragedy in some way. It is in reality an artificial lake that is the result of the construction of Mratinje Dam on the Piva River and it flooded over some old villages (people had to evacuate from them, move away). On the bottom of the lake there is the old town Plužine; Piva Monastery was also there, but it has been relocated. Gabriel I worry about you falling with your camera. It seems at times you photograph dangerous areas where if you fall don’t know if you would survive. Cheers 🎉
Glad you didn't call Croatia Eastern Europe, you would get an entire nation against you, they won't even accept the Balkan label there, not even in Dubrovnik which is as Balkan as it gets geographically. Montenegrins especially the ones that identify as Serbs might be more okay with this though, to be more exact it is Southeast Europe (also applies to Greece which is even more east).
Hi Gabriel, Montenegro is truly a gem among European countries something to note the name Montenegro in Spanish means black mountain which I always found strange. The opening scenes in the monastery are a bit disturbing because when you reach the top of the tunnel there's no fence so little kids or elderly people can lose their balance and fall over, I found that to be strange no safety wall of any kind. An incredible site to see well-constructed real testament of buildings on the side of a mountain. The built-in church was a phenomenal building inside the mountainside, just an extraordinary location in a deeply religious country. I think you'll find the bread and dairy much fresher than in the States because it is local, and it doesn't have to travel as far to the market.
Montenegro in English is so named because Venetians (Italian speaking) ruled there for like almost 400 years in the coastal region and in Western Europe this region was known with their name that is in reality Venetian calque from local Montenegrin name Crna Gora that also means Black Mountain. Especially Mount Lovćen (seen at the beginning of this video) is the reason and inspiration for that name because it is covered in dense evergreen forests.
So much to see and do in such a small country, from a billionaire lifestyle to hiking and camping. As we like to say here, you can ski and swim in the ocean in one day. 😀 And we do it sometimes. 😀 Go visit some lakes for example in the north, there are hundreds unknown and breathtaking.
It seems like Montenegro has so far the best shot to join the EU among Western Balkan countries in future. But if they will, we will see, people must decide what is best for them and their country.
Damn Gabe, be careful on those rock walls, you scare me. Fall there and that would ruin your trip bigtime! You aint getting any younger, i know this, i have at least 25 years on ya.
Bro, I paid 50 euros for a large room in a four star hotel in the end of May, half board, an open door pool, at the side of the beach, in a famous resort.
I'd say without a shadow of a dought, atleast 55-75% of the so called Montenegrins are of Albanian origin, im not saying they call themself that, im saying they know that or deny allthough some deny it. Im speaking more about ethnic origins, there were lots of forced "conversions" from catholic to orthodox with force and proces of "Slavicization" was taken place under long time. Basically you can look at the origins of a lot of "Montenegrin" tribes, mostly if not all were all Albanian
You travel non-stop, and how can Montenegro be in Eastern Europe? I’m still fascinated by that fact about Americans and geography. Besides, Yugoslavia never belonged to the Eastern Bloc, if that's what you're associating it with. Before posting, ask AI-it knows everything accurately now. :)
"Some countries in Southeast Europe can be considered part of Eastern Europe. Some of them can sometimes, albeit rarely, be characterized as belonging to Southern Europe,[4] and some may also be included in Central Europe. In some media, "Southeast Europe" can thus partially overlap with "Eastern Europe" of the Cold War Era. The following countries are labelled Southeast European by some commentators, though others still consider them to be Eastern European.[62] Albania Bosnia and Herzegovina Bulgaria Cyprus (Geographically located in Asia, though most often considered a part of Southeastern Europe) Croatia (can variously be included in Southeastern[55] or Central Europe)[56] Greece (Sometimes grouped in Southern Europe with countries like Italy, Spain and Portugal) Hungary (most often placed in Central Europe but sometimes in Southeastern Europe)[63][64] Moldova (usually grouped with the non-Baltic post-Soviet states but sometimes considered part of Southeastern Europe)[65] Montenegro North Macedonia Romania (can variously be included in Southeastern[58] or Central Europe)[59] Serbia (mostly placed in Southeastern but sometimes in Central Europe)[60] Slovenia (most often placed in Central Europe but sometimes in Southeastern Europe)[61][64] Turkey (East Thrace, the portion west of the Turkish Straits)" en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eastern_Europe
Gabe, you butcher those names as if you've never traveled before! The letter "J" is not pronounced as "jay" in most European languages. Instead, it's pronounced as "y" at the beginning of "yod". For peck's sake! - I really like your videos, but please get out of that ignorant USian bubble. Other than that, keep the good stuff coming!
Not asking you anything more but to realize that the English language is not the "A and Ω" in the world with its quirks in pronunciation, but rather divergent from other languages. Thus, for example, the letter "E" at the end of the word is there for a reason and has to be pronounced. 😃

So much to see and do in such a small country, from a billionaire lifestyle to hiking and camping. As we like to say here, you can ski and swim in the ocean in one day. 😀 And we do it sometimes. 😀
Go visit some lakes for example in the north, there are hundreds unknown and breathtaking.

I reckon Montenegro could be another Monaco, or a European Dubai. But only if it stays out of the EU.
It seems like Montenegro has so far the best shot to join the EU among Western Balkan countries in future. But if they will, we will see, people must decide what is best for them and their country.
@@Ojstra Joining EU will just rise prices ,just look at Croatia and insane prices there ,its like 3 times more then Montenegro .
Ciao 👋
Hurry up and get to Greece😂
I was thinking the same 😂😂👍
Dangerous staircase

Montenegro got yogurt!
😅
Unfortunately, MN coast is not a very comfortable place to be in the summer - terrible traffic, terrible crowds, terrible garbage and polluted sea.
Serbian girls are very nice 👍
It’s all good!
Bro, I paid 50 euros for a large room in a four star hotel in the end of May, half board, an open door pool, at the side of the beach, in a famous resort.
Sweet. That's because it was the end of May. The same room is probably 3 or 4 times the price now.
Underrated Montenegro [ Crna Gora ] in eastern EUROPE !🍾🍷
Keep calm and enjoy the ride, didn't know you had a heavy right foot 😂😂😂
Hi,everyone!
"Underrated Country in Eastern Europe" I would call it rather Southern Europe.
45:09 free candy 😂
I'd say without a shadow of a dought, atleast 55-75% of the so called Montenegrins are of Albanian origin, im not saying they call themself that, im saying they know that or deny allthough some deny it.
Im speaking more about ethnic origins, there were lots of forced "conversions" from catholic to orthodox with force and proces of "Slavicization" was taken place under long time.
Basically you can look at the origins of a lot of "Montenegrin" tribes, mostly if not all were all Albanian
NO
🤣🤣🤣
The following countries are labelled Southeast European by some commentators, though others still consider them to be Eastern European.[62]
Albania
Bosnia and Herzegovina
Bulgaria
Cyprus (Geographically located in Asia, though most often considered a part of Southeastern Europe)
Croatia (can variously be included in Southeastern[55] or Central Europe)[56]
Greece (Sometimes grouped in Southern Europe with countries like Italy, Spain and Portugal)
Hungary (most often placed in Central Europe but sometimes in Southeastern Europe)[63][64]
Moldova (usually grouped with the non-Baltic post-Soviet states but sometimes considered part of Southeastern Europe)[65]
Montenegro
North Macedonia
Romania (can variously be included in Southeastern[58] or Central Europe)[59]
Serbia (mostly placed in Southeastern but sometimes in Central Europe)[60]
Slovenia (most often placed in Central Europe but sometimes in Southeastern Europe)[61][64]
Turkey (East Thrace, the portion west of the Turkish Straits)"

@@GabrielTravelerVideos I seem to remember you discussed this very topic in 1 of your videos last year?

Eastern Europe includes the Balkans
Немој паметовати.
And then, just a couple of minutes further in the video you are perfectly able to pronounce the "J" sound: "Ay-yay-yay!" 😃
Not asking you anything more but to realize that the English language is not the "A and Ω" in the world with its quirks in pronunciation, but rather divergent from other languages. Thus, for example, the letter "E" at the end of the word is there for a reason and has to be pronounced. 😃
🙄
Seriously not a great video, mostly boring, but I know much better to come, safe travels. Diarmuid Long
South Europe Gabriel! South. Please learn the basic European topography and geography. Ok?
As usual the constant sound of your hand rubbing on the microphone, annoying :(
I agree it's annoying and actually asked my viewers about it a while ago:

Not sure how to solve it yet, don't really want to attach my camera to a selfie stick, that would really change things. I'll be considering what I can do because it bugs the heck out of me while I'm editing the videos. I actually edit a bit out, where I can to reduce it.
@@GabrielTravelerVideos Thanks for replying and glad that you're acknowledging it and looking for a solution! I think just a small handle at the bottom might be one way to go, I think that's how some other bloggers like Bald and Bankrupt do it. Or a different camera, Idk...Good luck and thanks for the vids! For those that don't hear it, thats very odd, god help them haha.
