Solo Through Romania's Dark Past 🇷🇴

  • 🇷🇴Deep in the heart of Eastern Europe lies the nation of Romania. A mysterious land to many with its own history of villains and heroes. And it was in search of one such polarising figure that I began a journey across this land ( by the world’s greatest train ) in the footsteps of Ceaucescu. Join me on this personal journey which I have long dreamed of making as we trace the leader’s final days in power and his ultimate demise.
Shoutout to all the friendly Romanian people I met on the journey.
The prequel to this video can be found on the Daily Bald channel.

Romania has bad reputation in Europe because of the ethnic "g - word" living in Romania (youtube will censor this comment if I even spell the word), although most of them now left Romania. Mix that with the Dracula story, past communism, poverty, and 90% of tourists are scared away. The only tourists left that really want to visit Romania are the risk taking, adrenaline junkies looking for an exotic dangerous place to visit. But those too get disappointed because instead of an exotic dangerous place, they find a "normal" eastern block place not really different from, say, Poland. In the North-Western half of Romania, even people look a lot like those from Poland, or even from East-Germany.
The irony is that Romania really has quite special touristic attributes. But given the circumstances, Romania's unique touristic flavor will continue to be appreciated only by the few expert connoisseur tourists.

    2. The Revolution square is not where you filmed, it's another location ("Piața Revoluției"). Today that building where Ceaușescu spoke from the balcony it's the headquarter of the Ministry of the interior. It's even a monument with the names of those who died in the revolution there.

Really stoked to see you in Romania. When I was in college I had the incredible opportunity to go to an archaeological field school program in Romania. We took the train from Budapest into central Romania where I stayed with a Romanian family for a month in the tiny provincial town of Rapoltu Mare. While there we ate, drank, and excavated Dacian remains/artifacts with the locals. Most spoke almost no English, and I almost no Romanian, but we absolutely formed a bond. Hearing the opinions the older locals have on Ceausescu was very interesting and surprising, we were told by our American professors that he was an inherently evil presence on the country and people - I appreciate you taking the time to listen to the locals. Can't wait to see where your Romanian travels take you next. I hope you check out the decommissioned salt mines that are now repurposed into underground amusement parks. And if you find yourself in Rapoltu Mare, you have to climb Magura Uroilui - it's a landscape feature that has been well documented during the Roman Empire. Be safe Bald.

I was on business trip to Ploesti, Rumenia. Visited Bucarest, which is really a nice town, especially the city center. Toured up north to the beautiful Carpathian Mountains, city of Brasov, Dracula castle but the most amazing place was Peles castle. Regarding Causescu, I had a sense that people are still afraid to voice their opinion especially when other people are around. In general, some people in Soviet block countries felt more secure back then since they all had jobs, medicine was free, as well as college education. To Bald: go back to Rumenia and show how beautiful the country is.

"... he randomly starts talking in German". It is a common human reaction. When you meet someone who does not understand your language, you start talking in a foreign language 'you' know. During my travels I remember speaking in English with foreigners (all over the world - including Europe) who didn't speak my mother tongue but also did not speak English. Now it is funny, but back then it was automatic.

Wow Bald, i never thought you will cross my hometown in one of your videos :) An answers for the Szolnok part:
    1. It's a huge railway intersection (nearly every railway line from Eastern Hungary cross here), hence the huge building and the lot of railway gauges on the station. That's why the Americans (not the Soviets) bombed it in 1944.
That's incredible that how much you enjoy the places which we really hate (i was there in hundreds of times while travelling to my different Universitites throughout the country), but never actually been in the waiting lounge.
