Microsoft just declared war on DIY builders.
You will buy what we tell you to buy.
You will do what we let you do.
And we will watch you doing it!

I agree. I have been building my own PCs since the mid 1980's. Used every MS OS since MS DOS 1.1. Microsoft ONLY reacts to users when their quarterly earnings change to the negative. It seems that MS is marketing to a different crowd. One that likes all the cutesy bells and whistles.

@@M7829-f7q That's odd. Microsoft reported negative quarterly earnings in the 4th Quarter of 2022. So they will now react to users? The decline was due to foreign exchange rates over which they have no control and diluted earnings. I guess I don't care how or why they had negative quarterly earnings as long as they react to us, the users.

Hardware doesn't last forever but even then your options under Linux are much better. If a motherboard dies, you can pop the HDD/SSD out, put it in another machine and have it just run without re-activation problems. You can replace with a second hand machine or other older generation hardware saving money. Moving away from Windows makes lots of things simpler and more reliable.

My wife uses her PC for company accounting and online store management.
It would be best if we have the same distro on each machine for simplicity.
We also have a mini PC that we have been using as a 'backup server' and Plex media centre. This will need some research to see how we can support backup utilities.

I've never used Linux but listening to Linux users talk about it leaves me with the conclusion that it's pretty much a chaotic mess of compromised functionality. @musicbro8225 When I have tried Linux in the past and had a problem, a search for solutions often brings up several answers that are incompatible with my distro, and not only that, are incomprehensible, as they require in-depth knowledge of the guts of the Linux OS, which would require yet more research. And I know Microsoft, they will do a way to enable that feature on systems that "doesn't support AI" and they WILL keep enabling it without telling you every time you disable it. Frankly, Linux never looked so bright.
2 - Microsoft wants to be Apple. They want to force you on new hardware, they want to force you do use the system the way THEY think you should, etc. Again, I'm already messing around with Linux Mint to try and activate SCrivener, which is the software I use to work, once I'm able to do it on my laptop, my PC will be updated to Linux too. And I doubt I would ever go back to Windows, because it's clear that Microsoft wants to force these on us, a simple example of that is the fact that Windows 10 is losing support next year, but there's no new Windows version, only 11, and the Windows 11 is getting those updates no one asked for.

You're not getting AI recall unless you buy special Hardware built for it so that's out and a non issue.
If you have Windows home, you don't have BitLocker, and if you do have BitLocker in Windows Pro you can either not use it or uncheck the box it and it uninstalls. So that's another potential none issue.
If you want privacy and no updates then turn off the background intelligent transfer service and the Windows update services with a simple checkbox, and phoning home becomes a potential nonissue issue too.
If you don't believe in allowing Microsoft to take Telemetry data which is none identifiable usage and helps Microsoft to plan for what people want in the next operating system then that's your choice.
Did you know that in Windows Pro, there's a group policy editor and a local security policy editor app. In the group policy editor alone, there are 4,225 checklist options where you can turn Windows basically inside out and have it as locked down as you want, replace parts of the UI and change how it operates, what appears and what doesn't what is clickable and what isn't.
I don't think Linux has anything to match the breath or depth of the group policy editor. Also in each option of the editor there is a description of what that feature does and doesn't do. That's true customization.

This sounds like a conspiracy between Microsoft and PC makers. Microsoft has gotten on my last nerve.
I have an older Acer Aspire which runs Win 10 great, but it is not built for Win 11. At end of life for Win 10, I will keep using 10 until I can no longer do so due to exploits or whatever. I tried to put Linux on the laptop, but it will not install even using Ventoy or even burning the ISO to a USB with Rufus. It runs through the installation until the end and then stops. So, I am thinking I could use a VM on my Win 10 and use Linux that way. Don't know if this will work or not.
My desktop uses Win 11, but if they try to make me use Recall on my Win 11, I will revolt.
Ya, Microsoft also said Win 10 would be the last ISO, but then they made Win 11, So, don't trust Microsoft.
Microsoft just couldn't leave well enough alone with Win 7 by making Win 8! Then they made Win 10 which I like very much, but then they made Win 11 which has turned me off to AI and anything Microsoft does. I will never have to worry about Recall or AI. If I must, I will switch to Linux and Microsoft's market share will continue to fall.

I can understand how Microsoft came to develop a feature like Recall. It's actually the natural outcome of integrating AI into Windows. For that AI to be able to help you properly, it needs to know everything about you. So it has to spy on you, for your benefit. Now Microsoft could have done this in the background, and leave it there, never letting the user directly access all that information, but they didn't. Recall is just another way to access the database that an AI assistant already has to build. By presenting it to users as an useful feature they might be more willing to let the AI use all that disk space. I don't think that Microsoft expected the backlash they got for this.

BTW that is an Acer AX1930-UR10P, which was when new, a $500 halfway decent machine. Maybe less than halfway....yeah

@@CyberCPU The version of 7 64 I installed was Pro not Home that's why the key on the sticker didn't work. I used Rufus and installed home. It installed but now it won't let me install any web browser or even connect to the Internet to windows update and all the drivers are in as well as SP1. All via USB. Internet worked before. Today I downloaded another 7 64 home and installed it as an upgrade. Didn't get rid of the problem. Next thing I do will be format the SSD with easus partition master and try one more time. If that fails screw it it's only an Acer aspire x1930 that cost me $2.50 on auction it included an HP 10" digital picture frame brand new. The Acer didn't have a HDD so I broke out one of my new 1 TB ssd's.

@CyberCPU Tech - I will not be going forward to win 11. Of course I will move everything over to linux that I can but I need win or mac for Adobe products. Is there any possibility of running server products that would have all the AI and spying removed that will run win64 programs on the desktop? Now, if they're not removing that crap from the server products then I think its time to turn out the lights.

You will probably be better off running desktop software with those components striped out.
      There will definitely be ways.

I have a hard time hearing voices, I always enable closed caption, voice enactments, if possible. I love Window's Live Captions, I use it on every video I watch on my PC. It really helps with live streams, it's way better then TH-cam's auto CC. Windows AI filters out the "umms", the "uhhhs", and other filler sounds, that other auto CC's don't. It makes makes following what they are saying so much easier.
Also, I preferred the Win11 audio, even though the audio quality is way way worse. All I heard was his voice. I didn't have to concentrate on filtering out other sounds so I could hear what he is saying. I hope they enable that feature for outgoing audio. It would really help on videos like this, were the main thing is what the presenter is saying.

After years and years of using Windows....a few weeks ago, I decided to make the switch to Linux as I recently learnt there are ways to game nowadays in that OS. And its great!!!!...Now...Only tested a few games and I am still kinda at the learning process, but man......I dont think im gonna ever go back, especially with allthis survilliance crap we getting on Windows on each release. BTW.....I ve been watching ur channel for long, and even tho i changed OS, I will continue to do so, u know, just for curiosity and see how deep the rabbit hole its gonna turn out in the end. Also, would be great if u could make Linux reviews as well not only for gaming but for general stuff like u already do for windows.

Linux gaming is the main challenge. First I was running Bnet/WoW in Steam Compatibility but that broke in an update. Now I'm on Bottles (tried Lutris also, usual) GE Proton 9-5 container, it works really well. I'll likely play other games later some BG3, D4 etc. I'm happy with Nobara KDE right now but I've distro hopped in the past a lot. I was playing the same game(s) under Manjaro a couple years back, that was fine too. Most common thing to break on the backend are the game launchers, bnet one broke last 2 years ago, which put me back with 10/11 as dual boot. Am hoping to just stay, ext4 is a great file system, can still access my NTFS files, even plug in old NAS if I wanted (20TB HDD and 2 2TB NVMEs don't really need to worry about storage as much anymore, have a bunch of HDDs around here too for backup. Right now, I'm happy 12900KF 4090, don't think I need to go back, both the Nvidia and AMD GPU rigs are working great for everything. I'm stable with each system, which is what I always wanted from a user experience. Everything open source exists, Office (Libre, Open etc), Kdenlive, OBS, GIMP, not much need to go back unless something exists in Windows that doesn't work well, but that gap is closing. I don't play Fortnite, so I think I can stay Linux.

Screen captures every 2 seconds, that's just fantastic for the Space and Defence industry and Chinese hackers too. I can see professional engineering software, CAD/CAM, analysis etc being released to run on Linux soon the way MS is going, large companies requiring security will start demanding it.
MS is about as unprofessional and unworkable as you can get, their decision makers are clearly living in an alternate reality, I've yet to find a serious use for AI (or patten recognition it's not intelligence) and as for an OS without a start menu, insanity?

This is sort of a tangent: Are there ATX motherboards available that would take an Intel NPC-included chip? (Whatever the model number of a chip like that is.) I was kind of thinking that the NPC part of a desktop would be in the graphics card, but I guess that isn't the case?

I am also only on Windows 10 systems. About this AI stuff and RECALL, I know it takes that special computer requirements for Windows 11.
Though, I do notice now that my Windows 10 system has COPILOT running on the system. By clicking on my lower right corner ICON it brings up a COPILOT feature to start asking questions to it. There is no RECALL on Windows 10 so far like Windows 11 has.
I discovered the COPILOT feature couple weeks ago by accidently clicking on that ICON to see what it did.
I will definitely not go to Linux. I am too old to start learning new systems even though I have been doing software for many years - just never did Linux. I think Windows 10 will work quite a while even after October 2025.
Anyway, thanks for the video. Taake care.

Don’t know why everybody thinks you need the command line for Linux.
      You don’t.
Get Ubuntu, Mint, or Fedora. You simply don’t need it.

I wanted a CoPilot+ PC until I found out I didn't. Not going to miss out on anything. All the more reason to build a custom PC without the 'sticker'.
